This is simple. This scripture says, “if you love me, you’ll obey my commands”. The key words, “if you love me”. This is talking about us loving God, not the other way around. God loves us even in our sin and imperfections, but that doesn’t mean He’s okay with us sinning.

Read the Bible its a love story to us He is our heavenly father teaching us and picking us up when we fall and ask for His help. If you do not ask He will not answer you. @@shinebritechosen thank you! I reread my comment. I may have sounded like I was saying that God doesn’t love us, but that wasn’t the point I was making. The point I was making was specific to the verse, “if you love me, you’ll obey my commands”. That verse isn’t taking about Gods love for us or that if we don’t follow His commands He won’t love us. This verse is say that if we truly love God, we will obey His commands out of the love we have for Him and to honor Him. Thanks for the kind message! God bless you.

when you look at what Paul is saying in his letters, it states clearly only the children of Isaac can receive the promise,..
This is why the scribes and Pharisees were persecuting them, you see the scribes and Pharisees were actually the children of Ishmael... and Paul was basically saying they were not included..
Galatians 4:28¶Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.
29But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now.
30Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.

Paul wouldn't write people at Rome, telling them those things, if those people were not the"northern House" the remnant of the bloodline of Isaac..
Romans 9 7Neither, because they are the bloodline of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy bloodline be called.
8That is, They which are the children of the flesh,= Ishmael ) are not the children of God: but the children of the promise=( Isaac) are counted for the bloodline.
9For this is the word of promise, At this time will I come, and Sara shall have a son.
Note, Paul in Romans 99 refers you to this prophecy..
Genesis 17:21 But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, which Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year.
Now in doing this,Paul is making it clear they are Abraham's promised seed or bloodline through Sarah, would be the only ones to receive the promise

The real issue, I think, is our collective, adolescent view of love as something that creates the most comfortable and circumstantially happy situation. Love has requirements, and I don't necessarily mean in order to obtain it, rather to properly receive the benefit of it.
"If you obey My commandments you will be My treasured people."
This is obviously speaking of a place of honor and regard, both from God as well as from the surrounding nations, but has little to do what we would refer to, today, as love. Think of it in terms of a parent child relationship. If you are a halfway decent parent you don't just want good things for your children, you want them to develope into good people, and hopefully good things will come their way as a result. When you see your child doing well, especially as they get older and are taking on more responsibility, you tend to let your pride show, and you hopefully reinforce this behaviour with strong affirmation and shared affection. But what if your child isn't doing so well and they have a lase fare attitude towards the things you've spent countless hours, blood, sweat, and tears to instill in them? Do you have the same response in heaping praise upon them? Not if your any kind of a good father. You may express concern for the wayward youth, try to stear them in the right direction, but eventually there comes a time where both children have crafted a set of wings and regardless of their build, they will have to take their creations into the world and attempt to fly.
Now the question is, of which of the two children did the father love? The answer is simple in that he loves them both, but with only one was he truly able to have delight in. And the second question is this: of the two children, which was more apt to receive the love of his father? Because true obedience is not merely doing what someone says (just because they said it), but it is an expression of love and trust when someone truly obeys their parents good teachings from the heart.

@@uniquemetal is that what happened? This is a common theory about the dinosaurs and I do not make any counter arguments. The only issue is, I was not there so I cannot tell you for sure. The facts, as you state, are not provable today, yet are probable, and may have happened. But again, neither of us were there. Yet it is called fact. So in both worlds, yours and mine, we have taken similar leaps of faith/reason to place our trust in something we do not fully understand. My believe in God is not unfounded, yet any "proofs" I might offer can be easily refuted by an unwillingness to hear. It is also quite interesting that you chose to comment here, as though your non-belief is so very important that we who have some belief must be chastised by reason. But if course you do not come with evidence because you have most likely not given much, if any thought to the existence of God and therefore have no points to make in either argument. But of course, this is your own reasoning for whatever reasons you have. You have come to this by use of your mind, but you may say of your brain. Yet who is truly able to describe the connection of consciousness, mind, and brain? We do our best to integrate a philosophical/scientific explanation in order to understand in a material definition of that which works in concert with the physical, yet exists immaterial. We think, and may possibly be able to quantify the matter of the universe, as well as the dark matter. However, to have an account of all that is matter is still a mystery to us. What is it and what is its multiplicity of functions? We simply do not understand the complexity of the natural universe in it's fullness. If that which is visible is not completely known to us, how is that which is invisible and not material, completely known? Science is amazing and can explain a great deal. Yet it has its limitations and our experience sometimes ventures outside of those boundaries. So to say there is no God, definitively, is a foolish statement. For anyone of any intelligence should know that true knowledge begins when we admit that there are things of which we have no understanding.

