ShShSh1992 A bumper is often someone who will a help out a (usually principal) hornist who has to play a lot of high solos. All the high solos can be super taxing on a horn player('s lip) and so the bumper helps them by playing the lower "unimportant" parts and run-ups to solos so the principal can save their lip for the more important high solos. They also often just join in on loud parts or alternate with the first horn if it's a tiring part.
Thank you for such a fantastic concert! We had no idea that Cleveland had a jazz history that extends to the present. Lovely to hear! Love, Joel and Beth
Interesting to note that Elise Campbell appeared at the Proms this year (playing second to Richard Watkins in a Mozart serenade at the Cadogan Hall), so Sarah's teaching seems to have been a success!
Very good i like this my dream is to play the horn like SARAH WILIS , if i could have SARAH AS MY TEACHER I WOULD BE VERY HAPPY. AND MY DREAM WILL REALISE. THANKS SARAH FOR YOUR WORK
Not sure the accompanist was doing any favours to Elise in the Mozart 4th concerto! Sounded really like he was thinking, let's get this over with...she sounded so much better in the cadenza.
Saxologic Interesting see you here lol. First I saw the profile pic and thought “wow that’s familiar what the heck” and then saw the name and I’m like oh it’s the Mario lick guy haha
Interesting to hear that you don't use bumpers in Germany, Sarah. I saw the Vienna Phil at the Proms last week (Bruckner 8 with Maazel - amazing) and they had a bumper. So, in that respect at least, Austria differs from Germany. On a related point, orchestras always seem to field four horns (plus bumper) for Beethoven 7, when it is only scored for two. It's a hard blow but even so ... Presumably the BPO takes the purist approach and just uses two.
I am sorry but the girl shows no respect of the gift of having Sarah's help. My teacher would be mortified if a major artist were next to me on stage and my legs were crossed, not to mention all the side-eyes to her friends...really disrepectful
I think she believes she is the best but there with Sarah she becomes aware of her real situation... and she feels like "oh my God I wanna run away!!" But she can't
A bumper is an extra horn player assisting solo horn (principal horn/first horn) because it is too heavy to play all alone. They either play together with first horn in some places, or playing alone giving principal horn some rest.
There's something about the French horn that is so pure, musical, and engaging. Incredible playing.
What a lovely conversation among such beautiful talents. Loved it.

”listen to opera!” as both opera singer and hornist, I liked that.

I agree. and saying "yeah" back to her like that... It's either "Yes" or "Yes, ma'am" !!!
Yeah but she was nervous
Iwant2cJesus She's shy - I didn't see any disrespect, just some embarrassment at being up in front of everyone
everyone has their own opinion :)
I think she believes she is the best but there with Sarah she becomes aware of her real situation... and she feels like "oh my God I wanna run away!!" But she can't
What's a bumper?
I think they are talking about an assistant?
Nathan Peebles
I THINK it may be a second horn player to pick up or play parts of the first horn if needed???
