    The trick to mounting Leica Thread Mount lenses is to set the lens on its minimum focusing distance. This retracts the rear focusing cam on the lens and it won't collide with the camera's internal rangefinder coupling arm. You can now easily align the lens to the mount. It will take more time when changing lenses but I find it helpful because it also prevents damage to the rangefinder coupling arm.

    To calibrate the Canon 7's rangefinder, you just need to remove the silver screw on the front next to the rangefinder. Its just a cap, not a real screw. Under that you can insert a philips head screwdriver and turn it to adjust the rangefinders Horizontal alignment. To adjust the vertical alignment, there is a small cap with two holes in it next to the shutter speed dial. This also hides a small flat head screw which can be turned to adjust rangefinder patch. Make sure you have a lens on and set it to infinity while adjusting. I found the vertical is better to do first, then the horizonal.

      Thanks for the info! Def gonna be doing this myself

    • @jlwilliams
      @jlwilliams 3 года назад

      Slotted, not Phillips (unless somebody lost the original.) And the vertical adjustment is super super touchy… turn it a tiny amount, check, turn again, etc.
      Re Jupiter lens, better make sure it's not dragging on the inside of your P… that might be why focusing feels stiffer. Sometime when the camera is empty, set the shutter speed on B, open the back, open the shutter, and look through the back to make sure the rear barrel of the lens isn't dragging on anything inside.
      P came before 7 and has a less sophisticated viewfinder (framelines for only three lenses instead of five.) They were both superbly made and are super nice to use.

    Hey dude, love the vid. Fellow London canon P user in the south.
    It's easy to calibrate a P. There's a screw on the front which does the verticle axis, and the rangefinder on the front (which has the ring around it) does the horizontal axis. You just take the metal ring away and there's two little indentations in the element. You just rotate them around.
    Pop the camera on a tripod, fix the focus to infinity and line up the patches on something in the distance. To make doubly sure you can then use a tape measure to 3ft and set an item on a table and focus close to check near focus. But as long as infinity is good it should be fine.
    I got a P because it's mechanically a little simpler without all the bells and whistles that I could deal with the little issues like this. Hope it helps. All the best, JC

  • @MakeBrooklyn

    Probably others have already mentioned it but both the shutter speed issue and the rangefinder misalignment can be addressed with adjustment screws on the underside of the camera (You need to remove the bottom plate). Japan Vintage Camera describes the method while walking through either the P or the 7, I forget which but I would guess its a similar adjustment in both cases.

    I’ve had a Canon P for a while and am quite fond of it! I had been using my Leica IIIf, but I found the rangefinder / viewfinder to be a bit awkward at times. I had considered a Leica M, but really couldn’t justify it. The P uses all of my L-39 lenses, though, so it seemed the best choice. Not only that, but the experience using it isn’t different enough from an M3 to worry about! One thing - that resistance that you’re experiencing might by the lens rubbing against the light baffles inside. You might want to investigate that… Oh, and I use a KEKS light meter with it - works great! It also fits on the IIIf, making it a bit easier to use in difficult lighting situations. 😁

    • @ribsy
      @ribsy  3 года назад

      thanks for the tip! i hope the resistance isn't a huge issue

    • @bhop0073
      @bhop0073 3 года назад

      I was thinking the same thing about the resistance. That's something that shouldn't change no matter what camera you put it on unless something's blocking the mechanical movement.

      @@ribsy I heard the warnings about the Jupiter lens so, since I didn't already have a 35mm L-39 lens, I picked up the Canon 35mm ƒ2.8 - a wonderful lens! It was also quite inexpensive, though a bit more than the Jupiter. I can also use the Canon lens on the Leica and my Voightlander Bessa cameras, so it has been a great investment. I also gather that the damage to the baffles can be cumulative, so you might want to reconsider your choice!

    I have a Canon P which has problems similar to your 7, and also sometimes gives completely black frames. I enquired about getting it CLAed, and the quote I got was more than the value of the camera. Perhaps I should go looking for a repair shop with a lower fee...
    One thing I noticed with the P is that it has a tendency to tilt forward when hanging from a strap. Something that the extra height of the 7 would actually help with perhaps?

