Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Hyperstone Heist (Genesis) Playthrough

- A playthrough of Konami's 1992 license-based beat 'em up for the Sega Genesis, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Hyperstone Heist.
Played on hard mode with Michelangelo.
Nintendo's policies of the time prevented their third party publishers from releasing the same games for both Nintendo and Sega platforms. That didn’t stop Konami from remixing a couple of their hits for the Genesis, though, and after years of being left on the sidelines, Sega fans finally got a Ninja Turtles game to call their very own.
Hyperstone Heist plays almost exactly like Turtles in Time ( • Teenage Mutant Ninja T... ) did on the Super Nintendo, but with a few tweaks. It moves at a slightly quicker pace, there's now a dedicated dash button, and you can no longer throw enemies in to the screen.
But as similar as the games are, this isn't Turtles in Time, nor is it really an "original" game: most of it is made up of assets recycled from Konami's previous TMNT games. There are a couple of neat surprises, though. You get to fight Tatsu from the movie, and the third stage is an updated take on one of the levels that was exclusive to the NES version of the first arcade game ( • Teenage Mutant Ninja T... ).
As per the plot borrowed from The Manhattan Project ( • Teenage Mutant Ninja T... ), you battle through five extremely long stages in your attempt to save Manhattan from Shredder and Krang. The stages are broken up into multiple parts, but the game feels artificially drawn out thanks to the lack of variety and the seemingly endless waves of attacking foot soldiers. All of the games in the series do this to some extent, but The Hyperstone Heist likes to push its luck in this regard, especially when you consider that one of the stages is a boss rush. It doesn't feel as carefully considered and constructed nor as high budget as Turtles in Time did, but that's not to say that it's not fun or worthwhile.
The same goes for the presentation. The character sprites are sharp and vibrant and the animation is smooth, but the backgrounds tend to be pretty bland due to their lack of depth and color. The FM music is excellent - it really stretches the Genesis's sound chip, and the couple of tracks that were composed specifically for this game are awesome - but like in Konami's other games on the system, the digital effects sound awful. The drum samples, orchestra hits, and voice clips are loud, raspy, and distorted.
The Hyperstone Heist is a very good game, but it is also one that feels like it was put together as cheaply and quickly as possible from parts that were already lying around. It's fun, no doubt, and even better with a friend, but I don't think it ever quite lives up to its arcade and Nintendo counterparts.

NintendoComplete (www.nintendocom...) punches you in the face with in-depth reviews, screenshot archives, and music from classic 8-bit NES games!
I loved how Sega had its own version of games like Castlevania, Contra, Ninja Turtles and even Rockman
The Rockman games were all ports save for the hidden game on the compilation, the rest you listed were different yes.
@@Bloodreign1 No, the MegaMan games are not ports. They're actually REMAKES with brand new visual and audio assets befitting of a 16-bit console. Games made across different platforms are classified as remakes (most effort), ports (using existing assets and render them to run optimally on a different platform for better or worse), and emulation (least amount of effort). The upcoming Cowabunga collection is an example of emulation.
@@sdlock83 which was one better received the snes or genesis version? (not in terms of sales)
@@syfodias-jedimaster I don't think there were any porting of the same games between the Genesis & SNES. All are completely different games.

