I'm reading comments saying Latin America and Spain are two different things and while that's true, there is a connection between them not only culturally, but also historically and linguistically. They did a poor explaining in the lazy part. The stereotype comes because we don't live to work like some unhealthy high suicide rate countries like Asia or Europe. We work enough, and then is personal will. Specially if you are an employee we would not stay afterhours for free nor we will go out to company dinners, or go to work sick. In some countries people do t leave work until they overdone and finish things. Get after hours calls, obey their bosses as gods, etc. That is considered a no in a million times here. After hour with the company bosses, I don't want to ever think of them. Over hours?. You don't pay me for that, the deal was this hours, no more. I hate when my boss would call and told to go to the office for some paperwork. Ended blocking his number and leaving the company cellphone on desk. Fuck that, go yourself. You work to live you don't live to work. Work is a nuisance you do out of obligation. Your life is your family, friends and what you like to do. Work is not your life, is a thing you have to do because you need to pay for things for your life. Very few people can work in what they love and call it their life.
In my experience Latin people and Spanish people work longer hours than here in the UK, particularly in Latam. I speak from experience living and working in Argentina and Spain.

Estas muy equivocado......They are as a culture lazy, negar eso es mentira al 100% . Latinos only work hard when they are obligated and have no choice, which is usually the case when you are in another country, don't speak the native language or have documentation to get an easier job, and need to survive. That is the only reason, I lived in Venezuela and Colombia for 10 years and saw two of the laziest cultures I have ever seen. 2 hour naps every day at lunch, everything is half assed, construction projects take years to finish for even a simple road, people sit around and drink for hours every single night in large groups in the street. There is much more time and energy spent on socializing and fun than work and career, its not a bad thing but Latin America cannot seriously be defined by hard working people. Japanese and Americans work much more. Latinos have more fun

The correct use would be Hispanos, hispanoamericanos, Iberoaméricanos. We just use Latinos to include Haiti but the terms feels so awkward. I prefer hispano if we don't take in count Brazil.
The celebration and party may have to do with the hot weather(also about the laziness). Though even we have our differences and in Peru we say spanish ppl are lazy.... Also, Colombia and Venezuela may have much more things in common being caribbean countries than the rest of south america. If you go to Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and even Chile you will find something different. The people from the Andes specially are quieter and though they also like to celebrate, there is an inherent melancoly attributed to the cold and harsh environment of the high altitudes. This can also be a stereotype though! And if you go to Argentina and Uruguay, you will find it very similar to latin europeans as the italian and spanish migration was huge in these countries.
When it comes to Argentina, I'm not sure if huge waves is the right answer, it's more like they hold on to Europe culturally more than other parts. Because lots of other parts of LATAM got huge waves of European immigration as well. The islands of the Caribbean are less indigenous than the average Argentine. Nah. I’m American and I would say we think more of some Caribbean countries like Cuba, Haiti and the DR are better known for dance and then other places like Colombia and Brazil. I like Bachata, Salsa, Cumbia, Merengue. I think the countries who received a larger African influx tend to shaky shaky better.

I think people tell that Latinos are lazy partly because the concepts of 1.) siesta or sleeping in the afternoon, 2.) the mañana habit or doing things not right away, basically procrastinating. In the Philippines, a country conquered by Spain, we studied the effects of colonialism in our modern society in elementary, and that's what my teachers had pointed out.
As to being lazy, it can look like that from a Korean POV, because they have this toxic work-based culture and we are not like that (that's why Chinguamiga left Korea because she was getting physically sick). But we are not lazy, in Colombia we are really hard working people and this is why we have more American companies trying to hire Latam talent. It is just our culture is more people-oriented so parties are a fundamental instrument to our cultural and social development. This is why in Cali, if you don't dance you basically won't be having too much social life. And maybe the folks haven't been in their respective countries for a while because we have as many clubs, bars, restaurants as any other country. A stereotype that you can actually tell it's true is that we are very unpunctual.

