Obviously, every film photographer dreams of a Leica, but honestly the money you need to spend on one doesn't necessarily justify itself. I like the Canon P, prefer this over the Canon 7 aesthetically. I like your video, very informative, but I would've liked some photos in-between shots and not only at the end. I subscribed.
Great video. Thanks! I have just upgraded from a Zorki 4 to a Canon L3, and was concerned that the deep Jupiter 12 lens would catch on the Canon shutter. Your video helped me make that decision. Thanks again!
Appreciate the info on this! Gonna keep my eyes open for one. This vid came up in my feed after binging some Canon QL17 G-III vids after scoring one at a thrift store in Estes Park. Can’t wait to shoot with it… maybe I’ll find a P one day. Looking forward to checking out your other videos.
Picked up a mint one for $250 a month ago. I love it! Going to pick up a second one painted black or a vi-L for my birthday. An absolute pleasure to shoot and travel with. Love it more than my Leica R7.
Like your channel and your way of presenting. One thing-on my M4 and newer Leicas I don’t swing the back open-I drop my pre-tensed cartridge in while sticking the extended tongue inside the take-up spool, push the cartridge down hard then close it up. I don’t even wind till it’s closed. Never fails. Guys who flip the back up and seat the film that way are wasting their time. Cool about that 1:1 VF!!!
The successor Canon 7 models has less magnification in the viewfinder so when I wear glasses I can still see the 35mm frame lines perfectly fine. This is the main reason why I didn't get and Canon P and eventually I found a nice Canon 7sZ which is supposedly rare.
Hi, the model 7 has perhaps the better viewfinder but the body is bigger and uncomfortable to hold, on the model 7 first version my finger always touches the rim of the meter window. I prefer the rare model VI-L (lever) or VI-T (trigger wind) or the series V models. All have the finder with three different magnifications. The earlier IV models have a small and dim finder. There its better to use the brighter auxiliary viwfinders for the cold shoe and only do the metering with the rangefinder window.
What drew you to the Canon P rather than the successor model, the Canon 7 and 7s? The 7 has multiple frame lines to select from, from 35mm to 135mm, and it comes with selenium meter, which my be perfectly functional. It's only slightly larger than the Canon P, doesn't weigh any more than the Canon P, and usually costs less than the Canon P.
The Canon 7 and 7s cameras are great as well! I have been wanting to try those as well as the canon VI-L and VI-T cameras. I picked the canon P because I liked the design the best. I don’t mind carrying a separate light meter and the light meter on the 7 didn’t look as clean as the P
Currently I'm using a Zorki 4K, great Leica copy but really limited, I use only the Jupiter 8 50mm, I love the look of it and quality but been wanting to upgrade to a Canon P in the future, amazing camera.
Nice vid. I picked one of these up for $25 a few years ago at a thrift store. I think it was a different model than yours though. It even had the Canon LTM 50mm f1.2. I don’t use it that much anymore just due to the weight.lol. My go to film cameras now are my A-1 and AT-1. But every once in awhile I do adapt the lens to my M50 and the results are great. But watching this makes me want to take it out again.
Hi, the 1.2/50 looks impressive but the picture quality is only satisfying in dark available light situations. Most the time you have ro stop down to 5.6 or 8. I think its better to use the 1.8, 1.9 or even 1.4 versions of the 50mm Canon.
i have a canon 7 and for the strap lug position i think its really to accomodate the larger lenses that was more common with it, like the canon ltm 50mm f1.4, which balances perfectly, the 50 f1.8 leans back and the 50 f1.2 leans foward
Yes, its totally true especially with most of the 85mm, 100mm and 135mm versions of Canon make. And, of course, its a wonderful video by pembroke reimann.
I just stumbled upon your video, and I couldn't thank you enough for being so thorough with the review. That being said, I did want to ask since it's what I've found so far: The black bodies I have seen online are repainted. Would there be any diminishing value for them being repainted? How would one know if the repainted camera was originally black?
Thanks for watching! I don’t really think repainting them diminishes the value, they aren’t worth all that much anyways and there are a lot of them that have been made. In terms of telling if you have an original black painted one, there aren’t many ways that you can tell. The original ones will have a little white dot painted on the self timer lever (however, that’s easy to copy with the repaint) also I believe there is some way you can tell by how the strap logs are painted but I don’t remember. I’m sure there’s something out there about that though
My favorite travel camera is my pair of Canon VT Deluxe cameras with a 50 1.8 Canon LTM as well as a Voigtlander Color Skopar 21mm f4 LTM. I've owned Leicas and enjoy my Canons for most of the same reasons people enjoy their Leicas. Find a camera you love, buy a bunch of film and enjoy life.📷👍
Hey! I have heard that for Soviet lenses like the Industar 61 and Jupiter 8 you need to have them shimmed in order to achieve proper infinity focus on it. Is that true? And you are also have to adjust your rangefinder.
Hey! I believe there are a couple early Russian lenses that have a different thread pitch. But I believe the Jupiter 8 and Industar 61 are standard LTM. Just make sure to do a little research on the particular lens you want before buying and you should be fine👍🏼
I have Industar 61m, Jupiter 8, Jupiter 12 and Jupiter 9 and none have problems focusing to infinity. Some lenses an be shimmed fairly easily if you have to, but you shouldn't have to adjust the rangefinder (anyway the cost of getting that done would be more then just buying a Canon lens in the first place).
Thank you for this interesting, thoughtful review. I agree that the Canon P is really a fantastic camera -- beautiful, beautifully designed and beautifully constructed -- with a great form factor and a big bright viewfinder. As you mentioned, the Canon LTM lenses for this camera are excellent, as well as beautifully constructed. Nikon also made LTM lenses which are also spectacular, in addition to fantastic lenses from other Japanese, Russian and German manufacturers. Indeed, apparently many photographers at the time actually preferred Nikon and Canon lenses to those offered by Leica. Canon rangefinders preceding the P are very similar to the P, except with selectable framelines, such as the VL and VT, and earlier models. Leica cameras and lenses are wonderful as well, of course, so I tend to just see the rangefinder offerings from Canon and Nikon as different, with their own strengths and weaknesses. Anyone using one of these cameras can be confident that even though they are excellent values, they are really uncompromised as far as the images they can produce.
I totally agree! I feel like these cameras are very overlooked and offer very comparable experiences to Leica rangefinders with some unique features that make them slightly different but just as well made
I would add - if you want the sharpness of modern glass that M mount lenses provide, you should really consider Voigtlander lenses like the Color Skopar and the Nokton. Very sharp, very modern lens designs (35mm 2.5 Color Skopar is rumored to be the same optical design as the Summarit 35) on LTM. Matt Day did a comparison of the Color Skopar against the Leica Summarit and the results are very surprising for a $300 vs. $1500 lens.

