- Taking a look at two great side-scrolling beat'em ups to find out which one is the better game. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles is on the SNES while The Hyperstone Heist is on the Sega Genesis. Both were developed by Konami and released in 1992.

The first Ninja Turtles NES game added soo much stress to my life when I was a kid. Anyone else?
Stress from a game as a kid? You know nothing of stress.
What does that even mean??
You had to go back to the start when you die. It was punishing
It was a hard game especially for ....7 year olds. Was it 1991 it came out? Anyway maybe 8 years old but difficult. I see James and Mike still have a hard time
The swimming level.
These are both tremendous games, I think, most are going to favor Turtles in Time and rightly so its more like the arcade version and is the namesake. But Hyperstone Heist is it's own experience and SEGA diehards that were Turtles fans hold it closer to their hearts. The more more difficult debate I think would be between the opposing tournament fighter games. Those are so completely different and I can't decide which I like better.
I just got done playing Hyperstone Heist. I was one stage away from shredding the Shredder. Great game that stands its own against Turtles in Time, one of my all-time favorite SNES games.
I've always appreciated that the games were different. Since I had an Snes and my buddy a Genesis, it gave some variety on sleep over weekends.
I liked Hyperstone Heist better due to better soundtrack rendition (IMO).
AS somebody who grew up with a Genesis and not a SNES, as someone who loved the Turtles and owned Hyperstone Heist as a kid, Turtles in Time is way better. Hell, I'd even say that the SNES Turtles in Time is better than the arcade because of the additional and expanded content, although with the arcade obviously having better graphics, sound, and 4 player capabilities, it's close.
Yeah the snes version is easier and slower, the Genesis is too fast
@@StaticTV80 The Genesis game plays fine, it's just a slog. There's only 4 levels and they are very long levels, and the last level is just a boss rush. The best and only unique thing in the game is they have a Tatsu boss fight, I don't think he's in any other game, and it's nice to see something from the movies.
Both games are awesome and among my top 10 favorites for both systems. I have a lot of nostalgia for the Hyperstone Heist as I rented that one a lot from Blockbuster back in the day and eventually bought it and then finally beat it, but I have to give a slight edge to Turtles in Time as it feels a little bit balanced as far as gameplay and controls go and is slightly more addicting, even though the Slash turtle always gives me trouble.
Turtles in Time was the BEST! Great review, I'd never seen them compared side-by-side like that!
SNES came out 2 years after Genesis. The fact there's even a debate in graphics makes the Genesis that much more impressive
Nya Stclair I agree.
who cares?
Nah
@@dannym6207 Exactly, who cares about graphics. Both games are awesome but I always wondered why konami fucked genesis owners over. Why didn't we get Turtles in Time??? The one thing that kicked ass about hyperstone was the Tatsu fight.
@YTCensorsMe Poop Yeah, that actually makes a lot of sense. I'm just wondering why Konami decided to "cheat" the genesis owners like this. I mean, an entire stage is like dedicated to a bunch of boss fights we have already fought. It was such a waste of time. So much potential wasted.
Sometimes I feel bad why nobody talks about konami's TMNT ( 2003 ) & TMNT battle nexus, I love both of them & both are couch co-op
I feel that Turtles in Time's 6th stage boss, Slash, represents too much of a difficulty spike. I like Turtles in Time equally as Hyper Stone Heist, but I just wanted to note that.
I also REALLY appreciate the dash button. I dunno how useful it was for you since the gens has a garbage tier controller, but using a modern controller on an emulator, it's awesome.
Ha ha the snes version is easy and slower
Both are really great games. I prefer the Genesis version, as a owner of both systems, I always hated the sample sound of the Snes. Turtles in time, had the mode 7, really that's where the Snes, excelled at.
First off, I love the video!!!! Actually just found your profile and I love your Videos!!! Okay, now, back in the day I had a Genesis and my neighbor had and SNES. Back in the day, this was the best combo. We spend so much time at each others 2 player machine with this game. Hyperstone Heist at first seemed worse, but in time it seemed better to both me and my neighbor. The Genesis version just seemed to be smoother and faster. It also seemed the turtles had different performance (speed, attack, etc.) in Hyperstone Heist. Too me Genesis wins in overall playability, SNES wins in presentation with exclusion to the frames and animation being a bit better on the Genesis.
Oh man I spent hours playing Turtles in Time. Just hearing it bring back so many memories.