      A solution for the strap-problem is to attach both ends of the strap to for example the right strap attachment. I have done that on my Canon P and think it works great.

    Maybe 12 years ago, I thought it was time for me to look into getting a rangefinder again. I looked at Leicas, and a fairly beat up M2 or M3 with a lens was running $2000. That was not in my budget. I stared looking for the cheaper alternatives and there were many. They were mostly bigger, bulkier, clunkier, unattractive, and poor fit and finish. Most had a single, fixed lens. When I looked at the Canon rangefinders, they were by far the closest thing to a Leica but 1/10 the price. They made a lot of varieties in the 50's with minor changes. Used ones all seemed to be in far better condition than the Leicas, shutter speeds all sounded accurate, where most Leicas needed servicing. I am not a professional photographer so maybe I am overlooking some crucial advantage of the Leica over the Canon that makes it worth 10 times as much. I certainly can't see it. I would guess that status has a lot to do with the price differential. Over the past 12 years Canon rangefinder prices remain steady while Leicas continue to explode in price. Canon rangefinders-beautiful cameras at an even more beautiful price.

      @ribsy  3 года назад +1

      Yea they are great cameras

  • @David-hk3ly
    @David-hk3ly 7 месяцев назад

    I would say the biggest problem with the P, aside from its multiple frameline viewfinder is the camera light baffles that get in the way when different lenses are mounted. That is what causes the stiffness when trying to turn the lens to focus.

    i wanted to follow up on the Canon P rangefinder-which is a remarkable 35mm rangefinder. Both Canon and Nikon in the post WWII period imitated the Leica IIIc model because it was so well-known, reliable and gave great pictures. During WWII, the imperial government took over Japan’s optical companies and there were no consumer goods during this period, switching instead to gear for its military. After the war, there was a strong need to boost domestic industries and optics was one of the industries. Imitating the Leica IIIc model was done by Canon and Nikon, as well as in the Soviet Union with Fed, Zorky and Kiev cameras (though the latter are not nearly as smooth operating as Leica). The Canon P rangefinder uses the same M39 thread mount lenses like the Leica-and Canon made its version of them but Leica could also fit if you have one. Given they are similar specs to a Leica and can use the same lens mount, it stands to reason that the picture quality would be very good and easy to use. I have a Leica M3 with the Voigtlander 50mm Nokton lens and a Kodak Retina IIIC with its 50mm f 2 Schneider-Kreuznach lens, which are contemporary. Can easily appreciate what these all-metal cameras are capable of doing. There is a special joy and satisfaction from using these mainly metal cameras which are so precise, smooth and compact.

    Great, straightforward review, thanks. I love Canon RFs. I own the 7, 7sZ, VI-L, VI-T, and IVSB, along with the P. The P is my favorite, despite it being a simpler, supposedly downscale version of the VI (i.e., no frame line selector prism). It is simple and gorgeous. Even the recessed rewind lever is beautiful. I also love the Canon ltm lenses, but they are getting expensive, and hard to find without haze. I also have owned 6 Leicas, and presently own an M2 and M5, but I usually gravitate toward the Canon P first. Enjoy your camera!

    Interesting video here. There is a history about the early Nikon & Canon 35mm rangefinder cameras. They were essentially using Leica as their model; hence, the use of M39 lens mount identical to the Leica iiic, iiif, iiig. After WWII, the U.S. occupation forces in Japan wanted to encourage domestic industries and optics was one of them. During WWII, the imperial government took control of Nikon, Pentax and Canon to make war related instruments such as military binoculars, periscope lenses and maybe bombsights. These companies wanted to resume consumer products--and they were well made w good optics. Concurrent to this, soldiers in our occupation forces wanted cameras but could not afford the German Zeiss, Contax or Leica which then were the best known. The local demand and need to revive consumer products coincided well. The Japanese public and G.I.s liked these cameras which sold for less than their German counterparts which also sought their own revival after WWII. I believe there has been no single documentation of this history but it should be done. The reputation, quality and cost of Japanese cameras & optics took off and competed directly with German brands, eventually outselling them. The Canon 7 and Canon P are direct descendants of the post war effort to restore Japanese consumer cameras and optics. Wish someone would put together a book on this--it is very interesting history 🤔.

