What is the most obvious about the Quran is that it is from human intervention as a result of changes from time to time. The Hafs version of the Quran which is widely used by the Muslims in the world today was only issued in 1924 in Cairo which was sponsored by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia just after the fall of the Ottoman Empire in Turkey. The most important of the texual sources of Islamic beliefs is the Quran and second is the Hadith a collection of words and deeds of Muhammad and the third is the biography of Muhammad called the Sira. What the Hadiths tell us about the formation and compilation of the Quran is highly inconvenient. If Muslims pick up a copy of a Quran from any home around the world i doubt they will even find a difference between them.

Dr Sidky is a very eloquent and clear speaker. Great answers from him. His point about scribal errors not being hereditary is a very important point: it means that the errors of one scribe were not copied forward by another scribe. Thus, scribal mistakes were restricted to manuscripts. This is unlike the NT, where one scribe copied the mistakes (not in toto, of course) of another scribe. And on and on. What does this mean? It means that Quranic mss were not just copied from other mss in a vaccum. There was a parallel oral transmission which kept a check on the written transmission and restricted written variations.

@@BloggingTheology -The Prophet (pbuh) warned Muslims that "anyone who kills a non-Muslim citizen will not smell the fragrance of paradise" (Nasai). This indicates his high regard for Christians and Jews whom the Quran entitled “Ahlul-Kitab” (People of the Book) repeatedly and in clear words. This is precisely why the Prophet (pbuh) strongly admonished his followers about the mistreatment with them: He said, "He who wrongs a Jew or a Christian will have myself as his accuser on the Day of Judgment" (Bukhari).
Speaking generally about all non-Muslims living in an Islamic country, the Prophet said: "He who hurts a Dhimmi (non-Muslim citizen of an Islamic state) hurts me, and he who hurts me annoys Allah." (Reported by Imam Tabrani)
The Prophet also declared: "Whoever hurts a non-Muslim, I am his adversary, and I shall be an adversary to him on the Day of Rising." (Reported by Al Khateeb)
Another Hadith report quotes the Prophet (pbuh) as having said, "On the Day of Resurrection I shall dispute with anyone who oppresses a person from among the non-Muslims, or infringes on his right, or puts a responsibility on him which is beyond his capacity or takes something from him against his will." (Reported by Abu Dawood)
Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was very much concerned about the protection of the rights of Jews and Christians, as well as other Ahl al-Zimmah (non-Muslim citizens of Islamic state) and religious minorities of the state that he established. A substantial and irrefutable proof of this is that during his lifetime in Arabia, Christians were protected even against foreign invading enemies. The Prophet (pbuh) particularly stressed that religious institutions of other communities should not be harmed. Monasteries, churches and synagogues must be respected, because the Quran itself respects them as the places of worship for the People of the Book, protected by God (Al-Hajj 22: 40). In accordance with this divine commandment, the Prophet (pbuh) concerned himself with the protection of the holy places of the Ahlul-Kitab (People of the Book).
Once, a delegation from St. Catherine’s Monastery came to the Prophet (pbuh), requesting his protection. He granted them a charter of rights, which went down well in the Islamic history as the first written document for the protection of minority human rights and respect for their faiths. Here is the letter addressed by the Prophet (pbuh) to the religious leaders of Saint Catherine’s monastery on Mount Sinai who had sought the protection of the Muslims:
"This is a message from Muhammad ibn Abdullah, as a covenant to those who follow Christianity, near and far, we are with them (We stand by them). Verily I, the servants of God, the helpers, and my followers defend them, because Christians are my citizens; and by Allah! I hold out against anything that displeases them. No compulsion is to be on them. Neither are their judges to be removed from their jobs nor their monks from their monasteries. No one is to destroy a house of their religion, to damage it, or to carry anything from it to the Muslims' houses. Should anyone take any of these, he would spoil Allah’s covenant and disobey His Prophet. Verily, they (Christians) are my allies and have my secure charter against all that they hate. No one is to force them to travel or to oblige them to fight. The Muslims are to fight for them. If a female Christian is married to a Muslim, it is not to take place without her approval.(Marring a non-muslim is forbidden in Islam)) She is not to be prevented from visiting her church to pray. Their churches are to be respected. They are neither to be prevented from repairing them nor the sacredness of their covenants. None of Muslims is to disobey the covenant till the Last Day."
-From several ancient and modern rolls preserved in the monastery's library, it has been authenticated that the Covenant of the Prophet (pbuh) played great role in the protection of special privileges for the monks... The monastery was under the protection of the Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) himself and later under the Arab and Turkish leaders and Napoleon... This is precisely why it remains safe and intact even today. The historical Fatimid mosque built next to the Orthodox Church is still serving a glaring example of religious co-existence.
The Sinai holy sites, which have also been mentioned in the Qur’an, are of paramount historical importance and authenticity... According to the historical records preserved at Sinai, the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) not only knew but also visited the Sinai priests.. It is recorded that when the delegation from Sinai requested a letter of protection from the Prophet (pbuh) in 626 AD, he granted and authorized the covenant by placing his hand upon it.. According to numerous sources, the Turkish Sultan Saleem I (in AD 1517) took the original letter of protection for safekeeping to the royal treasury in Constantinople.. However, he confirmed the monastery’s prerogatives and granted certified copies of this document to the monastery, each depicting the hand print of the Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) in token of his having touched the original... This historical document of the Islam’s message of religious tolerance is still preserved in the Topkapi Museum in Istanbul..The original document in Arabic can still be seen..
One of the websites working under the project of UNESCO (the United Nations’ Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) states:
“The Letter of Protection is known as the Ahtiname, from the Arabic words ahd, which means “obligation,” and name, which means “document, testament.” The document has been instrumental in the protection of the monastery, and as a means of ensuring peaceful and cooperative relations between Christians and Muslims. . The continuous existence of the monastery during fourteen centuries of Islamic rule is a sign of the respect given to this Letter of Protection, and the principles of peace and cooperation that it is in Istanbul. So imagine. The christians are associating Jesus with Allah(the only God) sometimes by thinking that Jesus is God or the son of God.But Still Allah is kind upon them.So that they can come to the only right path(Islam). They should be ashamed that Allah is showing them kindness but they are associating Jesus with Allah. And the Hindus are praying infront of an idol.Shame!!And other religious are also associating someone with Allah.

