Just upgraded from a 2008 Scion XB, which lasted me 16 years to a 2023 Corolla Cross. I bought the budget model that came with plastic hubcaps, no roof-rack and no light signals on the mirrors. However, it has cream colored seats and I threw on some chrome and black Indy rims. Added some chrome trims on the handles and mirrors and I gotta say, it looks twice the price. Elegant ride too. I am not a fan of the Eco and steer assist modes. Where I live, the roads can be chaotic and quick reflexes are a must. Glad I can deactivate them but not totally. Other than that, the ride is really smooth almost like flying over the road on wings. A+.
I rented one in Cape Town- 1.8 l hybrid model with consumption at below 5 l / 100 km even with brisk driving. This is realistically all the car most people really need.
I'm glad the review highlighted the issue of having a smaller gasoline tank. Hybrid battery has to go somewhere and it looks like the gas tank was shrunk to give space to a portion of the hybrid battery. Will be an annoyance for sure to some.
400 mile range is about 15 miles less than the Subaru Crosstrek, main competitor... Crosstrek has a 16.6 gallon tank. I think. Let that sink in, it's the capacity and the efficiency TOGETHER that count, so you just need to comfortable with filling up a bit closer to zero but remembering that you are still MILES from running out of fuel.
Another downside is the back seats that fold 60/40, that's as cheap as it gets! Why not 40/20/40 or at least a ski hatch in the middle seat. Even some regular non luxary brands had that 20 years ago and they didn't even mentioned it, poor.
Great review: a couple of corrections/points: 1) Awesome that you pointed out what every other reviewer has missed: you can shift with the gear lever, you don’t need paddle shifters (I prefer using the lever, since I drive stick) 2) The SE *does* have paddle shifters, standard. Only the S comes without them. Really appreciate the sound check and your website with the master list. Would love to know what the 2023 vs 2024 Subaru Crosstrek sounds are, since Subaru has done a lot of marketing on how the new Crosstrek is more quiet.
So glad to hear you're utilizing the website sound level readings! It was quite the task to get them all on there but we finally finished this week 😅 A 2024 Crosstrek review should be coming soon!
I wish they would just make a smaller version of the rav 4, it's too big for me but the corolla cross just seems like a huge step down in everything, not just size.
i have the corolla cross with 2.0 gas engine. i use extreme driving style to get 5.0L/100km, which is 47 MPG.(i think i beat most Cross hybrid drivers lol) i never go over 100km/h, seldom let the engine go over 2500rpm when accelerating and hyper mill when ever possible. so l smile when i see the gas pump, and its a different kind of fun to squeeze for MPG. i fill up around 8-9 gallons which gives me about 375-420 mile range, so i don't feel you need to constantly stop for gas.
@@namvet1968 If you want to get to a business meeting in a different town without having to shave again once you arrive, you may want to drive above 100 km/h, which is 60 mph ;)
Has anyone heard of the engine stalling? There were several reports of this with the 2023 model. I did a test drive recently and the brake was quite stiff. At one point, i did a hard brake and heard a sound as if for a quick second there the brake was stuck. I’m really annoy at the stop and go. I didn’t know it has that feature until it kicks on during test drive.
FWIW, I’m seeing 61.8 cubic inches with the seats down when I check volume specs online. Which makes sense, the back seat is smaller than the RAV4, it wouldn’t make sense to get up to the same storage capacity as the larger model.
Just got my black xse hybrid 2 weeks ago had to wait only 3 weeks, they tried selling me on a white one but I told them I wasn’t in a rush even though black color is sought after
We agree. Unfortunately, we don't have any control over what they give us and apparently most people prefer plain black interiors vs lighter colored ones
fully optioned, here in Seattle, the build comes to $35,500. For $7K more (I know that sounds like a lot but when you factor in the doable increase in the monthly payment) you can get an almost fully loaded RAV4 that gets just a couple mpg less but a bigger tank equalling a longer driving range. I would also assume that the resale might be a wee higher with the RAV. I drove both and ended up buying a fully optioned RAV4 SXE. This is a Great review!
I think people looking here mainly are not wanting to pay the $7000 more or they would be looking at the car you already have. Not sure why your would come here to post about a more expensive car. Bragging or a dealer trying to encourage bigger sale.
Then again for a few more $, you could get an NX hybrid which has a higher status label and better service :). Plus the Rav4 is going to be replaced with a newer model soon and the current model will look dated. Enjoy your car. I am just messing with your analogy.
I actually saw the paddle shifters at 7:12, 7:20, and 7:44. Now that I've used them in my Crosstrek, I search them out in other cars I'm considering for the near future.

I also am the only person in the car 99% of the time, so there is no extra weight from a passenger. Maybe that has something to do with it ?
At 37 mpg and a 10.6 gallon tank your range should be well over 300 miles which is average range for most cars. I get about 400 miles per fill up on mine.
