  • A playthrough of Taito's 1991 Super NES-exclusive entry to the classic Darius shoot-em-up series, Darius Twin.
    Played through on the normal difficulty mode (which is oddly the most difficult mode available), all other options left at default.
    This is I think my favorite shooter - not just on the SNES, but overall. It was the first "modern" shooter I had played at the time - modern meaning 16-bit. Sure, I loved Gradius, Life Force, Starship Hector and the like, but this was in a completely different league! (Well, okay, I'd probably have a hard time choosing between this and Air Zonk, but that's not my focus here).
    My friend Mike and I were nine the year the SNES launched, and we both got it for Christmas that year. His parents bought him Darius Twin with his, so we always played this when I'd bike over to his house after school. He was always playing the ever-living hell out of it - and I loved it as much as he did. Weird, trippy music set to exploding robot fish? Power Rangers wasn't around yet, so this was badass. I bugged him over and over to borrow it, but he wasn't interested.
    But he didn't get F-Zero like I did that Christmas, and that was my bargaining chip to borrow his Darius Twin game. He had been wanting to borrow it too, so I finally convinced my parents to allow me to swap games with him (it was, after all, a $60 cart in 1991, I only had had it a couple weeks yet), and so I finally got to play Darius Twin at home! We both tore into those games, and within about two weeks we had both completely mastered the games - he won the championship mode on the hardest F-Zero mode, and I beat hardest difficulty level on Darius Twin with the best ending.
    Then we traded back, and I was happy to have F-Zero back so I could beat it for umpteenth time. I always did miss Darius Twin though, and whenever my parents were like, "Hey, do you want a game?" we were never at a store that had it. And seriously, I was 9. It's not like I had the willpower to say, "No thanks, I don't want a Super Nintendo game. I'll wait until we find a copy of Darius Twin, if we ever do." Yeah, right. Anyways, sorry for the super long nostalgia rant - this game brings back so many memories! It's awesome.
    I put all five endings at the end of the video, in case you haven't seen them all.
    25:14 Final boss battle and best ending - earned by not losing any lives, getting two 1-ups, following the shown stage path, and killing every mini and major boss before they escape
    27:51 Earned the same way but with one life lost
    29:45 Earned the same way but with two lives lost
    31:42 Earned if you allow Super Alloy Lantern to escape
    33:39 Earned if you die more than twice or follow a different route
    I played this quite awhile back for the channel, but it's only 30fps and someone brought to my attention that the flickering killed the bullets in certain spots, so here is an improved video (and I play quite a bit better in this than the last one!)
    Hope you enjoy it!

    This was the game that originally sold me on how incredible Zuntata's music really was - it's certainly bizarre, but it fits the giant robot fish motif quite well.
    My all-time favourite traditional 2D shmup, and is easily on par with the best 16-bit Compile and Konami games. At least, I always thought so!

      The only reason I don't name it better as a 2D shmup is because it's a 2.5D shmup with some 3D elements as well. :P

    • @NintendoComplete
      @NintendoComplete  8 лет назад +1

      +Kain Yusanagi I dunno, I'd still call it 2D. Even when the angles shift the gameplay is still talking place on a 2D plane. My only issue with it is that there's so much movement and color in the backgrounds that you can't see a lot of the bullets coming at you at the higher difficulty levels - they blend in way too well!

      The SNES launched in North America with two space shooters, Darius Twin and Super R-Type. SRT looks and plays like a souped up NES game. DT looks and feels like a truly next gen (at the time) space shooter. Still, SRT outsold it by a significant margin.

    How do you do the last stage? I breezed through most of the rest of the game (Once you have full weapons you are practically invincible as long as you hold the buttons down and don't crash into things). I got up to the final stage with 4 extra lives, full weapons and shields... and I last about 15 seconds before I'm dead. The biggest problem is the bulky spider-like thing that drops from the top and shoots those ring-shaped projectiles. They seem to be random so it's really hard to predict where I should put myself to avoid getting hit.