    Back in the 1970's, I looked at M-series Leicas and even then, prices were breathtaking. I was already a Leica IIIa user, and had a collection of screw mount lenses. I decided that a built in (Selenium) light meter was unnecessary, since Ye Olde Sekonic L-28C was in my kit. So, instead of spending way too much for Wetzlar Gold, I could spend money on what matters, film and lenses. Hello Ribsy, This is Alex from San Francisco, and I also have the Canon 7, and a Canon Vt, as I see the Big Difference when you had them together as the RF window is not ALING as the P is a short base RF in which the 7, and the 7S is a log base RF window just like the Leica M series line. As the 35mm Jupiter on the P is that of the RF cam is why it was stiff that maybe the cam on the P needs to look at. As in which that I have One Russian 50mm Industar 2.8 for my 7 as it was out of aligned as I compare to the 50mm Canon 1.19 as it was a tab Off, I also did the same test on the Canon Vt, in which also it was off when I place the Industar lens, So I look at another video as I found 2 videos in re-calibrating the RF with simple tools. You need a tape measure, Highly small screwdriver, and a Spanner Wrench. I managed to calibrate my Canon 7 when I was working at the camera store as I went to the repair section, and got the tools, and then I asked the owner of the store if he can watch me do this. Well I did it, as he was proud of me. The store closed in 2017, and then in 2021 he passed away as I will be speaking at the memorial this August. I hope that it is useful, and helpful...

    I have bought lenses and cameras from Japan many times and only ever had one issue where the lens was an AI not the advertised AIS, the seller refunded straight away with no issues. I have always found photography goods from Japan are in better nick than they have stated. You’re spot on though when you say to check that the seller has good comments. Never used a canon, but the advance stroke on my Leica M3 and Nikon F3 just make me smile every time I use them, and that’s just about everyday. Cheers.

    Not to be pedantic but the 7 was the upgrade, not the P. It introduced the light meter and included selectable framelines. There’s also the extra bayonet mount for the gimmicky 50/0.95 lens. The P was the budget option introduced 3 years earlier. Canon made great LTM rangefinders.

    As usual, thanks! Strange, my experiences with Japan are that I always got what was promised, and often better. I now also know what zone focusing is. For street photography, I always used a somewhat higher diaphragm and set the lens to e.g. 3.5 meters. For closer, simply blindly turn a bit to one side, for further turn to the other side. Have I, and my photography friends, been doing zone work for at least half a century without knowing this?

    In the 1980s, I started collecting Canon RF, acquiring a number of bodies. However, the P never got bought, as back then it was priced around double what it costs now, Sorry to heard that your 7 has shutter problems. Here in the US, it's practically impossible to find a competent repairman for these cameras, as the shutter in the 7/7s is very complex and difficult to service.without parts long unavailable. Ribsy, what you're talking about doesn't make any sense to me in terms of why you bought your Canon P rangefinder. Yes, I get that the cold shoe on the P is an advantage for you, that's very concrete. But you went into detail saying how the rangefinder on your Canon 7 wasn't calibrated correctly, yet it was straightforward to have it fixed. Then you were describing the shutter issues with your Canon 7, essentially shutter capping at the fastest shutter speeds. THis is something a simple CLA should be able to fix. In fact, a simple CLA should be enough to both calibrate the rangefinder and fix your shutter capping issues. They way you were describing the issues with the Canon 7, you made it sound like it's now a piece of junk and totally disposable. Wrong! I sincerely hope that you'll spend to get your Canon 7 the service it needs instead of just dropping it because of your new, fancy Canon P.
