The Herta is one of the more commonly known Hybrid Rudiments. Tomas Haake of Meshuggah plays this rudimental variation heavily in their song, “Bleed.” In this lesson, Cameron breaks the pattern down and demonstrates how to incorporate The Herta into your drumming. Keep in mind that the pattern does not always line up to a 4/4 click, as it takes 3 measures to resolve. Try placing The Herta within 16th note patterns. Have fun with this one! Super fun to play!
You betcha!
Man thank you so much for very clear explanation. 😊
You're welcome! Thanks for watching and I'm glad you liked it. 🤘
hahahahaha "and here's what it sounds like at a 100 bpMMMMM"
Meetalz \M/
My brain hertas
Hahaha brilliant. But does it bleed?
It’s so easy lol
Cool lesson Cameron!!🤘🤘
Thanks Zack!
Hello after watching you pull off that drum rudiment I ,hit subscribe. Killer drumming.
Thanks Scott! Stick around 🤘
Everyone learns their own way. My way of grasping the relationship between the hands and feet via the foundation beat Tomas Haake plays on "Bleed" was recognizing the polyrhythm, which is a 3:4 polyrhythm between the quarter note (right hand) and the accented 4th note (last beat) of the Herta (3 quarter notes for every 4 accented last beats of the Herta). Until I figured that out, it was difficult to FEEL the groove since the snare floats and hits three different parts of the looped drum beat before it hits in the same place again. In my opinion, the phrasing of this drum beat is what makes it difficult - not the tempo or the pattern with the feet - not to say the foot pattern is simple/easy at all (at 115 bpm for as long as he plays it). The accented left-foot via the last beat of the Herta is my anchor toward feeling the phrasing of the polyrhythm.
Cool!

Awesome! Thanks so much. Can't wait to get some more lessons on here for you all. \M/
Cameron Fleury can't wait man
Now do it in full tempo at 115bpm
Challenge accepted.
118
Thanks for this tutorial. So far I just can't do it tho I've played double bass for 40 years. I'll keep trying. Peace
Nice Video!!
Thanks Adam! Tomas is one hell of a drummer.
Trying to play this pattern makes my legs herta.
Play it for 6 minutes straight, that'll learn ya! :)
It should be like a treadmill, where you get to slow the tempo down depending upon your age.
Nice one man! I love the 3 against 4 feel. bpEMMMMM! Haha 🤘
Take care -Chris
Yeah buddy! Thanks for stopping by. ✊
nice
Thanks so much! 🤘
Bro,can i mail u a video of me doing it? Wanna confirm if im right
you bump up bpm and also change note values? I'm confused. isn't 1/8th just the same value only speed difference in all bpm?
I was just demonstrating the rudiment throughout different subdivisions. You're right, though. Thanks for commenting man! :)
This was a good lesson don’t cha know
Much appreciated, man. Rock on!
that herta was really cool. But I need to buy double pedals.
But I have to learn in Slow speed then normal speed in 6 months.
A lapel mic or an overhead for vocals would be great!
Definitely! It’s on the list.
Why cant I transition that beat 16 and 8th notes to the 32nd and 16th notes?
Good Lesson. But aren't those hi-hat pulses accented? I think Haake does them in live shows.
To be fair I’m not actually sure. Obviously the recordings were done using his electronic sounds. Live may be slightly different than the album.
what double technique does TOMAS HAAKE use on the feet? when i heel toe "bleed" my calves burn bright red, and set my drumset on fire. i dont think heal-toe is the way to play "bleed".
You are correct in saying that. He definitely plays heel up, I think because of the odd meter it would be difficult to play it heel toe. Not saying its not possible, but much more difficult.
i am always correct. and i can do the bass with heal-toe, but it burns, and then my feet melt like the cheese(lava) in a got' damned hotpocket and i cant finish the song.
Well that's not good! I can't play heel toe, so props to you! I do this all with singles.
then ur a god
hahaha not a chance! But thank you! Just slow it down and keep working at it. You'll surprise yourself how easy it becomes over time.
I do the same beat but with a single drag tap with my feet. I use heel toe for my doubles, I find it allows my legs to continue in a RLRL pattern with out stopping. rrL R llR L
But bleed is played at 260bpm
Yeah so regardless of the pattern, its going to tire you out after 6 minutes of playing it! :)
Hmmmm challenge accepted
Let's see ya do a video on it! :)
Turn the snare off when you arent playing it lol
Great vid btw keep it up
Noted! Thanks so much. 🤘🤓🤘
Is the Huerta the same as a ruff?
Not necessarily! The ruff plays LL R or RR L, whereas the Herta is alternating single strokes.
@@CameronFleury ah ok, I've been calling huertas ruffs all this time lol
Both are really good rudiments to know!
fucking love u
Thanks!
Te faltan las ghost notes amigo!

BPMMMM!!! \M/
Buddy...
Great drummer but his kick drum is still a little loose on the intro
Hey man, its all good! I'll putting some more current stuff out soon. Thanks for stopping by! \M/
Cameron Fleury much respect for responding, the lesson was very well explained
Hippity Hoppety i just want the pain in my legs to stoppety
WHOA FUCK ME ARE THOSE BASS DRUMS OR MORTAR SHELLS EXPLODING
Like the other guy said..they only any to play like Tomas...is actually BEING Tomas
Metaphorically speaking you can play like Tomas. But you cannot BE Tomas. 😊
@@CameronFleury that's true:)... Thomas is one of the only drummers, that has such a different style of playing!somewhat like Mario duplantier.. it's so hard to copy! But then again... you got the bleed inlay done!
But I've not seen any drummer try to do a full song like Clockworks :)
He definitely is in his own tier of playing. In my teenage years I was obsessed with his playing. Still kind of am! I can’t seem to find any drumless versions of their songs other then bleed. If you come across any please let me know! 🤓
BLEED........
Pretty much. 🤓
Never heard anyone pronounce herta that way
I’ve heard guys call it a blurta. My guess is there’s a few different ways to call it. How do you say it?
i think we are cousins lmao
What! No way!? How?
i will have to check with my grandparents and get back to you haha
Two 16th followed by two 8ths. It's 4, not 5 notes.
Triplet feel? There is no ternery feel in that song, as far as I know...It's all about the 16th grid one follows. Or did you mean 3/4 bars or something like that?
Coming undone by korn is just bleed but slower
how to play like tomas haake:
1. dont try because you cant
How to play like Tomas Haake:
-You can’t.
-Don’t try.
-Good day.
It seems that a lot of people teach how to play this beat. I don't understand... the only hard part about it is playing it quickly for a long time. It's obvious how to play it. It's the only obvious part of Bleed. Why not focus on the later parts of the song when things become incredibly complicated?
0:00 - 0:10 FAIL!
Thanks for watching! Hope that my new videos will better satisfy your viewing experience!
@@CameronFleury Woah I didn't expect such a positive reply. Will definitely check out your new videos!
@@Djentstructer thanks for understanding! This was an old video and it still makes me cringe, but that's the journey.
This is such a boring beat.
There are many different applications for this pattern. This is just the basic version of it.