@@kingofjudah6875this is the problem with u guys .getting some information from anti Islamic websites and putting forward those imbecile arguments to prove ur self right which is completely absurd .when will u guys learn .A large number of missionaries and self studies critics like u have been quoting Ismail tradition,or reports hadiths ,which support their claim stating the quaran was not written at the time of its revelation.this is a foolish claim and doesn’t make any sense .Reason the Quaran it self contains many passages which refer to it’s written form.three appear to be four chapters (Surah) of the Quran which refer to the Quaran’s written form explicitly.
By no means !indeed it is a message of instruction therefore, whoever wills ,should remember on leaves held in honor exalted, purified in the hands of scribes noble and pious .
      Surah’ 80:11-16
Here we have references to those scribes who wrote the Quaran on leaves. Minister Abdullah Yusuf Ali his commentary wrote that at the time of the of the revelation of this Surah forty -two or forty five others Surahs had been written and kept by Muslims in Makkah (out of the total Surah 114 chapters )
May this is the glorious quaran ,on a tablet preserved.surah 85:21-22
Above verse is the ultimate proof on the written preservation of it even before the migration of the holy prophet.
This is a glorious reading ,In a book well -kept ,Which none but the purified teach this is a revelation from the Lord o the worlds “
      Surah 56:77-80
They said : tales of the ancient which he had caused to be written and they are dictated to him morning and evening.22:5
      Evidence from Hadith
Besides the above verses which refer to the Quaran written form ,there are a also number of hadiths which agree with the above versus :
We used to complete the Quaran from small scraps in the presence of the messenger.(Hakim ,Mustadarak)
The above Hadith also tells us that the prophet Muhammad was not unaware of the condition of the Quaran with his companions and that he used to guide them while compiling it .Also it tells us that Quaran also used to be compiled for the prophet Muhammad (pbuh),meaning that he had personal copy .
Malik said that no one should carry the Mushaf by its strap ,not on a pillow ,unless he is clean ...(Mu’atta,Kitab Al -Nida’Li’L-Salam)
So it’s cleared from these hadiths that the Quaran was available in a book form at the time of the prophet Muhammad (Pbuh) so ur stupid arguments are still dispelled.this is what will happen to people who trying to attempt to berate Islam through anti Islamic websites .feel pity on u .
Narrated Qatadah:I asked Anas Ibnu Malik : who collected the Quaran at the time of the prophet ?He replied Four ,all of whom were from Ansar :Ubay Ibn Ka’ab,Mu’adh Ibn Jabal,Zayd Ibn Thabit and Abu zayd .(Bukhari ,Kitab Fada ‘ilu’l-Quaran)
It is very clear it was available in a book form at the time of the prophet with those undeniable evidence.
The Oral transmission of the Quaran
Even until today ,many people around the world completely memorized the Quaran by heart .these people are known as Hafizun, which mean protectors of the Quaran .The real protector is Allah ,lord of all being , why they’re called protectors ,even the book format is lost ,we can easily restore yet by them .because they have memorized it by heart .
Prophet had thousands of companion who completely memorized the Quaran.
The first man to speak the Quaran loudly after the prophet Abdullah bin Masud .and its pass down to others .
Abubakr recited the Publicity in front of his house (Sira Ibn Hisham)
Coming back to ur stupidity,Abu Baker was very close friend of prophet.he was also successor not in prophethood ,he became the commander of Muslims .During his time a battle took place know to be battle of Yamamah .in this battle many people had memorized the Quaran were martyred.so he feared that the Quaran might not be lost ,so he ordered Zayd Ibn Thabit ,the personal scribe of the prophet to compile it .Zayd finished it successfully.
It must be noted even if many companions who had memorized it were martyred, the complete Quaran in writing already existed .
Following Hadith mentioned the collection of the Quaran under the caliphate of Abu Bakr
Bukhari ,VI ,No .201 please check it out it’s a long one
The reason why he ordered because he feared the Quaran could have been lost .thats why he ordered for a copy to be prepared .
The collection under the Khalifah Uthman
After Abubakr ,Kalifha Umar ruled, then Uthman was elected as a Kalifah .During this period Islam has spread to many areas .The Muslims were not Arabs ,couldn’t read the Quaran as it should have been read .they changed the meanings of the verses, and many variant readings sprung out .because the people were ignorant of Arabic .Old Arabic was written as lines ,now one can distinguish such and such alphabet easily By marks .but this was not the case those times .Thats why Caliphate Uthman immediately told a committee of scribes to write the Quaran in the dialect of the Queresh (original Arabic revelation at the time of the prophet) because that how it was revealed. When the scribes has prepared many copies from one which Abu Bakr had compiled ,each Copy was sent to each city under Muslims rule .Other copies Which Uthman were BURNED .Then from the standard copies ,more copies were made and this time there were also teachers of the people to teach them how to recite it with the original pure Qureshi pronunciation.
      Evidence :Bukhari VI,No.510
      Reason for the burning
Stupid people like u and Christian missionaries have been openly making allegations that Uthman ordered all copies of the Quaran to be burnt because of the varying content .this is not true
Now suppose that there were at any time any variations in the Quaran other than those caused by scribal errors or failure of memory or due to some minor differences in script .that is ,suppose that some individuals or groups deliberately held onto a text of the Quaran that they knew was different from the one followed by others and that was country to country we find the same text of the Quaran?it is said that Uthman the third leader succeeding the prophet, ordered people to burn all the text of the Quaran which was different from certain text .but is it conceivable that people will submit to this order even if they thought Uthman’s text was not authentic text ?
You guys have natural tendency to think that Muslims rulers must have always been tyrant dictators who could force the people to do anything.this is certainly not true of early leaders of Muslims ..he ordered to remain Qureshi dialect of it which we have in our hand which is the purest form of it that revealed at the time of the prophet.
Go and read (Dr .Ahmad Shafaat,2000,”Journal of the Muslim research institute “Canada )
Some of the missionaries without proof proclaiming people didn’t like the act of burning .this is wrong proven by following:
Zaid is reported to have “I saw companions of Muhammad saying By Allah Uthman has done well “(Nisaburi)
Ibn Abi Dawud records Musab ibn Abi Waqas to have testified “ I saw the people assembled in a large number at Uthmans burning of the proscribed copies :not a one spoke against him “Ali commented “ if I were in a command in a place of Uthman I would have done the same (Zarkashi)
As per above references.all companions agreed the act of burning of the copies other than the standard one .because they memorized it with the pure form from the prophet and they know how it should be pronounced. So ur imbecile claim is dispelled .
Apart from this there is a mathematical coding of the Quaran which itself a miracle .experts say this could not have been come from a man due to the mathematical miracle it contains .
      Evidence
      ruclips.net/video/WwHUcth-zzU/видео.html
And the oldest Quaran found in Birmingham
      ruclips.net/video/jowQond7_UE/видео.html
So people like u will never ever Learn instead of criticizing just by searching anti Islamic websites 😂😂😂😂

