Most important parts of Lelouch's final plan is actually the preparations that aren't mentioned in detail but are there with hindsight.
He had Jerimiah crush all possible opposing nobility ensuring there could be no new sovereignty in the future for Britannia besides Schnizel, who when geassed for the good of the world(following Zero), is superior even to Lelouch according to himself and Cornelia.
He sacrificed the vast majority of Britannia's military's power in the final battle making it so no one could make use of it anymore, with many of his siblings having been geassed into the armed forces.
Japan produced 80% of the world supply of Sakuradite, the material needed for super conductors for knightmares and power supplies, mined from Mt. Fuji. As a result Japan has no more after he forced Mt. Fuji to explode with it, ensuring Japan's safety from future invasion and drastically increasing the cost of creating knightmares, the cost of war.
Jerimiah and Anya are together in "retirement" meaning that should future issues arise, Suzaku has 2 of the strongest pilots in the world he can call upon to aid him, without having to involve Kallen who can now experience a normal life.
And lastly he never tarnished Schnizel's image to the world as he only got to use the Damocles against Lelouch, and no one besides his inner circle knew his plan, so his diplomatic ties remain in tact as he serves Zero which in turn is Nannally going forward.
It wasn't just "everyone hates me and I'm dead so we get along", it had several geo-political points to make the outcome actually work and make sense. Code Geass sometimes flew by the string of its pants but the final few episodes did an amazing job bringing things together and producing a coherent ending that closed everything.

Exactly. Biggest issue with the AOT ending was that Eren left several loose ends behind - did he just expect the Yaegarists to disappear? Did he think there wouldn't be animosity between them and the rest of the world?

All fantastic points! Another piece: the black knights were the consolidated military forces from all nations other than Britannia. Both being so depleted leaves no country or side with standing resources to use military force to capitalize on the power vacuum. At least not for a while - long enough to stand up new leaders with peace and collaboration in mind.

I disagree. Maybe it's good relative to other series, but that's just a knock on many series not having a good ending at all.
CG has a good ending, but it's very idealistic and naive and convenient. Overly reliant on feelings over logic to carry it. Doesn't really fit the narrative of CG IMO. People have short memories or something in that show and lapses in cognitive function to just gloss over everything that happened to make the ending work.
It would work in Gurren Lagann, which has a great ending, but that's due to the nature of the story.

This ending is beautiful and I like it as a fantasy story but there is a reason why people consider the AOT one realistic and objectively with a better reaction by humanity and a lingering hope for a better world. • @Staicha
    @Staicha 3 месяца назад +51

Its astonishing how much had to be in place for the Zero Requiem to work.
    Two key things:
He had to separate Lelouch from Zero in the eyes of the Black Knights
He had to make himself and only himself the enemy of LITERALLY everyone
The first, he managed by confronting them in person, with Xingke finally refering to him as Lelouch being the enemy of the world instead of Zero. For Schneitzel, Zero and Lelouch were never separate, since he didnt have a connection with either of them beyond adversary. This was important for the geass command to work. Also important that Schneitzel could not see Zero kill Lelouch, as it would have fucked with his command. Like this, Zero was kept being a symbol for justice.
Secondly, making himself the sole enemy, he had to make a victim of
    - Suzaku: dead
    - Lloyd and co.: switched sides at last minute
    - his army: with the Black Knights knowing about Geass, they knew they were not willing. Also the wording "be my slaves" is interesting since it might also hold the resentment that comes from being a slave, hence they also cheer at the end.
    - Britannia as a whole- abolishing the aristocracy, the royal family and changing the chant to "All hail Lelouch" works to separate him as a ruler from his people, putting Britannia the country on the same level as any other country he overtook.
    - Jeremiah was left to destroy all unnecessary remaining Geasses and I guess to be exiled to an orange farm
It helps that those deciding the fate of the world going forwards were in on it, forcing them to be better for all the sacrifices to be worth it.
He also made sure there is a counter to the deadliest weapon in the world, so there is no arms race and blew up the biggest Sakuradite mine in the world.
The two issues I found were:
If anyone supported tyrant Lelouch and his policies without being Geassed because they were some kinda fanatics. There is always someone like that, in such a big population...
If any conspiracy theorist questions why he was killed with the same sword he himself was waving around at the deciding battle.