Out of all of the old gen games, this is my favorite overall. I love both turtles in time games, the Gameboy games and the old NES games. But this one will always be my favorite.
Shredder's design at the beginning is so awesome.
He's jacked af
Shredder is on that JUICE (steroids) makes him look like shit. His TMNT 1 Arcade look is WAY better💯
It's so cartoonist but intimidating at the same time lol
@@great159 why Steroids called "Juice" it's Drugs that's what it should be called.
A lot of assets were redrawn for this one to be more “hardcore” for the Genesis target audience.
This and Turtles in Time were the spark of why Genesis/SNES was the better console. It took me way too long to realize they were both amazing.
Which one did you like better between this one and In Time?
@@matthewsdonnelly both were great, but if you played the arcade version, you were probably more impressed by the SNES adaptation. Also you could throw enemies at the screen in that one, which made a lot of people say how the SNES was superior. But at the same time the Genesis version was something new for people who already loved the game. Personally I liked the Genesis game a bit better for the soundtrack and the wider screen, but I did miss some levels of the arcade version at the same time, while loving the levels that are unique here 😅 so though choice haha.
@@florianb3935 Hyperstone Heist is not a port of the Turtles In Time arcade; it's a separate game (though it reuses levels and concepts from previous 1989-1992 Turtles games). I'm glad it exists, but I definitely prefer Turtles in Time overall.
@@florianb3935 SNES may have the screen toss, but the Genesis has arcade-accurate music and more animation frames. Those are big advantages that lead me to believe that, were Konami allowed to directly port Turtles In Time to Genesis, it would have been the closest to the arcade original.
Hyperstone Heist is a fun alternative to Turtles in Time, but it doesn't dethrone that game as the reigning king of the 16-bit TMNT games.
The only bad things about this game is that it's kinda of short with the retooled BGM. (Although the Sega remixes are better!) Plus the selection of bosses feels skimpy too.
I'll definitely check this out on the Cowabunga Collection, it's a noble attempt at a Genesis TMNT game!
The only thing I didn't like about hyperstone was the length of the stages they overstayed their welcome, unlike turtles in time the stages were long enough without the game becoming stale
Yeah, ive ignored this version since first playing it. Its watered-down presentation isn't made up by any of the new stages or characters
snes turtles in time is still the king against hyper stone
I am only going to acquire the cowabonga collection for the first three snes games that unfortunately I could not have
Man what a time to be a live. This game was my childhood. Turtles in Time as well.
Loved the Background music in these.
This was my favorite TMNT of all time
The "Hyperstone" in question reminds me of the "Eye of Saarnoth," which was the alien artifact Shredder and Baxter Stockman were racing to get ahead of the Turtles in the 80's cartoon; it was in three fragments. Though Shredder did get the Eye assembled, it did little good.
rpg games all have glitches need quantum computer for rpg games but beatem ups and fighters shooters perfect for classical computers

The music in this game is sublime. It's pure audible chocolate.
@MonsterfromHell2543
So tell me... what do you think about the new indy beat em' up Ninja Turtles games we have been seeing lately. I'm also interested in hearing your opinion on Konam's Kawabunga Collection? I sure hope more retro Konami collections get released soon. ;)
I love TMMT IV Turtles In Time though I grew up on SNES in the early 90's
I just stumbled across your channel, it's great. I love retro games and more without comments it's just great. Thanks
Holy hell this music is so fucking good.
The soundtrack is phenomenal. It's even better than the SNES game.
@@Dorian_Scott Yup it’s nearly arcade-perfect. That Yamaha FM soundchip was magic. Essentially a direct, scaled-down port of the arcade ost, while the SNES was rebuilt from scratch for its sample-based chip, to mixed results. I really wish they had ported the Bury My Shell At Wounded Knee BGM to the Genesis. That FM harmonica was my whole world playing the arcade version as a 10 year old. I was super disappointed to hear it replaced by the same string sample they used as the lead for every tune on the SNES.😢 We only got a glimpse of the amazing harmonica on the Genesis Game Over screen.
@@Dorian_ScottI think the Super Nintendo better
@@cyandeoidre2375it had the better voice effects and music, but I prefer the sound effects in this one, as well as the presentation, overall.
This game always stood out to me as a really great example of creative asset re-use. You've got this pirate ship from Turtles in Time, so repurpose it as a ghost ship. The prehistoric cave? It's just a regular cave now. The sewer from TMNT 2? Have it be the start of the game.
It's such a weird thing to appreciate about the 8 and 16 bit era of games but it's something I love for some reason.
Reuse, reduce, recycle. Although this feels like the Dollar General version to _Turtles In Time._ Music's *WAY* better though!
Hyperstone Heist could have been so much better as solid as it is. Last segment of stage 1 you are walking on water fighting pizza monsters coming from beneath the water you are walking on 😑
I mean why not have them on there surfbords here fighting pizza monsters and then Rat King like on Snes? Which would then perfectly transition to stage 2.
@@edwardgaines6561 That last part is heavily your opinion though, and should not be treated as fact. Music tastes vary between different ears, and not everyone will agree. I find the music in this game to be good, but quite weak, there's no good POP to any tune.
Loved this. Prefered the hyperstone story. It was short but super replayable.
Counting down to the Cowabunga Collection. I can't wait
Same here
Beautiful memories, I remember playing this game 33 years ago.
I like this soundtrack.
This game is pretty much Konami's consolation prize for Sega owners that missed out on Turtles in Time due to Nintendo contractually telling them converting that game exclusively on SNES. It is a really good game in the TMNT line up, as long you don't bring its inevitable comparisons to the aforementioned Turtles in Time and the re-used assets from previous games (Baxter Stockman being the most egregious example of that) It makes up by having a more updated take on a TMNT2 nes stage, unique songs, and a boss for scene 3, which is Tatsu from the first two live action films, following the footsteps from Tokka & Rahzar in previous games. And yea this game is actually a bit longer than some others despite being only 5 stages.
The game is damned fine, save for that Boss Rush stage, which feels like a total coput, and should've been an entire stage of it's own, instead of just fighting the same bosses again, and reusing the first arcade games Baxter sprite. People want to call this game better than TiT, but this game has that crippling factor against it, while every stage and boss in Turtles in Time feels fresh and unique. They both take about the same amount of time to beat, and both games, even on the hardest settings shouldn't give a seasoned gamer too much trouble.

