Does this Ram AEV Prospector XL have you rethinking full-size overland rigs? [Adventure Ready 004]

- After watching this beast walk all over the Poughkeepsie wall and over many other trails in southwest Colorado... I have to say it's making us slightly rethink our position on full size overland builds.

Prospector XL has been my dream overland vehicle every since I discovered they exist!!! For now, its a 4Runner SR5…. A man can dream tho…
4Runners are awesome too. :)
do not,,buy any,,,vehicle with ifs...
Sweet!! This was a fun video to do. Thanks Kevin!!
My Ram 3500 walks over everything my Toyota and Jeep buddies use lockers for. Add a front locker to that AEV and it's near unstoppable. I'm glad these trucks are finally getting noticed as a capable offroad vehicle.
Looks like a great set up for both solo trips and the family. Thanks for sharing 👍
i just ordered this top 2 weeks ago for my 2022 Limited 3500 8' bed and this video just extended my shopping list :)
Currently I’m torn between a midsize SUV and a small camper trailer, or something like the Prospector XL. With some smart and efficient packing I think I can carry everything I need for a family of 4 or 5 in the Prospector, but with the trailer you can basecamp easily and fit in smaller spaces, but that Prospector is just so cool!
The RAM Rebel 2500 with the AEV package would be amazing!
I love my 4 door LONG bed cummins. I literally have a house queen mattress inside my topper, and still have room for a fridge and storage at the foot. I also don’t have to look like a bro with all of my gear strapped to the top/side/back. My goal was to have no gear on the outside. It goes on 99% of trails I’ve wanted to do. I’m not doing the rubicon in it, but most people won’t anyways.
You won't "do" most trails most other people do either...
@@matthewschiebout7384 not “most” people as most are only mall crawlers
Yah, these are just paid advertisers. I can’t believe how much money is wrapped up in that rig. It’s laughable.
@@Oldrush sounds like someone is jealous they dont have the same amount of cash to spend on toys. Stings don’t it?😂
Such a great setup. The habitat was a strong contender for me when I was looking for a solid, “lightweight” camper solution.
I like it better than the alucab, but only a little. What you have has way more bells and whistles. And I love bells and whistles.
@@SwellRunnerJason your truck looks great with the Habitat. I have one on my F350 and love it. When you run the Buddy Heater all night which window flaps are you using to vent? Thx
I've had two 4 runners, an 80 series Land Cruiser, two Tacomas, an FJ, and a Tundra. A couple years ago I bought a 2012 Ram 2500 with the Cummins because it's low miles, pre-def, and I needed it for farm work. However, it also doubles as a mild overland/ camping rig. I love it! I look at the AEV's as inspiration for how I would someday like to have my truck set up. A full size truck is so great. We took a ten day trip around Big Bend National Park in a Tacoma and it was miserable. No room at all for something like that. The Tacoma fits in tighter spots but the Ram is big enough to just knock stuff down if it's in your way. Ha ha jk
I watch both of y'all's channels and enjoy them very much. Take care.
Did you mean a 2002? I think the emissions crap came in 2007 model year.
toyota,,too gutless,, too expensive,, too small..why,,oh why,,did you buy an fj..why...there a prado with a different body..the taco,,good with an sas..only good toyota,,is a nissan gu..better. mechanically..toyota lost the plot..between the 60 & 80 series.. then went off world..
My dream truck! That thing is by far the baddest ass truck that I’ve ever seen!
Very interesting walk around, which gave me a couple of ideas for the future. Thanks, and until next time... Travel safe.
If wishing for one of these is rethinking, I'd say hell yes!
Great rig. Thanks for sharing it with us!
Great walk around by two OGs of overland.
I’ve wondered what happened to Swell Runner! He’s one of the main reasons I bought a 4Runner, glad to see y’all together and doing well.
Nice walk around, thank you!
A very fine/capable vehicle. I have similar full size setup. CCLB Diesel, flatbed popup camper, also own a AEV Gladiator. Both are great, one is better for tighter trails, the other goes about 95% of the trails, but is a much more comfortable setup for "overlanding"/truck camping. Hells revenge, gladiator, a month on baja beaches, yeah full size all the way!
actually scratch that, I love this set up
Wow that truck looks and functions so well...
That might be something I get into in future.
