The VQ is a notoriously raspy platform and changing up your exhaust components can potentially compound that characteristic. Unrestricted exhaust frequencies, thinner walled components, lower quality materials, or even higher quality, but more rigid materials like stainless steel or titanium can lead to raspy noises in your exhaust as they do not absorb those frequencies as well. Luckily the solution is relatively simple!
@@tysoncross3350I'm pretty sure it's normal, my also sounds really raspy (except I have long tube headers) and it sounds like a really loud noise comes from right under me

I just had a Fast Intentions TDX X-pipe exhaust, along with a Stillen Gen 3 long-tube CAI, installed on my 370Z by Fast Intentions at their Simi Valley shop about a week ago. I also had the engine dyno tuned with the EcuTek software by Sebastian Chakoff at Specialty Z, also in Simi Valley. The result has been a great sounding system that has no rasp and that produces great power, 321 rwhp @ 7200 rpm on the Dynojet chassis dyno. The torque has scaled up by about 15% over the whole rev range, with the car much more lively and responsive. What I did was not cheap but I was willing to spend what it would take to get the results I was looking for. I elected this route, saving money on the purchase of a new 2019 370Z vs the used Porsche Cayman S I had been considering and using the money saved for future modifications. If you cheap out on the products or the expertise of the people who work on the car you are taking a gamble, which may or may not work out for you.
Well stated... In the process of solving the same problem in a ‘20 supercharged Coyote motor. The exhaust system consists of a Stainless Works long tube headers/high flow cats/Y-pipe/factory resonator/dynomax 1-in/2-out muffler/two 3” turn-downs. Great V8 tone through 3000rpm; after that it gets increasingly raspy, to the point where it drowns out the blower. So even in my system, with high flow cats, I still have plenty of rasp. The only difference that I’m aware of between high flow cats and the OEM cats is the size of the honeycomb in there. So that wasn’t my first suspect. Planning on adding a longer resonator; hopefully that’s the answer.
I don’t know man, I got used to it and learned to love it. I do remember thinking it was broken. Lol and got me the steering wheel great suggestion. Me and my brother are going to converted to white and carbon fiber finish.
Your exhaust sounds very good and I like the design of the Borla resonator/x-pipe. The exhaust system I went with used mandrel bent tubes with minimal bends and a series of perforated core resonators in place of baffled mufflers. The x-pipe uses a siamesed design that acts like two one-into-two y-pipes with minimal turbulence.
I’m running a Fast Intentions CBE with 12” resonators and Berk HFC’s on my G37, gotta say I put a lot of research into making sure my car didn’t sound like any of the ones you showed in the beginning lmaoo. Great video 👍
Speed Culture Studios without a doubt! No CEL, and once they’re warmed up, no bad smell either. Definitely the best choice when it comes to daily driving and wanting a less restrictive exhaust
Just so you know your ride is loud! My 2003 Maxima has headers and 3" exhaust and it's deep , mellow and smooth and quiet! The secret is utilizing the best Mufflers and the biggest you can squeeze under the chassis....6" round resonator that's 18" in length was fitting along with a huge 22" x 5" 11" rear muffler made on thick T304 SS Been rolling this for over 10 years!
Mine is loud? It’s not THAT loud. It’s perfect. An open exhaust v8 is loud. A straight pipe vq37 is loud. This is not loud. And that’s not really a secret. Bigger the muffler, the quieter it is. My borla muffler is 20 x 9 x 5 and top quality. Resonators out back at 4” round by 20” in length. Perfect mellow tone cruising and aggressive and throaty at wide open throttle-just how it should be.
I have Motordyne Advance Resonance Tuning (ART) test pipes , AAM H-Pipe , AAM Resonated Mid Pipe , and AAM Resonated Short tails. 2 resonator on test pipes, , 2 on the mid pipe and 2 on the axle back section for a total of 6 resonators love the tone it’s not obnoxious it’s deep and beefy
I want to get a single exit for my G37 coupe. Thinking about HBP since he can put two resonators in the y-pipe, one in the midpipe and a muffler at the back. Definitely going to run resonated test pipes, for a total of FIVE resonators! 😂 I'm thinking it will sound amazing, thoughts?!
That should be a good combo. Single exits can get super raspy just because there isn’t enough space to fit large resonators. With a resonated y and some other ones in line, you should get a nice even tone!
