  • very fast half assed going through basic functionality of the SMH that has been updated to the version 3.0
    2023 Edit: Please do keep in mind that this is a video that goes through functions of SMH and not an actual animation tutorial, considering how many nuances there is in animation. For basics in animation, I'd suggest to search up "12 principles of animation" on youtube, that should give some ideas. And don't worry about examples being in 2D, 3D, Blender, SFM, GMod or whatever - some animation principles and tricks apply anywhere, it's just the different toolset you'd have to use.

    SMH 3.0 is compatible with your saves from 2.0, however you'd need to save them in the new version if you would like to use the spawning function.
    You also can access your saves by navigating to ...garrysmod\data\smh , so you can backup your saves or move them somewhere else so they won't clog up your save menu.
    Prop effects can also be animated properly now.
    smh_makejpeg and smh_makescreenshot optionally can take a number value, it will make it start rendering from the specified frame. smh_startatone will also be considered.
    When you select an entity, it might not get highlighted with the halo, however it still would be properly selected and keyframes will be recorded on it. I don't quite know why halos stop working.

      hey i have a problem. Every time I play the animation that I do, only the part of the beginning appears but the complete animation does not appear, what am I doing wrong? :(

      well, i couldn't have put up the new version to the public if there wouldn't have been an explanation on how all the new stuff works. although probably there is a need in some "advanced" tutorials about various concepts to help people make animations better

      well, the "making" part would be mostly by Winded, as he developed the thing since the start of times, as I kind of just took over in 2021 as I thought that I could help out and edited some stuffs. + Winded also did the total rewrite of SMH from whatever overengineered stuff it was, so it was easier to edit it, whereas functionally it remained the same!

    THANK YOU for this wonderful tool! I'll admit eltorro64's animation tutorial led me here since he uses stop motion helper
    as his main source of animation control along with ragdoll mover, I was just putting the finishing touches on my silly animation
    when I accidentally clicked a piece of the animation helper tool window that softlocks me D:
    luckily I had JUST saved & I went back here to figure out how to retrieve it & now I get that each individual save has ALL character animations that were done in that timeframe.
    I was able to retrieve my saved animations successfully. I am a beginner animator but I've watched enough gmod & sfm animations to get push & pull. :D

      nice, although do you happen to recall how you got yourself softlocked? is it that occasion where people open save/load/properties window and then open console, which makes it so console and smh windows overlap and don't let you do anything?

      well, tutorials do mostly cover the basics of using the tool, however there's still some more techniques to making more advanced looking animations with it. if you'd like to look into that, when you feel like you're familiar with the tool, you can look up 12 principles of animation, there should be some videos on youtube about these, and you could try to apply some of the principles in your stuff. they still help quite a lot with making good looking animation, both 2D and 3D.

    yo im having an stupid problem when i pose the face and record the keyframes it wont replay and when i go the the keyframe it is all the same but when i animate or record the poses it works

    What ever you do do NOT bind ; to smh menu
    It just locks you into the menu and you have to force shutdown Garry's mod to get out

    idk if the tutorial is too fast for me to process but for some reason I am struggling with the whole “World Keyframes” thing
    I just can’t get the release and press key things to work properly (all I want to do is use particle stuff for like explosions)

      yeah those things are tough to wrap one's head around, as their functionality also may depend on whether the stuff it's meant to activate uses toggle mode or not. is your particle thing set to be toggleable or not?

      good luck! technically you could look into 12 principlies of animation stuff, there's some videos about those in 2D stuff by Alan Becker, and you can apply some of them to any animations really.

    I usually animate with this by recording my animation with a recording software, however there is always some really intense lag whenever I play my animation which makes recording it impossible.
    Is there a fix for this?

      how many entities did you happen to record with smh, and how many keyframes did you record? generally having a lot of stuff in the playback can cause fps drops.

    for some reason when I try to face pose it works but the entity stays with that pose until I change the pose and it will not animate no idea what Im doing wrong

      switch off faceposer or select "ground" with faceposer to make it delesect that entity - faceposer updates face of selected entities every tick so it overrides smh's setting that only does it once per frame switch

      generally with gmod you'll probably need some way to move nonphysical bones then, as long as a model that you use has bones for hair. ragdoll mover and advanced bone tool can do that, and for storing such animation in SMH you'd use "Nonphysical bones" modifier
      don't think i've seen any other models handle hair in any different ways yet

    I seem to have a wierd issue with smh_save preset in that I think my name prevents it from working. My name on steam contains the character "﷽" (Actually it's the only character in my name) and thus doesn't seem to make a save. If i change it to some temp name it saves fine, but even renaming that save file that has the temp name to the steam name I usually use doesn't remedy it either. Any way to fix this?

      Seems like your OS doesn't support those characters? Or you can name them fine like that when browsing files? It could be related also to the characters that gmod's file writing system supports. If you want to use smh_quicksave, then you may need to rename your steam name to something else while you work for now, I'm afraid, but if you use usual saving throught save window, then that wouldn't be needed, although it will take longer, of course

    Quick question, whenever I'm trying to record a frame, I hit the record button and nothing happens, I have the right addons. I have the same keys binded, is there something I'm doing wrong?

      just in case, have you selected an entity (ragdoll, prop) to record stuff onto in the first place? you do it by opening up smh menu and right clicking on an entity you want to record poses of, it should get highlighted by green halo, but sometimes it doesn't work due to some rendering stuff, but it still gets selected

      yeah people generally have some issues with it, so probably in the future there could be more options for these things like toggles and whatnot

    is there a way to transfer keyframes between two same ragdolls. for example i did an shooting animation for a rebel and i need to do like 10 of them and doing that manually would be an huge pain

      spawn offset function should help with that, although i dunno if hl2 guys all share same skeleton, i hope they do, so what you can do is record a guy, save that animation, use spawn offset thing and spawn him around some places you'd need, save that, and then try to apply those saved animations on other rebel/citizen ragdolls, if that makes sense. might not 100% work however

