Good to use mirror, less UV to unwrap and also apply to other side of model.
If you have a symmetrical model it's definitely a good idea. However if you want each side to be unique you can better not use the mirror ofcourse!

I Love Blender but its texture painting power is honestly years behind other tools like 3D coat or Substance Painter, if you're doing it as a hobby then sure, the free aspect of Blender justifies this, but if you have any plan for using this skill professionally, then texturing with Blender is a waste of time, literally because it forces you to waste a lot of time on things that are out of the box and extremely easy/intuitive in other tools, like layers and all sort of masks, the exact same simple-modeling texturing could be done in less than an hour in Substance, while in Blender you'll spend at least x3 that time just "preparing things".
Thanks for the tutorial though, this is still useful information of course!
Yeah I agree. 3rd party software, specialized for texture painting is waaaay better. Now do I feel Blender is good enough for simpler, stylized work? Yeah, it is. It’s not perfect but everything is there if you’re good enough at drawing. Plus there’s just too many people not able to pay the exorbitant prices software ask for (looking at you Adobe 🤨).
Nonetheless is getting used to drawing, shading by hand if you will, a good skill to learn and one that in it’s basics is possible to be learned in Blender.
Thanks for your insights! 🙏🏻
Very goid,We want more tuxtur painting game assets🎉
Thank you so much! All the other tutorials are subpar at best, but this felt like watching a paid class!!
Wow, thanks for the kind words!
Very good tutorial. If I want to use the clone brush on the 2D left-hand window, how do I set the clone from point? Control click doesn't work the same in this window. I know I've done it before, but I've forgotten how.
It’s right mouse button and dragging the control point to the desired location! Thanks!
@@KaizenTutorials that doesn't seem to work. I've tried right mouse button, left mouse button and several different key combinations. There is no control point to drag around.
Weird… maybe reset the workspaces to blender default? See if somehow something got changed…
@@KaizenTutorials I can't find any video tutorials that show it either. Why does everyone leave that out? Also, choosing which image you want to paint on. I was getting this error message that some image was missing, but none seemed to be missing. Turns out I hadn't chosen the image I wanted to paint on. None of the tutorials I've watched mentioned that.
FINALLY! This tutorial is exactly what I was looking for after so long.
Is there a way to mirror texture painting asides from using a 3rd party software on the UV image? I'm thinking about how handy a mirror-painting feature would be at, say, 16:04
At the top of the window if you scroll you can navigate left or right and you'll find an icon that looks like a butterfly. It has XYZ next to it and this is where you can enable mirror textures on XYZ axis.
@@KaizenTutorials That's awesome. Thank you!
Great tutorial, thanks!
You're welcome!
Wow im early! Great video!

Great tutorial tysm! But is there any way to paint what you're doing on one side of the y axis to the other side of the y axis?
mirror you mean? There's a mirror option, but I'm not sure if that's what you need...
A good tip imho is, set ur Cam-Roll on Keybinding (For me it's shift+rightclick+drag) This makes the workflow SO MUCH easier! Trust me! :D

Followed this tonight and very helpful - although some of the hotkeys seem to have changed? Example is the colour picker and f keys don't seem to do anything..
Thanks! Hmm F still works for me, but yeah they seem to have changed the color picker.
@@KaizenTutorials Any idea what's the new shortcut for the color picker on the texture paint viewport?
Is there a video I can watch to know what to do next ? Once I'm done painting the colors do not appear in the layout. Thx again for this tutorial it helped a lot
Im not sure what you mean? You might need to save your textures before continuing.
How much would be the recommended bleed for a 4k texture?
Twice the amount so 32px! 8px for 1K, 4px for 512x512. Etc!
@@KaizenTutorials thank you!
when i press "A" to select all, pressing "U" isnt brining up the menu to unwrap the model. the model im trying to texture is around 55k polygons so idk if it being that high poly has an affect or not.
That’s strange, as far as i know this shouldnt be a problem. You have to be in edit mode to unwrap though, so make sure you are!
Hi, i have problem with UV unwrap. Why I can not see my uv when I move to texture painting? And thanks for the tutorial. This is great.
