Linda Cook John Cook commenting. I have a comment somewhere here. You saw Arlo two weeks ago? I saw him in 82 ~ approximately. I love Arlo Guthrie. Funnier than Jimmy Buffett. No, Arlo and Jimmy are different. Both funny Arlo Guthrie is storyteller and short songs. Check his fbi story.
A truly underrated artist. Had his moment in the 60s, then forgotten, except on Thanksgiving. But I've been listening ever since. An American treasure.
I just saw Arlo in a solo concert two weeks ago and I hoped he'd do this song so I cold yell out "Hail to the inch". He is definitely carrying on the storyteller tradition. Thanks for posting this!

My brother and I were at one of Arlo's concerts, (can't remember when, can't remember where, (maybe the Gibson Theater) and he played this version) I've tried to recall it every time I sing this song.
I have had the good fortune to see Arlo twice live and appreciate his way of viewing the world through his songs. Thanks for adding this video. Made my day!

I love this song like breath itself, but I never heard Arlo do it till now! Arlo, thank you so much! Especially for adding the word "mulch" to the lyrics. Mulch is how Mother Nature fertilizes, every time.
He is such a huge musical talent and so funny! I got a "Cameo" thing from him because I am so depressed. It was less than a minute long, but he chased my blues away for a precious moment with his humor. A giant of a man.
This has become my favorite version pf this song. Became reintroduced to Arlo just this year by an old friend. He is funny, talented and a true performer. The last verse completes this true classic which will endure through time! Congrats, Arlo !
you know Arlo I have been following you for years and years and so has of my husband and he wanted me to sing from Alice's Restaurant Amazing Grace and your voice is so awesome so I did thank you very much for a touch of moment amen

@@guthriesfirstson2630 I garden and love this song. My lady and I have seen Arlo in concert 4 or 5 times. The best was at the Woodstock (Illinois) Opera House. Just a a few weeks back had the pleasure of meeting Arlo after a concert. Joan Baez was there as well as Ramblin' Jack Elliot and Wavy Gravy. All four, together, made a memorable photo and autographs to boot! Won't forget that day, that's for sure! Cool folks!
My favorite entertainer of all times and I had so many chances to meet him in Vero and even when he was in Texas in 2005 or 6 doing a concert and I never made it. UGH!! What a performance this was! Just great!
I ♥ Arlo - I was lucky enough to see him perform the Alice's Restaurant Revisited - if you haven't heard this new version you are missing out! This is my favorite version of the Garden Song too ;-)

love listening to Arlo Guthrie singing a song that was originally written and sung by Pete Seeger and then John Denver when he was on Sesame Street !!! ----------- Arlo always has a story to go along with his version of the song !!! -------------- Arlo Guthrie songs and stories never get old !!!
No need to be sorry. You find him funny. Get this! I find him PROFOUND! Honest. These are words to live by... instructions for life. I can't tell you how many times I refer to this song... for my garden, my body, my mind, my spirit, society, our mother Earth. AND he cracks me up too. I love his sense of humor.
Arlo: We went to Summer Music Camp together in 1962 in the Berkshires. What an incredible summer at a moment in history that you and I will always remember. I want to acknowledge the wonderful influence of your wonderful, talented, and loving mother -- Marjorie. We were just young teenagers. However it was a formative experience for all of us. It is wonderful how you developed into an artist. As you could remember you could hardly sing in those days. What a difference a few years made! Thank you for your music and work in reminding us all - as did your great father the basis of American democracy.
Arlo touches of people who hate gardens. There are people who hate gardens. In 1976 my neighbor come over towards the fence. The first thing he said to me he hated people who had gardens. Guess what? The second week of July 1976 a stranger had come over to my residence. It was the town inspector. He stated that someone reported me for having a garden. He checked the garden and told me there was nothing wrong. I knew it was my neighbor who had a lot of time on his hands to report. The inspector had nothing else to do but to come over my place to check the condition of my garden. During those years I had to watch myself. This S.O.B. neighbor was also finding fault with other neighbors as well. It was not long after they moved. It was a blessing.
Sure needed that . Had a good laugh and a few tears. Just came off fb, which is very depressing, full of republican and christian right hate and vitriol, and now I don't feel so bad. Gonna listen to some more Arlo, and thank you for sharing.
What's funny is Arlo is a registered Republican. He says that the world has plenty of Democrats like him and what's needed is more Republicans like him. And yet again, my hat's off to Arlo for making a whole lot of sense and doing so with a delightful tune.
I saw him onstage right around this same time, and at that performance he got sidetracked by the lyric about the crow. "Crow's got his hungry eye on me.... How come he's not lookin' at what's in the garden?" And it led to a new verse explaining how crows knees are skinny and only bend one way, and that would be the best way to incapacitate a crow that tried to eat you.
If this song (and story) doesn't immediately get you smiling and laughing, you don't have a pulse! (I also liked John Denver's version with The Muppets.)

I don't think this is the best recording of Garden Song. In general I would say that the one that made it onto Precious Friend is better. But Arlo's discussion on this one (despite being anti metric :-)) and the last verse makes it absolutely worth it. I think everyone has felt like that last verse, the first year or two they started gardening. Especially the first year they grew zucchini.
Arlo is sharp, but he’s also immensely lovable. ❤

The great, under-appreciated, melodic, hilarious & deeply idealistic Arlo Guthrie .

Inch by inch, row by row, gonna make this garden grow
Work the soil and the slow 'till we make it fertile ground
Inch by inch, row by row, God bless these seeds I sow
Mars warm them from below, 'till the rain comes tumbling down
Digging frost, crushing stone, Gonna make this world our own
Fertilize it with our bones, Put our life into the land
Mirrors shine, comets fall, Mars awakens at our call
Lots of work, but worth it all for a planet made by hand
Inch by inch, row by row, gonna make this garden grow
Work the soil and the snow 'till we make it fertile ground
Inch by inch, row by row, God bless these seeds I sow
Mars warm them from below, 'till the rain comes tumbling down
Mars is dry, and awful cold, and the soil is awful old
Superoxides won't unfold 'till you talk to them just right
But we endure, we persist, old Mars just can't resist
Life works like an alchemist with water, air and light
Inch by inch, row by row, gonna make this garden grow
Work the soil and the slow 'till we make it fertile ground
Inch by inch, row by row, God bless these seeds I sow
Mars warm them from below, 'till the rain comes tumbling down
And the rain will fall on Mars, and the crops will grow, and Martians will gather and sing the old songs, and remember the people who created them, and the people who preserved them and carried them to new worlds, along with Earth's other seeds.