Put a couple Vibrants “ultra quiet” resonators on there. They don’t really quiet anything down but they cut out nasty sounds like rasp and drone due to being a short but wide body resonator with quality packing
I've been a nissan tech for 27yrs,like any rasp toned exhaust just buy a quality vibrant rezzy, the quite cores work best!Problem solved!Everyone make it seem complicated, these tubes create rasp, sound frequency can be adjusted by canceling itself out with a better resonator,it's all common sense people!I built my own exhaust in my driveway and u need quality to get a good sound!
It almost sounds counter intuitive but larger piping seems to help with rasp when paired with good resonators/mufflers. Honda v6s with pre cat deletes seem to deal with this a lot with the exhaust options that are out there
Here also another idea they sell resonated downpipes from hks that could help alot with that rasp as well that's what I'm planing on buying soon for my car
In the future, I’m going to attempt to put resonated test pipes and with a custom exhaust(2.25 inch all the way) with an H-pipe with resonators to see if it will give a deep tone and hopefully there won’t be a lot of rasp.
Have you ever experienced a weird hissing sound. I’m having this issue coming from the passenger side. Only can hear at low speeds. Usually when I’m driving slow in my neighborhood and under 35/40 mph.
Good informative video. I’m going to do the same setup as you except I’m leaving my cats in. Don’t wanna be really loud but not too quiet either. See what happens
So I watched your video on the $500 exhaust system as well and took from it the two parts I felt would do just what I needed for my 2016 Q70L 3.7 AWD and that was the Borla mid muffler and the two Flowmaster resonators. Sounds and runs way better than stock. Thank you
Awesome video! I just did the custom pipe. I remove the stock mid pipe muffler instead with Flowmaster super 10 dual in & out. And no resonator after the FM muffler, but I keep the stock CAT. The car is so loud and it sounds deep under 4000 RPM but it will get little raspy between 4000-6000RPM. Any suggestions to fix it? Thank you for your help and time!
I kinda like how these cars start up.. I had mines straight pipe..was extremely loud..wife hated it..so I got magnaflow and it seem better I guess.. miss straight pipes tho lol
but i also went from a test pip with straight X Pip to a duel in n out muffler x pip BUT NOW i lost the loudness that i love especially when you start it up and gets heads turning also when your at lights reving it up to be loader then the car next to you is there not a set up to keep the extreme loudness and get rid of rasp can a step 2 tune increase loudness and also with the duel x pip muffler stop a flame map
You got a lot going on here. I’m not sure what you’re saying. If you’ve installed a resonator recently, just give it time. The volume will come back as the packing material breaks in. Otherwise, one way to get some volume back is to install electronic cut outs. You can push a button and open valves that will make the car loud, then you can close them back up for normal driving
@@SpeedCultureStudios yea I just installed MagnaFlow tru x resonated muffler at the mid pip section now sounds like they way I had it back when I had the oem cats in but if the packing material brakes in, will that not bring back the rasp
@@SpeedCultureStudios so probably won't need as many resonators then? I'm asking I'm general I don't have a nissan it's more for my 2jz less rasp more smoother tone
So I have RTPs and an Invidia Q300... volume and tone are pretty good, but there's still some rasp getting through which I don't like. The only resonators on the Q300 are after the cats - so an unresonated X pipe. I'm asking based on your setup with the Borla X pipe and the Flowmasters near the end - do you think a better spot to add resonation would be with a resonated X pipe or with two inline resonators before the mufflers? That setup is so nice that, as you proved, resonated vs unresonated TPs or HFCs hardly make a difference. Only other thing is I'm thinking about switching to HFCs, can I expect those to take care of that problem?
High flow cats will likely knock down the little bit of rasp you have. However, if you’d like to retain the test pipes, some nice resonators immediately after your x pipe would help a great deal.
I have a g35 sedan 2005 yesterday I put Megan racing test pipes and it’s stock exhaust just resonator delete on it no intake, the problem that I have it’s when accelerate at a dig it doesn’t have the same power it loss power and when I do a Stop it shakes and make a raspy noise, what would u recommend me to do bro
I currently have Megan test pipes and Megan y pipe. It is very raspy and I bought 2 vibrant ultra quiet resonators. Where is the section to install them? Do I replace the stock resonators? Thanks
Yes you can put them where the factory resonators are or you can keep the factory resonators and add the vibrant in the area of where the factory muffler was
Hey man so like almost a year ago I asked you if a muffler delete sounded good and you said yea. I got it done and I've loved it, it was perfect. Though my cats are rattling now. So I ordered test pipes. So only muffler delete and test pipes on the way. Do you think I'll have issue with the stock reso? I feel like I'll go for new resonators anyway
@@SpeedCultureStudios Ahhh ok I feared that would be the case. It sounds great right now. I found 18" resonators. But you're saying x pipe is better and should fix it all up?