    • @NintendoComplete
      @NintendoComplete  6 лет назад +1

      tchntm43 For that spider thing that shoots rings, my usual way to deal with him is to sit on his left just above or below his the center of his body. That way, if the rings go directly left, you can stay still and not be hit, and if the go diagonally toward you can move just a bit to line up with his middle again and they'll fly past. The less you move, the easier the pattern is to deal with. Not that I always can focus to do that, sometimes I'll panic flail at the last second and get hit anyway lol, just still, it's as solid of a strategy as I've ever seen for them.

    I remember when I was younger - My cousin brought this over to my house and let me have a go. Til this day I think this was the most daunting/unforgiving shmup I've played - I just remember the bosses also looking very intimidating. Another Nemesis of mine (Gradius III was the only shooter on Super NES I could beat sadly :( ) what pisses me off how sometimes I don't see the bullets and I get slaughtered like a damn sheep. Have gotten to the final zone but since it's more or less a boss gauntlet... I fail. Have you beaten Super Earth Defense Force too? I can't get the final boss pattern down. What advice could you offer for Darius Twin to ensure a victory? May starting coming to you for hints and tips for games you have seen ending screens to that I haven't *end rant*

    • @NintendoComplete
      @NintendoComplete  8 лет назад +1

      It's been awhile since I've played EDF, I'd have to go back to it to jog my memory. For this one, though, I think the biggest thing is to only get one of the weapon change power ups (goes to orange lasers) and just keep upgrading that one. It's final form is a huge wave that's way better than the ball one that you get from upgrading the default weapon. If you pick up the second change icon, it switches you back to the default weapon (so weak final weapon). If I remember right, you can also hang out above the right side of your score in the first stage and nothing can hit you there.

      I really liked the game when I was a teenager as I rented it. I couldn't figure out how to get passed the part where water filled up on screen but when working on it the other night I was like " is there a reason I was given a earthquake staff?" I used it at that part a platform came down for me to use! yay! the last stage is damn hard with unfair enemy enemy placement but I think those bees are the real deal breaker as they are hard to hit!

    Sagaia on the Genesis was way better with it close to the arcade sound track with big explosion after every boss battle... for the SNES i prefer Super Nova or the japanese version Darius Force.

    • @Bloodreign1
      @Bloodreign1 3 года назад +1

      Well the 2 SNES Darius titles were pretty much home console exclusives, unlike Darius II/Sagaia on the Genesis.The arcade Darius II was known for it's bosses exploding quite spectacularly, and with a nice BOOM to them. The sitdown cabs, due to the game being 2 screens, had speakers within the seats, and you'd fell the feedback from the explosions. MAME tries to emulate that (and to a fault, Darius II on Taito Memories on PS2), without those seats, it just doesn't feel right at all (the Saturn version doesn't try to emulate the bass explosions, but the explosion sounds are still nice anyway).

    This has to be one of the most generic shooters ive ever seen. The enemy ships animate and float around like paper cut outs.,
    its like minimal animation for everything. The movement patterns are just repeated through each level . that one crab that drops out from the top and floats around has a programmed pattern even in the last level where 3 of them just appear from the top and float around. The mechanics of all the enemies is so cookie cutter its hilarious. It just looks silly most the time and lazy . theres little to no variation for enemy patterns and they just repeat level to level. hard to believe these SNES games were $70 then.

    • @Bloodreign1
      @Bloodreign1 3 года назад

      Is it better? No, but it is a fantastic game nonetheless, and a good port. Remember, that was built as an arcade game, and developers had to fight for that players quarter or yen in a sea of arcade games. This is a home exclusive Darius game, and wasn't built for arcades, so Taito built it graphically for a home system. Sagaia/Darius II on Genesis is a port, so Taito did as best as they could to directly port the game over, keeping the game mostly intact. This game is still a nice looking game, so is Darius Force, the second SNES in the Darius series (amazing how a lot of games that saw release on both consoles, usually had more sequels on SNES than on the Genesis, developers went where the money making was).
      For a long time, the ultimate way to play Darius II was not on the Genesis, or PC Engine CD, but on the Sega Saturn.