You need to have your object selected for the UV's to show up. So be in edit mode and select everything with A.

if I want to use an image in my camera to paint onto my model, I go into uv editing and the picture is far away from the uv's. would you know the reasoning for this?
you can zoom in with ctrl I believe. There's some weird controls to move the stencil around, mostly involving ALT, CTRL and SHIFT with mouse buttons. Try playing around with that.
Does anyone know where I could find information to do the same thing but with several procedural textures? I'm experimenting and moving forward but I don't think it was that complicated.
Yes you can! I have a video on creating 'professional' materials which shows the process of doing this with procedural textures!
bro when you explain, keep the recording on blender, we need to see to learn etc. you can always put a camera record in the corner or something
Nice video overall
Thanks! I have it on Blender as much as I think is necessary to teach the subject but I’ll look and see if I can tweak this!
When i want to paint with the brush the whole blade becomes the color, the longer i hold the darker it gets. Another problem is that only the blade of the sword is smh affected by the painting. I cant paint anything else and my window left is just black, nothing else lol.
That's weird. Maybe you have a big brush size? Are you usingh my model? Is not you should make sure the model is joined using CTRL+J and is unwrapped aswell. Select the model hit U and Smart UV Project. It could also be something with a weird brush setting. Maybe you're not using the default brush?
Thanks for the basics, this is way more than enough for my cartoon-type drawing!
Glad it was helpful!
Hello! I've been having a problem when switching to Texture Paint and it's driving me crazy. Basically I have my done my UV map of a low poly red panda, but when I switch to texture painting it doesn't appear. Now when adding a texture it "appears" but it's not the same. I can't color on it and I can't do anything. I've been having other problems like a very pixellated coloring in the areas that I select. If you could help me in any ways it would be appreciated! (Im new to blender btw)
Hmm I'm not sure what you mean. The pixelated thing could be to your UV unwrap and due to the texture size. If you have a 1024x1024 texture it's going to look pixelated. Maybe your UV's got messed up, try unwrapping again. It should work if you have a decent unwrap and add a new base texture in the texture paint workspace.
@@KaizenTutorials Thanks! I have found a different way to fix it by adding materials in shading mode and assigning the colours to the parts of my low poly red panda. Thank you very much though! I'm definitely going to try on my other models to fix the problem!!
whenever i unwrap a model (im using blender 4.0) it doesnt turn pink and when i try to texture paint it doesnt show up on the model
Did you add a texture slot like base color to it? Also make sure the image texture is plugged into the BSDF in the shading tab.
@@KaizenTutorials thanks, that really helps out
But how do you paint a character made up of multiple objects? I wanted to have a single texture and uv map for each object but i can't do that
You can have multiple materials. Each part has a material with it's own texture painted textures
For some reason when I paint, the brush draws on the opposite side of the model, like it's going through the faces I'm looking at and painting the back faces. Any clue why it's doing that?
i want to try this with a simple metaball but no matter what i do, no kind of UV shows up when selecting it, i just dont get it
I don't think Metaballs have UV's, or can have UV's. But I might be wrong on that though.
uhh...i can't unwrap my model, it WAS just a sculpted sphere so idk if that has something to do with it, but yeah, i dont know what to do and if you could help that would be great!
Is it a very highpoly mesh? This can result in issues sometimes. But yeah it should work, even if it's a sculpted object. Make sure to use Projected uv unwrap, just to try if it works.
hey when I'm painting my model it acts like symmetry mode is on so it paint the other side of the mesh to why is it doing this?
Probabl;y beceause you have a mirror modifier on your model. This means one side is an exact copy, including the UV's.
Follow the method at 2:00 by the way, its better
this is amazing,, but can you help me.. i have problem while doing texture painting, sometimes the texture i draw is appear randomly in the other part of my object...,
in this case, i want to add a line in my armor in belly part, but the line also appear in back part of the armor.., while i adding a line in my character face, the line is appear in the hand to., do you have any suggestion? thank you
Are you maybe using a mirror modifier or something? Usually it's either that or the unwrap is not good enough!
