Otaku Chan Clearly you dont understand what I am saying. The MACHINE has a max wind speed of 157 MPH. Irma is much stronger than that, so no lab equipment can accurately simulate Irma's wind speeds.
TheOldOne , very true! Best to leave after one takes the family, pets, precious must haves, passports etc....and rebuild after insurance claim goes through!
TheOldOne He was talking about the model house I think, not real houses in a hurricane. That's why he said that they should make real houses out of whatever they made the model house from.
No, people could die. It actually happened before, and its not as strong as this. Just because you all brave doesnt mean its okay to do something stupid.
Joshua Villagomez it truly depends on where you are, and your area’s natural geography. We chose not to evacuate during Dorian, and we were absolutely fine. The evac order was called off mid-afternoon Wednesday, storm surge is a lot more dependent on the continental shelf and how close it cuts to land. Where I live, we have a very steep shelf, which makes for a permanent ripcurrent and great waves for any kind of boarding year-round, but that shelf also reduces storm surge on the land. If you’re in the Carolinas for instance, they have a very shallow continental shelf and you walk a long way out before the ocean will get deep, which creates more problems for inland flooding with storm surge when a hurricane hits. ...I was glued to the National Hurricane Center Facebook Lives during Dorian and was learning a lot about storm surge and what can cause lower and higher storm surge, and flooding. The NHC’s Facebook is great bc they leave the lives up, and they’ll talk to different people in the center who are experts on different things. The storm surge guy was really helpful. www.nhc.noaa.gov/surge/#IMPACT My town’s last big strike was Irma, the locals here (we moved down 2 years ago) say it’s very rare that any hurricane actually does any major damage, so a lot of people will stay bc the odds are typically very high in our favor. My family follows the example of our next door neighbors... when they pack up and leave, it’s time to get out, and they’ve been here 20 years and only evacuated once, which they regretted. That’s just us, and that’s my town. I am highly in favor of others evacuating, but now I have a much better understanding of why people here aren’t bothered about evacuating. Just my personal experience. I’d still rather deal with a major snowstorm in Massachusetts (where we moved down from), than a Florida hurricane. My nerves were frayed until Dorian passed.
Benn Garrland yeah I heard Dorian would have technically fit as a Cat 6 except there is no Cat 6, and that 220mph reading was unofficial but it was recorded. Hurricane Hunters are maniacs and total heroes I swear🌀✈️
I live about 20 minutes from New Orleans and I can tell you that a Hurricane sounds just like a freight train and sometimes can hear a nearby transformer exploding. Really is a terrifying experience.
This is a simulation. There is actually a lot of calculation put into designing simulations like these. Although the speeds are different, this small scale model can get pretty close to real conditions, even if the wind speeds are not the same. The key comes in fluid dynamics; engineers use parameters like the Reynold's number, and by modifying the properties of the air like pressure and temperature, they can predict what 200 mph winds can do by using only 150 mph wind.
Florida has always been a hurricane target, that's why this facility was built in the first place, cause they're expecting a big storm. This is literally the opposite of ironic.
Woah it's amazing how scientist can figure out how hurricanes are formed and when it's going to happen. This lets people know how dangerous it can be and how strong.
Wen I was 11, me and my mom were visiting my grandparents in Palm Beach Florida. That was the summer hurricane Katrina and we got stuck in it. It was horrifying.
The waves washing around the model house are not really a representation of a hurricane storm surge. It's actually a general rise in water level, which can get up to 20 feet in extreme situations. Wind-driven waves are atop the surface of the surge, which doesn't recede each time a wave breaks but just stays high for hours.

If you don't know how much gas you put in a car you don't know how fast it'll go? Erm, this fails me.. the amount of petrol doesn't affect speed. if anything it'll go faster with less petrol because the weight of the car is lower... I'm so lost with this logic...

So ummm, 7 years later and it’s considered a conspiracy theory that this, allegedly happened in the Gulf of Mexico during an election year near one of the reddest states in the US. Weird..
Now Miami won't need a simulation to see what a cat 5 is like
Even Katrina was a 5.
Katrina was a category 1 when it made landfall in Florida and a 3 in Louisiana/Mississippi. It was a 5 in the Gulf only.
Zayne Hulvey It'll be a four once it gets here.
Zayne Hulvey we've had cat fives before
It's officially a category 6 now
Imagine accidentally dropping a rock in there and then have it fling through the glass and have 40,000 gallons of water spilling out
you can’t. that’s impossible.

Not spilling out, but being blasted out at 150mph ;)

Surfs up!
BEST safe pool ever.
Im thinking the same looks fun.
"Can generate an extreme Category 5" "Top wind speeds of 157 MPH"
Well Irma is at 185 MPH sustained winds sooooooooooo
Chris Marsden Category 5 hurricanes can go far beyond 157, it just that is the minimum to be categorized at 5.
Otaku Chan Clearly you dont understand what I am saying. The MACHINE has a max wind speed of 157 MPH. Irma is much stronger than that, so no lab equipment can accurately simulate Irma's wind speeds.
Chris Marsden oh ok sorry
185mph at 300m* above seal level. So not 185 on ground
Actually 125 mph you're way off buddy. www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/MIAPWSAT1+shtml/062055.shtml?
Is it me or does that guy look like he's had no sleep for a week
He's a director of a lab, that's part of the job
Harry Quedenfeld i don't think not sleeping was in his contract, or that he doesn't have enough off hours to sleep so wtf are you on about

Isn't it ironic that Miami will be hit by a hurricane in a few days...
Warhorse26 yes
How is it Ironic?
because the hurricane simulator in located in Miami, which will be hit by Hurricane Irma...
They have made a breakthrough and the Government has used HAARP to send a hurricane toward Miami to test their theory. Its so obvious.
I would never joke about something this serious.
the guy looks like tony hawk
gasmask612 I was gonna say that lol

i ain't the religious type but i hope that everyone there can get out in time or finds somewhere safe to hide
It's at 185 mph now lmao

Woah it's amazing how scientist can figure out how hurricanes are formed and when it's going to happen. This lets people know how dangerous it can be and how strong.

It sounds like a valid idea but there's so much more factors that go into this.
That tank is going to get destroyed with Irma

I giggled at that myself.
He was using _gasoline_ as a metaphor for the heat in the ocean. He was also using _engine_ as a metaphor for hurricane.

Elisabeth Thomas there is no cat 6. It's like the heavyweight division, after 157mph its cat 5.
Elisabeth Thomas only 5 of them like you said are you blond
So far. On earth cat 5 is the max. But many people think that a cat 6 hurricane wil be possible in about the year 2100.
