This was a special experience for me. I’ve known this song since I was a kid and have great memories singing this in the car with my fam on road trips. I hope you enjoy our take on this iconic American classic. Thanks for watching and sharing!
It was amazing Rob.
You did it justice 🙏 thank you
Yall did great!
This version gave me the chills 😊
I couldn't get enough of this song when it was originally released way back when. Many many memories later, here I am in the same pickle; can't get enough of this version either! It's awesome!!!
Nobody talking about how great Don McLean sounds at 75? Holy smokes!
Ah yes.....when real music was made!! Thank you Am Free!!
Fairly certain there is a fair amount of autotune involved here.
He's a woman beater, I use to live in Maine where he lives and he as in court several times for abusing his wife, so I have nothing good to say about him.
@@skinlo01 definitively so. They were good about it, but I can definitely hear it every so often. It's the style of today's music production.
@@skinlo01 They mostly auto tune people who could never sing in the first place. They also sing who should only stand and watch.
Let’s just appreciate Adam Rupp for a second.. he had to beatbox for more than 6 minutes that’s not easy to do
Truly, Adam Rupp is among the greats!
But we all knew he was there the entire time. 😉
I am 85 years old. This talent does not get recognition in this day and age. Bravo Don Mc Lean and Home Free.
Thank you so much for watching yall!
❤
Thank you for the music. It was an amazing rendition.
My favorite group sang my favorite song...THANK YOU! This was a great day.
It's so good!
I can assure you, it was our pleasure to listen.
The fact that they got Don McLean to join them doesn’t even surprise me anymore
He really made it in all the right places. So great it brings tears. It was a little disorienting trying to follow as they kept jumping around to different boxes, and I got an ad in the middle of it, boo. But such a great song.
@@recoveringsoul755 I actually loved following them to each box,lol This was EPIC!🔥🔥🔥
@@annemayseyfried8907 they're gonna make me spend real money, I just know it
I heard Don McLean was the one who asked them to do it with him.
@@recoveringsoul755 if you're watching on a phone, you can skip the ads by simply moving the red bar all the way to the end, then replaying it.
OMG. OMG. OMG. Don McClean, at his age, belting it out with the best a capella group out there? And it's free on RUclips? God loves us and he wants to be happy. I first heard this song when I was 15 and it electrified me. This rendition brought it all back. Thanks to all, so, so much.!!!
Didn't Ben Franklin say beer was the proof God loves us and wants us to be happy?
ditto, ditto, ditto!!! ... in awe
EXACTLY, SUPERB!!!
It is one heck of a song, ain't it.!!!
i have to say, your reply was worth the price of admission! Wait, is that free too?!
So glad Don picked Home Free for this project.
Hello Nancy. How are you doing?
Great group to play with 😊
Don McLean and Home Free have just won the internet.