    • @Mariopwnzu
      @Mariopwnzu 3 месяца назад +7

I don't really have an issue with his own sword being used to kill him because it's kind of a callback almost to the reveal of Zero to the world where he showed up in a copy of Clovis' transport. Basically just Zero being a bit extra and flashy

  • @Rafaela_S.

About how the Plan worked long term, remember the UFN that Zero founded, one of the requirements to join was for a country to get rid of its own military power, but to protect them they had the black knights as an army.
At the start of the last battle the world was split into the UFN and Britania.
Nunnally got the power over Britania and most likely joined the UFN too. So now the World is united in a Federation, whos members don't have an own army.
In addition we got the Black Knights as saveguards of peace, with Zero (Suzaku) as their leader.
So I would asume that, there will be peace at least till Suzaku dies. Which at this point can still take 50-90 years in which the world as a whole could change.
I think it is realistic that it mostly works, there will be some problems and small upraisings sure. But mostly it should work.

@@lorenzozinco9664 Differences to WW2 are, that in the world of CG we have just two military forces left, the black knights with zero and britania with nunnally as their leaders. Which both are friends and want to keep the peace. As I already said most likely britania joined the UFN and disarmed their army, so that the Black Knights under Zero (Suzaku) is the last real army left and can keep other armys from forming.
While after WW2 we had two superpowers of which one would have wanted to expand even more. In addition we had many nations with national interests that led to wars and each with its own army.
We can't compare the end of code geass to anything in our world, since we never have been near an situation like in the code geass world. Where the whole world aside from a single force is disarmed and where this force contains people and a leader who just want to keep the peace.
May be idealistic, but in my opinion it would be possible this way.
Yes there ay be still a lot of hate in a lot of people, but they don't have the weapons to start a war over it.
And we have some places in peaceful countries, where former "tribes" or religious groups still hate each other to the death, but since they don't have weapons it does not escalate into a mini war.
Wars don't start with small people just living their lives, they start with leaders who want more power and already got the power to command a military force.
Sure the world of code geass will see some civil wars and some terrorism, but it is unlikely for full blown wars with nations against each other. And therefore the nations can work on rebuilding and improving instead of dumping a whole lot of money and workforce in armys.

Thank you two so much for giving this show a chance! I know us, as a fanbase for the show, stepped up to help make it the next show on the channel but honestly going in I still wasn't sure this would beat the other newer/more popular options at the time. It was a lot of fun to experience this one alongside you guys! Looking forward to the next one, guys! ❤

