FX Airguns Maverick Long Range Build: Stretch Those Legs!

  • The FX Maverick is really shaping up to be an amazing long range tool of precision! Shooting extreme long range with big bore airguns has been an absolute blast and I keep pushing myself and my equipment further and further, but small bore PCP Airguns like the FX Maverick inherently are MUCH more of a precision tool. The last few years I've gotten more and more into small bore stuff and finding some strategies and gear that can get me out there pretty damn far.
    The biggest differences between big bore and small bore is the ammo and the ability to shoot large and heavy for caliber slugs with big bore airguns getting well over .2 BC ratings. With smaller caliber, which I consider .30 cal and under, your typical BC range for slugs is going to be .09 to maybe just a tad over .1. I am slinging NSA 36.2 grain slugs from my FX Maverick right around .1 BC and holding sub MOA groups at 100 yards.
    One advantage though with the and small bore airgun slugs is that you can often get them slinging out close to 1000 FPS on some hot rodded gear and easily in that 900+ FPS range even with bone stock equipment. My FX Maverick in .25 cal sniper configuration is my current favorite small caliber slug slinger. As you've seen on my channel I am holding sub MOA at 100 yards, which is critical if you even want to think about going beyond 100 yards. Garbage groups at 100 will look like an even bigger hot mess at 200 or 300 yards.
    So I have spent the snowed in time I have right now here in Northern Michigan to build out the ultimate long range shooting platform based on the FX Maverick. In this video I go through all the different accessories and the reason why I choose each to make precision long range shooting that much more enjoyable and repeatable. You still have to do your part, but this gear will allow you to focus on that part vs. wrestling with platform factors that you can zero out of the equation.
    First up is stretching out your legs and getting your rear stable. A proper rear support with a bag or monopod will tighten up your groups BIG TIME! Watch in this video what happens when you don't use a rear support. TOTAL shaking shake! Avoiding the teeter totter effect of having your bipod mounted to close to your trigger side is also a huge factor for sight picture stability and ultimately your ability to hold tight groups at long range. The new Saber Tactical Universal Arca Swiss Rail Extension helps you stretch those legs and stable your shooting platform.
    In this video I cover a bit about harmonics and how even the most microscopic and presumably small changes to your rifle can shift your point of impact BIG TIME. More to come on that topic, but this was a good primer of what is to come. Stay tuned!

    Harmonics tunning is the single most important thing in accuracy in shooting . Every change you make affects the tune (vibration) of the gun/weapon , and accuracy . Have fun and shoot often . Great video

      I think that sucks. Paying too much money to have a rifle that you can’t harmonize and add without having to do it All over again. Especially if your having someone tune your guns at purchase.

      @@dougdishler2086 As an extreme test, go shoot a 10 shot group hugging your rifle hard against your shoulder pulling it in with your shooting hand with the pistol grip. Now shoot a 10 shot group holding it that tight to your should, but with your non shooting hand. You will see your rifle group differently. It really starts showing up at 100 yards and beyond.

    Nice video and content Chris. That's what I'm doing with my airguns. Once I got it setup and 1 in group in 10 shots then I'd leave it like that and packed it up in foam case for next use. No sharing w other airguns because everytime something changed so does the harmonic and poi. It may not appear significantly but you'll see, feel and hear it. I started noticing this last summer with my Dreamline AeronCZ when I was swapping bipods and moderators around to find what I like most and learned something out of my curiosity 🙃.. After that, everything else has its own accessories and box so they're ready to use whenever. I also found that non floating barrel has less of this tendencies due to barrel supports but not an exception. Love your videos and please make more in depth videos about your FX .35 cal. Cheers.

    Excellent video man! Lots of good info! I've learned a lot from you lately, so thanks!
    I'm only shooting pellets ...177 Hades with a BC of .026 at 824 fps, usually around 40-60 yards. But even at those ranges, I'm a big fan of the bubble level! It seems to make a big difference, even at shorter ranges! I saw a vid from Matt Dubber lately & he had a curved bubble level that clamped to the scope tube ...looked cool! Thanks for the video & take care!

      @UpNorthAirGunner  3 года назад +5

      Thanks for watching and ballistics is ballistics! When Guinness World Records made me shoot that stupidly small .177 pellet for the record attempt, I did so begrudgingly - but learned a TON practicing in the wind with that lint - I mean pellet!

      @drummerdavemax 3 года назад +2

      @@UpNorthAirGunner Yeah, wind holds are crazy sometimes but I've been shooting 177 for so long, it seems normal for me! Ha! My basic rule is 1 moa per mph at 100 yards... so 10 mph wind @ 40 yards is like 4 lines, or right on the little circle, using my Element Titan scope!

    Great videos, liked and subscribed, can't wait for more.
    As to the barrel harmonics, a Fourier analysis would lend a better understanding, but keep in mind that it will be for an instantaneous time because of the laws of thermodynamics where temperature plays a very important role (temperature being the kinetic energy average of the substance being measured such as steel barrel, atmospheric air components, compressed air coming out of the plenum, etc.). The speed of sound is around five times slower than the speed of sound in the steel barrel, and the waves will be overtaken as the slow projectile, subsonic travels down the barrel. Just like in a rope, the thinner and longer, the more nodes, hertz, and amplitude; therefore, for starters, make the barrel heavier like adding the Ronin suppresser. The other is to watch the ambient temperature because a one-degree Fahrenheit difference will proportionately change the velocity due to the density change. The cant level is definitely a must.
    I would like to get the FX Maverick with the three caliber barrels (22, 25,30) in 700 mm to conduct some physics dynamic analysis. Any idea where I can pick up some used ones?
    Lastly, if you could add a little more data as to the starting Bar pressure, regulator pressure, shot count when velocity dropped off, and remaining Bar pressure at that point.
    Thank you for all the data you provided as it is very meaningful to do analysis. Other videos have rhetoric and imagery, but almost no data.
    In ending, numbers do not lie, but you can lie with numbers, and the laws of physics are not just really good ideas.
    Stay safe and Godspeed.
    FJB Out!
