Mark once commented that the idea for the song came about when he left his phone off the hook whilst his brother in law was repeatedly trying to contact him. When he finally got through, he commented that getting hold of him was harder than getting hold of Elvis. And so another showstopper was born…….

This was recorded at Feyenoord stadium in Rotterdam, and while with most bands this would be the encore to the concert, Dire Straits started their concert with this. Phil Palmer who played rythm guitar on these concerts once said when he played with Eric Clapton they rehearsed for one or 2 weeks before a tour , with Mark Knopfler they rehearsed for 3 months

Fun fact: After this tour Mark quit the band, they split and Dire Straits was no more. In several interviews Mark stated that he hated how big they became and all the huge touring and stadiims that came with it. Sad but true. He went on solo ever since…

Thanks for another Dire Straits reaction. It’s so fascinating witnessing you discover the genius of this band and of his leader, singer, songwriter and guitarist!
Don’t miss the music video which is cool and almost won an mtv video award back in 1991!
Just for you to know, the two last tours (Brothers In Arms and On Every Street) consisted of 250 shows each ;-)
They used to do huge tours, because Mark Knopfler reluctantly played stadium and prefered playing multiple nights in arenas to make the experience better for the audience (and for him too I assume)
They played 13 times straight at the Wembley arena + did a few Hammersmith Odeon in London back in 1985, where they could have played 4 or 5 (or even more) Wembley Stadiums at the time. Same everywhere. In Paris in 1991/1992, they played 10 times at the Bercy Arena where they could have played multiple times at the Parc des Princes stadium or at the Longchamp Hippodrome. They did 20 or more shows in a row at the Entertainment Center in Sydney too back in 1986… The list goes on.

I had a feeling you guys would react to this one soon. I was actually going to make the recommendation myself. It's another Dire Straits classic, and for me, this performance just demonstrates that Mark can play all the fast technical licks when he really wants to. He just chooses not to most of the time, and plays what's right for the song. He always seems to go unmentioned when there are polls and articles discussing greatest guitarists. For me, he's one of the greatest. Thanks for another amazing reaction guys!

You 2 are so fun and great and want to honor here your pilling carot ability.
More seriously as you said the way Mark is playing is not so easy and comes a long way back to the early 1920 in the US Folk history, known as Travis picking technic where the thumb of his right hand is playing the bass line while the other fingers of that same hand plays the melody. Imagine the complexity! That technic is primary used in US Folk music (his primary influence like Chet Atkins) but the genius of Mark has been to applied it to Electric guitar. This is where his unique tone his coming from.
I was I guess a bit long, but continue your great reacts, You are so fresh!
Maybe pilling could apply to guitar, I'll investigate that😅. Cheers from France

Phil Palmer was the 2nd. guitarist on stage. If anything went wrong with Mark then Phil would step in and finish the solo note for note. He did exactly that for Eric Clapton live. Eric broke a string and simply said take it Phil. Phil took it. Look him up, Amazing. Also, I think that is a young and "thinner " Danny Cummings on drums/percussion who later went on to ne Mark's GOTO drummer on his solo tours.

First of all, thankyou for another passionate reaction to Dire straits. This was the opening song for all the On every street world tour, from 1991 to end of 1992, with over 300 concerts all over the world. In this tour (last dance for Dire Straits) the gutarism ok MK was "outrageous"... it's like he's saying with guitarism this concept: "I'm the best guitarist of all times, let me show you... " i know you've reacted yet to the song Sultans of Swing... but only for your pleasure i suggest to see this performance from 1992 tour in Basel. Absolutely outrageus...😂 ... ruclips.net/video/RFclpoxI_-M/видео.htmlsi=rhpAbR-DxnJjF9KO

Isn't it great to see musicians just being great at making great music rather than having dancers on stage and relying on gimmicks and backing tracks!
Mark never uses a plectrum, he finger picks everything which is an unusual technique for a rock guitarists, and that's gives them such a unique sound.