@@gods1hell1spawn10011 I’m saying if you install test pipes with no muffler and only resonators, it will not sound good. The borla muffler that I recommend in my exhaust videos that should help a lot.
@@SpeedCultureStudios ok! I will literally take your word for it! I know you know your shit lol guess that creates a nice tone. Even with stock reso, I thought you wanted the miffling happening closest to the test pipes. But it would also be nice to have mufflers because it's visible and illegal haha
Awesome video! I was thinking to do a similar build as you with the mid muffler and resonated exhaust parts. I did see your online store with your recommendations based on what you have. I am not an expert and was hoping you can help with a list of components for the exhaust set up you have. Also, any points on high flow cats to not trigger the CEL?
Hey man! Awesome video. Do u really think resonators do a good job in reducing rasp/loud tone from experience? And how long does a perforated resonator last in a catless system?
Check out my other videos man! Resonators ARE what reduce or eliminate rasp. That’s their purpose. And depending on quality, they last a long time. My custom catback is 2 years old now and sounds great!
I completely understand where you're coming from. I'm currently not running any resonators at all but have art pipes, a thick y pipe (doesn't have thin collector) and only a muffler exhaust tip since I went 3 inch single. I do have some rasp but i kind of like the hint of rasp it provides. Almost like adding distortion to an instrument is kind of how I view it but just as with that, too much and it sounds horrendous. You mind if I send you some sound clips on I.G for your opinion on my setup?
Well it’s not a muffler delete if you replace the muffler with a ...muffler😉 but yes it should help-you may still have some rasp though so just be prepared.
I have non resonated lower down pipes , and a full catback exhaust with NO resonators and its raspy at certain rpms, what resonator size would you recommend? Its a 3.0t btw Anything will help.
Question, as far as your AFE pro dry s filters, do you use mild soap and hot water or do you use some type of degreaser, cleaning solution? Thanks for videos!
I have not washed them yet, but as they are not oiled, I would not think a degreaser is necessary. Warm soapy water is likely sufficient, but I would check aFe instructions.
Hey man nice videos, so this is my short story, a local shop build.my exhaust, for a fiat abarth, so it's straight pipe all the way from the high flow cat, they used a Y pipe like that one you show in your video, after a week is so raspy and I'm sure it come from that Y pipe, should I get a resonator in the middle pipe before the Y pipe? And put mini mufflers close to the tips? Thanks
@@SpeedCultureStudios main thing im concerned about is the stock g37 pipe which is 1.5 inches and the borla is 2.5 i was told id have to get a 2.5 inch y pipe by an exhaust shop for it to work
I have a 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix and almost every video that I have heard with aftermarket mufflers has sounded very raspy (i personally don't like the sound), either they had stock resonators or resonator deletes(have also had cat delete as well if they have had the resonators removed), I was trying to find some info on how to make it less raspy before I have work actually done(or if I even should), this video helped me out with my decision and I think I will have it done, just need to find some resonators that would fit. If you have any recommendations for some good resonators, just know I don't plan on having the piping completely redone, so the pipe sizes would be about 2in all the way through. Thanks for making this video, very informative. Edit: Would it cause more problems then its worth to have 2 resonators installed if i plan on having dual exhaust?
Won’t cause any problems. To prevent rasp just get some good resonators like the upower or flowmaster flowfx resonators listed in my SCS custom catback video.
I love all your videos. Very informative, and always fun to watch. I have an 08 G35xS Sedan. I have (z1) HFCs to a (ISR) 2.75 inch y pipe, to a (Manzo) 2.25 inch resonator pipe w/Manzo mufflers. My Rasp is unbearable (rasp origins after HFC install). IYO, if I were to leave the z1 HFCs on, what do you think would work best to eliminate the rasp⁉️ Y pipe resonation? new axle back? Help!!!
Your problem is your y pipe, the inlet is 2.75 but the outlet is 3 inch, matching a 3 inch pipe to a 2.25 inch pipe is were the rasp will happen, and bad exhaust flow too, get a 350z hr y pipe witch is 2.5 inch all the way through and get custom 2.5 inch piping after the y pipe with some resonators or mufflers, I'm pretty sure those HFC are 2.5 inch all the way as well
Good chance those HFCs rattle a little bit if they came with cheap gaskets like mine did. If it sounds something like at 6:00 mark of this video then I'd replace the gaskets with better quality ones and see if it fixes the sound.