Hyperstone heist plays a little faster, which I like significantly.
m
PC Engine owners were SOL though.
I love hyperstone heist
insted of being a straight genesis port of turtles in time hyperstone heist does its own thing by being a pseudo sequel
also the hyperstone itself is a reference to an arc from the classic series cartoon
I never questioned this as a kid but why do the bosses explode after defeat lmao 😂
I remember playing this with my twin bro. Sigh memories
PIZZA POWER!
This was a really fun and underrated game. I did always wonder why no Bebop?
cuz he was in turtles in time they wanted to make it different and not repetive had to be that so people would get variety snes and sega was milking people money lol
What makes this game superior to the SNES-version is, that you could do instant-running by pressing a button and not waiting for 3-4 steps, as in the SNES-version. That way you could use shoulder-dash, salti and different leg-combos very fast and instant, also moving over the screen faster, which was really good. I used the running a lot and the shoulder-dash. After the shoulder-dash came the omote-gyaku, really nice. Years later, when I played the SNES-version, I found it waaaaayy too long and Slash as an enemy was a pain in the ass. Mode7 doesnt take the cake for me. Zooming sprites that become more pixeled the bigger they become are no argument to me.
1 move doesn't make a game better than another, it takes far, far more than that. You also complain about TiT's length, hate to tell you, this game is about the same length. The SNES was capable of doing far far more due to the 2 year gap in hardware between the 16 bit consoles. You sound like one of those old bitter Sega fans who blame Nintendo for Sega's demise, when it wasn't just them, but Sony, and Sega's own ability to fuck themselves over.
Mode 7, and scaling sprites are far greater than a dash move relegated to 1 button. If that does it for you, your standards are low, real low. This game is nothing but reused assets from other TMNT games outside of 1 sprite in the game, doesn't impress me, makes me believe that Sega rushed out a TMNT game for Genesis fans, because TiT did quite well, and Sega figured a game for Genesis would do well, it didn't. TiT is beloved and fondly remembered today, Hyperstone Heist will forever have to live in Turtles in Time's shadow.
The switch needs this and the X-men arcade in their library

Great game
I played both The The Hyperstone Heist and Turtles in Time. Both games are good and have their strengths and weaknesses. With The Hyperstone Heist, I have to say that that weakness would have to go to the scratchy voice samples. Everything else about the game is fine to me.
I remember when I rented this with my brother one weekend. We enjoyed it, but I distinctly remember both of us having a "It's definitely no Turtles in Time" conversation after our third or fourth completion.
Turtles in Time it's better because you can throw the enemies to the screen, in Hyperstone Heist you can't do that