This ending is perfect 'cause Zero Requiem gives a satisfactory closure to the narrative arcs of all the characters, especially Lelouch and Suzaku. Suzaku finds the peace of mind he has been desperately seeking for 10 years by bringing peace to the world. Lelouch renounces control over the world and people, giving humanity back its free will and, at the same time, becomes a hero by giving his life for the common good and, therefore, the messiah who claimed to be like Zero by freeing to the world of hate and violence.
It's perfect 'cause the series resolves the question of whether the end justifies the means. _Yes, as long as you pay a price_ . Lelouch dies for the end and Suzaku lives to preserve the means used.
It's perfect 'cause Zero Requiem is a punishment for Lelouch and Suzaku. Suzaku, who wanted to die to avoid guilt, has to live assuming the identity of Zero to protect peace; while Lelouch, who wanted to live with his loved ones, has to die so that they can enjoy the kind world that he dreamed of. In this way they both atone for their sins.
It's perfect 'cause Lelouch redeems himself from the SAZ massacre and, at the same time, the series creates a parallel with the end of the first season. Both Lelouch and Euphemia are the centerpiece of an elaborate lie. She, who was a generous and kind princess who had the best intentions of helping the Japanese people with the SAZ, dies a genocidal liar and manipulator. He dies as the ruthless and megalomaniacal Demon Emperor who declared war on the world, even though he is actually the hero who saved it with Zero Requiem. Both became scapegoats for the bloodshed and trauma. Both were executed by Zero and the world celebrated their deaths without knowing what happened. However, Lelouch gladly accepts the role of villain, considering it deserved for him.
It's perfect 'cause it's a deliciously ironic twist. Suzaku who wanted to change the system from within destroys it as Zero (whom he hated), while Lelouch who wanted to destroy it reformed it as Emperor (whom he hated).
It's perfect 'cause the ending builds a parallel with Ep4 of the first season, creating a rounded closure. Zero appears for the first time in the unjust execution of an innocent man and reappears for the last time in the unjust execution of some rebels who fought for freedom and justice. Both parades were led by Jeremiah.
It's perfect 'cause Zero is established as a symbol of hope and the murder of the Demon Emperor becomes a metaphor that it is important to dream of a future since eventually things will improve no matter how gloomy and hopeless the present is. People will never stop fighting until they find happiness. That is why the world is worth fighting for.
It's perfect 'cause the foreshadowing of Ep5 of the first season is fulfilled: the White Knight (Suzaku) defeats the Black King (Lelouch). The foreshadowing that the series gave us in Ep1 of the first season is also fulfilled: "only those who are willing to die have the power to kill." Thus Lelouch shows that he is a person committed to his ideals.
It's perfect 'cause it falls in line with the series' stance that Lelouch and Suzaku can succeed in whatever they set their mind to, if they join forces.
It's perfect 'cause peace was a decision made by humanity. Lelouch and Suzaku literally ended all wars for a long time. The Damocles was destroyed along with all the F.L.E.I.J.A., no more Knightmares will be produced, there are no armies left, no one has the strength or desire to fight after the battle for control of the world. Nations have joined the FNU and now everyone is concentrating their efforts on addressing other problems. Even Britannia has become democratic since Nunnally became empress and took on the task of guiding the empire in the right direction. The epilogue narrated by Kallen is confirmation that Lelouch was right. In the end, free will and human nature won.
It's apotheosis for its composition: the voice acting, direction, editing, music and, above all, the script are at their highest peak. The ending coincides with the climax of the story and ties all the ends.
Geass has the same shape as the paper crane. It's the symbol of a wish. In this case, Lelouch's wish for humanity to continue advancing.
What a beautiful resolution! Code Geass is the best tragedy that has ever hit television screens and how lucky are those of us who have gotten to know it. Everyone applaud this masterpiece!

In the real world. After a figure such as Hitler died, a Cold War started and almost a third world war began. This ending is beautiful and I like it as a fantasy story but there is a reason why people consider the AOT one realistic and objectively with a better reaction by humanity and a lingering hope for a better world. Lelouch and Suzaku's fates are probably the thing I find the most interesting about the ending. Lelouch is doomed to die, despite being the one who looked towards a future and wanted nothing other than a happy world for his sister. While Suzaku is the one who has to kill him, despite yearning for death the entire story, and now he's forced to live as Zero, the savior of the world. Despite it being riddled in tragedy, it's such a perfect conclusion to both of their characters, and both of them at least have some relief, with Suzaku feeling like he found a way to repent for his sins, and Lelouch finally building a safe world for Nunnally.