Question my rasp I just after installing my test pipes are coming from my small resonators on my invidia Gemini exhaust sounds like springs or some rattling and only happens when I’m driving normal speeds or floor it but on neutral or park u don’t hear it really do I need bigger resonators
Not trying to bash but I tried this using a borla mid muffler similar to the one you have in the video and the rasp was still there.even went and added 2 long add resonator and still rasp. Pretty much convince vq decatted is cursed with rasp. (Setup: Berk resonated test pipes~megan y pipe~ borla pro xs mid muffler and had it straight piped out =rasp/ then added resonator at the end aka muffler=rasp)
You kept the y pipe. You're probably hearing rasp from the flex pipe of the megan y pipe. The point of the borla that I have is that it is truly an x pipe. It eliminates the need for a y pipe and has the exhaust flows cross paths, which deadens some of those raspy frequencies at the same time absorbing them into the matting material. There should be minimal rasp left after the borla, but the large resonators at the back--as long as you used decent ones of the correct size--should have eliminated the rest. I would say there are 2 potentials. 1. again would be the fact that you kept the megan y pipe with the garbage flex and didn't use a borla x muffler. or 2. Your car isn't actually that raspy but you've never experienced a truly raspy vehicle to know what is bad and what isn't. Yes, the vq with test pipes is raspy. However, I, along with the dozen or more people now at this point that have copied my setup, do not have any (or very very little) rasp.
Hey so I had recently installed a y pipe & berks and it was fine, until I eventually burned out my mufflers lol. It's cool cause I wanted to replace them anyways I now have a rasp. Still have the stock resonator as well. Options are get a chamber muffler as resonator and do muffler delete. Get a similar res u have (still prob change the muff) or buy 2 chamber muff. What would you recommend. && Would I still be able to shoot flames since it's not straight through
If you get a chambered muffler, no you will not get flames most likely. I wouldn’t get a chamber muffler anyway because they take away volume and not necessarily rasp-depending on the style of muffler of course. Just get some large resonators man.
Love how your Q sounds. So this is helpful but still kinda lost, basically find someone who can customized the pipes, get a borla, then get some resonators?
It’s not just “someone.” Just go to an exhaust shop. That’s what they do. I have all the pieces listed in the description. A lot of shops will have this stuff or can order it for you.
Hey! I am planning out my custom exhaust build for my 2010 g37x sedan could you let me know how you think this would sound? I am looking for something aggressive and rumbly but not to be shaking everyones house on morning startups. Resonated test pipes into a magnaflow 11386 X resonator into 17930 resonators in place of the oem ones back to just 4" tips with all custom 2.5" piping throughout?
That should sound nice. Very similar to my setup. The magnaflow won’t cut down the rasp as much as my borla does, but should still sound decent. It’ll be aggressive but not overly obnoxious.
I don’t have Nav so it’s my default display, but I’m sure you can set it to something else-at least temporarily-by pushing the display button on the center counsel
Here’s the conclusion I came to through extensive non-relenting research on this subject lmao: The Gemini catback for the coupe/370’s have NO hissing or rasp with HFC’s or test pipes unlike the 3.7 sedan sedan version and here’s MOSTLY why: resonators are ON the Y-pipe (closer to the cats) on the coupe/370 version. For the sedan, the resonators are on the Mid pipes, farther from the cats, which leads to hissing and rasp and it’s a pretty shitty design flaw. Not a knock on invidia either, it’s the same for every catback system I know of for the sedan. The 18 inch resonated mid pipe catback from fast intentions is the best option but those are hard to get. Everything else lacks proper resonation of the exhaust coming from the HFCs/Test pipes leading to the hissing/rasp, especially on deceleration. Diameter of the piping also plays a role but for the most part, it’s that shit design for pretty much all catbacks not having resonators where it counts. That being said, SCS custom catback is literally the best catback system you can get for a 3.7 Q50 or 3.7 sedan if you want solid power without sounding like diarrhea in a tin toilet at rikers island
I have to agree 😁 But seriously you’re right in that having a substantial quality resonator very near to the test pipes is extremely important combating rasp. Having a resonated x pipe like the borla is ideal because not only is it a strong resonator, but also allows the exhaust gases to cross over one another which “smooths” out the tone.