Dear Brother, there are two point in want to clarify, especially that I am an Arab who studied the 7 Qiraat
    1. for Muslims, the oral transmission of the Quran was more important than the written one, the written one was an aid and went through a lot of evolution as the Arabic script continued to be improved until it toke the current shape. i.e. the dots of the letters, the Vowels (Tashkeel ) and all those were added to aid the non Arabs to read the Quran.
It is interesting thing to mention, when social media blocked tweets that support Palestinians during the last attack on Gaza, Arabs started writing without the dots in order to bypass the censorship on such tweets, a ordinary Arab can read not only without the Vowels (tashkeel) but without the dots on the letters as well.
The oral transmission not only kept the exact words, they also dealt with the accent of Arabic Quraish ( how would An Arab from Quraish pronounce such a word). That is what is called TAJWEED, this is why, when you listen to Quran, regardless of the reader from China or Morocco they will pronounce every minute sound with accent of Quraish.
Hafiz , a term giving to those who memorize the Quran, is not giving to anyone who pick up the Quran and memorize it, no, he has to be taught under another Hafiz.
To be a Hafiz, you have to memorize the Quran, recite from memory to a hafiz-teacher, whom scrutinize every single letter you utter, every time you take breath while reading, when you stop and when you contenu reading. if you pass this strict test, you are giving a certificate that lists your sheikh name with the pedigree of hafizes that goes up the the prophet , and the Qera that you are good at.
If you hold the Quran printed by Saudi Arabia, the Standard green Quran, if you look at the back, they won't list the manuscript they used to write the Quran, instead they will list the Hafiz pedigree whom were used to write that Quran, and pretty much in every single Quran you should find such a list.
2.Othmanic Quran dealt with more than standardizing the Arabic used to write the Quran, it actually involves more information, it tells you when you can stop, when you can not. When you should prostrate at certain Ayat, when you should elongate a world or a vowel. etc..
the Othmanic Quran was written before Arabic script used today toke it current shape, before Arabic grammar was established (and it's effect on spelling).
the Quran written in Othmanic script, does not match the Arabic language standard written form. As it was written before the establishment of such rules . There were a lot of non-standard practices used only in the Othmanic Quran. The goal was to make the Quran easier to read. Before a standard set of spelling rules were standardized
again, if you look at the back of the Quran if you have the standard Saudi green Quran, you will find a guide to how to read the Uthmanic script. it will tell you the practices they used to save on paper. to denotes accent while reading. And such things.
so the standardization of the Quranic script was not a conspiracy to hide *differences* in Quran or better Qeraat than others. it was just a way to preserve the written manuscript as an aid to the oral tradition.
    Thank you.