Not even close! Terrible!
I know we always talk about Tim's range, but can we take a moment and talk about Chance's range. Holy Moly!! He shined in this one!!!
Agreed his verse was my favorite
Chance impressed me SO much. I definitely underappreciated him before now.
Ditto. He has a fabulous country tenor. This particular combo has me remembering my Church-of-Christ 4-part harmonies. Of couse HF is much better. I hope the make it th the pandemic financially. I greatly enjoy their music -- im ill bed bound and severe early onset dementia and the music by HF seems to let my brain think agin, if only for a while. Puting on bose headphones, nois cancelling, just feeling centered... TY HF.
He actually went higher than Tim in this particular part.
Honestly my favorite part of this song is Chance's segment
Forgot to add: How clean and crisp is Don’a voice? Still singing like a champ!!!!!
Unfortunately it's fairly autotuned. If you listen carefully you can hear it.
This was amazing. I loved it how they supported Don McLean and let him have the spotlight. Well done! Bravo.
Can we just take a moment to appreciate the unsung beatboxing?
Most definitely!! So good it fit seamlessly. One of the many things to appreciate about these guys, EVERY part is amazing and they share the spotlight so well.
For real I thought it was legit drums
Adam is really good, first rate beat boxer!
Amen 🙏🏽
Adam Rupp is a gift to rhythm for all of us who can pretend to keep a beat there is Adam...keeping us all on time...LOL
The Day the Music Died was 62 years ago today, rest in peace to those legends.
I forgotten about that
Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper. It could've been Waylon Jennings, but he gave up his place to the Bopper, since he had a bad cold or the flu. Waylon took the bus and lived.
Yes, rest in peace to those legends!! 😥
@@darkiee69 check your music history. Richie had the cold and won the coin toss which cost him his life.
@@kathyshannon7476 You check your's. Valens won his seat from Tommy Allsup, Buddy's back up guitarist. Waylon GAVE his seat to the big bopper because he was sick.
I'm 60 years old and tears in my eyes. Thank you Home Free and Don McLean, this is very special.
Just as sweet and smooth like it was yesteryear!
I'm also 60 years old and have tears in my eyes as well. Hard to believe so many years have passed since the original song came out. It's as relevant today as it was back then.
Same
I am 64 years old and I am having to fight back tears as the joyful memories flood back of driving down the road in my 66 Chevelle with the windows down and the 8-track cranked up listening to this song coming out of the old 6x9 speakers in the back. Don McLean was unbelievable. Thank you so much!
right there with you brother -
If you fought then back you are a better man.
Cryin now
So sad
Yep 68 chevy 1/2 ton cap on the back 6x9 speakers and wires ran from the 8track!! good gracious what memories this brings back!
Whats your vocal range?
Tim: Yes.
At this point i want to see him go against mitch in pentatonix...
depends on the length of his hair apparently
This made me laugh, so true.
@@itjamie9055 a better comparison would be Avi Kaplan, formerly of Pentatonix.
@@GeekGamer666Robertson Avi Kaplan is featured in Home Free - Ring of Fire. Check it out.
Don McLean holding his own while singing with the best vocal group of all time. How impressive is that?
He's a legend, so....lol
It's not impressive. It's magical.
Quite incredible!
As amazing as Home Free is, they would most likely say that they were holding their own with Don McLean.
If you knew how many takes and how much ... yeah, he's not a great singer. Never was. He's a great song-writer. That's enough.
Today is the 64th anniversary of the loss of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson. I love this version of this iconic song. Don McLean sounds, if anything, even better than he did in 1970!
Fewer and fewer people grew up listening to this, but this is part of my soul! I was born in '56 and it's part of the soundtrack of my life. These guys did it absolute justice!
28 right now, and I still sing it when it comes on the radio. And I have it on my computer and phone. Dad and Gramma shaped my taste in music. I like almost all genres, but classic songs like this one are my favorites.
Born in 1956 as well. Loved and still love this epic song.
1956 good year me too!
I did.. my parent gave me such a large musical experience..
It's very important to me even though I was born in 2007, thanks to my dad who showed so much good music!
Adam Chance nailed that Baritone lead. That was great Home Free!!!!!
I feel as though Adam Rupp doesn't get enough credit/recognition for his beat boxing skills, credit where credit's due.
So many times in songs you forget hes there because it sounds like a instrument. So talented at what he does and the group would not be the same without him at all.
@@acbigal Literally! Wasn’t the group created by him and his brother, who’s no longer with them?
I'd argue against that. Tim and Adam are probably two of the most credited people in the group in my opinion, along with Austin as well. I'd say Chance gets the least credit because he isn't usually the lead singer, and the songs where he is the lead aren't as popular as most of their others. However my favourite part of this song was Chances verse, I think he killed it.
Adam Rupp is incredible!
@@hyredavidnp the group was started by Adam and brother Chris who was with the group until about 3 years ago. Chance was a worthy replacement and some of their best songs are since he joined, although, they have some beautiful songs with Chris as baritone. They just keep getting better!
Don McLean killed it. ❤ Again. Home Free= Awesomeness
I'd hope so. he's been singing this one since the late '70s.
Great to hear that he's still go such an excellent voice after all those years.
Gorgeous boys!
And they have all the original lyrics .. thank you so much all of you! 😊
So it is the 50th anniversary of this song in 2021 and he chose to do a rendition with you guys? Wow, great job Home Free!
More and more awesomeness
Seriously 😳 respect ✊ them all
The best part is that Don actually contacted homefree, not the other way around
Chance NAILED his solo, wow! Great job everyone. This was a wonderful cover!
Sure he did
Don mclean's voice isn't 75, it's timeless. Love this song, love this rendition! Thank you for sharing your gifts with us 💜
These guy's are insane, how are they not more famous!
This is amazing and brings back a very special memory for me every time I hear this song. I apologize if this is boring to others. I was in the U.S. Navy for a long time, and in 2003, I was on a 9 month deployment to the Pacific region. We pulled into Perth-Freemantle, Australia for 4 days. We go to a bar (go figure) in Freemantle with hundreds of U.S. Sailors and Australians, partying hard. The live band began playing "American Pie", and the entire bar, everyone, began singing. Everyone on every floor and every room of the bar. The band stopped singing, kept playing the music and just sat back and watched it unfold. Played the song twice because of the reaction. It was awesome, a piece of home for the Americans, and all of the Australians knew it, singing along with us at the top of their lungs. I will never forget that. Thank you. You guys are awesome! And thank you Mr. McLean. Your creation is timeless, and brings joy to so many people!
Thank you for the story. M, 02/08/2021
Thank you for both the incredible story and your service
From one Vet to another, that story is amazing. Thank you for it.
Thank you for your service! My dad was a Navy man, he was a retired Captain. That had to be an amazing experience..thanks for sharing!
Aulder, wonderful story!!! Thanks for sharing!! American Pie always makes you want to sing and dance!!!!
Don McLean's voice has just gotten sweeter and smoother over the years.
I thought so too

