Gracias!
@@Etherealnow1 una soprano dijo eso? Guau, desconocía esa anécdota.
If you watch the entire show she apologises to the crowd at one point for not giving a 100% that day because she had a cold. She sang like that... WHILE HAVING A COLD!

Agreed, my mom has albums of her and here she didn't sing at her top
She still delivered.

Lo interesante de La Negra, es que tomó clases de canto, hasta pocas semanas antes de morir. Ahí es donde nos podemos sentir orgullosos los argentinos y latinoamericanos de contar con un exponente tan profesional como esta artista tan grande.
I speak Spanish fluently and have been listening to Mercedes Sosa for decades. I still cry almost every time I hear her voice and the poetry that is comprised in her repertoire.

@cachivache caners Mercedes Sosa is a interpeter she is not the writer of any of her songs
@cachivache caners when the video starts, she (Mercedes Sosa) mentions Violeta Parra, a Chilean artist who wrote the song
Mercedes, argentinian, is a Cathedral in latinamerican music, singing, folcklore, history, culture, politics, etc. And so was Violeta Parra, chilean, original composer and singer of the song. Cheers from Chile!
Coico Brown Mercedes Sosa was Argentina but of Aymara indigenous descent, I will clarify for you since Argentines of European descent tend to deny people like them
@@CJLuna I never heard a word from Mercedes Sosa saing she was discriminated or persecuted because of his indigenous ancestry. Most of the great exponents of Argentin folclore (folk music) are descendants of indigenous people.
titotitot@cjl.jotmail (:) I’m from Argentina, and we do have some problems here, and also a lot of beautiful things, and that is one of the most inaccurate things I’ve seen about my country. hi Beth, here is a translation of the lyrics to English:
Thanks to life, which has given me so much.
It gave me two eyes, that when I open them,
perfectly distinguish black from white
And in the tall sky its starry backdrop,
And within the multitudes the man I love.
Thanks to life, which has given me so much.
It gave me sound and the alphabet.
With them the words I think and declare:
“Mother,” “Friend,” “Brother” and light shining down on
The road of the soul of the one I'm loving.
Thanks to life, which has given me so much.
It gave me the pace of my tired feet.
With them I have traveled cities and puddles
beaches and deserts, mountains and plains.
And your house, your street and your patio.
Thanks to life, which has given me so much.
It gave me the heart that shakes its frame,
When I see the fruit of the human brain,
When I see the good so far from the evil,
When I look into the depth of your light eyes…
Thanks to life, which has given me so much.
It gave me laughter and it gave me crying.
this is how I distinguish happiness from pain
The two materials that make up my song,
And your song, as well, which is the same song.
And everyone’s song, which is my own song.
Thank you to life, Thank you to life,
Thank you to life, Thank you to life...
One of the most beautiful songs ever written in the world, wonderful lyrics by the wonderful Violeta Parra. Thank you for the accurate translation
Una de las canciones más hermosas que se han escrito en el mundo, una letra maravillosa de la maravillosa Violeta Parra. Gracias por la certera traducción
I think at the end instead of "song", "singing" is more adequate
@@juanmanuelcastrillon3585 you are, in part, correct; if I translate it literally (word by word) you're probably right. However the word "singing" is used in English only as a verb. In this particular case, when she says "Canto" she's not only referring to the act of singing, it is more of a noun, she also means this song, and the story within the song. Is like saying, "this is my story, my story is everyone's story, and everyone's story is also mine." Just as reference, I am originally from Buenos Aires, and I worked many years as an interpreter for a government, as such, I have to look at the context of the words and convey, not only the words, as acuratelly as possible, but also equivalent expressions. Many times, the equivalent expression doesn't use the same words, although in this case, it practically does. For instance, if you say... "La miré a los ojos" it would literally translate into "I looked at her eyes" but the correct translation would be "I looked into her eyes" even though the preposition "a" means "at" in this case, and not "into".

I am Danish. I first heard of her when her death was announced on the Danish news. There was a very short sequence of her singing “Gracias a la vida”. I sensed a tremendous energy emanating from her. The sincere and tender yet firm look in her eyes captivated me, and I felt as though she is looking directly into my soul. There was something about her, a “mystical presence,” which reached the deepest parts of my being. Every time I watched her or listened to her voice, I started to cry. I intuitively began relating to her as a mother-figure and discovered that I was healing from childhood wounds. As a result, I have spent many years trying to answer the question: What was the secret behind her impact? It has been an awesome journey..:) If you like to know more about my healing journey with Mercedes Sosa, I have included the story in the biography: Mercedes Sosa - The Voice of Hope

Mercedes Sosa é um presente maravilhoso dos nossos irmãos argentino. Uma rainha.
I loved your reaction to Sosa's voice. Her voice was one of the 10 best voices in the world at her time. Her career started when she won a radio contest when she was 15. She wanted to sing opera but her father didn’t allow it. She grew up in poverty and throughout her life she used her voice in solidarity with her poor, which gave her the nickname, The Voice of The Voiceless. In an interview with Don Heckman for LA Times in 1995 she says: "There are things that are more important than the vocal cords. It's what you feel when you make a sound, feelings of love, of solidarity with others. It's not about technique. It's about what is inside". I believe it is the combination of voice and personality and passion that makes her a singing legend. I spent 10 years researching her personal life and her story is really amazing. Mercedes Sosa, was without doubt a world-class performer, but her influence went far beyond the borders of music. She is the unsung hero of Latin America. I have researced her life in depth for years and I would say that she is the female counterpart to South Africa's Nelson Mandela, the mother of South America (who could have become a world legend, had she spoken English and been male). She was blacklisted as being one the most dangerous people to the regime in Argentina in the 1970s, was arrested on stage in front of her audience and took exile in Spain for three years. On her return to Argentina, she became the underground reference point for the poor and oppressed, and an icon of democracy who fought South America’s dictators with her voice. That is why she was nicknamed, “The Voice of the Voiceless”. Here is a list of prizes and titles she earned which shows that she was much more than just a singer.

Thank you for this, Beth. I've loved and admired Mercedes Sosa's singing for decades, but your analysis helps me to better understand what made her so special.
She is a legend not only because of her voice, but because of her integrity .This is how Joan Baéz describes her: "Ms. Sosa maintains a balance between craft and conviction that endows her music with a searing honesty and power. I have never seen anything like her. She is monumental in stature, a brilliant singer with tremendous charisma who is both a voice and a persona. She may not look like Tina Turner, but she can hold an audience from the stage. When we were singing in concerts together, I would weep all through her set. It embarrassed her, but one night I got down on my knees and kissed her feet. I hadn't been so moved by music in a long time. As far as performers go, she is simply the best.”

If you didnt know her. I recommend listening to more songs from her because her voice is really impressive
The lyric of this song is also supreme! It speaks that we are all one in the sweet moments and the sad moments, describing the little things and big things in life.
I like the way you react and comments to the artists. I can see you feel the emotion transmitted by the songs, even when you don’t understand the lyrics. I also love your crescendos and diminuendos. 👌🏼
A song from her you should definitely listen to is "la maza", it's lovely.
Thank you for Mercedes Sosa Beth 🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷
What wonderful that someone in the other part of the world can see and say that our things, our culture, our music, are beautiful and stronger. Saludos desde Argentina!
It is a pride that someone values his voice and talent so much, it shows from the way you applaud with a smile at the end that you enjoyed a lot like all of us who listen to "La Negra", you should look for the lyrics and listen to them with subtitles, it's just beautiful.