Just to make it simple, Qirat, Ahruf, refer to a single issue, dialects.
Arabic tribe dialects that involves different word (happened 3 times in the Quran) or different pronunciation to the same word (pronunciation in here means vowels), however rarely it would result in a change of meaning, usually it is a very, very close meaning.
To give you an example, the word Malik and Malek discussed in this video, in Arabic they come from the same root, for Arabic speakers it does not reflect a huge change in meaning as it would when translated to English (king vs Owner), notice that King and owner in Arabic is (Mlek, Malek).

Subhanallah, The more Quranic manuscripts are discovered, the more our researchers and specialists rejoice. On the other hand, the Christian world fears the discovery of new manuscripts older than the Sinaticus and Vaticanus. This would expose the intentional additions made by scribes, for theological reasons...I am thinking of passages that are being debated even today, such as Matthew 28:19.for example.

Paul, the question you should ask, is whether there are variants with totally different roots.
All the variants mentioned here were just due to different diacritical marks on the same consonant skeleton.

I think he gave one example, but others would be for example ʿibādu / ʿinda (slaves / with) in 43:19 or fa-tabayyanu / fa-tathabbatu (investigate/ascertain) in Q4.94. This is due to differences in consonantal dotting giving different root words, but they fit the same undotted rasm (a requirement for canonical readings).

