  • Every musician has a story to tell about their instrument. Sarah speaks to German cellist Alban Gerhardt and violinmakers Daniel Kogge and Yves Gateau about their experiences. The program also features music from the Borodin Quartet from Russia.
Sarah Willis is a British-American French horn player. In 2001, she joined the Berlin Philharmonic, becoming the first female member of its brass section.
She was born in Maryland, USA and grew up in Tokyo, Boston, Moscow and London. At age 14 she started playing French horn and then attended the Royal College of Music Junior Department in London, UK. She studied full-time at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, UK.
In 1991, she moved to Berlin, where she became Second Horn in the Berlin State Opera under Daniel Barenboim.

"Because we make the sound..." If we're getting all technical...the string players vibrate the string and then the string vibration is picked up by the instrument. Woodwinds make reeds vibrate and then that vibration is picked up by the instrument (or in the case of flute, circling air or whatever). Brass players...the instrument is augmenting their buzzing lips...the sound THEY are making. So if anything...Sarah is making the sound more than bass guy. Word.

I’ve never seen a bass with keys on its extension like that. That’s really cool.

taskbar enhancer It’s the same thing. The cockiness on this double bass player for saying that.

Hand made wooden stringed instruments and their bows are as unique as snowflakes, yet, thankfully, more resilient.
Irreplaceable, but, usually repairable. (Support your local luthier.)
Don't despair if you can't afford a collector's item, sought after by both musicians and investors.
The last few decades have been a golden age for new instruments, which flatter the "Old Masters" by their imitation.
Many as good, or better than the antiques.
Maybe not cheap, but many surprisingly affordable and able to serve new generations of musicians.

The Macdonald Strad viola was offered for sale in excess of a 40million, but it didn't sell. It doesn't mean it's worth that much. An item is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

"How expensive is your instrument and where do you keep it when you're sleeping?"

  • @dejiodejio139
    @dejiodejio139 4 года назад

1:44. You know why they’re not that expensive? Because there’s less demand for it. Not much players compared to, say a violin. It’s that simple.

It's more because creating an extremely good violin is harder than creating an extremely good double bass, because differences in the wood play a much bigger role the smaller the instrument is.

Great video. Should visit a different violinmaker though, this one has destroyed several instruments through wrong and bad repairs.

You are basically the only person posting a complaint. And you repeat your complaint / claim everywhere you'll find an opportunity. You may be right but building a case takes a little more effort and clarification. Revealing (in your Yelp review) that you haven't had personal experience of this luthier with your own instrument is not a good start.
