When Liu Kang said "Flawless Victory" at the end, as a kid I said "Pffht! Yeah right! You got hit a few times! Dosen't count!". Then I realized something just now. The fight is kind of set up like 3 rounds similar to the game where you need best 2/3 to win. At the start of the video, 1st round begins. Liu gets his ass beat and the 2nd round starts @0:42. Tsung gets his ass beat and the 3 round starts @1:52. Liu Kang combos his ass without taking damage and does a Stage Fatality. In a way, it's a flawless victory in that sense.
Thats what the creator of the movie intended.
Liu was never cut, bruised or scratched. So in that sense, he was flawless through the whole fight; doesn't matter that he was punched, kicked, and thrown by Shang Tsung in this fight.
@@realdealnealcrook8940 But in the Mortal Kombat games you loose life once you are punched. And the Characters also doesn't have a Scratch in the first games.
@@sonyx4500 yeah I know what the video game's definition of flawless is, I'm just saying that the movie directors and script writers were probably going by the real life definition of flawless in a fight. Plus, the characters do bleed in the first mk video games if you punch, kick, elbow or headbutt them in the face, Kano stabs them with his knife or Scorpion hits them with his vein spear attack.
I agree. And Shang Tsung only got him towards the end tbh by taking him by surprise.
Robin Shou as Liu Kang is amazing!
How did he do that kind of punch?
Luikang is the best of the times
@@hunterku9520 Back Forward 1 i think .
Who's Robin Shou . That's Liu Kang in real life
Philip There aka Tommy Lee from Best of the Best would of been a better Liu Kang!
Robin gave Liu so much life, depth, and character. He was also a badass martial artist
Jake yeh and Robin acthuly broke six ribs during this fight scene
And not a bad actor as far as martial artists go.
He is the true Liu Kang
The scene of Liu Kang pointing his finger at Shang Tsung's face could be a good meme.
Thanks, I did.
These two will always be my Liu Kang and Shang Tsung.
Super fax
💯
Yes sir.
The old man in the first Mortal Kombat is mine
And Johny Cage
The best Shang Tsung's actor!
guess what, the mk11 has his likeness
Im so glad hes in mk 11 they even have the voice
More like the only shang tsung actor
Something interesting i found out, Cary Tagawa is some kind of sports medicine healer???? he worked in Hawaii for a while.
@Osama Manan yep
For those saying it was not Flawless Victory: Technically when he got up was the start of round 3. He never got hit, so the round counts as a flawless victory.
Yes, but isn't victory announced after multiple rounds are won?
@@frankviator8315 You’re right, but it would be silly for one of the characters to say “I WIN” after each one 😂
@@steevysleepy7326 maybe shouldve said 'fatality'
@@MightyHawx That would have been epic.
@@MightyHawx Fatality was already said earlier in the movie. Shang Tsung said it. You only get someone saying it once per movie.
"All of those souls and you still don't have one of your own. I pity you, sorcerer."
"Save your pity for the weak!"
I love this exchange.
"Surrender, it's over!"
"NEVEEEEERRR!!"
Liu: "Okay, so go to hell already".
I love that he kept his integrity and kept fighting to his death rather than surrendering. He knew he was finished but refused to go down without giving the fight all he had.
Legit I thought he said save your pity for the week 😂😂
If Liu Kang followed up that pity line with
"That's why I said it."
It would have been funny although lightly out of character for Liu.
@@KianaK0423That’s more of a Johnny Cage line but it would of been good
Robin Shou is a really underrated and forgotten actor.
He is
He's good in death race 1 and briefly in 2 I think
He is not forgotten to me