@@SpeedCultureStudios Sweet man I appreciate your advice you been helping keep my G tasteful hah. Which x pipe would you recommend with muffler delete and stainless steel test pipes? Any x pipe should do the trick? Thx for your input!!
@@SpeedCultureStudios Perfect! So I have a Q40, with a Stillen CBE with Berk HFCs. I'm sort of new to HFCs so I probably should've done some more research, but when accelerating past 3k RPM, the rasp on it is just terrible. I decided to put on a Vibrant Performance bottle resonator (2.25 inlet/outlet 12" long) on the Y Pipe of the Stillen CBE (closest to the HFC). It reduced some of the rasp, but still is present past 3k RPM. Not sure if adding in more resonators towards the mufflers would help or if I need to look into maybe a different type of resonator on the Y pipe.
@@OMGooFy vibrant makes good product but those bottle resonators are so smal, they don’t do much for rasp. You can add additional resonators into the system or you can replace the vibrants with larger resonators
@@SpeedCultureStudios When you refer to larger resonators, are you referring to the length of them? (go with like 14" or 18" if applicable vs the 12") Or are you referring to the actual body width of the resonator itself. I was thinking of maybe adding the additional resonators before the mufflers.
@@OMGooFy it can be either or or both. The body can have a larger diameter but often people avoid that because the car is lowered so longer is typically the better option. Like an 18” (22” overall length) is generally pretty good. Like a flowmaster FlowFX. Or Upower. Just make sure the core is perforated and not louvered
overrated. Its very popular, and doesn't sound too bad, but they have been seeing some poor quality craftsmanship lately. Not acceptable for the price tag on them.
@@younasghulam1714 FlowFX resonators by flowmaster work well or vibrant streetpower resonators are good if you're not adding any other type of muffler.
I have a Stillen catback with ISR test pipes, but not sure what to do from here regarding rasp. Research is telling me there isn’t much to do to the Stillen system?
Do you get a different sound with an x pipe, over a y pipe? I know since I have a 3.0t that I will never get that deep aggressive sound like my cts v had, but what can I do to my current car, to get the deepest tone possible, so it's not tingy or raspy?
Large diameter resonators help. An x pipe helps to even the tone a bit as well-a resonated x pipe is best. But resonators allow those longer wave lengths (deeper tones) to pass through while they absorb those tinny raspy notes that you’re talking about.

ToXic FallZone it’s hard to say. It’s a different tone. Speed Culture Studios will i benefit anything sound or performance wise upgrading my current remark axle back to a cbe ark grip and just leave my cats stock?.. dont wanna mess with cel..
MrRainnnsss You won’t see any difference in performance-sound, quite possibly. Axleback isn’t really a performance part. And you won’t have to worry about a CEL changing anything after the o2 sensors.
Hey, man. So I have the hfc and 1320 y pipe with an aftermarket axleback. I feel that it needs one last touch and the borla mid muffler sounds like that would be it. I did look at your set up of components but I’m not entirely sure which borla pro xs muffler would be the correct fitting for my 1320 y pipe. Would you happen to know? Thanks a ton
If you’re going to keep your y pipe intact you’d have to get a single inlet muffler, with dual outlets. I’m not sure borla offers along those lines but there are options out there. You’d want that single inlet to be 3” to match your y pipe and you’d need to have a 3” flange welded to it so it can bolt up to the y pipe. The outlets you’d want to match your midpipe which sounds to be stock. You could get 2.25” and have the exhaust shop reduce it down to tie into your factory midpipe.
Speed Culture Studios Thank you, sir. I almost wish I never got the y pipe and kept the stock piece 🤦🏽♂️. But I do like what the y pipe has done. Its just that it’s kind of a monkey wrench if I want to do anything else to my exhaust system going forward 🤦🏽♂️
Daniel Adame I agree with you. I started with the y pipe as well which only lasted a few months before changing everything. I would have skipped it if I had to do it again!
Thank you thank you for this video. I was trying to find a solution to my issue with my g37 after i installed hfc and kept the stock resonators and muffler. So even in my system, with high flow cats, I still have plenty of rasp. The only difference that I’m aware of between high flow cats and the OEM cats is the size of the honeycomb in there. So that wasn’t my first suspect.
Planning on adding a longer resonator; hopefully that’s the answer.
Longer resonator should help!
Engineering explained has some competition 🤭
All jokes aside, great video your car sounds 👌
🍻
Haha I’ve seen one of their videos. Sway bars maybe...🤔 thanks a lot for watching!