The day that I see myself owing a truck like that is when i no longer have a mortgage and my kids out of the house, that's the holy grill of the off-road. Not necessary for now but dreaming for now is fascinating lol. Currently have f-150 super crew with leveling kit and 33". I am super blessed already and can't think enough the new adventures that having a car like that can attribute to the family. God+family=4x4 for life. That's the formula. Lol ❤️🇺🇲
I traded up and made money in vehicles, over years… and was able to buy this outright. I would never get a loan for something like this. Definitely need to have financials in order to do many things in life.
@@SwellRunner thank you for all the hard work and dedication. I remember watching the video from Anza Borrego and from there I started going out like never before and have seen many beautiful places. Thanks again for the inspiration and your passion. Many blessings your way
Wow that's a awesome truck!!
Beautiful car, very nice review. Super, thanks!
Absolutely a beautiful rig! I'll have to stick with my Power Wagon on 35s though!
Looking good !! very nice setup
honestly I love it. I wanted to think about a new truck for the future, and was thinking of going smaller (Tacoma or colorado) as I have a 05 silverado back home still while I have been in Japan. The Ram has always been a truck i loved. If I can move up to this after some time I think it would be worth it if I can afford it.
Thats awesome that hes a patron even though he has some scars from a previous trip. LOL I still remember watching him go back after that rock and you had your rhythm going and boom it happened. Oh by the way, congratulations on your little one coming. exciting news. You all sure kept a good secret.
I currently have a built out ZR2 that is awesome off-road vehicle but upgrading to this truck due to the lower tow rating of the ZR2. I LOVE this rig!!!❤❤
Perfect! I love Ram. I have an 2012 2500
Great review of Jason's truck. Last time I saw it was at OEX right after he bought it. Looks like he is really dialing it in.
👍👍👍👍👍, Great interview/walk through.
That brush guard is amazing!
Awesome rig
Inspiring
Awesome setup!
Epic truck! Looks like a blast
It's a great way to stay within the GVW limits of your exploration vehicle. We recently changed from a 4 runner for that very reason. Does not take much gear to be over GVW. We now have a 2500 and GFC and love the set up
Yeah look at all the overloaded mid size on RUclips and Instagram. Good thing for them it's not against the law like other places like Australia. Or that insurance companies haven't really gone after them in an accident.
It was a motivating factor when I made the switch. I can stay under GVWR AND still have passing power on the highway! Oh and mpg’s are better than my 4runner. But then diesel is a lot more expensive. 😅
@@SwellRunner Love your setup. I have 3 kids so taking all 5 of us with decent room for people and stuff takes a lot of space. I have been looking at a PowerWagon.
@Perry,
Our GVWR -- 29,000#.
Our weight across the scale -- 14,000#.
Cargo capacity -- about seven ton.
GCWR -- 53,000#.
@@largemarge1603 what vehicle are you exploring with?
Amazing rig bravo
The real benefit of the AEV build is that they are considered the manufacturer so it is not considered lifted. That is the stock height so if you live in an area that restricts lifts there are no worries.
Yes!!
Fantastic vehicle...I want one, no doubt. Do I give up my incredible capable 2021 power wagon with lockers, disconnecting sway bar and all the goodies already invested and installed, that's the question. Currently running 35's which to me is as big as you can go and still maintain somewhat decent gas mileage as I also tow an off road trailer 🤔. Then there's the additional 25-30K one needs to invest. Did I mention I really would love one. Thanks guys, great video, I really enjoyed it
I mean. It’s not the most practical. But that’s not why I bought it.
AEV is badass but your PW can go everywhere the AEV does... but if you don't mind spending the extra 25-30k then go for it bro!
I don't think you mentioned it but, the Werner scaffold is a brilliant solution!
I take it with me always!
Just viewed the other video from your friend. Loved your video. Greetings from the Netherlands
Prospector is BOSS !!
“I really like the special plaque”
Spoken like a true over-lander 😂. Very nice setup though!
Nice review
I love that truck. Bad ass rig.
🙏
I've had 2 door jeeps, 4runners, FJC. A buddy made me an offer I couldn't refuse on an F150 Raptor and though I wasn't really looking for a fullsize truck now I would never go back! Bring all the gear, all the kids, all the dogs. Wheelbase + 4wd + locker + powah gets you over anything where breakover and departure isn't an issue, haha! But for camping rather than trying to do challenging wheeling fullsize is the way to go.
