The current third generation of the Ghibli (Tipo M157) was unveiled at the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show. The Ghibli is offered with three different 3.0-litre V6 engines: a twin-turbocharged 330 PS (243 kW; 325 hp) or 410 PS (302 kW; 404 hp) petrol and a 275 PS (202 kW; 271 hp) turbodiesel, making the Ghibli the first Maserati production car to be powered by a diesel engine. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard on all models; all wheel drive is available with the most powerful V6, although not in right hand drive markets.
It's pronounced "gib-lee" and it's named for an African desert wind-the perfect name for a hot Italian sedan. With its deliciously curved lines, the 2020 Maserati Ghibli's looks are backed up by what's under the hood: a twin-turbocharged V-6 engine offered in either 345- or 424-hp guise. Not only does the Ghibli's engine provide quick acceleration, it also sounds fantastic, especially when Sport mode is engaged and the exhaust system opens itself up for a throatier growl. Despite its Italian-ness and a host of fancy optional extras, as a mid-size luxury car, the Ghibli doesn't quite measure up. It borrows too many cheap interior bits from the Fiat-Chrysler parts bin to pull off its upscale price tag. Rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz E-class and Audi A6 offer more modern tech and luxury features as standard.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The base setup for the Ghibli is a 345-hp twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 with rear-wheel drive; the S performance version has 424 horsepower, rear-wheel drive, and offers all-wheel drive (Q4 in Maserati parlance) as an option. Both engines have an eight-speed automatic transmission. We tested an S model back in 2014 and were charmed by the exotic sounds that it made. At our test track, it managed a 4.7-second zero-to-60-mph time-quick for 2014, but today it can be outrun by a non-AMG version of the Mercedes-Benz E-class. Since then, Maserati has upped the power on S models from 404 to 424 ponies. When we tested this engine in the Maserati Levante SUV, it managed a time of 5.1 seconds, so the lighter Ghibli should be noticeably quicker. The Ghibli's on-road demeanor is frisky but the trade-off is a jarring ride over rough surfaces.
Although it is based on a platform shared with the Chrysler 300, the Ghibli has its own sporty character. The Ferrari-developed V6 turbo engine is mated to a quick-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission. Handling is agile, the brakes are strong, and the engine emits a thrilling bark. But the stiff ride can grow fatiguing, the rear seat is cramped, and the Ghibli is louder than most sporty luxury sedans. Climbing in or out of this low-slung sports sedan can be a challenge. The interior is outfitted with high-quality leather and suede, and most controls are easy to use, except for the unintuitive gear selector. Chrysler's Uconnect touch screen is a plus, but it's hard not to notice some cheap-looking switches that are sourced from the Chrysler parts bins. The top-line V6 recently gained 20 hp.
The Ghibli is Maserati's more-attainable luxury sedan. It uses a Ferrari-developed 345-hp, turbo V6 mated to an eight-speed automatic, driving the rear wheels. The SQ 4 all-wheel-drive version has a 404-hp turbo V6. The platform is based on the Chrysler 300, but the Ghibli's interior, driving dynamics, and exhaust note are all Italian. Handling is sporty and agile, and the engine emits a distinctive bark. The interior is full of high quality leather and suede, and most controls are easy to use, including Chrysler's UConnect touch screen. The ride is stiff and the rear seat is cramped.

