Love my SOG Terminus XR. The larger "buttons" for the lock are great, especially while wearing gloves, without being too big or in the way, and I like the flipper. I NEED a wharncliffe blade version though!
I had a SOG Tac XR and is was way smoother than any Benchmade I've ever owned. Hogue's Able Lock is really awesome/smooth too. I would say SOG's XR and Hogue's Able Lock are my favorite "Axis" style locks.
I hated mine, every corner was sharp and especially the flipper was bad. Maybe it was because I got one from the first batch, intend to give it a second shot with the LTE..
@@etherealicer totally agree . Flipper is sharp and pocket clip is a hotspot and the sting on the xr is too strong and makes it less pleasant to flip open
@@scottpoole2182 if you haven’t already purchased it in gold… don’t. It was my first “real knife” and the gold started to wear off in a very ugly way immediately. And I mean without even being used. The carbon fiber also feels sharp and the lack of weight actually isn’t the best. If you could get a G10 version with a stone wash s35vn or something definitely do that instead. Trust me the gold in person is underwhelming and you’ll regret once the finish gets destroyed.
I own a SOG Seal XR. Had it just a shade over 6 months and it's my favorite pocket knife. Never a day comes by where I open this knife and don't get a smile on my face. Keep up the great work Blade HQ, cheers.🍺
I've had a omega spring break on my bugout. Just sent it back to Benchmade and they fixed it for free. It's a good lock-type with no need to have your finger in the line of the blade, although fidgeting with it increases the chance of snagging yourself :)
Dude...get a deka, I have 2 of them and love them. With the 20cv, surprisingly smooth action, good size, and great price point, its an amazing knife and hard not to love.
Hogues are amazing knives. Particularly the Deka & RSK models. They are smooth, look great, & are actually capable of some hard use. I used my Deka at work on VERY thick cardboard & it never blinked once. They are so, so sweet & not too expensive! 😃
Yes Jamie, agree wholeheartedly; Hogue knives Rock! For all you've mentioned and some you hadn't .... I carry the Hogue ex A05, and luv everything about it. From the fit and finish, materials used, to the overall appeal and usability. Hogue provides a quality product for the money. Homerun in my estimation.
The Axis lock has been out for over 20 year's now guys. It's been out since the late 90's. Also I think Hogues Able lock took the Axis lock and improved on it and made it even smoother and just somehow better feeling action wise.
The Manix 2 is the best version I've handled. Love it. I just wish the button didn't eat a hole in my thumb. I need to upgrade it to see if the Flytanium replacement does better.
Bought a Bugout as my first benchmade. Was not impressed. The axis pin was made of titanium making the action rough and sticky due to the galling. I sent it in for warranty because both omega springs broke in 3 months. The replacement was rough too. I sent it back in and they upgraded me to a 940 and the action was like sandpaper, the edge grind was way off center and they just leave the machining marks on the blade. Compaired to a 940 my dad has that was made in October of 2000, their quality has gone down as the prices have gone up. Sold it and bought a Spyderco Para 3 in S35vn and never looked back.
I bought a ganzo knife about a year ago just to test it out and it’s one of those “axis lock” ones and yet I’ve fidgeted with it a lot and it’s held up. So maybe omega springs are just pure crap.
I love the cross bar lock systems, and actually own many of these. I agree with Jamie, the Deka is so good, I can’t stop fidgeting! I hope to see more companies pro using these type of knives.
Should totally get the Deka. I love BladeHQ but you should check out knife centers exclusive deka with lava gmascus. Super cool if you like red like I do. Keep up the good work guys
Mini barrage and a McHenry Williams in D2. Seem to be all I need haha. Carry the barrage everywhere. After watching this, I found that holding the axis lock while opening the larger McHenry Williams instead of the thumb assist makes it a much easier and faster deploy. Thanks for the tip!
I think the Bugout is the Bugout because it is simple and clean, neutral handle, neutral blade-shape, global availability and customization (both from Benchmade and after-market). Benchmade is really awesome with the warranty (they sent me clips and screws no problems and I live in Switzerland). Hogue only recently changed their policy that you don't void your warranty when you take your knife apart, which is why there are no/less after-market parts. Sum this up and it is easy to see why the Bugout is so popular.
Hi guys hope you both are well as well as the viewers. I will tell you guys that with regards to a great everyday knife that does not get the fame deserved is the Benchmade Valet. This knife I will honestly say can give big competition to the Bugout. The steel is great and this knife does not take up too much space in a pocket.
It is expensive, on that I agree... but I love the clean look of the Carter (got a gray one, colored the scales blue and it really looks awesome). The Deka has a way too busy look for me but is certainly the better value. Absolutely hated the Terminus XR in CF... every edge was sharp, the flipper bit harder than the blade, absolutely terrible.... I got the XR the minute it came out and hope they have improved on that (especially since loads of people seem to like it), so I'm looking forward to the Terminus XR LTE
@@etherealicer I went back and used my SOG that had an ARC lock. Those things are sturdy. The main reason I like them is because you can actually just pull one side of it, with one finger, where if you try to so that with an XR or Axis lock you’ll get this friction and diagonal pull that makes it hard to open.
Yeah, at that price I was pretty surprised to discover it was made in China. You can get a nice Chinese-made knife, from We or Artisan, for instance with Micarta and arguably better blade steel for much less than the Carter... It is an attractive design, though.
I use to feel the same way about the Bugout until I purchased a Deka. It’s better than the Bugout to me in almost every way. You should definitely buy one for yourself.

Kurt, how do you get through the day only carrying an axis lock? Probably keeping it in the knife would be way more useful. 😂 you guys are awesome and bladehq has been such a blessing to the knife community
I super agree with The Carter. The thumb disk needs some perpendicular ridges to catch some thumb meat to flip that blade open better. I find my thumb slips from time to time when I try to flick it open.

Big fan of Benchmade and the Axis lock. Although, I have had mine on my Mini Griptillian “break” (by break, I mean the spring came out of whatever cut-ins it was living in, and the lock no longer worked) twice in 2 years. I can’t say I’m a fan of that, but I send it to Benchmade, and they fix it no problem. I’ve since gotten a Microtec OTF, and now have a hard time using anything else, but that is neither here nor there, I just wanted to tell more people that I have one.
Excellent video as always, Guys! I recently acquired the Bestech Slasher with D2 and Micarta. Their "B-Lock" seems like a good version of the Axis lock...and the knife has an extremely solid, robust quality to it, having full steel liners under the micarta, with metal completely surrounding the B-lock mechanism. And the blade came extremely sharp out-of-box. Any thoughts? Thanks!