Nice video, we need to love the canon film cameras, amazing pieces 👏🏼👏🏼
Oh, nice review of the P! I've looked into buying one some time ago because it's definitely one of the best Leica M alternatives. The cool thing is that voigtländer has a huge collection of screw mount lenses. One problem I had was the 1.0 mag of the viewfinder I can barely see the 35mm frame lines even in a 0.85 mag viewfinder. After using the M6 for a while the quick loading system is much faster even with the flappy flap and the bottom removal. 😆 Also getting 38,5 frames is a nice bonus. I would really like to try out a Canon P because I heard so many good things about it. 👍
Thanks for watching brother! Yeah the 35mm framlines a a little difficult to see in the Canon P, but not so difficult for me that its really a hindrance. I think you would enjoy using the Canon P and getting to see the other rangefinder options from back in the day!
I could see how it would be kind of cool to load! I think over time I would either get annoyed that I have to hold onto the loose bottom plate or I would get use to the process and not notice at all lol
@@ReimannPembroke haha yeah i never notice the bottom plate thing at all i just put it on my pocket while i load the spool which only take me a couple of seconds all the best part about it is when you are winding your film back it will never go back into the cartridge since its stuck on the other spool so instead of me having to listen for when the film gets lose or detatches i can just keep winding until it gets stuck and for someone like me who develops at home thats a big plus cuz i dont have to pull the film out of the canister anymore
I've heard someone said canon p may have shutter jam issue that may cause a bad damage to the shutter curtain. (like wrinkled curtain), do you think this is a problem in this camera ?
Thank you! I need to get my Canon P serviced soon as well. I believe Retro_Photo_York on Instagram can fix it. There are also a couple do it yourself videos on RUclips about this that don't seem very difficult
@@ReimannPembroke am sure their are images on line , but as far looking at the scene through the finder, 35 mm fills the finder screen and then the image gets Progressively smaller as you focal lengths increases . No frame lines as such, the image size just changes depending on focal length..
Hey so you mentioned that you love using the jupiter 12 with the p but I recently saw a video where the guy said it has some compatibility issues coz of the protruding rear element like it messes with the shutter or somethin!?
Yes so The information out there is a bit spotty but I believe the big issue is with some of the earlier silver copies of the Jupiter 12. I think they had a small metal ring around the rear element which made it not fit without modification
I honestly have no idea haha I’m no master when it comes to adapting lenses other than to Sony E mount lol I’m sure there are adapters that will work though
Love this camera and I personally think it looks better than the M3. I need to get a 35mm for it soon. Leaning towards a a voigtlander eventually. I got the body and the canon Serenar 50mm f1.8 in a trade for a yashica mat 124 that I bought for $170 lol so I think I made out 🤙🏼