Stereotypes are just that, just thoughs about a culture. But there is no just one way to be Colombian, venezuelan, spanish or other. Every country is so diverse, that you will find people who behave totally contrary to those stereotypes.
People who live between the tropics have this tendency to be good at dancing. Many of their lifestyle and idiosyncrasy are due to the warm climate in which they live all year round: they are very good at dancing, laughing, shouting, being in the street. However, Latin America identifies more than it should with this lifestyle. The countries of the southern cone, especially the Chile/Argentina/Uruguay chain, are radically different countries: they do not dance, they do not shout, they do not speak loudly, they do not meet in the street or on the corners, they do not play loud music; they are more in the European style: serious, quiet, a bit cold and distant, definitely less friendly and open than the Caribbean, very jealous and at the same time respectful of the public space and also of the individual space of each person, they do not kiss or hug strangers like caribbean people do. In short, more European style
I disagree with what the Spaniard said, in LATAM, we're not that culturally different from one another at least relative to how different Europeans, Asians, and Africans can be to one another. We're much more identical than we are different. The countries within LATAM are carved out of administrative subsections of the Spanish and Portuguese empires, whose lines were drawn very arbitrarily based on personal whims of the royals. Traveling from one cultural subsection of Europe to another feels vastly more different than me traveling from northern LATAM to southern LATAM. Within the context of Spain/Portugal/Southern Europe and LATAM, that's where the notable difference actually begins, and even then it's not THAT huge either.

I dont think the lazy stereotype is accurate, I mean sure I have know lazy people on my country (venezuela) but most people I know they wake up everyday at 3 or 4 am and then go out to take the bus or the transportation that takes them to the places where they work or study, that is usually far away from where they live and stay out of home untill almost evening or the night that is when the work or study time ends, and they do this every day, sometimes even on weekends. What I do feel is that latinos (including me) sometimes we can be too impulsives and give priority to "Fiesta" in moments when surelly an european or asian wouldnt do, like after you finish your working day or studying day and meet some friends and someone say lets grab a beer! or lets go the beach tomorrrow! and we are like Yeaaaah! and we can go to work next day even if you had partied all night, wich probably is something someone raised in a "strict" culture wouldnt do because has to think about the responsability and stuff. Well I says this because I used to work and study and I was also able to party all night and then the next day go to work and study, and I never missed a single day of my duties xD but I admit that something like this could give a wrong impression to someone else.

i saw all the videos and i still don't understand how the Spanish guy is in the same side of the latinos when Spain is a European country with Eurocentric culture, to be latino you have to not only be born in latin America but have an inside experience on the culture. Edit: it's got nothing to do with speaking spanish, it's the big difference from the european culture to the latin american one.

I mean your comment is kind of wrong. The concept of a Eurocentric culture and united Europe only started in the 1970s. Previous to that, Europeans didn’t seem themselves as a united group and Spain was very isolated culturally due to the Pyrenees mountains. The culture in Spain is not very similar to many other European countries. The reason why Spain and latam are lumped together is because the general public sees all Hispanics as one group, and applies stereotypes to all of us.

It's also confusing because in Spanish "estadounidense" (roughly United States person) refers to both the USA and Mexico since their Spanish names are both "Estados Unidos ____" United States of America and United States of Mexico.

In my experience Latin people and Spanish people work longer hours than here in the UK, particularly in Latam. I speak from experience living and working in Argentina and Spain.

Latinos only work hard when they are obligated and have no choice, which is usually the case when you are in another country, don't speak the native language or have documentation to get an easier job, and need to survive. That is the only reason, I lived in Venezuela and Colombia for 10 years and saw two of the laziest cultures I have ever seen. 2 hour naps every day at lunch, everything is half assed, construction projects take years to finish for even a simple road, people sit around and drink for hours every single night in large groups in the street. There is much more time and energy spent on socializing and fun than work and career, its not a bad thing but Latin America cannot seriously be defined by hard working people. Japanese and Americans work much more. Latinos have more fun

The correct use would be Hispanos, hispanoamericanos, Iberoaméricanos. We just use Latinos to include Haiti but the terms feels so awkward. I prefer hispano if we don't take in count Brazil.

The celebration and party may have to do with the hot weather(also about the laziness). Though even we have our differences and in Peru we say spanish ppl are lazy.... Also, Colombia and Venezuela may have much more things in common being caribbean countries than the rest of south america. If you go to Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and even Chile you will find something different. The people from the Andes specially are quieter and though they also like to celebrate, there is an inherent melancoly attributed to the cold and harsh environment of the high altitudes. This can also be a stereotype though! And if you go to Argentina and Uruguay, you will find it very similar to latin europeans as the italian and spanish migration was huge in these countries.