SNES had the graphics.
Genesis had the speed.
Arcade has both.
That's why I preferred the Mortal Kombat and Turtle games for SNES💯
The levels are long and nice that’s what I like. What I dislike is the fact that every boss explodes like a bomb.
The best TMNT games ever 🤘
The Hyperstone Heist was surely a fun TMNT game, but was lacking in some aspects.
That being said, you know what should have been done instead? A Genesis TMNT game where the Turtles fight their way into the Technodrome, then end up sent into Dimension X. There, the Turtle explore different planets in search of a way home. Like they first end up on a beautiful alien forest planet, similar to Xen from Black Mesa. Then after hijacking an enemy ship, the Turtles explore an ice planet, a mining complex on the familiar rocky planet, an alien looking city, then fly through space on hoverboards, then enter Krang’s spaceship, which has the portal home, where they of course fight Super Shredder as the final boss.
Makes me think of a Star Wars beat 'em up!
That idea sounds cooler but it would've been a lot more work for what is essentially a consolation version. Hyperstone Heist was a way to give Sega Genesis owners a "kinda" version of Turtles in Time since it was exclusive to Nintendo at the time, so they just reused and recycled assets from Turtles in Time and TMNT 2 (Even recycling the intro) and reshuffled it into a new game.
This guy is the fcing master.
Ty! :)
I really like this game, I don't consider it a port of Turtles in Time but rather it's own thing. Great game
As a reimagining of Turtles in time, it's not bad at all
Agreed. It's a testament to how developers actually gave more of a crap back in the day; even when they were recycling stuff, they still managed to add new things in like the different bosses and unique music, which is a lot more effort than we get with most stuff now. What a treat being able to play these games in one place whenever we want will be!
I have a cartridge. Nostalgia...
Personnally, I always though that the stage Shredder's hideout was a stage cutted from turtles in time that should have taken place in feodal japan between skull and crossbone and bury my shell at wounded knee.
Wish I would have known about this on Sega as a kid. I was too obsessed having MK3 and Ultimate MK3 and then NBA Live 98 (even though it had crappy graphics). Loved the TMNT games on NES
mk3 was a dissapointment.. Umk3 different story lol
@@syfodias-jedimaster Eh, I would have rather had a ps1 with MKTrilogy
@@sicorange3 forgot about trilogy. Wasnt it essentially the same as umk3?
@@syfodias-jedimaster Essentially, but UMK3 was just a beefed up version as MK3 itself. Trilogy had more bosses, maybe a few more 'classic' style characters, and more locations (areas from all 3 I believe).
GREAT TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES : THE HYPERSTONE HEIST - ON SEGA GENESIS -PLAYTROUGH !!!!
Hyperstone Heist I had never played until Cowabunga Collection, and presentation is a huge step down from Turtles in Time. But I would argue that the music quality, speed, and control make it otherwise one of the best TMNT games out there.
That's because the music, speed, and control feel are directly from the TMNT 2 Turtles In Time Arcade game which is WAY better than the SNES version💯
Hyperstone Heist > Turtles in Time
Well designed game.
That brought me back! Thank you!
Oh, tatsu from the movie is a boss???
I don't see what you mean about the samples in this game. Sure, the voices are a bit course, but the drums sound great and the orchestra hits get the job done.

A weird amalgamation of TMNT: The Arcade Game, Manhattan Project and Turtles in Time on the Genesis, with a few original elements mixed in. Pretty fun though I'd rather play the originals.

Was this Sega’s version of Turtles in time?
Most of my criticism of this game is levied at it's lazy boss gauntlet level.
Think that the people living inside those buildings got shrunken too
Throw a few more bosses in and it would be awesome. I feel like that was the main difference in the two games along with the sound and the mode 7 effects. Most of the levels from the SNES are there, they're just condensed versions with no boss. And as far as the music, this is the only Konami Genesis game that used orchestral crashes which Konami used on just about every arcade game they developed in the early 90s.
Lethal Enforcers has them, too.
SNES loses the musical battle here too. Compare the second-to-last theme, the Technodrome elevator theme, between Sega and Nintendo. Sega is clearly better!
@@NintendoComplete I forgot about that one. I think they used them during that car part from the first level
@@edwardgaines6561 They aren't meant to beat each other, thanks to both consoles differing sound chips, they compliment each other quite well, and are a shining example of how well Konami knew how to use both chips to their fullest. Konami wasn't trying to compete with itself, it just cared about the money it made from the games.

I’m a bit turned off by the lazy Gauntlet level to reuse previous bosses as a level but other than that it’s a good game.
Yeah, that level does suck. But the bosses are fun to fight, so it's not the _worst_ thing.
@@Dorian_Scott Plus they at least add a new boss at the end, Baxter Stockman.
Konami does that a lot with their beat em ups especially arcades. At least you know the game is almost over by that point.
@matt X-Men, Crime Fighters, Vendetta, and I'm sure there were others but I'm too tired to think of them.
It's the games hugest flaw, and an absolute knockout to it, and one of many reasons Genesis fans felt Konami never fully put full effort into their Genesis catalog (though Rocket Knight Adventures shows what a motivated Konami could do on a then strange console to them). I think the Genesis was able to process music differently than SNES I seem to remember…
One thing that always bugged me in the console TMNT Turtle in Times’ is that unlike the arcade game, using special moves will drain your energy, which makes it undesirable to use them.
That's true, but that does come with a trade-off. In the arcade game you don't get the invincibility frames that you do in the console games while using special moves.
Yea the reward for using them is negligible. I only use the special's around pizza's so I get to see a different attack animation.
The arcade version is made to take your money, you'll notice your health deplete far faster in it for a reason.

TIT is way smoother and better colouring. I’m surprised the crappy sega sound chip is this good. Not that far off from the snes. Never seen any footage of this game let alone hear anybody even mention this game.
TiT is considered legendary, and is spoken of highly, and when this upcoming collection was announced, it resparked talk about it. Hyperstone Heist on the other hand, has always been relegated as the lesser game , which it is, but is still solid fun to play. It's just not tlked about all that much, because it came out to little fanfare, and I only knew about it all those years ago because a couple friends of mine, who are siblings, rented the game, and showed it off at school.