Raptors are awesome. I’ve considered buying one many times.
@@SwellRunner They are, but the payload isn't there and they're not crawlers. What you have is WAY better for your purposes.
Great set up. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Nice PW. Hello from Russia, we too love Ram.
I just bought a mega cab Cummins prospector XL, Picked it up this morning. Incredible vehicle. Nothing like it !! Traded in my hummer h1.
What kind of fuel Mileage are you getting?
@@mikemerino3986 I drive mostly highway 70mph, I get 15.8 on shorter drivers and longer drivers it’s above 16mpg. If you’re doing 80mph you’ll see it decrease to 13.5mpg.
Would love to see Fotornr, Trail Recon and Swellrunner go on a Ram Trail trip one day!
Haha. That would be epic.
@trailrecon
I remember this guy and his Overland Toyota videos that were awesome but I was wondering when he was going to go for a larger vehicle and Doge is my 1st pick as well 🤗
Automatic Wag Bag! Awesome.
Actual title "Does this Ram AEV Prospector XL make me look fat" LOL that is one fantastic looking and well equipped truck, dreams for my retirement. Thanks for sharing this!
QMC , Quality Meatl Craft, was one of my customers. I would see a number of AEV parts that they made. The quality control was so good that their scrapped parts would be purchased from the scrap yard and sold online. The lawyers had to send out cease and desist letters every so often.
Speaking of those little touches?? You know a person is enjoying themselves in the backcountry or overlanding when you see dust on the headrest area.
I don’t own an overlander or even a 4WD as I use my 2WD Ram Laramie 3500 6.7 DRW for towing purposes only but I do admire all the extras that are added to a truck like this.
✌🏽😜🇺🇸🤘🏽
No lockers no skid plates this dude has balls lol 3:12
Awesome truck! I currently own a Gladiator but this is making me miss my power wagon 😢
I was thinking about going to a Powerwagon from my Mojave…. What say you?
@@Propelled it’s a toss up. To me the lifted gladiator has a cooler look to it. But now that i have a VW wagon for commuting I’d probably go with the power wagon for overall usefulness. Two car seats fit 10xs better in a power wagon. And overall it’s more comfortable for sure.
thanks
Beast 💪🏻👍👍
Id love to see a power wagon and prospect xL through trails together
Are you thinking of dropping the factory spare tire and utilizing the space? I've heard of people installing on board air systems or auxiliary fuel tanks? Just curious what your thoughts are for a good way to use it.
All about the full size adventure rigs, hard to beat sitting high, on higher horsepower, with big boy tires, and all that space.
👍keep rolling
Nice Texas Pintripes bruh. This is a badass rig. I'm definitely going to do one of these eventually. I'm a geologist in real life and this would be the ultimate field vehicle.
Also the patches on the under-seat. Love it. I didn't know what to do with these patches I have.
They have sliders w drop down steps though I don’t know what is available for the hd ram
Once you close the rear tire, do still have the hitch option if you want to tow a camper?
just wondering if we could order one that is not lifted. really like the 40 tires but wish it sits lower.....
When it comes to weight capacity, space, power, and relative efficiency, the full size just wins out every time. On the east coast where there's a lot of tight trails in the forest, maybe not because in certain cases they just won't physically fit. But if I were out west, I would definitely do a full-size rig. Look at the guys on Fullsize Invasion in Moab, It's nuts how capable those trucks are. Even with me being on the east coast, I've had an urge to sell my 4Runner in favor of a full-size.
It’s tight on some trails out east. Something to consider for sure.
I have been overlanding my F150 since 2015, before overlanding was cool. For true overlanding full size is the only way to go.
I agree.. more comfort and more options. Just stay off the tight trails
Exactly, I overland my f150 as well and it has been awesome. Then again I’m not some idiot who is going to risk my rig rock climbing attempting some sketchy trail.
@@chrisbryan6493 why stay off tight trails?
@@javimartinez1801 I've taken my truck on sketchy trails. I've done fins n things in Moab
Hi guy! Great video! What is The name of The ha pane se portabile toilet please?
Awesome vid, Jason is a really cool guy to have in our community. Always gives great advice if I ask him anything rig related.
I’m packing a FWC camper on mine. I’ve talked with guys with gladiators whom are getting worse MPG than me!
what is your 4runner roof camper brand ?