When it comes to Argentina, I'm not sure if huge waves is the right answer, it's more like they hold on to Europe culturally more than other parts. Because lots of other parts of LATAM got huge waves of European immigration as well. The islands of the Caribbean are less indigenous than the average Argentine. I think people tell that Latinos are lazy partly because the concepts of 1.) siesta or sleeping in the afternoon, 2.) the mañana habit or doing things not right away, basically procrastinating. In the Philippines, a country conquered by Spain, we studied the effects of colonialism in our modern society in elementary, and that's what my teachers had pointed out.

As to being lazy, it can look like that from a Korean POV, because they have this toxic work-based culture and we are not like that (that's why Chinguamiga left Korea because she was getting physically sick). But we are not lazy, in Colombia we are really hard working people and this is why we have more American companies trying to hire Latam talent. It is just our culture is more people-oriented so parties are a fundamental instrument to our cultural and social development. This is why in Cali, if you don't dance you basically won't be having too much social life. And maybe the folks haven't been in their respective countries for a while because we have as many clubs, bars, restaurants as any other country. A stereotype that you can actually tell it's true is that we are very unpunctual.

Stereotypes are just that, just thoughs about a culture. But there is no just one way to be Colombian, venezuelan, spanish or other. Every country is so diverse, that you will find people who behave totally contrary to those stereotypes.

I disagree with what the Spaniard said, in LATAM, we're not that culturally different from one another at least relative to how different Europeans, Asians, and Africans can be to one another. We're much more identical than we are different. The countries within LATAM are carved out of administrative subsections of the Spanish and Portuguese empires, whose lines were drawn very arbitrarily based on personal whims of the royals. Traveling from one cultural subsection of Europe to another feels vastly more different than me traveling from northern LATAM to southern LATAM. Within the context of Spain/Portugal/Southern Europe and LATAM, that's where the notable difference actually begins, and even then it's not THAT huge either.

I dont think the lazy stereotype is accurate, I mean sure I have know lazy people on my country (venezuela) but most people I know they wake up everyday at 3 or 4 am and then go out to take the bus or the transportation that takes them to the places where they work or study, that is usually far away from where they live and stay out of home untill almost evening or the night that is when the work or study time ends, and they do this every day, sometimes even on weekends. What I do feel is that latinos (including me) sometimes we can be too impulsives and give priority to "Fiesta" in moments when surelly an european or asian wouldnt do, like after you finish your working day or studying day and meet some friends and someone say lets grab a beer! or lets go the beach tomorrrow! and we are like Yeaaaah! and we can go to work next day even if you had partied all night, wich probably is something someone raised in a "strict" culture wouldnt do because has to think about the responsability and stuff. Well I says this because I used to work and study and I was also able to party all night and then the next day go to work and study, and I never missed a single day of my duties xD but I admit that something like this could give a wrong impression to someone else.

I mean your comment is kind of wrong. The concept of a Eurocentric culture and united Europe only started in the 1970s. Previous to that, Europeans didn’t seem themselves as a united group and Spain was very isolated culturally due to the Pyrenees mountains. The culture in Spain is not very similar to many other European countries. The reason why Spain and latam are lumped together is because the general public sees all Hispanics as one group, and applies stereotypes to all of us.

Clearly he meant the lady was from the USA but to hear some people on here tell it no one in Latin America calls us Americans. Actually he’s speaking ENGLISH so that’s the word he should use. I say estadounidense when I’m speaking SPANISH. It’s not that hard to understand unless you don’t actually speak the languages.

It's also confusing because in Spanish "estadounidense" (roughly United States person) refers to both the USA and Mexico since their Spanish names are both "Estados Unidos ____" United States of America and United States of Mexico.

No sé por qué lo dices, las mujeres de Venezuela tienen rasgos muy preciosos y cuerpos estereotípicamente muy bonitos por naturaleza e independientemente de su estatus social. Es muy normal ver a chicas y hasta chicos que tengan figuras de modelo pasar en la calle, no necesariamente tiene que ver con lo de Miss Universo o etc.

Así que siempre están "de punta en blanco".
Es un estereotipo muy cierto si me preguntas. Podría decir que incluso los hombres, en otras palabras los venezolanos en general son bastante atractivos, con sus excepciones obviamente.

Speak for yourself. I am not lazy. I work every day from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. even if I don't like it. It's a widespread stereotype because of the siesta or the fact that there is a split day and the day seems to stop for two hours at midday. But it doesn't make us lazy.
