To me, the best thing about Mark is that although he is a fantastic guitarist, he writes and arranges music that allows all band members to shine.

Mark said in an interview that they were doing 300 concerts a year and everyone was physically and mentally exhausted. Many had families at this point and it was difficult. He felt that the size of every thing was out of control and after this series of concerts, he decided to disband them. One band that didnt get into drugs, etc. and left everyone wanting more.

Coolest voice in rock and roll. Not necessarily the greatest, but definitely the coolest. And the guitar, what can you say? He's the whole package, and the rest of the band ain't so bad either. Saw them at an outdoor arena just outside Chicago in the mid-eighties and man oh man. I remember reading in the paper the next day that they broke the all time to attendance record for the venue that night. All their classic songs are extended live way beyond their studio versions. And the arrangements and instrumentation is solid. Each one a journey. You've got to experience the live version of "Sultans of Swing" from the "Alchemy" concert. It is life changing!! Would also highly recommend the studio version of "Skate Away". 🎸 👍

That album, On Every Street, was another incarnation. Mark started letting his guitar sing again. I feel there was a period where he truncated the notes and didn't let them breathe. This was a departure. You should check out, "The Planet of New Orleans". It's a Sci-Fi journey!

You'll get many recommendations for Dire Straits songs to check out, but I'll throw in You And Your Friend from this same On The Night concert, with the magical sound from Mark Knopfler's guitar soaring into the evening sky and the exchanges with Paul Franklin's pedal steel.

At the end of the song he plays a lick on the guitar that it clearly sounds like "thank you, thank you.".

Wow, good choice! I've seen some amazing videos of that band such as "Sultans of Swing" and "Telegraph Road" (Alchemy Live). But this one sizzles!!!🔥🔥🔥 Thanks for a great reaction! 🐝

This is one of my favorite bands. Mark Knopfler has a very unique style of singing and guitar picking, apart from his natural light touch, great feel and wonderful vibrato, the thing that makes his playing so distinctive is his individual fingerstyle approach which he apparently developed quite naturally to him, but I've read is quite difficult to copy or imitate. And his beautifully smooth baritone style(IMO) is very pleasing to the ear. Here's another live performance, if interested "Dire Straits - Telegraph Road Live -aLCHEMY Tour 1983" be prepared to hear some beautiful storytelling 🤗🎶🎸💜

Hey, thanks for reacting to this song. Really enjoying your channel. If you like to react to DS, live performances are the best like Sultans Of Swing Live Sydney Final Concert 1986, Heavy Fuel, Brothers In Arms and Private Investigations from DS Live On The Night 1993. Cheers from Oz All the best 👍🎸🎸🎸

I recommend listening to the Notting hill billies playing live a song called I think I love you too much. It was a side project for mark. It’s a good song and marks guitar sounds fab in it.

chicken pickin....a style of playing guitar , without a pick, fingers only. A tradition started by chet Skins, carried on by artists such as Vince Gill, Albert Lee, Jerry Reed, Brad Paisley and most recently, Derek Trucks of Tedesschi Trucks Band, all though Derek adds glass slide to it. Chicken Pickin is an art.

The Alchemy tour is pretty much recognised as the best Dire Straits live stuff (Private Investigations is well worth a watch) but it’s nice to see a live version of a song off the “on every street” album being reacted to. Also check out Brothers in Arms live at the Nelson Mandela tribute concert at Wembley.
    Good reaction that…..I enjoyed it

You need a very professional and dedicated drummer to carry off music like this. Straits always had king drummers.