When SNK's final aired, I saw lots of review that said SNK was basically a bad code geass story.
Curious, I watched code geass ending scene, and I spoiled myself SO HARD. But even without having seen the whole serie, the scene still gave me the shivers, and it convinced me I should look up for this anime, when I had always had an itch any time I saw an image from the show because I felt the characters bodies were weird and I wasn't sure the animation would satisfy me.
That's how powerful this ending is, because even as a total naive watcher, I felt emotions, I felt connection to characters I had seen for 2 minutes on the screen.
Then, I watched the entire series, and god that was incredible. It has become my favorite anime, I REWATCHED IT AGAIN RIGHT AFTER HAVING FINISHED IT, and THEN I basically rewatched it through these reviews a THIRD TIME, and still, I can't get enough of it.
So honestly, even with being spoiled the ending, I think people can still absolutely love it! Probably it's even more impressive when you are surprised when the zero requiem actually happens! But even without surprise, it's an incredible story to watch!

Lelouch who wanted to live with his sister in peace having to die and Suzaku who wanted to die having to live not even as a person but a mere symbol; the just punishment they arrived at for their sins. Even their positions, Lelouch, the devious prince who surpassed his imperialist father in conquering the entire world and Suzaku, the son of the last Prime MInister of Japan who kills the devious prince as Zero, the hero of the entire world. Lelouch and CC had a better ending in the original series. The alternate timeline only offers the ending that CluClu fans wanted to see and the only reason it exists is 'cause Sunrise was going through financial difficulties and their most profitable franchise (Gudam) was not successful, so they used CG and created an alternative universe based on fanservice. It has nothing to do with it being bad. The creators have already said that the series is in line with their vision and from their perspective it was a happy ending.

  • @AlicentviBritannia
    @AlicentviBritannia 3 месяца назад +23

It scares me a little to see this reaction. I hope K&M understood and appreciated the meaning of Zero Requiem and the beautiful evolution of Lelouch, otherwise the ending would have no impact on them. Lately they were focused on finding similarities between Code Geass and Attack on Titan and since it was inevitable to compare both endings, I'll make my contribution. Although both series analyze the same problem, they reach diametrically opposite conclusions. That is, the difference lies in the focus of the discourse and the cathartic effect well achieved in CG and failed in AOT (catharsis is the emotional effect that seeks to awaken fear and compassion in the public). I explain...
Code Geass and Attack on Titan are tragedies. Both tell the story of a civilization that lost its identity at the hands of a power and seeks its freedom. Both emphasize the will to live and move forward, despite the fact that the world is full of misery and suffering. In fact, the final message that the series transmit is similar. We can feel fear in the two endings since both series affirm that war is endless 'cause humanity is prone to falling into conflicts and repeting same mistakes (this is essentially why Schneizel and Charles wanted to bring an eternal peace).
AOT highlights violence and hatred as inherent traits of being human. From here comes the emblematic phrase "the world is cruel", to which another is soon added: "but it is also beautiful", 'cause, as Zeke and Armin explain, life is full of seemingly insignificant moments, which, in reality , they give meaning to life and for that reason it is worth fighting. However, the hopeful message is diluted by the conversation between Armin and Eren and the epilogue as they demonstrate that the Titans weren't the problem, but human nature. Human beings are fundamentally self-destructive and only survive on impulse. That absurd thing called "will to live." So it's like people didn't learn anything and just get what they deserve. As a consequence, a feeling worse than fear remains: horror.
On the other hand, CG maintains that it is worth fighting for as people will never stop seeking happiness. The world is constantly changing and will always continue to move forward. So even if things are bad now, they will get better in the end. Therein lies the importance of the future and, by extension, hope. It doesn't matter if people forget the Zero Requiem and go back to war. It's in their nature to learn to be better and try to make the world a better place. So humanity isn't only the problem, but also the solution. It's a more optimistic approach that sheds light on the human race, which becomes worthy of compassion.
Something similar happens with Lelouch and Eren. They're both tragic heroes. A tragic hero is a virtuous hero who is above average, but suffers as a result of his mistakes and shortcomings, becoming the author of his own downfall. Eren possesses the two most powerful titans and Lelouch is the prince of the oppressive empire with a genius intellect and a magic eye. Even both are characterized by having unwavering determination and clear convictions. Ironically, the two turn out to be a foil character for the other due to a substantial difference that reflects the message of the both series.
Eren is a boy who became a monster. He terrifies us and we are supposed to sympathy with him since he is a monster spawned by war. Instead, we feel pity for him at best, or disgust at worst; since Eren really used selfless reasons (ensuring a happy life for his friends) to carry out a selfish plan (imposing his vision of the world). In the end, he became an instrument of destiny and a slave to his freedom.
On the contrary, Lelouch is a monster who learned to be a man. We are afraid and we sympathy with Lelouch 'cause he imposed the punishment of death on himself so as not to allow himself to enjoy the new world with his loved ones and thus atone for all the atrocities he committed. Let's say that Lelouch used selfish reasons (punish himself) to carry out a selfless plan (save the world). Ultimately, he always acted on his own will, had control through Geass and political power, and abandoned all of that because it was the right thing to do.
In short, AOT has a darker tone while CG has a brighter tone. Two sides of the same coin. In any case, every ending must convince its audience on a narrative, discursive and emotional level and Code Geass checks all of these boxes. The resolution of Lelouch's arc is totally cathartic and the message that CG leaves is much more forceful and moving. This series taught me to value and find new angles on important themes like no other work had done, such as free will, the mask, individuality, the future, lies, human nature. I sorry that the Discussion Section never reflected on as they could have been.
Anyway, I thank K&M for sharing their Code Geass experience with us, as well as I thank everyone who took the time to read my extensive comments. It was a pleasure to see CG with you again :)