Remember the good old days when action scenes didn't rely on shaky cams or over-the-top CGI and you could actually tell what was happening on screen? I mean, for a fight between a shaolin monk and an inmortal sorcerer this choreography is pretty awesome because of its simplicity!
pepperidge farm remembers :P
Fight one vs one.
Punch fight.
Yep. Now we have cgi fest marvel films and bad action choreography
Yeah, and all flips were real, not CGI or on strings like now, when you clearly see that they are fake.
Another cringe old head
Can we take a second to appreciate how good liu's punches were to shangs face.
Yeah similarly In shaolin monk opening liu kang punches tsangsung the same way
Even the camera felt the taste of Liu's fiery fists too.
I know he's a really cool guy IRL, but the actor who plays Shang Tsung was perfect since he naturally looks really fucking evil.
I saw Cary at a Halloween charity event when I was eight or so. Even then I wasn’t phased by seeing actors but it blew my mind that Shang Tsung right in front of me. My brother and I asked him for an autograph and he was gracious enough to write us one with “Your soul is mine!” Still have it.
Watch him in Johnny Tsunami and he's the total opposite 😂
Just like Robert Englund in The Paper Brigade.
Cary. Coolest actor to watch on tv.
@@andrewhudson7108 A "Friendship" by Shang Tsung... !
Top notch reference. Freddy Krueger as crazy man cooper in the paper brigade 😂😂😂
Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (Shang Tsung) was 45 years old when this was made, could only wish I looked that fit in my 20's
Lackrobat. Raul Julia was older than Cary Hiroyuki- Tagawa as General M. Bison at age 54 at the time. Cary Tagawa was born in 1950. Raul Julia was born in 1940.

OUTSTANDING !!
YOU HAVE DEFEATED SHANG TSUNG !!
YOU ARE THE SUPREME MORTAL KOMBAT WARRIOR !
And according to the games he did win the first tournament also

The good days :)
That was awesome!
Indeed
You cut out such a damn good line of dialogue between the two.
Chan: “Remember when our parents died and you promised that you would always take care of me?”
Liu: “I remember.”
Chan: “Now it's my turn to take care of you, brother. Liu, come with me. I forgive you for letting me die.”
Liu: “No. It wasn't my fault.”
Chan: “Brother...”
Liu: “No! Chan chose his own path. Every man is responsible for his own destiny. Shang Tsung killed my brother!!!”
I still get chills.
thank you for reminding me. Probably one of the most powerfully acted scenes I've seen in my early years. A handful of other details include: 'Liu!' in the beginning right before the dream ends, Kano's actor committing himself 100% to his depiction of a perfect 90's cartoon villain, and those two really excited unnamed twins sharing the moment together watching Goro toss around Johnny Cage.
The real mortal Kombat movie 😍😍
This movie was a flawless victory! As kid growing up seeing this in theaters was a dream come true back then.
*Liu Kang:* "Flawless Victory"
*Shang Tsung:* "You... idiot. That's not... how it works... uhh." (dies)
Hahaha
Shang Tsung in this movie doesn't know what a Flawless Victory is either.
Cary should have said that.
Just IMAGINE if Sonya DID accept the challenge.
According to the film's official magazine Mortal Kombat: The Ultimate Battle for Humanity, Shang Tsung intended for Sonya to become his queen after successfully conquering Earthrealm. I guess he really WAS in love with her.
Fatality
He did flawless the third round
Robin Shou will forever be immortalized by this film. Way to waste an amazing talent Hollywood.
I only know he was in this and Beverly Hills Ninja.
Death race as 14k
You have to be smart enough to know when to turn down a bad movie gig. Anyone who would have read the script for Mortal Kombat 2: Annihilation would easily see that it was clearly a cheap money grab. That's why A and B list actors are constantly turning down bad offers...they know too many crappy movies could potentially tank their careers. Robin Shou and his agent(s) should have turned it down for something better. All I'm saying is there isn't some invisible entity called "Hollywood" that purposefully went and screwed Robin Shou. Robin Shou basically screwed himself, lol.
@@rbc13183 A guaranteed pay-day, along with a production crew behind the scenes bringing in talented peers known in the stunt-choreographer world in the West at the time, Annihilation made a world of sense. The suits released the film before effects were finalized (not that it would have made a difference tbh). Plenty of up and comers had their fair share of terrible films. An Asian male-lead is a HARD-SELL in Hollywood. Robin Shou was thrown to the curb, plain and simple. More than likely Shou had turned down a myriad of sterotypical roles that downplayed any validity spawned from MK:1 and his work with Farley.
@@rbc13183 Not like Hollywood has ever done anything good for the Chinese American in films. I mean they hardly get air time just as Latinos get the Vato roles. Dont forget the times of when these Good people were actors. I mean shi todays Era we still got hate on the Asian community smh.🙏

