Seriously, the world needs more Mike Hill videos. He knows what's really going on.
Please make a video series analyzing one movie at a time. Start with Toy Story or something and work your way to today.

Mike. We need to turn the tide. I work in entertainment and it feels like like-minded people are splintered... few and far between. Somethings gotta change man, everything is overwhelmingly shit.

Love everything said here--especially using the words "spiritually enriching." I'm not saying I need every story to have an explicit moral, but I want stories to be *nourishing* to the soul--honest in some way. With accurate cause-and-effect (especially with emotions!), sincerity! I NEED MORE MIKE HILL VIDS NOM

This is exactly why The Incredibles 2 was not a good movie--not only did the film lack a compelling reason to exist, but none of the characters went through the hero's journey and came out changed on the other side of it. If they did, it was just a rehash of the first film. 😢

The way movies have changed is kind of similar to how the food industry changed:
Classic movies looked tasty but you could tell they were made with love like the way your Mum makes a roast, all done with fresh ingredients and we secretly got our dose of vitamins and minerals. It didn't just taste good but it also made you feel good... a "hearty" meal is the term I use.
Present movies do everything they can to look appetizing when in fact they are made of nothing but processed sugar and chemicals doing its best to emulate real food but its slowly giving you cancer.
The way I see movies now is very much food chain vs fine dining and the problem with that is I am at an age where I prefer fine dining but I can't afford to have it all time maybe once or twice a year? Well that is exactly how often I now go to the cinema and those one or two movies are generally reserved for Nolan or Tarantino because they are the only filmmakers left that still give a shit.

There's way too little material on this channel. I loved every bit of information it delivers. Any chance of a sequel or prequel?
Btw I often joke how Matrix, a wonderful story, blinded worldwide producers with sweet vfx and made them think you can live without a good story 😶

Is this from a longer podcast episode or something? Great info but seems heavily edited down… 🤔

I feel like Lawrence Kasdan did bring some subtextual depth to Force Awakens that the other two sequels have missing. He made Han Solo like a surrogate father to Rey and Finn in a way where they were both orphans and brought them into the world of the Force. And Kylo, who rejected his parents and feels orphan isolation as well, is living under the shadow of Vader the whole time. The characters all had a mysterious inner power that they had to grapple with. I think there were a lot of interesting themes and characters that made it resonate with people even if it was a retread in many ways. Like Top Gun it wasn't political either. Episode 7 was largely well-liked and made $2 billion, it wasn't that divisive outside of contrarians on the internet. It felt like a loving return to form at the time.
These themes were immediately disregarded in Episode 8 (Rian had Rey "fall in love" with Kylo the days after he killed Han FFS), the audience was mocked for sincerely investing in the story/characters, and it made $700+ million less and completely broke the franchise. And then Episode 9, made on an accelerated timeline for some reason, couldn't put it back together.
I think Episode 7 deserves more credit in retrospect for trying at least, they could've handled the mysteries better in the next 2 films but that doesn't mean that it's inherently all worthless.

TFA doesn't deserve any credit, especially not for trying.

Epidode 7 did have enough of the elements from the original to hit those nostalgia hormones, but it doesnt stand on its own merits, the monomyth isnt coherently represented, it's more lip service than substance. Still far better than its sequels of course.

That's what you get when you have Jar Jar Abrams directing. The master of copying something without understanding it.