I think God's love is unconditional in the sense that He loves you for your intrinsic worth as His creation, a love that loves regardless of how far you fall or how high you rise, akin to a love a parent has for their child but imagine amplified to infinity. However, His nature of absolute truth cannot tolerate the wrong that humanity does. He loves the sinner, but hates the sin. And I think it all ties back to Christ being the answer to that dilemma of His unconditional love for humanity and his intolerance for sin. It does say in the epistles that He is faithful when we aren't, and nothing could ever separate us from His love. I think it's our nature as humans and our own limitations that fail us in our ability to grasp God's love despite our sins. In other words, I think God loves us unconditionally, but He loves us from a broken heart.
Anyway, that's my two-cents on it. I hope you all take care and would like you all to know that you guys are loved by someone, be it your family, your friends, and God. So, friends, if anything, let's be kind and love another regardless of our beliefs and thoughts, to seek to lift each other up and encourage one another to be better, to not tolerate wrongdoing but to be gentle in rebuke, and, of course, to live loved.

I've heard it put that God's love is unconditionED but not unconditionAL. i.e. it's offered to everyone regardless of 'merit', but there are conditions attached, which actually are very practical as has been discussed: if you don't respond back by listening and acting on what God says then you cannot actually receive the blessing He offers: not because He withholds it but because you cannot receive it.

I can love my children whole heartedly… apart from anything they say or do / good or evil… it’s the quality of our relationship that is conditional upon their obedience. My love, my hopes and dreams for them, the relationship I want with them never changes… but the reality of our relating is impacted by their choices. No matter how many times I call them back to me or go after them to the dark places they wander, if they don’t join me… the relationship status is in a cursed/divided state rather than a blessed/united state. All the while my love remains unconditional and desiring to be in a unified relationship with them.

Unconditional love is, in and of itself, an ideal. Encouragement towards other ideals comes from the intrinsic value of said ideals. If I value truth I will seek truth because I find value in it, and not because I internalized the pathological idea that I am only worthy of love if I do this or that. In fact, if people feel unconditionally loved, that removes a burden from our hearts, and this frees us to pursue other ideals. Not out of fear, but out of joy.

I like what you've said here. And it does depend on how one defines love also, as well as values. Because we cannot define God's love using our own measure and then lay that upon Him. It has to be love as He defines it, which is found in 1 Corinthians 13.4-8a.
And I think the 'always hopes and always perseveres' could resolve JP's argument to the good about encouragement towards an ideal. When I see potential in someone, I remain in hope of a better future regarding them and encourage them to persevere through the hard times to attain it, for example.

Unconditional love does not mean the tolerance of actions that do not reflect, in the experience of time, the divine essence. A person can take someone’s life, if necessary and still feel a connection to that person. It’s not uncommon for soldiers to bury their enemies or even write to their families.
The nature of God is eternal; meaning it is always available to us. The father in the Prodigal Son, was always waiting.

This one is actually very simple. If God's people don't obey and loose His favor, God still loves them. God favoring and choosing a people for service is not His love, it is a part of it. And furthermore, His loosing of His favor from a people who do not obey Him (according to His promise) not only has nothing to do with love in itself, but in context it shows His love for the other peoples who would be lead into suffering if God's favor was on a people that was living in abject evil. Because God has chosen His people an a set apart example to lead people to Him through their example of living in line with objective truth and the one true God's favor.

