Can we please bring up the fact that if you walk into an enemy, instead of engaging into combat you just stop dead in your tracks and just awkwardly stare at each other until the enemy attacks you.
But when the enemy approaches you, it be different.
It makes more sense in Advance Wars, were you move whole battalions, so ambushes working like that is more understandable. But a single person having to stand completely still? How scary is it to encounter someone while walking in fog come on
Honestly it's probably a mechanic made for the benefit of the player more than anything else.
Picture it like this : You're trying to move one of your weaker units through the fog, only to encounter an enemy, which not only means you lose the ability to move further or use items that turn, but it *also* means that unit will be forced to engage in combat.
If said unit lost more than half their health but failed to kill the enemy (as weaker units tend to do) then that unit is at an incredible risk of dying. Because unless you have someone nearby that can help perfectly then that unit will be left to be challenged by the enemy during the enemy turn, and since the enemy will proceed to attack first, the unit is basically guaranteed to die as long the enemy has a hit % higher than 50.
Even if the unit doesn't die, as long as the enemy survives the first encounter then the unit is sure to take some s*erious* damage all within that 1 turn of battle, that easily can be the difference between a unit that lives and a unit that dies. And it would all be caused by factors mostly out of the player's control.
My point is that fog of war kinda sucks, but it would be much worse if it was more realistic. So please don't complain about that lack of realism because fixing it would only make the game less fun and honestly, it's Fire Emblem, an entire fort only has room for 1 person, maybe two if one is carrying the other, realism never has and probably never will be their priority

@@shinobix4925 At the very least, they should give you the option to attack and simply wait. A player should be given the option to initiate in combat if they're strong enough instead of being forced to wait. Conversely, if you move a weaker unit, you should be given the option to just wait.

My favorite part of 776. You get exactly two armor knights in the entire game. One at the start and one at the very end with an extremely difficult recruitment. But...because the game is counting on you to capture guys to steal their equipment, at least half the axe-wielding enemies in the game are all armed with hammers which do bonus damage to armor knights, of which a vast majority of enemies are. Which means large parts of the enemy army are pretty much designed, in turn, to just kill him. Big F for Dalsin.

Ikr I just give them to all my mages (no wasted inventory slots) and move them a couple spaces away fr the edge of what I can see to use it. It seriously makes them like 10 times more bearable

@Jacob Schlag It's an infamous binding blade chapter where there's desert, fog of war, hidden items that require waiting in certain spots to obtain, some stupidly strong reinforcements, and a paralogue thats unlocked by keeping a force deployed level 1 dark mage who's one of the worst units in the franchise alive, and winning in under 25 turns.
Fog of war is a fun mechanic, especially thracia fog, that stuff is the best.

this is hilarious to me because this reminds me of that RD chapter where you gotta protect micaiah with the black knight and if she moves 2 inches she gets jumped
The best part is she also gets jumped if you don’t move her two inches.
The chapter is easy if you know where the enemies spawn, but being forced to essentially cheat by using meta knowledge like that completely defeats the purpose of using Fog of War in the first place.
I recently started my first RD playthrough. I had to restart that chapter so many times.
Yeah that was a softlock for me
I got so goddamn lucky my first time with that chapter: Micaiah was speed blessed, got smacked down to somewhere between 1-4 HP(basically she'd die in a single tap), then absolutely refused to allow anyone to touch her.
Had about 16 heart attacks due to her getting jumped so much, but luckily I didn't have to restart the chapter!...though I got RNG screwed massively on my second run and it literally took the RNG gods 3 straight days to give me a pass(best run before that, Micaiah was dodge tanking, then got murdered by a 1% Crit...good times...)

Gotta love it when you can’t see the enemy but they can see you and attack you lol. Fun fact, one of the first strategy games to implement Fog of War in was super Famicom Wars, and enemies in that game would run into you on accident and not be able to attack like human players can. From what I could tell advance wars and games onward in that series act like FE 5 and onwards do with their Fog of War mechanics. I’m glad that most FE’s don’t use Fog of War anymore or they use it quite sparingly.
Berwick Saga also did this, in fact, fog of war in that game is actually fun as there are units that can combat fog of war like thieves or filers (you only get one filer though and well...she not exactly the best in terms of combat.) also you can use the fog of war to your advantage unlike other Fire Emblem games where it only affects the player.