johnrafale2 I think it must have been round 2 😂
Actually was round 3 ._.
That’s typical Paul W.S. Anderson throwing half assed fan service in the movie regardless what little sense it makes. Just like the MK2 announcer sound byte saying “Reptile” when Reptile shows up. Makes no sense, but let’s put it in the movie to make the fans of the game cheer and fool them into believing we made a good movie that’s faithful to the source material!
Fan service is stupid if it makes absolutely no sense to the current situation, plot or narrative.
Don’t even get me started on Nightwolf saying “it’s my animality” in Annihilation.....
@@uome20bukz mk2 was more of a bsdm porn movie with all the porn& dominatrix scenes being cutted out

1:57 One of my favorite shots of the film. Great cinematography, atmospheric lighting, soundtrack and also an excellent casting (Robin Shou looks like Liu, and acts really good imo). Let alone that scream, that hand movement and shot design, and obviously the sequence of complete ass whooping that follows. Epic.
As much as I like the reboot, I absolutely love this movie Liu Kang should always be the main character. He is the chosen one. Perfect casting too for Liu Kang and Shang Tsung
2:05-2:30 is straight up badass. That combo Liu kang unleashes is sick
Robin Shou was my Jackie Chan growing up. Thanks to MK I discovered Robin's other movies like Tiger Cage where he fought David Wu. To say Robin is a combat artist would be underselling his talent. I've looked up to him since I was a toddler in 1999. 21 years later and I still find myself in awe in how great his portrayal in each movie was.
100 times better fight scenes than MK 2021
You are dead ass right bro i was so dissapointed
This is out dated, it's nostalgic but the fight scenes are not better 💀

I just want to say there are 3 rounds in mortal kombat and he didn't get touched in the 3rd. Round 2 started when he said you're mine and ended when Liu Kang hit the ground. Cage had 2 flawless victories against Goro.