Very informative, makes a lot sense after seeing it on paper literally drawn out lol.great video brotha
Thanks for watching!
I don’t know man, I got used to it and learned to love it. I do remember thinking it was broken. Lol and got me the steering wheel great suggestion. Me and my brother are going to converted to white and carbon fiber finish.
Nice combo!
High flow cats definitely help too compared to test pipes!
Speed Culture Studios without a doubt! No CEL, and once they’re warmed up, no bad smell either. Definitely the best choice when it comes to daily driving and wanting a less restrictive exhaust
Pitskate definitely
I like the rasp...love my girlfriend, she just gave me a haircut... barbershop's are still closed in NYC
I'd love to see a picture of your exact setup from underneath
Check out my most recent exhaust video--SCS Custom Catback Picture is included.
I got no resonator and just different basically free flow mufflers on my 04 maxima :) sounds great
I've been a nissan tech for 27yrs,like any rasp toned exhaust just buy a quality vibrant rezzy, the quite cores work best!Problem solved!Everyone make it seem complicated, these tubes create rasp, sound frequency can be adjusted by canceling itself out with a better resonator,it's all common sense people!I built my own exhaust in my driveway and u need quality to get a good sound!
Great vid. And it's actually educational and not just fluff... like so many videos on youtube.
Thanks! Trying to put out good stuff!
Excellent VQ RASP breakdown! EPIC Hoodie spotted at 15:11 LOL
Lol heck yeah!
It almost sounds counter intuitive but larger piping seems to help with rasp when paired with good resonators/mufflers. Honda v6s with pre cat deletes seem to deal with this a lot with the exhaust options that are out there
Yeah the larger diameter allows the sound waves/frequencies to lengthen out a bit making them less abrasive on the ear
I kinda like the rasp tbh
😂😂😂😂
Some do!
It’s only because Nissan wanted it be supercarish
Same bru idk why ppl dont lmaoo
Here also another idea they sell resonated downpipes from hks that could help alot with that rasp as well that's what I'm planing on buying soon for my car
Appreciate that, I always wondered how mufflers that you could see straight through worked. Makes perfect sense now
Excellent!
3:14 it actually sounds like my stock 37s, but man does it sound sooooo good!!
In the future, I’m going to attempt to put resonated test pipes and with a custom exhaust(2.25 inch all the way) with an H-pipe with resonators to see if it will give a deep tone and hopefully there won’t be a lot of rasp.
Resonated h pipe and resonators our back should sound just fine!
I have that with berk resonated test pipes it's loud af hella rasp I replaced my resonators with flowmaster fx's nd it's super loud
Have you ever experienced a weird hissing sound. I’m having this issue coming from the passenger side. Only can hear at low speeds. Usually when I’m driving slow in my neighborhood and under 35/40 mph.
Do you have test pipes? Sometimes broken flex pipe will cause hissing too
I put high flow cats on my G37 and got rasp, i thought something was broken LOL. Glad it's not just me, i'm used to it now though
Definitely not just you lol
Great video!! I'm loving my Motordyne shockwave with the ART pipes on my G37 coupe 😍😍😍
Good informative video. I’m going to do the same setup as you except I’m leaving my cats in. Don’t wanna be really loud but not too quiet either. See what happens
It’s pretty tame with factory cats but still sounds nice with a deep rumble.
The q50 is my first official sports car, and when i first heard rasp i thought something was wrong with the car
Understandable! It’s a very raspy platform!
That’s most v6 engines in general, my c350 sounds exactly the same.
So I watched your video on the $500 exhaust system as well and took from it the two parts I felt would do just what I needed for my 2016 Q70L 3.7 AWD and that was the Borla mid muffler and the two Flowmaster resonators. Sounds and runs way better than stock. Thank you
Great to hear! And those really are the main parts of that system
Thanks for the info. Resonators do make one hella diff
Add resonators where your factory resonators were
@@SpeedCultureStudios Thank you so much for your reply :)
I kinda like how these cars start up.. I had mines straight pipe..was extremely loud..wife hated it..so I got magnaflow and it seem better I guess.. miss straight pipes tho lol
Lol. They definitely have a nice idle straight piped. My wife hated it as well!
but i also went from a test pip with straight X Pip to a duel in n out muffler x pip
BUT NOW i lost the loudness that i love
especially when you start it up and gets heads turning
also when your at lights reving it up to be loader then the car next to you
is there not a set up to keep the extreme loudness and get rid of rasp
can a step 2 tune increase loudness
and also with the duel x pip muffler stop a flame map
You got a lot going on here. I’m not sure what you’re saying.
