Yellow and white: lighter complexion Blue and brown: darker complexion The general idea is that you mix more of two and less of the other two when trying to achieve a lighter or darker colour.
This video has inspired me to get right back into painting and trusting my own process! You are a blessing. Seriously thank you so much. You have no idea what you just re-sparked right back into me!
Just want to let you know that I really appreciate this video because I know that if we want to learn lessons from artists, we have to pay for it which I totally respect and understand. So I'm very grateful that artists like you would take so much time and so much effort to put up a helpful video like this for us to learn for free and once again thank you sooooo much!!
I know you already mentioned it in the video but can you do a video in detail about what you need to get for a beginner for oils? I'm still unsure about what I need and don't need. Beautiful painting xx
Niamh Brady I’ve just started and I have : Odourless paint thinner Varnish (optional) Oil graduate paints by Daler Rowney Acrylic Gesso Watercolour paper Brushes You can also get linseed oil and canvases but this has been working pretty well. I don’t have a palette for oils yet so I’ve been using plastic wallets x I already do watercolour so I found it very efficient just to get gesso and paint it on watercolour paper as the paper is quite thick so the paint doesn’t cause it to warp and bend
You learn, practice, grow. Talent is widely overrated in the artistic community. Oftentimes the ones who become the best artists are the ones who put in the work and time to get better rather than relying on talent alone. Even talent runs out without spending time learning and exercising knowledge. Skill is something that can be acquired if you want it badly enough. So don't feel discouraged! :)
I love your demonstrations. I understood, but the point you made about keeping an eye on the technical 3D aspect keeps it all together for me. I also like how you keep it loose. Thank you so much.
I am not really into artsy types of things but just by watching your videos it makes me want to do it. It looks relaxing but fun at the same time. Love your videos and keep up the good work :)
She is great to watch and to listen too. I recommend giving sketching a try if you feel even a slight interest. I have recently started attending a class and have started doing extra sketches and watercolours outside class (no oils yet!) and will adivce you that it is a learning process: nobody is just a good artist 'right out of the box'. I look at one of my portrait paintings from even a few weeks ago (a picture I saw in Time magazine) and I am slightly embarrassed looking at it now when I compare it to a more recent sketch which means I have progressed over a few weeks. Try even sketching an eye : but think of it just as an object, not as a preconceived 'this is what an eye looks like'. That approach works for just about everything I think. Go on give it a try! It can be very satisfying.
I was just thinking about if I should start oil painting some time but I was hesitating and then you went and said it’s not really expensive and encouraged the audience it put a smile on my face
I'm really glad you posted this. I've had a really horrible birthday and at nearly 8:30 at night this video is the first thing I've actually been excited about.
Im seriously glad to have an amazing mentor like you who inspires me to express my views through this incredible way of art. Your oil painting tricks and tips show the beautiful concern you have for the growing oil painters. I seriously thank God and you for all of this. God bless you! ❤😊
I love how calm you are about art As a young artist whenever I watch other art videos I feel like they always have black or white, no grey, there’s no middle ground as if their technique is the only right technique which really intimidates me and makes me feel like a crap artist because I’m not using their way. Thank you so much for being calm and helpful
YES!!! I NEEDED this. Because I am starting to get into oil painting and painting "realistic" portraits of people. And I'm struggling, so this is a HUGE help, thank you. :)
As far as i have seen, you are the greatest artist I have found. I am much of a black and white with charcoal but this inspires the colours in me. Thank you
1.) Approximately how long have you been doing art? 2.) How long have you been working with oil paints? 3.) How long did this painting take to make IRL?
This is a great video. I just subscribed to your channel. Since graduating art school I've been so burnt out on painting, but you've inspired me to start again. Thank you so much. Your work is amazing!
You are an amazing teacher. Not only with your painting talent, but your ability to give small direct instruction with a voice that is easy to follow. Thank you for the video!
Omg. Your job is wonderful, U have your own way to express the art, even if was based in realistic pictures, and that way let me without air. Thank u for share this with us.
I'm happy I found this channel. You're very helpful for us beginners who are still strugling where to start in painting. You're advice is practical and easy to follow. Other artists would ask for fees to get the info we need. But yours are free and elaborate. I'm broke, so I'm fortunate to watch your vids. Thank you.
You make it look so effortless! Do you have any tips on how to stop blending? Like I have a problem with trying to seamlessly blend everything so it all ends up just looking the same and very artificial, almost like it's animated
same. i keep practicing and i improved a lot! to make realistic, be patient and restrain yourself. the more you try to work it, the more you are likely to mess it up! and keep comparing with the ref, use a wide range of colours and use your sense of shadows! all the best
You are indeed very talented and a blessing. You have re-ignited my interest in doing portraits. I have been doing so many abstracts and paint pouring techniques that I didn’t feel comfortable trying to get back into portraits. I’m going to the same subject your doing, so I can copy your paint mixes step by step. Layering from light to dark makes so much sense. The way you teach, I think someone can actually learn how to paint just by copying you. This will give me the confidence to do more and even develope my own process. Thankyou so much! Daria. 👍
I'm gobsmacked. That eye is so realistic and with so few oil colours. Incredible. Thank you so much for this great tutorial and your advice. Much love and God bless you. Susan xxxx🎨❤❤❤❤💕💕🤗🤗🎨🙏🙏🙏🙏

Ты такая молодец. Обожаю твои работы и твой стиль. ето супер
Your brushes are so thin. How do you wash/clean them so they stay sharp and don't fray?
probably with lukewarm to warm water and then placed into a plastic cover. a lot of paint brushes are covered i think
You should clean your brushes with soap. That helps keep the brushes soft and in good shape.
@@Vivcsi you cant really do that with oil paint.. youll need some other sort of liquid to clean it out.
- ̗̀ moonchild ̖́- I didn’t know that... Thank you for telling us :)
They might fray. But the paint pushes the paint brushes hair down making it look like it not fraying. It's inevitable.