Do they add lockers to the AEV ram?
I bought my AEV all done and ready to go from my local Ram dealer. With a Snorkel in 2015. Mines a power wagon with lockers and 37's. Diesel is not a true Snorkel because it has more than one intake for Diesel. Gas is sealed.
Super cool... is the Rams bed 6' or 8' ?
You don't need 40k of extras. Just a 6'' lift 35's Carli sway bar, your choice of shock. All Rams ride like Caddy's
What is the type of tent setup on prospector XL???
We need new prospector xl gear on overland style!
I think it's awesome. I worry about fitting on mountain passes in Colorado with how wide a full size is
Colorado trails have rarely been an issue for me. I’ve had size problems elsewhere though
Where can we find the white ram patch at 11:20?
Beast of a truck. Is that the 6 cylinder Cummins diesel engine in there?
Did the “I won’t go too deep, just the tip” bit go right over Jason’s head, or what? 😂
Probably.
I was really surprised to hear it doesn't have at least a rear locker, but I guess it's all based on the vehicle you choose from the start. I see ARB lockers in your near future haha!
arb sht,,too expensive, too heavy duty,,they break axles..detroit locker the go..from an ausie..
I wouldn't start out without lockers
Can you order a mega cab version ?
Have a Ram 2500 build w A/T habitat. Use my JLU build the most. Ideally u have a heavy and light build a couple of hundred thousand later ur set! My Ram 2500 has front and rear lockers. I’d at least have a rear locker.
the Prospector XL could do with a Prospector L variant that will feature slightly smaller modified wheel arch (wheel well) than the ones in the XL which is understandable due to the 40.0 in. A/T tyres . . . a bit smaller wheel arch (wheel well) in terms of the circumference of the wheel arch (both front & back, especially the front ones) but cavernous enough inside the wheel well to easily accommodate a 35.0 in. & 37.0 in. tyre plus a 4.0 in. suspension lift with space to spare for extreme wheel travel . . . but not 40.0 in. . . . the base Prospector just won't do . . .
Jason is already on the slippery slope into a pop-up slide in...especially since his toilet is electric and he uses a heater regularly...appears the time will come VERY soon!
Does this truck have the Cummins diesel or the 6.4 Hemi?
AEV used too use power wagons for their builds. Having everything under warranty Sounds good....till you need something. I waited four months too get my winch fixed by the dealer. The dealer said the winch was made by Warn, and Warn said they just sold Ram a bunch of winches...🤬🤬
What happened to the white truck Jason had?
Morning Kevin, Jason. 2 quick questions 4 Jason, what suspension/ shocks r u running on ur PXL??? 2nd question, what's the company that u purchased ur topper/ tent from??? Didn't c anything listed below in ur links. Happy Holidays, Kevin & Jason, & 2 ur families. Keep the videos coming!!!🐊😎🍻🤙
Hey Sam - I’m running AEV’s dual sport suspension. That comes with a nice setup from bilstein. Details are in the aev website. The topper is from AT Overland - their habitat model.
Damn that's sexy. I'm working on my full size Ford to be very similar to the Prospector. SWELL's has a very good looking truck.
Thank you. 🙏
@@SwellRunner you are welcome
Maybe Jason will let you borrow it for a bit to test out
Jason has a kick ass rig there. Granted it's tipping the scales at almost $150K, but man, if you can, why not!
You can build a XL on any ram HD trim.. it’s around 35k$ extra.. if you wanted a budget prospector for @85k$ not bad if you think about it
How much did it cost to have AEV setup everything?
One thing that aev has overlooked is using the AAM axle. 9.25 front and rear 11.5. There wheel bearings aren't meant for anything over a 33. Guys in the power wagon community know about it but guys rip through wheel bearings when going to 40s. There also isn't any regear options out yet for this newest gen. I found all this out and will not be buying one since to have a fully dialed setup it will need dana 60 front, dana 80/14bolt rear.
Correction aam was rams choice but aev didn't address fixing the issue for there design.
Love the truck. FYI, the engine and trans are not the same as the 4th gen. Similar but not the same.
When it comes to trucks! Nothing beats the 2nd row of the Crew Max rigs, I wish Toyota would have done something like that 2nd row. That makes me wanna sell my Tacoma and Land Cruiser for a RAM 2500 or larger!
What are the tire sizes?
What size fuel tank?