I've watched dozens of Maserati reviews and this is the best by far. Great job. I own a 2014 QP with many similarities and can relate to many items you mentioned.
Glad you reuploaded with the edit. Cant ever be too careful now days on the internet!
Good eye! Thanks!
Several years ago I leased a 2014 Quattroporte (Twin Turbo V6). I had many problems with it so I ended up having it bought back via lemon law.
Thank you for this review! I think I have looked at all Ghibli reviews there are on RUclips, over the past three years. I really enjoyed this one. So personal and frank. Next week I get delivery of a 2018 Ghibli SQ4 GranSport. I hope it has the toothpaste holder... That is truly an awesome feature :)
You’ll love it! Congrats!
What’s the difference between maserati ghibli S and SQ4 and gransport and nerissimo ? Which one is the best ?
@@hocineted7594 Well, "Q4" means four wheel drive. It's a rear wheel biased system, meaning that most of the time the car is rear wheel drive. Torque is moved to the front wheels immediately when needed. It is an excellent system, also here in Sweden with snow and ice.
GranSport is styling, both internal (seats, steering wheel,..) and external (front, sides, ..).
Nerissimo means blacked/darkened external details, like exhausts and badges.
If you ask me :), SQ4 GranSport is "the best". I personally like the chrome exhausts. But I do have the badges in gloss black.
@@narlenga so gransport looks better than nerissimo ? and is it better to buy new or used maserati which is better deal ? And I’m in Algeria how and from which country can I buy a good maserati ?
@@narlenga is it possible to find nerissimo with red interior ?
The car looks beautiful!
@Aldo Darian my comment was 10 months ago wtf....
Maseratis are cool lookers and the engine note is my favorite
Thanks for doing this review. I've been shopping for one and didn't realize you had one!
I think you're going to like it, Sirena!
Yes Monsieur your comments on the design are spot on.
Thanks, Johnny!
At 21:57 lol.. how many folks missed that?
Anyway.
I don't like rims over 18" I think it makes the car ride bad, the tires are louder and also they seem harder to balance as well.
Loved that bash at Doug Demouro
17:43 calling the paddle shifters “Flappy pedals” 😂
Thanks for making this informative and interesting review 👍🏻
I of course love Maserati's. I would have gotten one myself but the gas mileage scared me away as I drive a lot for work. Did you get rid of the Fiat?
Really love that toothpaste holder slot feature, I don't recall ever seeing it featured in other cars...
Apparently, it’s something reserved for a lucky few! ;)
Great choice in vehicle! Not boring!
Thanks!!
Peter,
I thought you had sold the Gransport. Did you buy it back or bought another ?
As an owner of GS Spyder I am curious of why you went back after buying the GT
I’m looking at getting one of these. I’m a mopar guy hardcore but these have always caught my eye. I have a 14 ram and love the interior so it makes me happy it’s similar interior. Couple questions for you.
1. What year is your car?
2. Does it have wireless charging?
3. Have you had a lot of issues with it? I only see information about people bashing these saying they are junk but more I look into it the more I realize they are upset they are getting Chrysler interior. Little do a lot of people know lambo rocks jetta interior lol so there’s that.
I’m more curious about reliability and cost of maintenance.
Guess what -- you can have these serviced at your local Dodge dealership.
@@SirenaSpadeswhat’s the difference between maserati ghibli S and Sq4 and gransport and nerissimo ? Which one is the best ?
A 10 year+ gorgeous design that the other big players (BMW and Mercedes) have borrowed more recently.
Nice review. I like the aspect that you do some of your own work and provide insight. I do agree the wheels are a weak point.
Great detailed video, I still must buy a Maserati Ghibli or Levante in my lifetime
You should! They are fun!
Where can I get the carbon fiber replacement parts?
This was a good ass review. Thanks for posting!
My U.K. compliant Ghibli came with zero spare. A first for me
Great video mate!
Nice review. I love the inside joke on the toothpaste holder.
I mean, what kind of person would criticize such a feature?
@@petervonpanda That’s literally when I stopped watching Dougs channel. His reviews are limited to “quirks”.
Excellent vid....thanks
i dont like anything but the name and engine. But for the price they are a great deal. you can find them with 50k miles for like 20k. a bargain for a maserati and the maintenance can be spendy but they are easy to work on. I have a 2015 sq4 and bought a manual fluid extractor for oil changes. Dont even have to get under the car to the drain plug. Change the oil alot more now than recommended once a year
love the personality
How much u pay for insurance
Ghibli from 2018 is even reliable than before.
the problem is it's a cheap car made to be expensive, and that shows in the quality of manufacturing
Awesome car special sound and comfort
I love the noise!!
Calling it a Chrysler 300 is a bit unfair.
Pretty car.
True, Michael! I like the 300 too though
I'm pretty sure you could do some coding on the car, to make that change to the accept button on your infotainment system. I know for BMW's you can do stuff like that.

i love this car!!! the only issue i have is reliability. i have got a second car, but i hate having a car in the delearship :S
Do you know about AC I had one in the passenger side hot
I had the same problem!! How Much Does It Cost to Repair a Maserati at the Dealership?

What did you put on the start button?
Keen eye, I put a button cover on it.... ruclips.net/video/XQDm_zFaxKM/видео.html
Hey is this car expensive to maintain?
So far, not really. I did have to have a vent fixed for $300. The oil changes are also more expensive at about $300 but it’s the cost of ownership I suppose
They should have made the V6 twin turbo Alfa in awd also not just the 2.0

AMG start-button cover in a Ghibli !? Why 🤢 ?
Review review II !
🔱❤️
Who in the hell would smoke in that car!
I would much rather have an 09 to 2012 quattroporte s that rides like a luxury car not an over glorified g37 competitor. The interior and sound are also far superior to this 90k and in 3 years 30k cookie cutter car
I have been looking for a quattroporte in those years too. They were some of my favorites especially when they got the standard transmission. Harry’s Garage did a video of his and I thought his was absolutely perfect!
Amazing cars, better tech than their bmw/ Audi counterparts and adaptive dampers and 4wd as standard
If you drive FWD go buy bloody HONDA Civic or a Accord you are not in the ball park
chrysler 300 on steroids??
Excellent example! Actually maybe - from a design standpoint - a Dodge Dart on roids.
@@petervonpanda dart even worse than 300
Horrid narraration.
Wouldn't recommend going with 20in rims. Those 18s are perfect for this car. Much better ride quality with more cushion. The bigger the rim the worse the ride, also much more blowouts and dents.
