For a drummer that plays some of the heaviest, and complicated drumming around, Tomas has such a sense of groove and taste. As great as Meshuggah are, the drums on their own like music.
Pretty f'n good, it's still an interesting song to listen to & tricky to play. When you think that Contradictions Collapse was released in 1991 when Tomas was just 19 years old, than it's even more impressive.
Its an older song, -I think its cadaverous mastication- *edit* it's Greed, as the description says ;)* . If you listen or look closely, you can hear the rest of the band backing in the mix or video, respectively.
Greed, he's playing. I used to spout on and on on the old tandjent forum about how they should play their old songs off of Contradictions Collapse. That's a great album.
The simplest reason for why Remo? Because Remo has the best feel ever. PERIOD. Evans feels dead and sounds very artificial. Remo has lead innovation in drumheads since their inception. They have a head for every playing situation in every color and texture imaginable. I have tried every company of heads imaginable, and Remo is just my go to brand forever.
And they're more durable, in the same spam of 1 remo snare head (forgot which model) I've broken 2 Evans heads (and they weren't even mine lol but they were brand new)
Somehow everyone goes back to Remo !Was surprised about the coated mode though ! And also I believe Vincent sticks are the best choice for every drummer ! Stick out with them sence two and a half years!
I just realized his style of playing is similar to mine. When he's not doing some crazy weird time signature or a bunch of polyrhythms he's playing very straightforward and sort of simple.
LaikaToplake Bear in mind that this isn't a full mix of any sort, it's pretty much all-camera audio, so things aren't going to translate the way they should.
moonodude17 I understand that, but the resonans is non-existent. I myself use coated emporers on the batter and coated ambassador on the reso side. But listen, he must find the sound he's got super sexy. All i'm saying, is as a commercial for a product that has got to do with sound, of ant kind, maybe this isn't so hot. And the argument about not using pro-gear when doing theese vids, is just, eehh? If that is the case, why the f**k would you keep the guy who did the commercial around? It's like trying to sell a car, and not put it through a wash first :-)
DORITOBAGSACK It may very well be, but they are still tuned like shit. They sound like mine did, before i knew anything about resonans. Back when you just tuned up and played until it got flappy, tuned up, flappy, up, flappy, up, broke, turn the drum around and use the other side :-)
DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT RIDE THAT IS even the one he played on the "nothing" album and "destroy erase improve"album im thinking its hh power bell 22 inch
+Stephen Valdez Most likely yes although it could be an offshoot of that model. I don't know what he used on those albums you mentioned but I'm fairly certain he had a power bell on Chaosphere tour. I saw them that year. Sabian appears to have different versions of this model. Whether or not they catalog them all I don't know. Sabian is known to do one offs and prototypes fairly frequently so it's at least possible Haake is using a prototype. I've seen versions with unlathed bells in recent years. It looks like this one is unlathed on the underside. If memory serves, the ones from the 90s had even bigger bells although I could be mistaken. I just remember seeing one of their 90s catalogs back in the day and the bell was ridiculously enormous. The recent ones from the past 10 or 15 years look a little more proportioned with the body of the cymbal.
'Nothing' would've been the HH Power Bell here, 'DEI' was a Zildjian of some description (as seen on the "Transfixion" video) with a smaller bell, so probably an A Rock Ride
Always superb playing by the master, but who forgot to use the audio from the desk fro the toms? It's like the camera audio only. wtf! Not a good sound on the toms if you were trying to highlight the skin/tom sound. It's like they forgot to use the mixed drum audio from the main desk on the video....
I honestly think his decision to change is due to just wanting to try something new. He's been with evans drumheads and axis pedals for 10+ years now. 4+ i believe with trick pedals. I just think he wanted a change for "new-times sake"
***** I highly doubt that he will. He has stated before that the China he uses is by far his favorite china he has ever heard and he would only change it if it broke and it was impossible to get another.
Blake U Yeah, I don't know, maybe he did maybe didn't. But he DID have signature sticks with VF so why wouldn't those be the best possible sticks for him. I mean he designed them. Yet here we are and he is not using them anymore. He used Evans for years and was probably one of their top endorsees, yet here we are again. Zakk Wylde used GHS strigns for 20+ years and would've killed his mother before using anything else. Yngwie used Dimarzio (his own signature model) pickups for 20+ years. Steve Lukather used EMG pickups (including his signature pickup) for decades. And now all of a sudden, after all these years, they aren't the best gear for them? They never once tried these other brands and noticed that they were better? There is this little thing called MONEY and *bang* "Oh yeah a get just that sound with these that I've been looking for all these years"
They're playing Greed off Meshuggah's 1st album Contradictions Collapse, part of their anniversary tour. Amazing, yet forgotten album. It's essentially the spiritual evolution of Metallica's Justice.
DORITOBAGSACK Assuming you're referring to "Aramid Fiber," that's high-tensile fiber (think Kevlar) that is commonly used in marching snare drum heads from most drumhead companies. Evans uses them, Remo uses them. It isn't lower quality (in fact, it's far more durable) but is really just different.
Ben O'Brien Smith DORITOBAGSACK All Remo and Evans marching drumheads are not the same. There are different fabric materials, Mylar for laminating and hoop crimping techniques that all have an impact on the sound and the strength of the head. Marching snare heads are designed to be used on marching snare drums at extremely high tensions and are designed to produce a very crisp dry sound. Though using a marching snare head would last a long time on a standard drum set snare you do take the risk of damaging your drum due to the high tension those heads require. Mylar drumheads also produce a better overall sound for drum set snare drums. If you need extreme durability and a dry sound try our Emperor X.
Powerstroke 3 coated are way muffled, Powerstroke 4 only have the inlay that just dampens the head! P4s are more open. i have to disagree on just that. i like p3s tho :)
"greed" was kind of a crappy choice of song to show off their drum heads. it sounds fairly boring when you can't hear the other instruments. nevertheless tomas is my favorite drummer of all time, meshuggah has been so influential to my learning drums over 20+ years.
"Ya these are my drum heads. I use them as crash cymbals"
Meshuggah has the sickest riffs, and watching him play em is a real treat.
For a drummer that plays some of the heaviest, and complicated drumming around, Tomas has such a sense of groove and taste. As great as Meshuggah are, the drums on their own like music.
meshuggah is a very percussion oriented band.
Pretty f'n good, it's still an interesting song to listen to & tricky to play. When you think that Contradictions Collapse was released in 1991 when Tomas was just 19 years old, than it's even more impressive.
It's so strange to watch him playing a straight 4/4 rock groove. :p
He makes it sound interesting.
Bleed is also 4\4.
learn 2 count son
@@warrenoids If you only want to play the hh + sn without the ghost notes... yeah, then it's in 4/4
Its an older song, -I think its cadaverous mastication- *edit* it's Greed, as the description says ;)* . If you listen or look closely, you can hear the rest of the band backing in the mix or video, respectively.
Good to see that he's using the ride again!
Guillermusician93 what ride is that?
sabian HH powerbell
it's because he is playing s song from 91 when he was 19.
Meshuggah is hands down one of my favorite bands. So f'n unique and EPIC. Mr. Haakes' drumming is so next level its ridiculous.
Greed, he's playing. I used to spout on and on on the old tandjent forum about how they should play their old songs off of Contradictions Collapse. That's a great album.
Ooooh the raw sound of that kit is soooo fineeee. Treat for the ears . .
Haake is great. I love his time signatures. I hope I rock as hard as he does when I get older.
you more than likely will if you keep on practising :)
The best drummer ever!
That kit is beautiful.
Dat snare though, it fucking cuts!
Beat Therapy Not to mention HH, check 3:26, THAT fucking cuts!
+Beat Therapy aaaaaaaaaaand is a beauty
It’s a Sonor artist series bronze snare 14x6
Nice to see Thomas back with Remo and adding a Ride back into cymbal set up.
so satisfying to listen to
Tons of groove.....I love it!
Totally loving this ! :)
Remember when Thomas used to use a ride cymbal, as a ride cymbal?
Can confirm he has stopped using rides as they're meant to be used since then.
Just like everything else...
he uses them as crashes.
I use my rideas my heaviest floater. The reverb creates much ambient
The king!