First, you are thinking in modern, juvenile terms, which is a rookie mistake. The origin of justice in the Biblical sense doesn't come from "behaving according to what is morally right and fair", that's the outcome of being just, not what makes you just in first place [see the difference?]
What makes you just, following its original Biblical sense [which is the one you should consider if you are going talking about it and willing to criticize it], is to follow God's will, for all transcendence is find in Him and comes from Him. He is transcendence itself. In fact, צדק [Tzadek], which is the original Hebrew term, the one we translate as "justice", actually and more accurately means "righteousness". But how can you even know who is righteous [just] in first place? And the answer is he who makes God's will. So, indeed, is not up to you to say to God what is just and what isn't, for He is justice Himself. He, and He alone, gets to decide how life works all right, for He is the Creator.
In the end, God is all loving, but he is also all just, indeed. We don't get to tell Him how things should be, that's juvenile attitude at best, an infantile understanding of the subject, but God knows best.

It's actually quite simple, God is referring to Israel's bloodline Covenant from Genesis 17 18 when you look at Paul's letters he's teaching you clearly nobody will be justified by the keeping of the law the Commandments are a secondary Covenant that was added to Israel's primary bloodline Covenant it actually starts in Genesis 3 15 and is carried over throughout the history of Israel all the way to the coming of the Christ

Here's the problem so many of us have with God. How he claims to love us and want to help us unconditionally, we suffer greatly for things that he could have easily prevented while not having affected our free will.
IF were to find a drowning person would you just pull their head above the water just enough of the time to keep them from drowning, or would you do everything you could to get them into your boat and onto the shore so they can recover?
Too often we find ourselves crying out to God for help and the best we get is just barely keeping us going despite his having the capacity to do far more for us with ease.

One needs to be a believer first, 1 Corinthians 2:12-14 ..and know their Bible, to some extent before "leading a Bible study" ..otherwise they're mishandling the Word of God.
I appreciate Jordan's intellectualism ..but it may be a stumbling block for him..at some point he needs to take what he knows and accept what Christ says by faith in Him..not what the world teaches.

There are some great comments here but this modern notion of unconditional love is just an attempt to make God more palatable. We forget that He is God; we don't get to make the rules. "Nobody comes to the Father except through me", said Jesus. D.L. Moody wrote "people forget that love has no place in a courtroom". We have to accept that we are sinners before we can accept forgiveness; that's the point. His love is in His forgiveness. This is a really interesting subject isn't it!!

I think there's often confusion about the difference between unconditional love and unconditional acceptance / approval / relationship. The fact that Scripture says, "while we were still sinners Christ died for us." and "God does not want any to perish but everyone to come to repentance." shows His unconditional love and desire to save everyone. But loving unconditionally does not necessitate unconditional acceptance or relationship. As Jesus said, "not everyone who says to Me 'Lord, Lord' will enter the kingdom of heaven but only he who does the will of my Father". God loves you where you are but if you want a relationship with Him and a place in His kingdom then you have to obey Him which starts with saving faith.

Read Ezekiel 16 and focus on verses 59 and onwards. God remembers his covenant first. God is always the first mover. He doesn't remember Israel for her obedience, he remembers her for his own sake.
God never enforces the implicit threat that Dennis reads in the passage from Exodus. Israel always remains chosen, not on account of anything they did, but on account of who God is.

As a father, if my love for my son and daughter is conditional on him/her rising up from his/her insufficiency, and they are always falling short, then I am effectively never loving them.
The conflation is the word love with toleration/approval. You can love someone you disapprove of because if you approved of self destructive behavior it wouldn’t be love. Love can be unconditional, but it also works both ways. It's possible to get yourself in situation where love of another is not seen, recognized or unfelt. It can be even that love of another is seen as an opression or hate.
A love of someone who is above, furthermore, has to take into account all those below who are, among themselves, equals or should be equal. So if a parent, for example, has 5 children but one decides to beat and impose his own will over those others, and he is restrained, not only because he hurts his bothers but by doing so also hurts himself, how would that one see his restraint? 1. Jail is the governments control not yours. You would let him go to jail but the more correct way to describe God's situation is that you would punish your child. The question is would you punish your child forever?
2. All our punishment is temporarily even jail time (when we die it is over) no one would punish someone eternally, also that wouldnt be just. What crime can be so big that it deserves never ending punishment?
3. You say you tried to show them the right way, doesnt that mean you failed in your attempts? Do you know that is also called sin? Sin is not just doing bad things in its core sin means missing the mark, that is why all of us are sinners the moment we are born, we miss our mark of living (we start the proces of dying when we are born).
Now before you say Jesus also died. Jesus needed to die in order to show everlasting life. So He did not miss the mark there.
But to get back at your failed attempts. God does not try, God does and succeeds in all of His plan. Otherwise God fails (sins) to save majority of His creation and satan succeeds to take as many as possible away from God. Who is the real winner in this scenario?

