I'm surprised the girl wasn't the main singer of the group given there's 4-1 in guy/girl ratio lol but the guy is actually a good singer..and this song actually worked very well. A guy singing a girl song doesn't turn out good in some talent shows but this one did but i wonder if the group will be hindered later on with such small numbers compared to groups that have a lot of back up and it showed in the middle...B

Me too. I think it took them a while to figure out what they were hearing--Shawn referred to it with "I swear y'all were cheating" and I think Ben thought it was Kevin. It's really what knocked everybody's socks off and made them sound like they were not of this world.

overtone singing is a technique that makes it sound like there are two notes being sang at the same time. Something Avi has truely mastered.
I actually was just rewatching this again and noticed it for the first time today and was looking for people who heard it too in the comments. Too bad they dont let Kevin and Avi do their segments during their concerts anymore to showcase their unique abilities, Kevin with the chello(I love his version of Julie-o) and Avi’s overtone singing.
Fun fact--Avi was taught this skill while at college by his friend Joe Caigoy, who later entered the Sing-Off with the group the Filharmonic.

It is amazing to think when they started this, Sing Off was their "ticket out of Arlington", now they are singing with stars like Jason Derulo, Dolly Parton, Lindsey Stirling, selling out concerts, touring the world multiple times, and basically becoming one of the most popular music groups in the world, with only their voices (and on occasion a violin and/or cello).

"I swear y'all was cheatin'". Totally! Avi was doing 2 notes at once, the beatboxing was like two people at once, they had 4 part harmonies with incredible solos, and they loaded in all manner of sound effects at the same time. It's not fair a quintet could do all that, yet they did!
I’m actually here because of that! I’m enjoying their music on Apple and I’m sitting here stunned amazed and not believing these sounds I’m hearing could be all acapella. I’ve come to hear the beginning and yeah they are just that good!

My only regret watching this is the fact that I'm not any sort of professional music artist. You could tell that the judges' backgrounds in music enabled them to enjoy the complexity of the remix in ways that the average Joe Schmo could not. Lucky them!

Of The Falls I agree with what you're saying. Because for untrained ears like mine, I can't relate when I find their arrangement and tone good, but the judges were not completely happy about them.

Mitch and Kirstie didn't do anything super remarkable in this song though. they did get more praise further in the competition.
Mitch did receive some praise through the competition, Kirstie received probably the least but in my opinion without Kirstie they would have been lacking a LOT - her parts were maybe not out front but were a key part of the group - the group without her would not have been the Pentatonix that won the competition - if you get my drift.

Yeah it bothered me too. Kevin's beat boxing was fantastic, but I think that what the judges were particularly hearing in this video were Avi's overtones. Did they ever actually mention the overtone singing in any of the critiques? I can't remember, and I feel like on some of the videos (like this one) the overtone sound was a crucial part of the sound effect.

Rikuismyboy A lot of comments from the judges are edited out. I'm sure Ben Folds knew because he is well versed in music terminology and history. There were a lot of groups on this show, and the show was only allowed to air for a few weeks or so so they had very limited time to comment. Also, they had to liit their comments to what the audience (people watching) would understand. Not everyone knows what an overtone is. Many fans only know now because of Avi explaining it.
now that I'm familiar with Avi's overtone singing, I can hear it here so easily.

Konnie The Hero I can't for the lifeof me remember which interview it is, but yes, I'm 100% sure Avi has either said it in an interview or in a ptxvlog. If you really want to hear him say it, I suggest checking out the youtube channel ptxnewsandstuff for interviews because it's basically the only channel I use for Ptx's interviews :)

Well, they didn't. They met the day before the auditions for the show, which were not aired, and I believe they sang "Telephone" by Lady Gaga for those. But they are still incredibly in sync here for how short a time they had been working together!

I meant that Kirstie, Mitch and Scott worked with Avi and Kevin for the first time the day before the audition. To be able to pull-off a performance like that when the group had been formed a few days before is quite an achievement :)