For TMNT i will remember that in Arcade i played it as a kid in 1994 and we got to the end and we did not have coins but was my birthday so the owner gave it an acceptation and pass some few to finished it along with my brother was a wonderful tag team and again we did it on the Sega Genesis in 97.
Hyperstone was great but turtles in time was epic
I had an argument with a guy 12 years ago about which of these two was the better game. I guess I should track him down and show him this video.
Slash was the bane of my existence as a kid!
Just discovered Hyperstone Crisis & Turtles in time. Great games. I guess I grew out of the turtles just before they came out... So when I was a kid I focused on other games. Who new I missed such great games? Playing them now and really enjoying them... Takes me back.
I still have my hyper stone heist lol
I never knew Hyperstone Heist existed until the TMNT Cowabunga Collection. Me the only difficult level to get pass was the Gauntlet where you had to defeat all enemies in prior levels.
I love both of these, great to run thru with a buddy over lunchtime at work. I don't mind the SNES vs Genesis differences, they both have their charm and neither are the arcade game :P
As a Genesis owner I have to grudgingly admit the SNES version is superior in almost every way. I prefer the faster gameplay on the Genesis, but the level variety, sound, and ability to throw characters at the screen all make Turtles in Time the 16-bit version to own.
Throwing characters at the screen is very much missed on the Genesis version.
+Cannot be Tamed the control scheme on Genesis is not as good either. It only caters to the 3 button controller and not the 6-button. Did you know that beating Turtles in Time on the Hardest difficulty gets u the ending from the Turtles in Time Arcade game? Not really a huge bonus but worth it
+Derron Browning I did not know that! Pretty cool.
hunter371 its a challenge as on the hardest difficulty, you start off with fewer lives and the AI is tougher.
I learned of this after beating the Turtles in Time Arcade game recently. That"s why on the console versions if u beat it on default or lesser difficulty, Splinter will challenge u at the end to beat it on a harder difficulty
Hey it doesn’t matter which is best.....its turtles!
Turtles in time clearly is the better game in all categories, but Hyperstone Heist isn't bad either.
That's a very fare shack down of both games and I really liked you balanced perspective about what or breaks each one if these two games as they are compared to each other, ty for the interesting review and keep up the good work.
Love both, but as is sometimes the case the megadrive game handles better. The fighting is faster and feels more smooth in HH.
But the game is easier overall, specially due to that, but mainly due to the AI taking too much time to attack.
Forced to run with button push ruins the gamplay for me on the genesis.
2 x forward feels so much natural and works way better, especially for people that grow up with SNK 2D Fighters that supported Dash & Run.
The Buttons on the Genesis Pad got to much distance, there is no good solution.
Even when you change it like:
A Jumps, B Dash, C Attack...........now the gap is small, but theres a long distance between Jump and Attack.
All this slow down fast players like me.
U mean Sega mega drive
REALSlutHunter try playing it on an emulator. I’ve played Hyperstone Heist on a genesis emulator with a SNES controller and you’ll love button dash. I found turtles in time to be a fun game but the combat wasn’t as crisp as HH. I can pull off any move and have total control of my mobility in HH whereas in TIT I found myself inadvertently running and getting out of position far too often thanks to the auto dash when holding the dpad.
The snes version is easy & slow ha ha
Hyperstone best gameplay and faster, but very short
Tucan Estudios It actually isn't short. It just feels shorter. While Hyperstone Heist has 5 levels, as opposed to 10 in Turtles In Time, the levels in HH are MUCH longer with 4 of the 5 levels consisting of 3 sections each. In reality both games takes just about the same time to beat.
hossain shahriar No it isn't. The SNES version of Turtles in time has less frames of animation and less detail on the characters. Hyperstone Heist definitely plays, looks, and moves smoother.
I don't think so. Looks short because HH have less stages, but it's divided in sub-stages. TiT isn't much longer.
@Enan63 yea dude its generally agreed upon that Turtles in time while a better game does not play anywere near as smooth as hyperstone heist. Time lacks a burst run option that Heist has, this alone makes controlling your turtle way easier.
It be comes a really nice habit to watch you show every day 😁👍🏻
I absolutely love turtles in time and hyperstone heist. I love how they are similar yet have small differences. I think that the idea of one being better than the other is really down to opinion. Each game brings something to the table the other doesn’t have. ToT has better audio and mode 7, Sega has a exclusive level with an awesome song.