my answer to what's being discussed @ around 5:00, is that firstly I remember the phrase in the book, something along the lines of: without holiness no one will see the Lord. Then I'm also reminded of stories in near death experiences and trips to heaven and things where people claim they saw His face but while out of the body, or the face of Jesus, but yet others that couldn't see His face because of the brightness of the light coming off of Him, so I consider depending on that person's particular holiness this not only determines placement in terms of where in heaven they go, but also to what extent they see and perceive God when they're there. Another phrase is: No one can see me (God) and live. (speaking about a person in the body), this would imply that merely seeing God while in the body will result in death. We're reminded of when Jesus made a reply to the people who were rounding Him up to face charges before His crucifixion, and His response was: "I Am", to which everyone within earshot of this fell down backwards as if blown back by a gust of wind, but this was just from God speaking. The Holy power of God was capable to level entire armies that came against the Israelites, or even decimate entire groups of the Israelites themselves who were on the wrong side of civil wars. Man's own absence of holiness because of the fall into sin has brought about the wages of death, whereas God through Jesus says of Himself He is the bread of life. If man, who is mortal without God, and given to the wages of death, meets the power of God adversely, who is Holy, whatever is unholy immediately dies likely by nature of simply being that: mortal by way of being unholy.

I found God's love and I didn't work for it at all. I just led a life of always putting others before myself and doing what I thought was right..what Jesus would do. A perfect life I did not lead. I made mistakes along the way but I learned from each one. I'm still learning as we all are and will continue to develop throughout our lives. I think of the times I've faulted..one time it was a night my dad was going to die due to a medical error..I was destroyed in my heart. Another time when I was verbally aggressive I remember speaking of the time the pharmaceutical companies almost cost me my daughters life because they approved a serotonin med that made her wanted to kill herself etc..with evil stalkers included..I've fought to keep my child alive for the last 9yrs. One stalker trying to get my daughter again a week before he beheaded another blonde that looked like my girl. (Brandon Clark Utica murder) other disappointments I've experienced is writing my government for 13yrs trying to help and being ignored as if I meant nothing. So when I think of how I would judge thyself...I made it! I survived! I didn't hurt anyone or myself while I experienced all of those horrors and I never changed what was in my heart. To care about people's suffering and to want to make a difference in this world because I knew of so so many wrongs in this world ..ways people were hurting that I could identify them and try to prevent others from enduring the same.

Something to consider here:
Even beyond Prager's rather pragmatic view of love, unconditional love can be challenged also in that God has set conditions upon creation for Him to love it. For one, God chose to create, which establishes the first condition of His love (an existential one and a consequential one). For another, God chose to elevate and structure His creation alike to Himself and also according to His ingenuity in degrees, with humanity explicitly being stated by God in His primal idea that humans are made in His image.
So even in people appealing to God's role as Creator and humans being created to be uniquely as He is, those are all conditions that God Himself chose to set up for His love, and it is ultimately the love that He will only honor, meaning that if someone wants His love they must attain that standard. That is why Jesus, the only One to maintain that standard and to provide access to that standard, is necessary, and even He Himself is the Word, who is also the Creator.
So, even on the grounds that people here are appealing to God's love being "unconditional," the vast majority are appealing to conditions to establish that.
Love is actually quite beautiful and very deep once we let go of a need to see it as without conditions. The beauty of a parent for their child, or a soldier for his nation, or a teacher for their students, and in the reverse directions-- all unique relationships that create unique conditions that rule and establish the love and form its beauty.

I think it's more of a thing where God wants to help us like a parent telling the child to wear a coat in the winter and the promise is that the child won't catch a cold. The child is free to disobey but has to suffer the consequences either way. It would be weird if God said: do or don't do it, I will bless you regardless ... I know this is only focused on Exodus but in a greater context for Christians at least, God does love unconditionally because He sent Christ to pay the price for our sins. So believing in and accepting Christ is the only real condition of sorts required as a Christian at least. For Israel at the time though they didn't have that free pass. They needed to keep to God's commandments and covenant or else face the consequences.