And when you inspect those manuscripts with that geographical social context its very clear that those palimpsests were student educational material, perhaps for practice, so thr variation in Surah Order is explained because they werent transcribing codices meant for circulation. @@matthewpaulson6497 Why didnt the Torah get memorised? Maybe you should put that question to the Jews. The commitment to memory of the text goes to show how seriously the early muslims took revelation to be. It was decided to commit the Quran to a text form when many ‘Hafidhs’ (those who memorised the Quran completely) died in the battles against the Byzantine and Persian empires. Yet although the text is in written form, even to this day there are several million muslims that have committed the text to memory. Such that if you destroyed every copy of the Quran you could compile it again with complete accuracy within an hour (say using 30 memorisers each dictating a 1/30 part each). The memorisation of the text has been continuous and uninterrupted from the time it was revealed. The written format is for the wider public who may or may not have memorised the text either partially or in its entirety. No other religion on the planet has taken their scriptural text and its preservation as seriously as the muslims have done. Indeed if you really believe you are given the word of God why would you not hold it in the importance it deserves?

let alone the difference of the writing from earlier years of Islam because , AFAIK, the dot and "reading-instruction" is added in umayyah era.

A very interesting discussion indeed. Dr. Sidky's argument on the non-hereditary nature of the text of the Quran is probably the most important point in the discussion as it opposes the notion that mistakes are copied from scribe to scribe (just as Dr. Bart Ehrman would claim occurred in the new testament). This could only be accomplished if the scribes had an ancient complete unaltered copy to compare the later compies with and correct the later mistakes (Basically the argument Ehrman was making in his debate with James White in respect to the new testament) or if the scribes have indeed memorized the Quran in their respective qiraat in order to account for the error made by other scribes. This feat would have been impossible for the new testament scribes especially since the canonization of the text was very late for the new testament, thus we see numerous alterations in the new testament text (A must read: The orthodox corruption of scripture by Ehrman).
    As usual great discussion!

    • @johnbrzykcy3076

    • @philosophicaltheology5129
      @philosophicaltheology5129 3 года назад +1

@@johnbrzykcy3076 First of all, when Mark was already written down, the authors of Mathew and Luke had access to some earlier scripts such as L, M, and Q, as well as Mark and they, picked and merged some of the info to form their own gospel. Now the scribes that copied, for instance, Mathew, made some mistakes, and then scribes that copied from the previous scribes probably made the same mistakes and added their own mistakes (You shouldn't underestimate the number of mistakes that could possibly be made when writing ancient greek letters side by side. I will not be dealing with forced anti-adoptionist changes such as Luke 3:22 or 9:35 for the sake of time). The earlier copies were either thrown away or confiscated by Roman authorities and so there is basically nothing to measure the tenacity of the later copies. Now since the bible does not have an oral transmission (unlike the Quran), not having the earlier copies implies losing the originals. When writing his book "the orthodox corruption of scripture", Bart still believed that the originals were at hand. Now, most new testament critics, including Bart, are not convinced that the originals can even possibly be construced. This is partly because of the problem of the hereditary nature of the bible as well as the little number of manuscripts present in the first 100 years. (For instance, P52 was dated to about c.110 earlier but now it pushed to about c.180. P90 and P104 are both second-century manuscripts). So yeah, it is a completely different beast we are dealing with when we look at the new testament.

Think about the different dialects of english and "regional" spelling differences. The book and written form may have some typos and etc. Back then they didn't have ctrl+f, they didn't have computers... It does not harm the protection of the Quran because for 1500 years it is "MEMORISED" completely. How can't you understand this ? How old are you ? It is simple as that. Awesome work - thank you so much to Mr WIlliams and Dr Sidky for producing this revelatory talk.
Its been such a major query in the muslim pubic domain for so long - where are all documents of the Prophet's era when the Qur'an testifies to its Own meticulous written recording, and to record contracts?! And why would they all have all been willfully destroyed?
15:9 "We have, without doubt, sent down the Message; and We will assuredly GUARD IT(from corruption."
And remarkably, even the Prophet Muhammad's opponents would bear witness.. 25:5 "They said: Tales of the ancients which he has CAUSED TO BE WRITTEN and they are DICTATED TO HIM MORNING AND EVENING"
56:77-80 "This is a glorious reading , In A BOOK well kept Which none but the purified teach.
This is a Revelation from the Lord of the Worlds."
80:11-16"By no means! Indeed it is a message of instruction, Therefore whoever wills, should remember
On LEAVES held in honor, Exalted, purified, IN THE HANDS OF SCRIBES, NOBLE AND PIOUS."
96:3-5 "Recite, and your Lord/God is the most Generous, Who taught by the PEN, Taught man that which he knew not." 98:2-3 "An (apostle) from God recites leaves, Kept pure where are decrees right and straight."