A lot of people don’t know this but while the SNES had slightly better graphics than the Sega genesis the Sega was a faster system, which is why games like Sonic could have the characters zip around the stage super fast; meanwhile in Super Mario World it’s a slower game than even Super Mario 3 for the NES.
Accidental ASMR occurred to me during this video
It's weird that Konami started making those TMNT games starting with a sequel.
Well, I have owned Turtles in Time for a long time and love it. I just got Hyperstone Heist, and I also enjoy it. When it comes to music, graphics, and gameplay I give Turtles in Time 1st prize, but Hyperstone Heist is a close second. Both great games, and every gamer should have both. Long live the SNES and Genesis!
Neon Night Riders is my favorite stage from TMNT 4 Turtles in Time and my favorite song.
It's one of my favourite levels too
I wished the arcade version was released for Sega CD but I had to settle for the snes port.
TMNT TURTLES IN TIME FOR SNES AND HYPERSTONE HEIST ROCKS SO MUCH !!!
People stop comparing and competing hyper stone heist with turtles in time. It's just not fair. That's like trying to make Mary Kate and Ashley compete to who's better.
I often found/find it odd how the Foot soldiers protect their stomachs as if they are human when attacked, anyone else see it too??
Sammy Lane maybe there was confusion as to if they were human.cartoon and games robots live action movies they are human.
Explosive Diareahh. Who knows what Shredder and Krang feeds them.
@@kevynhansyn2902 something explosive because they explode when defeated.
I remember watching your channel you really have come a long way 90K now
I was mostly a Sega kid growing up, but I agree that Turtles in Time was the better game for all the reasons you pointed out. I was also a big fan of Konami during the 16-bit era, and find this comparison really fascinating. I'd be interested in seeing your thoughts comparing Contra III: The Alien Wars with Contra: Hard Corps (which I feel is the better game), and Super Castlevania IV vs. Castlevania: Bloodlines (which is actually my favorite Castlevania, largely due to the awesome and woefully underappreciated soundtrack).
Both Tmnt Games Turtles In Time And Hyperstone Heist Are Both Awesome Games I Like Both Games I Played Them Both And They Are Good Games I Still Play Them Both
Hell ya nice to see a video made by people my age that can appreciate these amazing games! I love this video! Us kids that grew up in the 90’s (so born in the 80’s) need to band together haha.
Turtles in time is one of my all time favorites I never got a chance to play hyperstone tho I'm sure I would have loved it too
Nice, but I prefer the soundtrack on Genesis , more clear, vibrant, and close to arcade
Turtles in time definitely the better one,the hyperstone heist is is a good game for sega
Wow,this takes me to memory lane, miss these games
Cool video, yeah Turtles in time is the superior game to Hyperstone Heist which feels like a bootleg Turtles in Time but it's not bad I suppose. Btw regarding the control element, actually in turtles in time there is a control option to have 3 buttons via the configuration options. You can have the special move as A so you have 3 buttons to use, Y for attack, B for jumping and A for youe special move. They give you a few different options.
Amazing video. Both are classic to me. I loved the Sega when I was younger though.
Congratulations on the video!
I remember playing turtles in time with my older brothers when I was like 3 oh good times and great review I'm glad I found your channel today definitely earned my sub.
+Melendr3z Thanks!
Great review, Pam! I, too, have always liked Turtles in Time better of the two. I have started playing the arcade game more as well, and by and large, I actually prefer the SNES boss fights in many cases.
I remember as a kid, me and my friend Eian would literally use all our game tokens on the Turtles game. We'd be given a few dollars or whatever, and we'd run to the token change machine (remember those?) and we'd literally just play the one game. Even his mother just sort of commented about whether we were gonna play anything else in the arcade....nope. lol
I'd put all of my quarters into the Jurassic Park light gun game.
I like the SEGA Megadrive better because you can manually run which is cooler!
"he beat me in points, but i got back at him by eating all the pizza"
what the fuck. he killed everyone and you stole the health? not cool
Having played both games again recently with emus, I prefer the Hyperstone Heist. While less challenging and maybe shorter, the Hyperstone Heist felt more refined in gameplay, graphics aren't looked as washed out, and sound effect is way better. I find myself having more fun with Hyperstone Heist than Turtles in Time.