If you’ve installed a resonator recently, just give it time. The volume will come back as the packing material breaks in.
Otherwise, one way to get some volume back is to install electronic cut outs. You can push a button and open valves that will make the car loud, then you can close them back up for normal driving
@@SpeedCultureStudios yea I just installed MagnaFlow tru x resonated muffler at the mid pip section
now sounds like they way I had it back when I had the oem cats in
but if the packing material brakes in, will that not bring back the rasp
Great video and excellent descriptions appreciated 🙏💪
How does this change if you have a turbo though. Doesn't turbo especially with a cast manifold eliminate most of the rasp already?
Yes turbos really muffle the sound down quite a bit
@@SpeedCultureStudios so probably won't need as many resonators then? I'm asking I'm general I don't have a nissan it's more for my 2jz less rasp more smoother tone
I have takeda catback exhaust. No rasp at all. Take a look at it and let me know what you think!
However, if you’d like to retain the test pipes, some nice resonators immediately after your x pipe would help a great deal.
everytime i release my foot on the gas with a gear on rasp comes will resonator helps? thanks
Yes!
really dealt with it on my altima coupe
I have a g35 sedan 2005 yesterday I put Megan racing test pipes and it’s stock exhaust just resonator delete on it no intake, the problem that I have it’s when accelerate at a dig it doesn’t have the same power it loss power and when I do a Stop it shakes and make a raspy noise, what would u recommend me to do bro
You need a tune with test pipes
Test pipes and muffler delete sounds nasty. You probably will not like it. Look at my very first dyno video and you’ll see
@@SpeedCultureStudios Ahhh ok I feared that would be the case.
@@gods1hell1spawn10011 The boral is the muffler that is located right after the test pipes. Thats going to help with the rasp.
Look at my performance exhaust video. It lists all the parts with links and shows how to set it up. High flow cats should not trigger a CEL
Speed Culture Studios is check it out ASAP.
He literally just did a whole video about this! 😳😳
Love that sound
I completely understand where you're coming from. I'm currently not running any resonators at all but have art pipes, a thick y pipe (doesn't have thin collector) and only a muffler exhaust tip since I went 3 inch single. I do have some rasp but i kind of like the hint of rasp it provides. Almost like adding distortion to an instrument is kind of how I view it but just as with that, too much and it sounds horrendous. You mind if I send you some sound clips on I.G for your opinion on my setup?
Exactly! And of course. Send them!
What do you think about straight piping from the cats and back.
Sounds terrible
This is what im talking about quality videos!!
Thanks Joe!
what is your exhaust setup in this video i love it and i wanna replicate it
Check out my scs catback video. All the details are provided including links!
I know you said you hated the combination of test pipes and muffler delete, but would adding the mid muffler eliminate some of the rasp?
Well it’s not a muffler delete if you replace the muffler with a ...muffler😉 but yes it should help-you may still have some rasp though so just be prepared.
Speed Culture Studios ha thank you very true I forgot that “mid muffler” you called a resonator. Your videos are really helpful
meharty007 Glad to help!
Yeah when manufactures call things mufflers but they are technically resonators, it can get confusing.
I have non resonated lower down pipes , and a full catback exhaust with NO resonators and its raspy at certain rpms, what resonator size would you recommend? Its a 3.0t btw Anything will help.
I would look for resonators that are 18-20” in length and 4” in overall diameter. One for reach side of the exhaust.
Thanks
I would yes. It’s the cheap metal of the y pipe causing the rasp, you are exactly correct.
@@SpeedCultureStudios yes about the resonator or the mini mufflers? Or should I just add the resonator
Will that borla muffler work with a g37 sedan? I just did a resonator delete and want to replace that resonator delete with this borla muffler
Yes it works
@@SpeedCultureStudios ok, thanks for the suggestion
Can I just run the resonators
only I have stock cats on my q50 or should I get everything you mentioned?
If you keep stock cats, I’d just get resonators and an x pipe rather than the borla
does Adding an intake change the tone and character of the exhaust?
would K n N replacement oem filters be effecient as aftermarket intake systems
I’ve talked about this a ton over the years. Some people say it changes the exhaust note-it doesn’t.
Check out my other videos for intake vs filters.
Help!!!
You could replace the manzo mufflers with vibrant street power mufflers. They tone rasp down quite a bit.
Yes just add some resonators
@@SpeedCultureStudios thank you always helping I appreciate it
Your setup sounds nice
Thank you!