...the Super Nintendo cut of the movie... (old school fans get the joke)
@@HeroQuestFans Pepperidge Farm remembers. It was always the one thing my Genesis having friend broke my balls about.
@@Batman8657 yep, the old "graphics vs. gore" debate raged on. years later, and maybe it was because of emulation or something, but the snes version seemed to lack combos, it just felt off. I sidestepped the whole thing by getting the dos version, which at the time was the superior choice!
@@HeroQuestFans Everything about the SNES version sucked. The controls were just horrible. Genesis had way better response time (and gore). At least they learned their lesson with MKII.
@@Batman8657 so it wasn't just my imagination? thanks for confirming! I have only ever played MK Snes via emulation and I have always experienced the same issue... the controls feel sluggish and there are no combos. many claimed after the fact that MK sucked that the only reason anyone ever liked it was due to gore, but I disagree, we kept playing because it was good, and that it was "simpler" than SFII was in its favor, after all, most of us were not 27 year old cyber-athletes. impressing your friends/crowds at the arcades with secret moves like fatalities was certainly in its favor as well, but gameplay is huge... back then console games were expensive (consoles affordable, games expensive for kids) and unless you got to try them out in the store or rent (very possible in those days), you were going by screenshots in magazines or the back cover of the box, word of mouth and tv commercials. so a game that LOOKED good, typically got the better marketing PR. the gore did it for the genesis version of course. I have my own gripes with it (no pause feature, fewer animations). the music, while altered from the original, still gives me chills though, very well done rendition. even if the sound hardware was technically inferior, sega based developers knew how to make that thing sing, like few SNES games on their platform could.
2:02 Liu Kang was putting combos together..charging his self up like the video game!! Lol...and thats why he had enough special bar to deliver the fireball!!!....this is the best most accurate video game movie ever!! 💪🏿💪🏿
When Liu said "I am the chosen one" it sounded so much like Matthew Yang King
He did a great job voicing Liu Kang
This is so much more epic than the new movie (new one is alright though but totally missed its mark)
New MK is a disaster besides the first 10 mins.
completely forgettable. This one you can watch over and over.
This is a damn classic. The new MK movie was a cash grab and the only thing interesting in it was Scorpion vs SubZero.
Man I walked out on the new one it was so bad. Talk about not having a soul.
Hollyweird just destroys everything it touches
But hey it actually managed to had a fatality
This tsang sung, no one cant replace him!!
Even if it wasn't a flawless victory, Liu Kang is probably thinking "Who's got the courage to correct me?"
Technically, it WAS a flawless victory. Shang technically knocked him down for Round 2.
This fight scene is better than the new movie alone
It amazes me how he only fell through ONE SPIKE!! 25 years and that still blows my mind LOL
One spike straight through his abdomen, sure it ruptured his stomach and killed him by profuse internal bleeding.
New MK movie made me revisit this old classic and appreciate Robin Shou as Liu Kang. He really did a great job!
the music playing at 0:37 while he’s getting up is so epic fr
The brutality/fatality combo! I love this movie and can’t wait for the new one!
New one never gonna match this one....not even close.
Remember it was round 2. That's why it was a flawless victory.

All these people saying liu kang doesn't know what flawless victory means, but he didn't get touched at all during round 3
Better than 2021 movie
I remember being so hyped when Liu finally used his fire even tho it was hella weak lol
It's more orange lightning than fire.
This movie taught me the best line in life: Save your pity for the weak!
2:41 "Flawless Victory.."
_Dude, you got punched like a hundred times times_
If you set the fight up as having 3 rounds he did get a flawless victory.
The new movie still can’t match the writing, acting’s and tension like in this scene. Musics also way better in this.
New movie was a letdown
The new movie has a different approach, wich I find also enjoyable.
Especially the first part of the film, before they reach the Raiden temple. At this time Sub Zero apparitions are hyper badass and full of tension, almost like in a horror/slasher movie. The music is then minimalistic and suits well with the context.
But I agree, second part of the film is a letdown, no more tension since they transform into avengers lol
Ya know when I commented On the announcement they were making a new mk movie I said it would be an avengers level move since they all had powers and it had the potential of an mcu style universe .
For me the fights were lackluster . They wasted characters and the fights were too short . The director said he was aiming to make the best martial arts movie ever , or something like that. I don’t get how you can apparently have that idea and deliver what they did .
I kinda liked it, I enjoyed the intro too.
But the fights and acting/characters were not on par. The action scenes also lacked .
They have so much potential especially seeing where the games went . All they need is longer fight scenes and not running there and wasting characters .
Liu Kang will forever be my favorite character, this entire movie is still amazing
Still one of the better videogame adaptations, change my mind

dude that fight already happen in the bruce lee movie. Way of the Dragon
When they made the first game, they did try and get Van Damme to do the motion capture for Johnny Cage, but he turned it down. So, they decided to just base the character on him instead
Chuck Norris would have been a terrible Raiden. He might have made a good Kano, though.

When liu kang got back up... THAT was round 2 with shang tsung + flawless victory. Liu kang didn't get hit, shang tsung was getting hit.
2:25 my favorite scene. The symbols crashing and drums, and a big hit.
One thing I did like about this film is that they didn't give Liu Kang, Sonya or Johnny Cage moves that would had been hard to explain. It gave the movie a more natural flow.
I had plenty of reasons to like the new MK movie but this one will always be my favorite, specifically because Robin and Cary make the best Lui Kang and Shang Tsung.