Actually HsH is more harder because the enemies are more aggressive.
Pretty much agreed on all points, and your analysis/description was put together very well. Subbed!
Thanks!
I have Turtles in Time; it's great
Saw that "Heist" features Tatsu, who is an interesting choice
Nice video, and totally agree. I much prefer SNES Turtles. The soundtrack alone makes it better in my eyes. I always had an issue getting in to Sega as much as Nintendo, due to the music quality. But both are worth a play, especially on coop
I like the Genesis game better just because it is it's own game exclusive to the Genesis and wasn't an arcade port, and the gameplay is better and faster. Snes might look and sound a bit better but it came out well after the Genesis version, so they could easily improve in those areas and they really didn't shine much compared to the competition. The turtles themselves look better on the Genesis game though. Sega wins this one for me, although I do like both of them alot.
Hyperstone Heist did not come out before Turtles in Time (SNES). Not in any region.
They've got their advantages. Turtles in Time lets you throw enemies at the screen, never seem to be able to do that in Hyper Stone Heist. This IS important to the gameplay, because slamming enemies back and forth is superior functionally, but offers less points (throwing enemies at the screen nets you 3 points in Turtles in Time).
Points lead to lives, so there's an element of strategy in Turtles in Time not present in Hyper Stone Heist.
Bosses have more personality to them gameplay wise in Turtles in Time, bosses like Shredder in the background, tricking Toka and Razar into attacking each other, ect.
Hyperstone Heist has one BIG advantage though: Dash button.
I love Turtles in Time but think Hyperstone Heist has a good soundtrack that shows what Genesis was capable of m
I will take my longer stages on Genesis over Vs Mode and Time Trial thank you thought for the review.
Turtles in time animation is too stiffed hyperstone heist animation was perfectly done
👍
To be honest I liked them both equally. I had an SNES growing up, but didn't have Turtles in Time so I missed out on both games until much later in life so my only experience with it was at an arcade. Basically they're both solid games to play if you're playing games from one console or the other today. If I had to choose, it would be the SNES game. On two games that are so closely related like this where most things are on par between the two, sound is often the deciding factor for me. Rather than catering specifically to the Genesis sound chip (some Genesis games do sound better than their SNES counterparts), they ported it over and while the results were really good, the Genesis sound chip just wasn't made for it.
These tmnt games are very good I still play time after time over the years
I prefer the music of the Sega version for sure. The Genesis had a lot of games with fantastic music!
I can agree that Turtles in Time was better than Hyperstone Heist, even though, I can say that HH was slightly more fun to play. The biggest advantage T.I.T. had over HH was that you can throw enemies off the screen. One fun fact: Hyperstone Heist had Master Tatsu from the first TMNT live action film. Turtles in Time on the other hand, had Tokka and Rahzar from Secret of the Ooze. Just subbed.
KT Johnson I really like throwing enemies offscreen in Turtles in Time, and enjoy the Shredder fight where they made that the way to defeat him.
Nice review Pan. I still have my copy of Hyperstone Heist, had since 1994
The Run button in Hyperstone made it a better playing game 👍
So excited you did this game! :D I loved this game as a kid.
TMNT 4 on SNES is easily the best Turtles games ever made. EASILY.
Amen
And it's the easiest and slowest
I grew up with the Genesis and had Hyperstone Heist but I definitely enjoyed Turtles in Time more.
Hyperstone is faster she said so it had BLAST PROCESSING
I like the Genesis version because is faster. But I admit, is more easy than SNES version.
Of the two home ports I preferred the Hyperstone Heist. I liked how it switched story up a bit, looked better, and the gameplay felt faster and tighter than TMNT 4.
Looking forward to Shredder's Revenge this year. Will be a nice throwback to this style of gameplay. The same developer already did a home run with Streets of Rage 4 last year.
Turtle Power!!
awww, petting hyperstone heist is a wonderful way to appreciate it.
how about reviewing maximum carnage (snes) VS separation anxiety (genesis) both are
spiderman games.
Turtles in Time has an option that changes the player characters' colors which I find adds a bit to its graphical appeal. Nice review :)
+David Gibson Thanks!
You can change the turtles appearance on Genesis too.
I really enjoyed turtles in time on both arcade and snes versions . Hyperstone heist is good too but needs improvement
Your vids are so good!! Great choice of games everytime. Keep it up
Dude what the hell is up with your avatar
Xorrak memories. U like?