Thank you so much! My thoughts exactly! I think Leica cameras are fantastic pieces of design and mechanics, but I think most people that go down the Leica rabbit hole really just want a good rangefinder and with options like this and Nikon’s S rangefinders I think it’s well worth saving some cash
You are the first reviewer to comment on my biggest gripe with Canon P (I have a Canon V-L and its the same) and that is the stupid lug placement. My old Leica III is no where near as nice to shoot, but it's absolutely comfortable to carry around on a strap unlike the Canon (I've owned modern digital Leica M's and they are comfy too). I love the mechanics and and handling of the Canons. I wish there was a fix for carrying them on a cross body strap. Also, the Canon P in particular is dead simple to maintain.
Glad I was able to add something to the conversation about these cameras! I wish the lugs were on the sides and not at an angle. It hasn’t bothered me in a while though because I’m usually holding the camera
it's so annoying. My theory for the canon 7 is that the lugs are designed to work with the 50mm f0.95 lens. It's huge and heavy. With my small voigtlander 35mm f2.5, it always hangs sideways and it drives me crazy. I am actually considering selling it to buy something I'll use more
Hi. Great video, really impressive camera! I am consedering to buy Canon QL 19. I think it's not famous much that like QL 17. I wonder if anyone used it or suggest it?

Oh the VI-L is an awesome camera! I would recommend the Voigtlander LTM Color Skopar 35mm f/2.5 if you can spend a bit more money! That’s my dream lens for my canon P
@@ReimannPembroke I've just checked on Ebay and I see what you meant by "a bit more money" ahah, I think I'm gonna go with the more wallet-friendly ones lol The Jupiter you have is the 12? Thanks a lot for your answer! Cheers

I highly recommend it! The canon P is 90% of the Leica experience for 10% of the cost. Some other rangefinders I think are really well made and share the same experience are the canon VI-L, VI-T, and Nikon S3!
I’ve been researching and hearing compatibility issues about the canon p and Jupiter 12 35mm. What has been your experience and does that lens harm the body?
There is a slight issue in my experience, the rear element of the lens touches the top light baffle in the camera body. This isn’t much of an issue. All I did to fix it was slightly bend that light baffle up so the lens wouldn’t run into it and it works great
Do you develop your own film? If not where do you send it? Do they scan it for you? What options are there out there for getting film developed and scanned? Thanks. In enjoyed the video, subscribed and 🔔 activated.
I do develop and scan my own film which I HIGHLY recommend you do also! It’s fun, makes you appreciate your photos even more, and saves you tons of money! As far as sending your film off to get developed and scanned there are tons of options depending on where you live but it get expensive quick
@@ReimannPembroke Thanks for your response. I used to develop my own film/ prints in B&W long ago - I had access to a lab in college. That’s no longer the case, and was curious if I should look into setting up my own station for it, or just send out to get developed.
I don’t really like it when the shutter speeds are on two different dials and I like the simple 1:1 viewfinder with all the framelines that the canon p has
@@ReimannPembroke I calmed down and thought that older Leica M are simple cameras, no manually switchable lines, film loading on M3 and counter on m2 are inferior to Canon's. They are more advanced cameras even being 10x times cheaper 🙂
I think the best lens in that price range is probably the Canon 35mm f/2.8. There are a couple different versions but they are both good if you can find a clean example
If you want a Leica, get a Leica. You will not find a rangefinder-system with better lenses available ranging from vintage, budget, affordable to absolute top-notch state of the art. The Canon is a very nice camera in its own right and one of the best choices as far as LTM-cameras go.
For those who didn't know; ALL "Photography" is FILM photography! "Digital Image Capture", IS NOT PHOTOGRAPHY!!!!! The technology is completely different. For one, we have Photographs that date back to the 1830's and 1840's. No Digital image can be expected to last that long! No matter what media it's stored on, Digital data begins to degrade immediately. And, in 25 to 50 years, will be gone forever! Not so For a properly stored Photograph or negative. Do some research. You will be very surprised at what you find.

