Dave, I don't know if you will see this comment, but I hope that you will. I have six children whose ages range from 12 - 32, and I have sung this song to every one of them. My third child loved this song SO much that he would ask me to sing it over and over again at bedtime. Strangely, he called it the "Peach Song," although no peaches are ever mentioned....Perhaps a peach tree is what he wanted to plant in his garden. This son of mine is now married with two little girls of his own, and he sings this song to them. Thank you for such a sweet song to pass on from generation to generation. Before this moment, I had never heard you sing the song. What a gentle and beautiful voice you have! I think that this is my favorite rendition, and why shouldn't it be. The words came from your soul. God bless you, and thank you!
I sang this song to my kids at bed time - used to think it was about gardening, but I think now it is a metaphor about nurturing and growing the next generation. Love this version!
Some time about 1978/79 I was browsing the folk bins in a store in NH. I had never heard of Dave Mallett but something told me that I would never regret buying it. If only every intuition I had was as good as that one.
i too sang this to my kids and loved every incarnation of it we heard...one christmas trying to finish my knitting in time for the big day, i even paraphrased it to make a new verse..... inch by inch row by row gotta make this sweater grow....
My dad was a heavy-duty gardener. At his funeral I had this song, and "Home Grown Tomatoes" played. With this song there were lots of tears. With HGT there was laughter.
Wonderful song and rendition done by his own writer, Dave Mallet. I fell in love with his gem THE GARDEN SONG when I visited the United Kingdom in 1988 and never stopped to hear it out since then. Such a therapeutic song about a simple garden we all would love to have and keep.
I had the pleasure of interviewing David just before he had the two-night live-recording concerts at the Chocolate Church in Bath in November 1980. I remain a fan to this day.
Great song! And, talk about an All Star cast...Dave, Mark O'Connor, Jerry Douglas and Brent Mason, not to mention the other fine musicians and talented sound/recording folks. A true gem!
@DragonReborn886 John Denver was a great performer and he certainly deserves a lot of credit for making this song well known. I will only say that Dave's performance makes me believe that he not only knows what it's like to till a vegetable garden by hand, but has a passion for it. I don't hear that in anyone else's.
Several of this played this at one of our grandkid's birthday parties. I really listened to the words in new ways as I practiced. Beautiful sentiments translated to music!
I think of this as the Homesteaders' Hymn. More and more people are going back to the land and the old ways. Some never left. My homestead will be named with a line from this song.
Wonderful! I've seen Dave Mallett perform at the Common Ground Fair in Unity, ME - it's a really cool agricultural fair that features primarily organic and natural goods that are made or processed in Maine. Dave truly has a lovely voice, and yes, I have to agree with the others who say even though other singers have done a lovely job with his song, the songwriter himself does it best. :)
Thankyou to Dave for writing this song. If it had not been written, one less song would have been part of John Denver's reportoire, and it was through listening to John singing it that I decided to learn it.
Recorded by many, but no one does it like David Mallett. I had the privilege to shoot some video of him doing this song at Noel Stookey's studio back at the end of the 70s. The song had been around just a little while and I don't think he ever imagined its elegance would be such a major part of his musical legacy.
One of timeless pearls of beautiful music being sung all over this planet by these who love music and nature. I think this tune belongs to all that love their gardens and magic of planting, seeding and admiring plants grow. Thanks.
Tommy Makem and Liam Clancy (RIP both) had a huge hit in Ireland with 'The Garden Song' c1980. They gave it a great Irish folk and traditional feeling 🙂
MY FAVORITE.....we need more songs like this these days during tough times. Listen to the words.......a great message.....Inch By Inch we can do it. !!!
Beautiful. A song by a songwriter with a passion for growing vegetables, and one by a songwriter with a passion for eating :) I've head Susanna Clark comment that all of Guy's true love songs are about food.
I learned this song from Pete Seeger & Arlo Guthrie albums decades ago. I found myself singing it this morning on the drive to work and had to come find the video for my 15 month old daughter to watch. We usually live around LA in a condo, but we're with her grandparents for some months where they have rice fields and a large vegetable garden. She loves the garden & (am I projecting myself?) seems to love this song. Thanks!
I'm trying to play The Garden Song on my ukulele (which I'm learning to play in retirement). I've always loved this song since the first time I heard David sing it in Mpls. at the Coffee House Extempore back in the 70's. I remember meeting him and always thought he had (has) a great voice.
