I had a GT for six years and did loads of mods to it. From factory they were skittish but the engine had sooo much lag that went it came on boost it was like flicking a switch, used to properly shock passengers. Getting rid of the standard Pierburg boost controller and using a bleed valve smoothed this out but made it more thirsty. In the end I had coilovers, Abarth kit, SEB2, exhaust, filter, buckets, stripped out, 16 inch OZ wheels, proper pocket rocket and used to get a lot of attention.....especially in yellow. Great fun and sold mine to buy an Alfa 156, beautiful but too normal after a barking Punto GT....wish I could have stuck it in a garage now....
The first generation Punto is one of those cars that can genuinely get me a little emotional, even though I've never driven one. Let me give you some context... Growing up, my dad bought a red Punto ELX 75, 4 door just before I was born. From what he has told me, he was driving a Skoda Target before the Punto, as that was my grandfather's car, and the car I think he learnt to drive in (but I'm not 100% sure on that). He clearly loved the Punto; whether it was because it was the first car he bought with his own money, or because it was a great car, I don't know. But he'd use it to take me and my sister to school, to get my mum to/from work, to drive himself to/from work... It wasn't a particularly amazing car in anything, but I recall liking how it looked so much sleeker than other similar cars from its time. Sometimes, me and my dad would wash the car, and, God the exterior was shining after we were done with it. We even used to notice people around the neighborhood having all sorts of Puntos at the time; from another "cat lady" (she used to have a fair amount of cats, it's a long story...) in the same block of flats with a beaten-up white SX 55 4-door, to some neighbors further down the street with a yellow GT (not sure which generation), who also had a yellow Fiat Coupe at some point, I believe... Anyhow, all of that, is to say that I'd really love to drive a Punto some day (any one of them, but especially one of the GT variants), but, since there's not many in Australia, I doubt it is going to happen any time soon... That generation of cars may not have been very fast by today's standards (not that I would know, since I'm currently driving my dad's old 2004 Honda Jazz VTi), but they must have been a blast even then... With only ~1100kg to move around, 140 hp should have been plenty...
My friend had one, not as many mods as this one but he let me drive it and I was smitten, since then iv'e had seat turbos, Audi turbos and Subaru wrx's, the little punto made a turbo lover, will never forget it :)
the punto is a good car, from the 50 hp 1.1 liters, all the way to the 1.4 TURBO 130hp the same could be said about the Mk2 (i have a Mk2 5 door 1.2 8v 60hp) nice review btw! loved it😄

I LOVE this. My first car was a first gen Punto - base S trim 1.1, 55 horsepower. I couldn't agree more on character - even my car had LOADS of it. I'd love to get a GT like this one day.
Miss the one I had loads. Mine was also 220bhp but I used the garret gt25r for better spool although it was still quite laggy. A seb4.1 chip, front mount, injectors, fuel pump etc. Mine was fully stripped out with a decatted magnex exhaust. The first time I heard this at full throttle definitely brought a smile to my face. 😀
I had one that someone before me did a wonderful job tuning the supension (aswell as the rest). He went and used adjustable SPAX suspension like a partial coilover and sticky tyres. Its the one car i wish i could find and buy back P818 HLS.
In years fron 2003 to 2010,I had 7 (!!!) Punto GT (but also many others cars...). it is a nice car with excellent performance, but leaves much to be desired as it is road-holding. The shell is too soft, and when driving sportingly, it becomes difficult to control. There seems to be no communication between the front and rear axles, with the rear that loads like a spring and if it runs it is difficult to shoot (unlike, for example, the 205 GTI and 106 sports ...). On the other hand, brakes hard, the engine is really powerful and has very high performance, to be a 1.4L even if supercharged. One of the ones I had was heavily worked out:pistons C.P.S.,Turbonetics, plus injectors, revised electronics and with 3 maps selectable from the cockpit.had measured 240hp and as a maximum speed it was well over 250 km / h! It had revised suspension throughout and the road-holding had improved, but if you decided to drive it hard, it required quick reflexes and square balls.