Absolutely fabulous! That Don McLean would redo his classic with Home Free is the biggest vote of conficence ever!
WOW Don is awesome. I'm 68 and I remember this clearly. 😊
I love how Don is featured prominently.
In Lubbock today the Buddy Holly museum is remembering his death. So cool you released this song on the anniversary of the day the music died.
Were they singing this will be the day that we die?

@@Krullespam I know when Buddy Holly, and Richie Valens died mate, Waylon Jennings was also supposed to be on that plane but he gave his seat up to Buddy Holly's bass player
This is now my favorite version of this song. I imagine that Don gets a bit tired of performing it the same way all the time, and this was probably a treat for him.I know it was for me.
No, he had three songs. So it was a rotation. His concerts lasted exactly 19 minutes. LOLOL
He suggested he wanted to bop the song up.

I know what you mean. The home movies and newsreels, running alongside the singers, captured the Zeitgeist of my youth.
it's great to see you again Mr. McLean! You look and sound amazing!
When I heard Chris was leaving, years ago, I thought man he is going to be tough to replace. And he really wasn't replaced. Instead by God's blessing he gave us Adam Chance as an amazing addition to an already amazing group of talent. The fact that every member of this group could be successful as solo artist and yet they have chosen to bless us all as a group, is a wonderful surprise in a "me first" society. So much talent in the group that it probably should be criminal. :)

Absolutely marvelous rendition, and this had to be one of the last things that Mr. McClean did.
I LOVE what Chance does in this one. He's a star with a velvet voice ❤

Thank you, men of Home Free, thank you Don McLean.
I love Tim's range! He is an awesome bass singer, but in this song his voice is so clear and smooth in the higher, baritone range. Very great! Don McLean also sounds awesome as well!
I agree I thought Tim’s voice was so beautiful sounding. I usually praise Austin’s voice but wow Tim just shined on this song.
He looks awesome, too!
And did you notice the super smooth hand off of the bass line from Tim to Chance and then back to Tim when he finished his lead section?
Tim is a near illegally rare talent for sheer vocal range, but Chance is his near equal.
Don McLean's voice still brings tears to my eyes for the loss of those legends and those times. Home Free brings their own gorgeous voices to this anthem. Very haunting, very beautiful, very sweet, and very sad. Thank you.

Don’s voice is amazing. It’s has these inflections and nuances that the younger Don didn’t have. And my Home boys took it to the river and back. Now a lot of kids will be able to connect to Don through Home Free. Bless you all.
Many older singers lose their full voice power but Don sounds great. Still smooth and the range is still there. He never did vocal gymnastics so he probably didn't strain it too much, but 40+ years performing is going to leave a mark somewhat on the vocal cords.
Love this song you guys have produced. Couldn't believe it was eight minutes long. Great from start to finish. Mr McLean, my complements to you sir. You sound just as young as ever. This is a treat. Home Free, thank you. The respect you show to the original artists is appreciated. I bet a lot of these artists never expected to be headlining a song with a group of young ones at this stage in their careers. Oh man the originals are so talented, they shame us for being young and lazy with the gifts God gave us. What makes me a lifelong fan of Home Free besides your talent as singers, musicians, comedians and actors, is the humble and respectful vibe you guys send out. All the artists i have ever followed have this trait in common with you. Just realized that.