A lot of people take up gardening when they retire. I wonder if that's because when you garden, you remember that nothing lasts forever, but there are still beautiful things. At least that's what Leonard Nimoy said right before he died.
One day, people who are turning Mars into a new home for Earthlife will sing it this way: Inch by inch, row by row, gonna make this garden grow Work the soil and the slow 'till we make it fertile ground Inch by inch, row by row, God bless these seeds I sow Mars warm them from below, 'till the rain comes tumbling down Digging frost, crushing stone, Gonna make this world our own Fertilize it with our bones, Put our life into the land Mirrors shine, comets fall, Mars awakens at our call Lots of work, but worth it all for a planet made by hand Inch by inch, row by row, gonna make this garden grow Work the soil and the slow 'till we make it fertile ground Inch by inch, row by row, God bless these seeds I sow Mars warm them from below, 'till the rain comes tumbling down Awful dry, awful cold, and the soil is awful old Superoxides won't unfold 'till you talk to them just right But we endure, we persist, old Mars just can't resist Life works like an alchemist with water, air and light Inch by inch, row by row, gonna make this garden grow Work the soil and the slow 'till we make it fertile ground Inch by inch, row by row, God bless these seeds I sow Mars warm them from below, 'till the rain comes tumbling down And the rain will fall on Mars, and the crops will grow, and Martians will gather and sing the old songs, and remember the people who created them, and the people who preserved them and carried them to new worlds, along with Earth's other seeds. Because Octavia Butler was right: It is the destiny of Earthlife to take root among the stars.
Wow this song made me want to go out to the back yard and til up a bunch of dirt. Dig with my hand I big hole and crawl in it and pull the dirt over me
Great to hear from you Hugh! Thank you for producing the finest music program ever broadcast! I had a large (but not complete) collection recorded off-air on VHS. A few years back I converted all of it to DVD (bought a DVD recorder mostly for that task.) That's the source of this clip. Do the original tapes still exist? Any chance that material could be released on DVD? You should be able to contact Dave through davidmallett-dot-com
As with many song writers/ artists, they do many versions of any song they create. This is only one. Check out the version Mr mallet did (original) on his inches and miles recording and see if that isn't better than any version of this song bar none, by the original aritist himself eh? Try it. You'll see.
That's a shame, you are missing out on some really good music...but I respect that music is a very personal thing, and what appeals to one may not appeal to another.
john denver's version is my favorite, but of course you have to give proper respect to the original writer, Im just not a fan of his country twang myself.

What a pleasure to hear the songwriter himself sing it.
I consistently revisit this prayer of a song
I sang this song to my kids at bed time - used to think it was about gardening, but I think now it is a metaphor about nurturing and growing the next generation. Love this version!

I KNOW !!
i too sang this to my kids and loved every incarnation of it we heard...one christmas trying to finish my knitting in time for the big day, i even paraphrased it to make a new verse..... inch by inch row by row gotta make this sweater grow....
NOT a "religious" song, but one of most deeply spiritual songs ever written
My dad was a heavy-duty gardener. At his funeral I had this song, and "Home Grown Tomatoes" played. With this song there were lots of tears. With HGT there was laughter.
John Denver covered both songs so beautifully.
As s Master Gardener - My Favorite Song...
So it truly boggles me that someone, even in jest, could give this a thumbs down. Seriously you have to have no heart and no ear.
I was just thinking the same thing. Sad.
They are Idiots
And it makes you think some People have no soul...
Wonderful song and rendition done by his own writer, Dave Mallet. I fell in love with his gem THE GARDEN SONG when I visited the United Kingdom in 1988 and never stopped to hear it out since then. Such a therapeutic song about a simple garden we all would love to have and keep.
What a set of pipes. Wonderful song. Thanks Mr. Mallett.
How absolutely beautiful!! 😊💖💖
I had the pleasure of interviewing David just before he had the two-night live-recording concerts at the Chocolate Church in Bath in November 1980. I remain a fan to this day.
If you write a song and it gets covered by Pete Seeger and the Muppets, you wrote a damn fine song
Great song! And, talk about an All Star cast...Dave, Mark O'Connor, Jerry Douglas and Brent Mason, not to mention the other fine musicians and talented sound/recording folks. A true gem!