May Allah bless you and guide us all to the ultimate truth that Quran, as we have it today, is the message of Allah. One thing about the Othmanic Quran is that each verse to be included must be corroborated by a team of companions with an absolute minimum of two. However, the versions that belonged to single companions were kind of personal writing and contained both Quran script and Tafseers (interpretation of meanings). I hope that professor Sidkhy can comment on this difference (متواتر وغير متواتر).

In the Maghreb, any one know, even lay people, that we read quran in warsh. Everyone also know that there are different way of reading but these do not make any difference to the specific and meaning of the message. Example: we read ahinakom (warsh) instead of a'innakom (hafs) OR youminoon (warsh) instead of you'e'minoon (hafs).
Yaati ( ياتي) and ya"e'ti (يأتي)
Taaweelaho ( تاويله) and ta'e"weelaho (تاويله)
الذين يؤمنون vs الذين يومنون . Here, we have و without hamza
    Maalik and malik.
Note for an arab, there is no issue between reading maalik and malik because Allah is the supreme king and everything belong to Allah.

There’s seven general differences between the different qira’at
      1. Dialectical differences (vast majority)
      2. Consonantly structure remains the same but the vowelisation differs
      3. Substitution on synonyms
      4. Differences in grammatical indicators
      5. Omission of certain harf words
      6. Differences in word ordering of certain listed points mentioned in the Quran.
      7. Differences in the consonants but the consonantal structure remains the same.
Of the 2-7 differences they represent 0.9% of the differences between the different Qiraat.

Great content Paul as always. Thank you. Very informative session with Hythem, very learned.
A couple of points in my humble opinion :
    1. Any variant reading using synonyms or addition /subtraction of words without changing any meaning has to be explained by the 7 ahruf or wordings. There are some ahadith that mentions disputes among the companions regarding a certain recitation and them resolving it by consulting the Prophet without any authority for the companions. There are a few of these recorded and then the hadith about Qur'an being revealed in 7 ahruf is the criteria.
Qur'an was recited publicly by the Prophet in 3 loud prayers daily. He (pbuh) led the congregational prayers including 4 times on Fridays. This is all seperate from scribe recording and sermons.
Differences did arose that prompted the standardization of the text to the original style of the Qureshi dialect essentially losing the variances as much as possible with small reading variances still left that can be accommodated in the consonant skeleton. Still a very big subject.
    2. Second point is around the lack of public knowledge. Now a days scholars will explain that is all there and been known which is true but cannot be denied that the layperson 97% have been told by these scholars that every word is the same including dotting or nukt system and that is not true as is they have some thing to hide and when the layperson learn about it from orientalist (obviously the orientalists or apologists have their twisted version that puts lies in to it), then they start to doubt.
So the scholarship today is controversial just as they were at the time of Prophet Jesus the so called phareses who used to control and keep things though this issue is no controversy but has been made due to not bringing it to people voluntarily.

It is the only book in entire human history which is entirely memoizable and is memorized not only by specialists but also by ordinary believers. Which other books has ever been in entire human history which had this much rhetoric, poetical style and high memorability? Muslims do not take out their Bibles or Scrolls to read from it, we memorize and recite from memory during worship. There is NO book like Quran in this aspect. +

Assalamualaikum, I think you are stereotyping muslims. For muslims, the oral transmission of the Qur'an was more important than the written one, the written one was an aid and went through a lot of evolution as the Arabic script continued to be improved until it took the current shape. i. e the dots of the letters, the vowels (the tashkeel) and all those were added to aid the non Arabs to read the Qur'an. This is what someone said. We only have different way of recitation of the Qur'an. So, the Qur'an is indeed perfectly preserved. The literal meaning of "harf" is changing direction or edge and in the context of sound it means altering a sound. The written alphabet or abjad which in English are called letters were called "rasim" or "khat" رسم او خط which means drawing or sketching. It is only recently that letters were more commonly are referred to as"harf". As a child I learned all about the various recitations before I was ten.