Ok, so about the movie. There are 4 movies. But they are not canon to the series. the first 3 are a retelling of the main series but with bunch of smaller and bigger changes. They did that so they could continue the story but at the same time not ruin the perfect ending here. The first 3 movies were never dubbed but the 4th one was. It is an original story set after Zero Requiem. It is called "Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;surrection" so... I think you can guess what happens in it. You can watch the 4th movie without watching the first 3. You just have to remember that the show and movie are not in the same continuity. The only change from the show to movies that is relevant to the 4th movie is that Shirley was never killed so she has a small cameo in the 4th movie. I personally think that the movie while not perfect is fun and it is worth checking out.

This is by far one of my favorite shows and I'm so glad I got to be here when you guys started it and saw it through to the end. There have been a couple other reactors I watch who dropped it because it just wasn't getting enough views to be worth it which I understand but it pains me when that happens as it is such a great experience. It was a blast seeing you both watch it and give your inputs, it does suck that the ending was kind of spoiled a bit by the AoT comparisons but in all fairness, I spoiled the ending of AoT for myself from having just guessed it was gonna be the same idea as the Zero Requiem, so I guess that's just the nature of watching both shows in either order. Thank you so much for sticking through with this amazing show to the end!

It goes full circle. In the beginning Lelouch always said: "those who chose to kill are those who should willing to be killed"
BTW: C.C. really did talk to Lelouch, since C.C. can communicate with those who pass on. Remember when Charles talking to Clovis in C's world on sword of akasha? Well for the Code bearer like C.C. and V.V. they can talk to those on C's world like C.C. did with Marian.

Would you guys consider resuming that series once you finish Chainsaw Man?
If you're concerned with the dub, by the time you wrap up Chainsaw Man, new DS episodes will start being dubbed, so you'll be able to watch it in English at your rate.

No Montana, Lelouch is not alive.
That was an incorrect interpretation that a portion of the fanbase had back when this episode aired.
The director had to come out and verify that Lelouch died. Even then, some of these fans refused to believe it, even refusing to hear it from the director himself.

Not exactly true. I'm not even going to talk about alternate universe filler movies created later. But you can watch an uncut japanese version of this ending (created waaay before the dubbing). Lelouch lives - he took the C-code from C.C. that's why Nunally saw the vision after touching Lelouch's hand (similar to the visions C.C. gave to non Geass users).
The reason the ending was cut was to give the viewers the chance to decide what ending they want. Cheers.

