I know a few tow operators who will take stereos, wheels, other random whatnots. From abandoned breakdowns, outright shitty. As if the down-on-luck owners didn't have a bad enough trip.
You could, in theory, still charge a diagnostic fee. You determined what was wrong. Also, you can access the networks from the DLC (I use a breakout box which also shows power and chassis/network grounds). Finally, some of these corollas did not come with ABS in the first place (you would normally see a bunch of brake line in that area.). I have a 2006 Matrix 4WD which is pretty much the same vehicle (1.8L 1ZZ-FE).
Oh I charged my fee. Yea second one this week with no comm and no abs module. The other was a Jeep liberty 4wd. Forget the year but no abs just a block.
Personally dealt with situations similar to yours, and my experiences and approach to the diagnosis would have led me a different path. When I hooked up the scanner and unable to communicate my first thought would be check the dlc/pcm fuse. 9 out of ten times it’s blown for whatever reason. When checking for power at fuse with key on and there is no power to fuse at all, my immediate concern would be check to see if pcm is plugged in and no corrosion. These are simple checks before going in to deep saving you time and frustration. Those checks would take ten mins or so. It’s really unfortunate what happen to her and slim chance tow yard will admit to wrong doing since most of them claim no responsibility to vehicles in the yard. An 04, best case scenario is get used.
@Cjm7283 you are right thats my issue when out in the field i always rush and miss the simple things. now dont get me wrong i get there in the end but sometimes i waste my own time. thanks for watching and commenting
Unfortunately you jumped into a rabbit hole when you assumed the 5v was taking down the network . You should have checked the network with the scope first thing to give yourself a diagnostic direction. Next would be power and ground to the PCM . Perhaps check the 5v but when there's no voltage being supplied by pcm it takes you back to powers and grounds. That would have been where you discovered the missing computer .
@keltecshooter thanks for watching and commenting dont knock the rabbit hole im good at those. i do it often. but your comment is literally what i did. the bus lines had nothing on them so started to look for the pcm after i saw no 5 volts. i chased 5 volts first because why not. if i had 5 volts and no comm then id be dealing a dlc port issue. and some other no crank issue. ive run into it so that's just how I'm used to doing it. im faster that way. now as far as the pcm checking powers and grounds i couldn't because i couldn't find it. the connectors were shoved up behind everything at first i pulled them down to show you all. and thats when i started to get all screwy in my head for no reason. but its a video i edit most of it out becasue it be 1.5 hours long and boring. i appreciate your feedback though im always open to new approaches to be quicker and help someone young learn more im good with making mistakes and posting them because most people make it out that they dont mess up.
No start condition first turn the key on and see the engine light on, if not lit then check the Ecm fuse, if fuse is ok grab a voltmeter check the 5 volts reference on the TPS if don't see 5 volts then check the main relay and the ECM .it's only takes less than 10 mins.
You did ok. When equipment is running good trust your tools and make it a good idea to answer the question how something is not supplied. Like spark then you can ask why im not getting power in the ignition system or air bag system. The air bag code might of had a no comms error in that area. You should be happy you found it and charged and offered to order computer to add more to make a little money. Gas is not cheap. Great videos.
@laurielammi3996 I like being angry no im kidding i dont. i hate when people take advantage of customers that's why i was angry and no communication. i never knew it sat at a tow yard for weeks. when diagnosing you need every bit of info and when its held back it doesn't help at. but the customer is much older and a bit sick so they didnt know really

@arthurfricchione8119 Hey, thanks for being a subscriber and thanks for watching. Yeah unfortunately, who knows there was evidence of someone being underneath the rear seat messing with things. I do have to say thanks for actually watching the video and understanding what we were doing. The main problem was that the PCM was missing so there was no way to be able to check powers and grounds at the PCM until once I found out that the connectors were hitting somewhere and someone was doing something shady. So again I applaud you for actually watching it and taking a time to make a nice comment compared to the keyboard warrior above.
@mbabazijohnson6325 Hey thanks for that!! I use AllData I have the pro version basically for every vehicle around. If your just the DIY they have DIY one where you can get the info for your personal car I believe

@RATCHETMAN1001 Yeah, who knows definitely someone was in there. That’s what I told her at the end. Also, is she needs to call around and figure out what she can but chances are she won’t get anywhere and we’re just gonna have to get her a new PCM and go from there thanks for watching.
now i can truefully say i have heard and seen it all. the whole time i was thinking you somehow put the wrong vin and the year was off and you would find it somewhere else
@DependableAutoTruck i thought that as well i edited most of it out but i kept getting annoyed because i was getting so much conflicted info from alldata
@MarkDavisson-e3h Does anyone watch the video at all??? How hard is it to see that I can’t check for powers and ground when the pcm is not where they said it should be and the harness is hidden on purpose. So how do I check powers and ground when I can’t see it. So I went back to find if I had the wrong vehicle selected in my information system when I found out I didn’t that is when I found the connectors and determined the pcm was gone!

@TheVigilantEye77 I do in every case. This case she got charged the full diagnosis fee. Even though the pcm is gone. I’m sure it’ll run when it’s back. She said after the accident it still ran she pulled over to the side of the road. Only when they towed it back to her place did it not run.
@@3TsMOBILEAUTOMOTIVEREPAIR when they had to tow it back that's a big clue you never had going in. they probably figured it was gunna be thiers because the old lady wouldnt come up with the money for towing and storage