Gotta say, props to Adam Rupp, this is a long song to do beats for. Absolutely amazing version of this song!! Everybody sounds so good!
Actually in my 5 years of practicing beatboxing, I actually found a technique on the Internet that some beatboxers do. It’s really hard for me to pull off because I’m still trying to do it, but you have to breathe in through your nose while beatboxing. I can promise you it’s really hard to get down
@@countrygamer9910 circular breathing. We also use it when playing an instrument. A dude and I that made all state band every year would always crack the director up on the first day "ok, everyone give me key of C, first note, hold it as long as you can."

A long, long time ago
I can still remember how that music
Used to make me smile
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those people dance
And maybe they'd be happy for a while
But February made me shiver
With every paper I'd deliver
Bad news on the doorstep
I couldn't take one more step
I can't remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride
Something touched me deep inside
The day the music died
So, bye-bye, Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry
And them good ol' boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin', "This'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die"
Did you write the book of love
And do you have faith in God above
If the Bible tells you so?
Now, do you believe in rock 'n' roll
Can music save your mortal soul
And can you teach me how to dance real slow?
Well, I know that you're in love with him
'Cause I saw you dancin' in the gym
You both kicked off your shoes
Man, I dig those rhythm and blues
I was a lonely teenage bronckin' buck
With a pink carnation and a pickup truck
But I knew I was out of luck
The day the music died
I started singin', bye-bye, Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry
Them good ol' boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin', "This'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die"
Now, for ten years we've been on our own
And moss grows fat on a rollin' stone
But that's not how it used to be
When the jester sang for the king and queen
In a coat he borrowed from James Dean
And a voice that came from you and me
Oh, and while the king was looking down
The jester stole his thorny crown
The courtroom was adjourned
No verdict was returned
And while Lenin read a book on Marx
A quartet practiced in the park
And we sang dirges in the dark
The day the music died
We were singin', bye-bye, Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry
Them good ol' boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin', "This'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die"
Helter skelter in a summer swelter
The birds flew off with a fallout shelter
Eight miles high and falling fast
It landed foul on the grass
The players tried for a forward pass
With the jester on the sidelines in a cast
Now, the halftime air was sweet perfume
While sergeants played a marching tune
We all got up to dance
Oh, but we never got the chance
'Cause the players tried to take the field
The marching band refused to yield
Do you recall what was revealed
The day the music died?
We started singin', bye-bye, Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry
Them good ol' boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin', "This'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die"
Oh, and there we were all in one place
A generation lost in space
With no time left to start again
So, come on, Jack be nimble, Jack be quick
Jack Flash sat on a candlestick
'Cause fire is the Devil's only friend
Oh, and as I watched him on the stage
My hands were clenched in fists of rage
No angel born in Hell
Could break that Satan spell
And as the flames climbed high into the night
To light the sacrificial rite
I saw Satan laughing with delight
The day the music died
He was singin', bye-bye, Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry
Them good ol' boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin', "This'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die"
I met a girl who sang the blues
And I asked her for some happy news
But she just smiled and turned away
I went down to the sacred store
Where I'd heard the music years before
But the man there said the music wouldn't play
And in the streets the children screamed
The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed
But not a word was spoken
The church bells all were broken
And the three men I admire most
The Father, Son and the Holy Ghost
They caught the last train for the coast
The day the music died
And they were singin', bye-bye, Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry
And them good ol' boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin', "This'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die"
They were singin', bye-bye, Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry
Them good ol' boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin', "This'll be the day that I die"