@@SpeedCultureStudios would borlan 400286 be something your talking about ?
Takk101 I’m not seeing that but borla is good
Love how your Q sounds. So this is helpful but still kinda lost, basically find someone who can customized the pipes, get a borla, then get some resonators?
It’s not just “someone.” Just go to an exhaust shop. That’s what they do. I have all the pieces listed in the description. A lot of shops will have this stuff or can order it for you.
could you leave the stock resonators on? with a muffler delete and test pipes or would it be hella raspy.
Super raspy
I felt bad cold starting my car before 7am with test pipes stillen resonators and muffler delete
How did you set that Clock by nav? I have 17 3.0t i don't want to see nav all the time don't know how to change it.
I don’t have Nav so it’s my default display, but I’m sure you can set it to something else-at least temporarily-by pushing the display button on the center counsel
@@SpeedCultureStudios thanks
Here’s the conclusion I came to through extensive non-relenting research on this subject lmao:
The Gemini catback for the coupe/370’s have NO hissing or rasp with HFC’s or test pipes unlike the 3.7 sedan sedan version and here’s MOSTLY why:
resonators are ON the Y-pipe (closer to the cats) on the coupe/370 version.
@@SpeedCultureStudios i dont think I can get x pipe on AWD or can I? Also recommendations?

Hey there! Are you still active on this? Would love to post a question about my current exhaust setup and what your thoughts are on fixing the rasp.
Always active

Anyone else dealing with same low knocking sound at around 1100 -1300 rpm..? I'm thinking of getting a kit replacing chain, tensioner, guides, water pump.. what do you think. Anyone else been through this..?
Edgar Guzman that is in fact could be your idler pulley I just changed it and had the same exact noise u did. or your serpentine belt. change both of them and change your pulleys.
if i just take muff off and leave stock resnators on my 3.7 q50 how will that sound compared to your setup
Sounds quite different but I like a muffler delete on these as long as you leave factory cats.
Speed Culture Studios is it significantly louder?
ToXic FallZone it’s hard to say. It’s a different tone. I don’t have cats so it’s pretty loud, but it’s deeper because of the larger diameter exhaust and large resonators, so it almost doesn’t seem that much louder. I haven’t had a “muffler delete” for a long time so I don’t even remember. Check out my old muffler delete video and compare it to one of my new ones.
That’s what mine has done to it and it sounds good
Franklin Aguilar does it pop at all or have any drone?
Awesome explanation! Super informative.
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
Hey buddy, I’ve been searching for some of those Flowmaster resonators and can’t seem to find any. I’m sure that most resonators are similar in construction but as you were saying, length and girth count. The flowmasters that you have installed are what dimensions? I have found some that look promising, 20” overall length, canister is 16”, 2.5”in/out, canister is 3.5” diameter. Looks to be packed with fibreglass.

Speed Culture Studios , ah I understand now. They are not shipping to Canada due to increased demand in the USA. Lol, stimulus checks.... 🤣
This is random but why don’t you put your car into sport mode?
It’s in personal mode. It’s sport mode with active trace control off.
Anthony Pinelli only the noobs don’t know
Ey bro, will i get a cel if install a motordyne art pipes? Or should i just go with a catback ark grip? Currently i have a remark axle back set up.. thanks
If you replace the cats with anything other than high flow cats, you’ll get a CEL.
I did the resonated test pipes and fx resonators in the middle and the exhuast sounded like farts for some reason
I wanted to stay as close as possible to the stock sound, it sounds good but it sounds very raspy when i step on it at a stop sing or light. I think im going with the resonated x pipe by magnaflow, thoughts please
Thank you
Depends on how raspy it is. A resonated x pipe might help, but you may need something a bit more substantial.
Will that CF steering wheel fit in my 2013 g37x
No
@@SpeedCultureStudios damm, is there any CF steer wheel for the 37?? That jawn looks sexy i need it asap lol
@@jrtrippy1795 check with jaliscos_carbon fiber on IG. He has them from time to time.
Any downside on non run flat tires? I have a q50 3.7 liter.
The only downside-They aren’t run flats...
But seriously, the positives outweigh the negatives. If you’re uncomfortable, put a spare in your trunk or get AAA. Run flats are awful.
i want a little rasp. thats why i went with non resonated test pipes
Best resonated test pipes for vq35hr?
How were you able to have an analog clock instead of the maps?
No nav.
I feel you pain Nissan 350gt coupe auto is the same 😂