    How do you stop the face from going all weird like when I move it there’s nothing moving but when the face is like messed up and then when I go back it doesn’t change it’s permanently

      i assume that's the thing that happens when you didn't initialize model's faceflexes, sounds scary, but all you do is right click a ragdoll with faceposer before recording it with SMH, so it will set some tf2 faceflexes to be 0.5, as otherwise SMH assumes that they are 0 by default, which messes stuff up. (stuff like jaw flexes on hwm tf2 guys)

      do you still have ragdoll's face selected with the faceposer when you play animation? if so, unselect it by switching off the toolgun or right click somewhere else, faceposer's settings override what smh puts up

      yeah, primarily that's how commands with + work. you can input it manually into console and then press the bind to let go of the menu or playback, however i feel like that would be awkward to do all the time

      1:42 , you only can copy existing stuff on currently selected entity, as there's no keyframe "copy-paste" between different entities.

      steam workshop didn't happen to mount the addon correctly. i recall someone disabling all their addons except for smh and then it started to work, after what all the addons can be enabled back up with no issue

      that's generally a rendering thing, green outline doesn't appear but thing still gets selected, try recording it and it should work

    hey, i'm back. i have a problem with the playback part of SFM. When i hold the key binded to this command, the frame drop will drop really. Yet my device can consistently run GMOD around 60 FPS. The frame rate does not drops when i mess with the timeline manually. Am i the only one having such problem?

      would you happen to have freeze all disabled? also how many keyframes do you have recorded for the playback? i fucked up greatly with optimizing the thing, for now i could suggest enabling freeze all as that should lower the calculations the thing would need to do so it won't need to determine which physbones of ragdoll were frozen or no

      how are you trying to play it, just in case? you did record some frames for entities too? is your playhead at the start of the animation, as playback starts from playhead's position and if you have a lot of frames in framecount, it may be stuck there for a bit as it'll go through empty frames too

      that generally seems to be an issue due to gmod mounting stuff from workshop weirdly. try disabling other addons and see whether it'll start working then

      generally for particles i've seen people move away particle emitter stuff out of the view with 2 frames that do not have gap between them, so thing you want to hide moves instantly away from view (unless you have smooth playback which may make it a bit weird)

      nope, kinect would probably be a pain to polish up, no idea about VR. but probably will just make stuff harder. however, nothing stops you from trying. i guess kinect stuff can be recorded with physics recorder

      there's quite a bunch. out of "essential" stuff, ragdoll mover, standing pose tool and physgun undo are quite a must have, i'd say, and they all are made by Winded. as for the quick selection wheel thing, this edition of radial menu ( steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=265292490&searchtext=radial+menu ), would need some messing around with setting up binds and the tools you want to use yourself, you also can assign console commands to it, like physgun undo, very handy.
      if you're dealing with tf2 guys or the like, there's tf2 paint to color some of the specific cosmetic items in specific tf2 colors, and also easy bonemerge tool to easily attach cosmetics to the guys, although it only works properly if the cosmetic was meant to be on the guy you're merging it to, as using scout's cosmetic on heavy might not quite work.

      no way around that, sadly. generally putting +smh_menu in console would keep it up, until -smh_menu command is given.
      due to how source works with commands with + sign, once you press a bind it will call +smh_menu, for example, and on release it'll call -smh_menu that will close it. some people tried using bindtoggle stuff to no avail. perhaps i could look into making a separate console command for that

      that would require knowing quite a bunch of stuff, posing, fight choreography, timing and all that stuff. if you're just starting off, i'd suggest to start with the basics, you could check out 12 principles of animation which go through some concepts that could be applied to any animation to make it look a bit better, and then try to apply some of those to your stuff. you also could use some reference, like try to animate some stuff like walking from one of those videos where a person walks on youtube, although also do think about how exactly does the stuff move in your reference as to be capable to reproduce some of that stuff you did, and then also make some changes to achieve some sort of animation style that you desire, like cartoony stuff is quite keen on exaggerated movements.

      @@babyboo-ek5qn You do type them in as +smh_menu and +smh_playback, right? Does anything pop up in console when you type in smh in general, like smh_record or so? Could be that gmod workshop didn't properly mount the addon so you may need to disable some other addons to make it work, and it can be random of what you'd have to disable

      @@babyboo-ek5qn Yeah gmod workshop sometimes does that. If you really want some of those addons, you can just find smh in its workshop folder and unpack its .gma and put it into gmod's addons folder, then it should work I think without any issues with whatever addons you'd enable

      probably steam workshop messed up and didn't mount the addon correctly. try to disable all other addons you have through addon menu in gmod and check if SMH will work if it's the only thing enabled. generally that seemed to help some people, although don't think it will be a 100% fix. if SMH will work after that, it should work properly once you enable other addons i think, as it's not inherently a conflict thing

      well, did you have some animation recorded there to play in the first place, and was the playhead put at the beginning of it so it'll play from there? also make sure that don't animate physbones option is turned off, or else ragdolls won't play their animations

      if you're doing a video recording, then holding down +smh_playback bind will keep repeating whole animation.
      otherwise you also can use shift+left click to select multiple keyframes that you need and copy them forward to make that animation repeat, if that makes sense