I'm 75 and have to say, this was so very awesome! Thank you for doing such a great rendition of one of the best songs ever recorded! I loved it! Don McLean has always been a favorite of mine and more recently, I've discovered Home Free....love you all!
I have never heard a better alternative way of singing this song until now. Awesome mad skills to the boys of Home Free and Don Mclean for making a great song even more special.
2:11 Chance is amazing
I was ten years old when this song came out... my sister told me it was about when the plane crash killed three great men of music. Later, as I grew older, and loved the song, and listened to it often, I still wondered about some of the meaning. FINALLY at age 58 now, this version has FINALLY made me understand the entire message of the song..... THANK YOU. Mr. McLean, I know you will NEVER see this comment, but thank you, this was and is one of the *GREATEST* songs ever written. Home Free, thank YOU for finally having it make sense to me.
Would you care to enlighten those of us who have yet to realize what it's really about?
@@janus9371 There isn't enough time and it would be like ten pages to explain. Besides, it is just what it means to me. It could mean something totally different to someone else. That is part of the beauty of the music, the lyrics, and the interpretation of them.
@@LadyDragonsblood Fair enough. Thank you for the unexpectedly quick reply XD
@@janus9371 LOL---- I kinda live on YT.... it is my television!
@@janus9371 I've begun a post dealing with the meaning of it all, and the background is part of it all too. I don't know if it's on this part, but I can assure you I'll finish it soon. I think about the age of Don McLean when he began to write this, also, he didn't write it all in one go. It seems to me there were so many things going on in his world at this time some of which may have had an effect on him. Remember he delivered newspapers every day, and would have read all the big stories as they happened,I consider this my jumping off point, so to speak, and I go from there. Hope this helps, but keep looking as I'll finish it quite soon. I'm sure there'll be plenty people who'll try to shoot my theory down, but hey when I'm finished I won't care what they say. It's going to be my essay, mine.
Speak soon.
That was beautiful! I love that Rob, Austin, Tim, and Chance all got to take a solo and extra kudos to Adam for his beat boxing!
THAT was absolutely AWESOME!!!!!!!! This is the very best version of this song I have ever heard. Kudos to the guys for bringing Don into it to sing. That made this spectacular. Home Free you rock!!!!
Oh my god chance is both so underrated and underappreciated
He's new, give fans a chance (hehe). He's enormously talented so I'm sure most people will catch on.
@@sspaay Chance has been in the group for almost five years, he's not new. I agree that he's underrated; in my opinion, he's the best singer in the group (which is saying something, as they're all incredible).
@@RRB99 Really? Who's been with the group less time? Everything is relative.
@@sspaay He might be the newest but he’s far from “new”. He’s been with the group longer than Chris Rupp was after The Sing-Off.
All of the guys in home Free are amazing and have vital roles in Home Free.
I’m old enough to remember when this song was first released. So I can say that Adam Rupp’s beatboxing here is phenomenal!
Thought I was the only "oldie but goodie" lol!!! This was just great! What memories...glad I can still remember them!!ha!!
Respect Don Mc Lean
I have NOTHING BUT LOVE FOR THIS!!!!! What a delightful surprise to discover that, not only is Don McLean still around, he continues to show off an impressive set of pipes!
Hello Susan. How are you doing?
I'm really enjoying Chances voice on your recent stuff. Man it sounds smooth. Austin and Rob are always solid rocks. Tim has changed it up a little showing off his upper register more. I love all your stuff man. What a great tribute to Don Mclean!
Hello how are you doing today 💕❤️
Chance in great voice! Loved this.
Hello how are you doing today??
Hello Pretty 💝
They recorded this with Don McLean, and it was the first time he ever recorded with another artist in a studio recording. This was a virtual recording for the video. They won three Telly Awards for it. Amazing stuff indeed.
Also born in 1956, Don McLean sang "Vincent" - also a classic. Loved it in high school, still love it!! Thank you for a great version, Home Free also rocks.
I’ve been around a long time, crying through Kennedy, Kennedy, and King. And I’ve seen the music die many times, from Patsy Cline and Buddy Holly early on, then Elvis, up to Michael Jackson, Freddie Mercury, Prince, David Bowie, and so many more. So grateful for recordings. Love this glorious rendition. Thanks Don. Thanks Home Free.
Don't forget Rickie Nelson...
And John Lennon
@@aprilk467 nahhh!
And Tom Petty.
I just now realize David Bowie died that’s such a sad thing
There are no words to describe the talent of each of these men, and of their collective work ... blown away.
Hello how are you doing??😍
My favorite version. Amazing when artists like Don McLean & The Oak Ridge Boys perform with HF, it’s a testament to their marvelous artistry.
I'm really kinda shocked that Don's voice is still so clear and strong. Amazing.
Now be honest how many were singing along? I tried not to but I just had to. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you Don McLean and home free!
Hello how are you
Boys, boys, boys, this has got to be one of your absolute best! You’re all sounding amazing and what an arrangement! Plus the legend himself. Fantastic work gents!
I sent this to about 30 people and one of them sent it to 20 more. That's just today. This is an incredible rendition, of one of the most important American songs ever written.
This was my introduction to Home Free, and it still gives me chills and brings me to tears.