@@damianborkowski3060 You fell prey to the troll video which falsely claimed lelouch is the cart driver. That video is a fan made edit, it was never party of the show.
This is easily proven, the original Japanese broadcast is still online, go watch it and see with your own eyes that the cart driver was never Lelouch.
Also, we know from many MANY interviews that the only reason Code Geass exists is because the creators wanted to write a story where the main character does evil things and then dies at the end to redeem himself. The death of Lelouch was always the core of the anime and the reason it exists.
They even officially confirmed that Lelouch never had a code.
On the 2009 DVD C.C. herself even explicitly confirms that Lelouch is dead.

Jeramiah, C2, Suzaku, Lloyd, Cecile and Nina know what happened. That’s why those six didn’t need to be Geass’d yet still went along with a plan that would seem psychotic if you didn’t know the ending. Cecile even comments saying that she has no regrets ‘switching sides’ even though she’s now in prison. You also get a very respectful ‘Yes, Your Majesty’ when Lelouch tells them to abandon the Avalon and rescue the prisoners.
On the opposing side, Kallen and Nunally 100% understand what happened with Todoh and Ohgi being suspicious.
When it comes to the movie, Lelouch of the Resurection, the original creators made it because the theory of Lelouch still being alive was incredibly popular and people came up with plausible explanations. Basically, the community split into three camps:
1). Lelouch died and C2 was talking to his spirit that now dwells with C’s World
2). Lelouch died and C2 was just talking to herself, laughing that Lelouch defied the condition that Geass would result in solitude (Several people understood and still loved him after the Zero Requiem)
3). Lelouch was the driver of the cart that C2 was on. The theory was that since you obtain a Code by killing someone that has one and Lelouch killed Charles, he stole his Code. But as he didn’t trade it for his Geass from his contractor, he got to keep Geass and the Code, hence the name of the show being ‘Code Geass’.
The original creator made the movie based on that last theory but also said that viewers can choose what they want to believe in; do you like the original ending or the new one in the movie? Which ever one you prefer is canon.
I personally love the new ending and think that you should definitely give it a watch; if not for the channel then definitely for your own entertainment! However I perfectly understand those that choose the original ending.
If anyone read this far then congratulations and thank you for indulging my ramblings, have a cookie! 🍪

Love the ending, which is the common opinion. But i want to tack on it's also interesting because it's, for lack of a better word, messy.
We don't know what Lelouch did as Emperor, we never learned how Code works or where Geass comes from, we can guess Lelouch died but that's about it and even that isn't certain due to our lack of knowledge on Code and the World of C.
But it just FEELS right. And in the end that overshadows everything else.

Finally, the ending! I wanted to see your reactions and hear your thoughts and wasn't disappointed. It was so much fun rewatching this through your videos.
I was sad when I first saw the ending years ago. I fully wanted to believe in the theory of Lelouch being alive even though the anime staff had apparently been telling in interviews that he's truly dead. I had once fallen for that gif of the cart driver at the end being Lelouch but I looked it up and found out it was a fake edit. Several years later I watched a lot of other people's reaction videos to the finale and finally accepted Lelouch is dead and that he got his wish in the end with everyone happy (I agree that it feels too much like a perfect fairytale ending cause that doesn't got this well in real life. Funny thing is that several days later after I thought "Yep, Lelouch is really dead all this time." is when they announced the compilation movies and the third movie with an alternate ending called "Lelouch of the Resurrection" lol.
Yeah, others have explained but the third movie follows the retelling of the series through the first two movies so several things are different and you'd need to watch those two before the final movie.
Anyways, thanks for watching the series! I'm happy to see others enjoying a show I liked even if it had been years. I hope you guys watch other anime movies though (I heard you mention "A Silent Voice" and it'd be fun to hear your thoughts on that).