I Was A Dairy Farmer, Hard Work, This Song Reminds Me Of My Days On The Farm. Gosh I Miss My Farm".
im 20 and i sing then when im workin all the time. gotta slow the tempo down a little when im milking cows pulsators keep it on track for me
My husband misses his cattle farm!
the best songs are often the simplest, what a great example, beautifully written and performed, we miss you Dave, thanks for posting em
@DragonReborn886 John Denver was a great performer and he certainly deserves a lot of credit for making this song well known. I will only say that Dave's performance makes me believe that he not only knows what it's like to till a vegetable garden by hand, but has a passion for it. I don't hear that in anyone else's.
Check out Dr Patrick Quillin’s version. He grows n Cali
@Lord Farquaad: I'm the Gingerbread Man! Dave Mallet 🎶💙 Just learned that! I used to think it was written by Arlo Guthrie
Several of this played this at one of our grandkid's birthday parties. I really listened to the words in new ways as I practiced. Beautiful sentiments translated to music!
❤loving this! Need this now!
I think of this as the Homesteaders' Hymn. More and more people are going back to the land and the old ways. Some never left. My homestead will be named with a line from this song.
my young friend taught me this song 16 years ago, when we met. Still part of the repertoire.
Wonderful! I've seen Dave Mallett perform at the Common Ground Fair in Unity, ME - it's a really cool agricultural fair that features primarily organic and natural goods that are made or processed in Maine. Wonderful version! Can't miss Mark O' Connor with the signature hat...
When I was in kindergarten in 1993 we would sing this song. Good memories.
Thank you for this beautiful poignant song that helps me touch my first child’s early childhood in a way that gets harder and harder as he grows.
A wonderful song to sing while gardening..🍒🍓🍅
How haven’t I heard this before.. I love guitar and plants. The perfect song, kids can sing along too
This is just beautiful...
going to see him tonight...it has been years since we have heard him...
I saw him about 40 years ago at the Sounding Board in Hartford, Connecticut. It's nice to see him again.
Lovely song. Its not just talking about gardening behind home, but more than that. Its about dedication, passionate, and faith toward life.
Never heard the songwriter sing it. I put JD's version & this fine one in my Denver playlist. Thanks for the upload!
Music will never get any better than this! And the best in the business for backup.
+Duane Marxen You got that right pilgrim. Mark O'Conner the pride of Mountlake Terrace, WA on fiddle.
Recorded by many, but no one does it like David Mallett. I had the privilege to shoot some video of him doing this song at Noel Stookey's studio back at the end of the 70s. The song had been around just a little while and I don't think he ever imagined its elegance would be such a major part of his musical legacy.
What a lovely piece, and beautifully done. I agree, it's the best.
Such a nice song! And I love the way David Mallet sings it!
I've sung this many times over the years and will do it again for Earth Day 2022 - always going back to Dave for inspiration, and a smile. :{)
One of timeless pearls of beautiful music being sung all over this planet by these who love music and nature. I think this tune belongs to all that love their gardens and magic of planting, seeding and admiring plants grow. Thanks.
OMG! I love this version!!!
Just more proof that the person who wrote the song, usually has the best version. Apologies to Pete Seeger and John Denver.
then again, there are a few people who had no idea they were writing songs for johnny cash
The version by Tommy Makem and Liam Clancy was the first version I heard c1980, loved it then as now 🙂
Such a beautiful song and he sings it as beautifully as Pete does
Mostly - but not always. Peace ✌️
Peter Seeger us an American Hero
I have heard him sing it, in person. Even more moving in person. A great person beside being a great song writer, player, and singer.
And Jerry Douglas on the houn' dog. Nothing better.
Amazing rhythmic lock by all the musicians,
How'd it get so dusty in here all of a sudden? And who's peeling onions? Damn.
Beautiful. A song by a songwriter with a passion for growing vegetables, and one by a songwriter with a passion for eating :) I've head Susanna Clark comment that all of Guy's true love songs are about food.
Good song .. thanks from another Dave Malet...
great song, no doubt about it
For all the people who have worked hard. I love America and the working class.
I sing it when I work in the garden. Makes the work go by more quickly.
Optimism- what we need even more in pandemic 2020
Beautiful!