@@KaizenTutorials nope, the mirror modifier already applied..,, oh yeah 1 more thing,, if i try to texture painting on my character lips, the painting look criple, do you know whats im doing wrong and how to fix it.
Weird. Not sure what’s going wrong to be honest. How did you unwrap it? Did you do a proper manual unwrap (which you need for characters) or did you do the uv project?
@@KaizenTutorials i forget how many face unwrap tutorial i follow and its always end with crimpling result.
Sorry i don’t understand what you mean.
Quick question, when painting with less than 100% strength, is there a way to not overlap the colours? Like if im painting with 20% strength, can my painting not overlap so it stays 20% and not be 40% on some parts? Like how it happened when you were painting the light marks on the blade, there is an awkward bit that is way brighter than the rest of the painting because you painted over it more than once
That’s a good question! But no not as far as I know. That’s why people usually prefer paid software such as Substance over this for texture painting. I usually just go with low strength and just make lots of strokes. That way it blends pretty well. You can also smear and smooth afterwards using the different brushes to create a better fade!
Each stroke layers, so you'd have to either mask separate areas or do it in one pass. Which could be done easier by a bigger brush and farther away. Or the opposite depending on the situation, but a soft brush makes this task easier too rather than a hard edged brush.
Yes, you can turn accumulate off.
@@oversalt4713 how do I do that? I cannot find that setting anywhere, if you can, can you tell me of a youtube video that shows it?
@@dimitriosmantzidis4816 hey man, under the brush settings (press n to bring these up), click on the advanced drop down and either check or uncheck accumulate. It's a bit weird though, just tested it again now and it seems to basically just turn opacity to 100% but I may be wrong.
I'M BLUE!
p.s.: i know its a painting tutorial, not an UV tutorial, but you should have made aware newbie that is indeed important to make good UVs. People will try making higher rez textures, with more complex objects, and will find hard to do anything with it, at least you could have used a lower pixel margin, that would have helped many users
Haha love that song! Nostalgia to the max. But yeah I could’ve maybe dug a little deeper on that part! It is indeed very important to get a good unwrap. In this case a simple one is sufficient but for more complex you should get a decent, manually unwrapped model for sure. Thanks for the feedback!
@@KaizenTutorials np :), still a good video with excellent editing, appreciated the reply.
Thank you!
hello i'm sorry i'm very new to this but my texture doens't paint anything i dont know if it is because i have a mouse or what but i did everything till putting the active texture and still nothing is happening
Mouse shouldn't be an issue. Try one of these things;
- Make sure your object is UV unwrapped.
- Make sure you added a base color texture in the texture workspace
- Try doing it on a cube, this has automatic UV's and you only need to add a texture and it should work
Hi, can you please share how you have made the video thumbnail?
I sure can! I did a render of the sword model with the texture and one without. This was a close-up render in Blender. Then for the background I did a simple plane with a color and then some lights to get the fade.
I took those into photoshop, combined the two sword renders and masked the color version out to make it look like paint. Added in the background on a separate layer! Text elements and logo and finally the tablet drawing hand and some speed lines which I just got from Google to add some movement and sense of motion to it all!
Hope that helps 🙌🏻
@@KaizenTutorials thank you very much
Nice Tut, but you forget one thing if the messed up the model... how to erase texture?
You can set the brush mode from mix to alpha eras or erase alpha to erase stuff.
@@KaizenTutorials I tried that but, it just turns the area I want erase in the same color as the one I want erase 🤷
@coreragestudios3430 that’s weird??? It works for me…
you used 16 px margin for a 2K image, does this mean that if you make a 1K texture you should use a 8 px margin?
Yeah it does!
So when I try to paint with the brush (step at 5:05) nothing comes up at all. I've gone back and rechecked the video and started over to re-follow along and still nothing. I can't paint on the model itself nor the UV map. I've messed with other tools and the fill bucket works, but not the brush. Any ideas?
Nevermind, I figured it out! For anyone else that might have the same issue, I messed with assigning base color materials before backtracking and trying to texture paint so that might be it. I had to reopen the file that I saved before I did anything material-wise and followed the tutorial again to get it working. Thank you for the tutorial!
