For those having an issue with the parts hiding behind the white "Layer", make sure when you select all the lines, that you select the box you made also. THEN you use the "Divide" button.
This has been a huge help for a project I'm currently working on, trying to create a 'cutout' effect that will work flawlessly as a vector graphic. Thank you so much!
This was so helpful! I love this effect in design and have been wanted to learn how to do it. This video was very clear and concise. Thank you for sharing this :)
Awesome tutorial, very easy to follow and great results. One small question though, is there any way to hide the shadow on the top shape (in your example it applies the shadow also on the white background box)
If anyone has issue regarding the outer shape not being in proper effect try making the box object before all of the drawings and follow the steps it should work.
Edit: I think I figured it out! Hi! Thank you for this tutorial! I am trying to change the shadow to an inner shadow, but I don´t get what you are doing to achieve it. You hold ctrl (or cmd) to get the white cursor and then press b or e? For me nothing happens.. Is there any way you could help? :)
@@IlliTutorials I also have the same question and the specific point is at 3:10 you say: Select this and .... I can't understand the command you execute to change a shadow to the internal one
@@umamochilaeumsonhoo Hey Nata, now I see whats up. I say control-B, it's paste in the back. However, now using Illustrator CC this doesn't work for me anymore. But it's easy to fix, right click on the smallest shape in the middle and arrange, send to back. That should do it.
I had to go to Pathfinder and Divide to make them into cutout shapes so that the smaller shapes would still be visible when sent back. This worked for the effect but I couldn't find a way to do it that didn't also leave a shadow on the white base
Open the layers and select the layer you want and drag it to where it needs to go. So in this case, we want the darkest layer to be at the bottom of the layers so we drag it until it's the lowest of the layers in the tab. Then we do the same for each layer.
Hey Noemi, sorry that I wasn't clear enough. Could you specify, exactly which inner shadow are you referring to? So after applying the dropshadow, I move the layer to the back with ctrl-B and reverse the order. I'm wondering, did you divide your shape (01:32)?
I think I see whats up. I say control-B, it's paste in the back. However, now using Illustrator CC this doesn't work for me anymore. But it's easy to fix, right click on the smallest shape in the middle and arrange, send to back. Try that, that should do it.
Start again, but when you choose the lines @ 1:33 , make sure you also choose the Box you created @ 0:08. It took me a few times to figure that out. Choose ALL the lines AND the box before you press "Divide".
Do you mean a shadow on the lightest layer on top (onto/off your artboard)? If so, you can draw a rectangle over top of the cutout + light area and select everything, including the box and make clipping mask. Then you won't see the drop shadow off your artboard.
When I divide and ungroup it pairs 2 lines as a group. was making it into compound paths I had to divide like 3 times, and alos like most the last drop shadow is an issue. is the white a background a shape I don't understand how it reverts onto the last shape to be honest.
Hey man when i do this on a text which has been cut by the knife tool it only gives me shadows on x and y. The layers should loook like that in the video which they're not . what can be the problem ?
When you're using the pencil tool and you approach your initial point you'll see the icon change from a pencil with * to a pencil with °. If you let go of the pencil tool when the icon has changed, the shape will close. Otherwise you can either select the shape and press control/command J, which will join both end points with a straight line.
@@IlliTutorials This doesn't work. My Pencil Tool cursor doesn't change when approaching the original point. If I let go of the mouse button or stylus, it just leaves a gap. Also, using CTRL/J creates a straight line when joining the two open points. Possibly a setting in the Pencil Tool options?
@@iraceruk Hi I Racer, if you double click to the pencil tool there is a setting called close paths when ends are within: XX pixels. Check that box. My setting is 15 pixels. That should do it for you!
Hi, thanks for the video, for some reason it is not quite working for me. When I try to send my upper layer to the back, it disappears. I made sure to divide the shapes. Not sure what else I'm doing wrong - have you got any tips? Thank you!
I may be releasing a simplified paper cutout tutorial that might help with that. I'd suggest looking through your layers and moving the layers around until you get the desired effect.

I think he forgot to tell that first you need to draw a rectangle with no stroke and no fill. You should select it together with the other paths and select "divide" and so on the other steps of the tutorial.

you can use inner glow with black color to mimic the effect of inner shadow
yeah ..But in that case we can't shift the direction of inner glow on x y axis ( like in drop shadow )
Exactly, you have more fine tuning with this method.