I'd like to see him go back to having 5 toms, and Zildjians!
:)
A little ''Gods Of Rapture'' in the start, my favorite
I just realized his style of playing is similar to mine. When he's not doing some crazy weird time signature or a bunch of polyrhythms he's playing very straightforward and sort of simple.
there's no crazy weird time signatures, it's all 4/4
@@goto228i that's not true he plays 15/8 and 19/8 on stifled
@@ClusterOfAtoms77stifled is actually entirely in 4/4.
That ride just sounds perfectly

LaikaToplake

LaikaToplake His drums sound super sexy! That's the normal sound of unmic'd acoustic drums.

TOP CLASSIC HEAVY METAL DRUMMING. REMINDS ME BONHAM AND MC BRAIN WITH SOME LITTLE MORE IDEAS. SOUNDS VERY JAZZ TO ME WITH ALL CLASSIC SYNCOPATIONS.
Damn, that HH mic's hot!!
Nice vid. Haake for presedent!

Vanished
Anyone know what his ride is that he's using?
Sabian HH Power Bell, and an old one at that. I used to have one. Regret letting it go every time I play. Great ride.
WhenSummersGone2
I habe it now :) It's very loud and cutting. And it's almost too trve for me.
Dat china tho 9:15
does anyone know what that song is?
+patrickwilliamson29
Greed

Is that a jam session or what?
Sounds amazing! Dat groove *_*

Sound check, gear check...
Socks of like a Swedish boss!
what pedal that he use there
+haekal nadhil It's a Pearl Demon Drive. I think he's gone back to a Trick Pro-1v though.
its a trick pro
Stephen Valdez Watch the video, he uses a Demon Drive in this one.
merry crispness....
hat song he is playing? anyone?
Check the description
I heard he uses these drum heads as a crash.
which song is he playing?
'Greed'
Does anyone know Kara Haake
Lol nicely done remo you found one of the only Meshuggah songs that has boring drums.
Boring?
Gr8 b8 m8.
When are you covering it and nailing all those displaced snare hits at the end?
I take it the Evan's black chrome where not doing the job. I get it. Remo. The 1st and only serious choice.
Weird seeing him with an actual crash and ride lol
So that is how you pronounce his name
Tomas is playing a little sloppy and I love it
Are you drunk again?
tomas haake sloppy? what are you smoking
I though he used to play Evans
0:39 that's what he says.
I think Evans is the only brand that uses that type of material. I know it's a way lower quality one.

Tomas Haake doesnt have a Swedish accent 🤗
But it doesn't really matter what he puts on his kick drums though