Aah glad you got it sorted, thanks for sharing your solution!
Thanks so much. First texturing video that was easy to follow along and had great results!! TYSM
Glad it was helpful, thanks!
I finished my rexture paint but when i try to make a render is messing everything up can somebody help me
Whats going wrong when you render then?
how to erase that texture paint , i was working on something and accidently drew somethin and then i saved the project but how the hell i can remove that , please help
You can erase by changing the brush from mix to erase alpha! Should be able to do that somewhere in the top left in the texture paint workspace.
@@KaizenTutorials i did exactly that but it is erasing the textures too , i want to know how to erase only paint but yeah thanks for replying.
When I draw, the brush goes through the model and only colors if it’s on the inside of the model
Your normals are probably flipped. Select your entire mesh in Edit mode and hit ALT+N and Flip normals. That will probably work!
@@KaizenTutorials your a great help
For me, whenever i exit the texture paint menu/option, the mesh goes back to plain gray until i open texture paint again
That’s probably because you’re not in material or rendered view in the other workspaces. So press Z and change the view to rendered or material viewport! Then it should pop up :-)
@@KaizenTutorials How do we transfer that painting we did so it shows up in rendered?
Ok now I’m confused again, how do I make it stay that color all throughout the different stations (specifically animation) because it keeps going back to its gray form
I'm not sure I follow. The texture is applied to the UV's, so if you save the texture after painting it it should just stick to the model no matter what.
hey, so I have this problem, when i'm going on 'Tool' in any mode, the 'Texture slots' tab doesnt appear
it seems to be in the header bar at the top above the brush settings. i was having trouble looking for it too for a little while
They changed that in 4.0 I believe.
@@KaizenTutorials ooooh thanks, both of u, i managed to paint the model at some point but tbh i dont even know how
hello! is there a way to erase?
CTRL+Z is all I know of...
for a beginner level make sense to paint on one panel square. my head isn't ready to to learn around a knockoff sword. I just want to paint on a square to make a quick guide on what I want to model.
if you just want to sketch a concept you're better of using grease pencil. Texture painting is way to tedious for that.
i forgot I commented on this, but I can't seem to paint like you. I can't seem to color right on it. I don't have the UI to choose color in side the window. I'm using 3.6 to make some CC for sims 4. @@KaizenTutorials
1:20 right off the bat, I don't get this drop down when I click that.

What if you have a model with multiple parts?

I dont have the pink texture and I down know how to fix it can you please help
you have to add an empty texture slot first. In 4.0 it has moved to the top of the texture paint main window UI
nice bro😄😄😄😄
Thanks!
hey for some reason it wont let me paint on my model. i think i did everything right up until you put the texture on. you seem to be able to draw immediately after doing so, but it doesnt work for me
Have you unwrapped your model?
@@KaizenTutorials yeah, i did it like you did in the tutorial
That’s weird… if you have a uv unwrap and a texture added it should work. You can check to see if your texture is plugged into the shader in the shader editor
@@KaizenTutorials I’ll try that, by chance, I have a material on my model, would that have anything to do with it? Or no
Six months late with this, but for the sake of anyone else having this issue, yeah, that is the problem - I've just had the same trouble myself and removing the other material fixed it. :-)
What happens when you go in texture paint and it’s not pink and there’s no “no textures” box????
Nvm I figured it out, it was in a different spot
glad you got it fixed!
I just dont get id for some reason the busch wont work if i do the fill thing it works or the mask thing that works too but the stupid brush just wont work btw im at 6:14 rn
not sure why that is. Have you tried creating a new texture? Is the texture not solid black? Is the brush a different color and does it have a strength value higher than 0? You can try recalculating the normals on your object to see if that works. Did you properly unwrap the model?
the UV projection isn't going to the texture painting anyone know how to fix that?
I don’t understand what you mean!
How to paint the faces of the object with the paint pot?
As in painting singular faces?
@@KaizenTutorials correct, how can I paint only the faces of my model, since manually it is very difficult
The best way would be to create face masks for selected faces like I show in the video, you can paint these.
Thanks ill watchvideo again and try☺️👍🏻