Xorrak cutie wasn't he?
Strangled corpse, yeah cute man
Xorrak well he is a good kisser and that's what's most important to me.
Teenage mutant ninja turtles four turtles in time is one of the greatest games on the super Nintendo entertainment system priceless.
nice always cool to see a game vs game style review. snes had a ton of control options in the menu's aswell to change things up. both are good games, good replay value with the coop and the difficulty options, least on the snes. im not really sure about the gen version as ive never owned it.
Really enjoyed this review. And if you intended to inspire jealousy with your glassware, then mission accomplished!
I own both games, they make a great little 2 game marathon (or if you have MAME, you can play the 2 arcades on that to lengthen the marathon, or throw in TMNT 3 NES to add even more length). Both games are good in their own way, though I felt Konami copped out on the Genesis version by adding a boss rush of bosses you've already beaten (leave the boss rush to Gradius Konami, it fits there, and each boss is not a rehash of that games defeated bosses).
Hyper stone heist has a run button. Its better for that alone.
Sorry if I missed it in the review, but do you have a favorite turtle? Was always a Raphael guy, myself, but I love all of them.
My favorite as a kid was always Mike. But now... he’s pretty annoying.
"but the quality is lacking".
Them's fighting words. I prefer the Genesis' YM2612 crunchy sound by far!
Konami wins! End of story.
I love it how different Konami games were on each system. I can never decide which game is better with TMNT, Castlevania, Contra, etc because they are all top notch, they all made great use of each systems hardware, they are all different but about equally fun.
Turtles in Time is a fantastic arcade port. Hyperstone Heist benefits from being more original like Manhattan Project but feeling like an actual arcade game.
I absolutely loved Konami back in the day and still have a blast with their game collection. I'm impressed that we have different versions giving us more games to play and being able to see the specific hardware in action of each console pushing it's limit.
Konami had a few great arcade ports for PC-ENGINE/Turbo Graphx 16 but only had a great Castlevania title and didn't have a Contra, or TMNT game in their library.
Hyperstone heist is superior in input response and general ease of combat. It does lack certain gameplay mechanics and is kind of a crammed game, BUT despite much shorter game length and mechanics I found it to be much more enjoyable. Only negative thing about hyper stone is the gaunlet. Also, the level leading up to the boss flight with shredders second hand man from the live action movies is my favorite from the whole series. The train level in turtles in time is probably my favorite from that version
What gameplay mechanics are missing from hyperstone?
LMAO I'm sorry but that casual sip of water out of the Ninja Turtles glass was classic!
:)
Turtles in time was a better game but I liked Hyperstone more for some strange reason lol 🐢
I like the sega genesis version better for some reason
Turtles in time > hyperstone heist but hyperstone heist is great too
Some of the best co op experiences ever, along with sunset riders. Also, id say the turtlesintime soundtrack makes into my alltime top 5
I played both games back then. I enjoyed both, & still own them to this day.
Now you know what should have been done for the Sega Genesis? Instead of The Hyperstone Heist, there should have been a TMNT game where the Turtles end up in Dimension X after the 1st four levels. And the turtles go through various alien planets in search for a way home while fighting the usual Foot Soldiers, Roadkill Rodneys, Rock Soldiers, Mousers, & Robot Walkers. And its title should be... TMNT: Battle Across Dimension X.
Yes your right I absolutely love teenage turtles great games tv shows movies so much favorite 90s nostalgia as a also a 90s kid growing up I remind getting first video recorder and rent the first movie for the video store the first turtle movie
Man now I want a SNES! I have a genesis with about 30 games! But now I'm considering getting a SNES! I loved that turtles in time game when I was growing up! They are both great 16 bit consoles but the snes color advantage and scaling and rotation ( mode 7 ) make the SNES really great!!!!
HSH plays faster if you like action.
Love these games :) . In Turtle in Time you can do some moves while dashing . Some kind of front handspring with the A button I think, a slide on the back with arms and legs crossed I think ( called the snake ifI remember ) with the X button, and the shoulder hit with the Y button, and what's cool is that you can do some handspring and then trigger the snake or shoulder hit. You can also avoid hits while running all over the place in handspring move ( not 100 % sure of this one , or maybe not all hits ) :) .
I don't know if it's the same for hyperstone heist.
I can't believe you stole all the pizza 😆🍕