I learned this song from Pete Seeger & Arlo Guthrie albums decades ago. I found myself singing it this morning on the drive to work and had to come find the video for my 15 month old daughter to watch. Just awesome.. You can feel it. No wonder everyone who recorded it made it a hit... I am learning it on guitar with my teacher. Sulu
This song is part of me.
Beautiful song!
Love it!
I'm trying to play The Garden Song on my ukulele (which I'm learning to play in retirement). I've always loved this song since the first time I heard David sing it in Mpls. at the Coffee House Extempore back in the 70's. I remember meeting him and always thought he had (has) a great voice.
Thank you.
until now this was an Arlo Guthrie song to me, ..... well, u learn somethin' new each day!
Wow, thanks! With Jerry Douglas no less
@earlyrisersteph -- And Mark O'Connor! And Brent Mason _on rhythm guitar!_
Here is the song inch by inch. The real name of the song is garden song and this is the man who wrote it
Thumbs up to the Master and Beginner Gardners out there. Lets get growing!
And it ain't a children song. It's a working man's song....
Children turn into working people someday.... it's good to get em young : )
or woman!
COOL!!!!!
I sing this all the time
A lot of people take up gardening when they retire. I wonder if that's because when you garden, you remember that nothing lasts forever, but there are still beautiful things. At least that's what Leonard Nimoy said right before he died.
I saw this artist live in Tacoma at the antique sandwich company
I was looking for this version on the iTunes Store. Unfortunately, it is not available.
GREAT
Amazing STILL
One day, people who are turning Mars into a new home for Earthlife will sing it this way:
Inch by inch, row by row, gonna make this garden grow
Work the soil and the slow 'till we make it fertile ground
Inch by inch, row by row, God bless these seeds I sow
Mars warm them from below, 'till the rain comes tumbling down
Digging frost, crushing stone, Gonna make this world our own
Fertilize it with our bones, Put our life into the land
Mirrors shine, comets fall, Mars awakens at our call
Lots of work, but worth it all for a planet made by hand
Inch by inch, row by row, gonna make this garden grow
Work the soil and the slow 'till we make it fertile ground
Inch by inch, row by row, God bless these seeds I sow
Mars warm them from below, 'till the rain comes tumbling down
Awful dry, awful cold, and the soil is awful old
Superoxides won't unfold 'till you talk to them just right
But we endure, we persist, old Mars just can't resist
Life works like an alchemist with water, air and light
Inch by inch, row by row, gonna make this garden grow
Work the soil and the slow 'till we make it fertile ground
Inch by inch, row by row, God bless these seeds I sow
Mars warm them from below, 'till the rain comes tumbling down
And the rain will fall on Mars, and the crops will grow, and Martians will gather and sing the old songs, and remember the people who created them, and the people who preserved them and carried them to new worlds, along with Earth's other seeds.
Because Octavia Butler was right: It is the destiny of Earthlife to take root among the stars.
何度見てもかわいい、きゃーってかお😂
The Muppets sent me here.
good stuff! do you have the entire show? "American Music Shop" I think. DM loved seeing this again!
Nice to meet your brother Neal recently!
Do you still play together on occasion or for holidays?
Wow this song made me want to go out to the back yard and til up a bunch of dirt. Dig with my hand I big hole and crawl in it and pull the dirt over me

I enjoy Arlo Guthrie’s instructional version. He uses the Borin Method.

Was that a shot at John Denver? 😮
Not at all.
Yea I dont need to because I have ears and can listen to this song...
That's a shame, you are missing out on some really good music...but I respect that music is a very personal thing, and what appeals to one may not appeal to another.
and then Nick Federoff talks about Things Green, NFOG.
#ugottalisten2b4udie
Pulling weeds and picking stones,
man is made of dreams and bones.
This is an old Irish song
Also by Peter, Paul and Mary
Also by the great John Denver.
"Country Twang"? Seriously? You don't know Dave Mallett.
@lakesage I just uploaded 2 more from the same show: This Town and The Road Goes on Forever. Go to my channel page and check recent uploads.

john denver's version is my favorite, but of course you have to give proper respect to the original writer, Im just not a fan of his country twang myself.
This guy used to get way too drunk and steal people's guitars at parties. He was not well-loved.
Thumbs down sadsacks..........👍👍👍