@@ReimannPembroke Yeah, I’m stuck with 40mm on the QL17. Hope to find an interchangeable lens rangefinder soon!
Picked up a mint one for $250 a month ago. I love it! Going to pick up a second one painted black or a vi-L for my birthday. An absolute pleasure to shoot and travel with. Love it more than my Leica R7.
Awesome! Glad to hear you like it so much! I’m tempted to get myself a VI-T
cheers. great video. I had the Leica M3 and loooved it. Now I'm in the market for one of these. Thanks for the info.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video! Hope you get your hands on one!
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it!! Oh yeah that sounds like a waaayyyy faster method of loading!
The successor Canon 7 models has less magnification in the viewfinder so when I wear glasses I can still see the 35mm frame lines perfectly fine. This is the main reason why I didn't get and Canon P and eventually I found a nice Canon 7sZ which is supposedly rare.
This is good to know! hopefully people who don't like the 1:1 viewfinder of the Canon P know about the Canon 7 cameras
I think you would love it if you decided to upgrade! Thanks for watching!

What a complete review buddy. I have Canon 7 and looking forward for a P model.

Wow you got a steal! Especially if it has the 50mm f/1.2 on it🤯 thanks for watching
Hi, the 1.2/50 looks impressive but the picture quality is only satisfying in dark available light situations. Most the time you have ro stop down to 5.6 or 8. I think its better to use the 1.8, 1.9 or even 1.4 versions of the 50mm Canon.
Hey dude! Awesome review. As I am also a big fun of Canon P, I feel great to see you✌️also, I learned new stuff from you 👏
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed the video!!
Such a beatuful piece of gear...the shots were awesome bro, keep them coming ✊🏼

A stainless steal shutter curtain on a rangefinder is such a big plus actually, never thought about that before.
It really is!! I think these cameras will withstand the rest of time. Thanks for stopping by and checking out the video Karin!
I use the Canon Model 7. Absolutely love it. And yes, canon glass for these are amazing. I have the 35,50,85, and 135
I need to get some of the canon lenses
I think its design it's more beautiful than Leica's. I prefer the angles vs the rounded corners on Leicas. Really good review man!

Great review I have a Canon 7 and love it 👍
Love to hear it! The canon 7 is great too! Thanks for watching!
i have a canon 7 and for the strap lug position i think its really to accomodate the larger lenses that was more common with it, like the canon ltm 50mm f1.4, which balances perfectly, the 50 f1.8 leans back and the 50 f1.2 leans foward
Yeah this is probably true!
Nice pictures. I have the Canon P as well. If you can pick up the Canon 50mm 1.4 LTM. It's a gem of a lens.
Thanks for watching! I really want to try that lens!!
@@ReimannPembroke Hope you can get your hands on the lens soon. It's a great lens that deserves to be paired with a great camera.
Find a camera you love, buy a bunch of film and enjoy life.📷👍
That’s awesome! And yes I couldn’t agree more! Find a camera you enjoy!
Great video! I really I wanted it!
I'm going to buy this camera, Is plastic used for the body material?
No this camera has a brass top plate and nickel bottom plate I believe
They really are bro!! Thanks for watching!📸🎞✊🏼
I think you would enjoy using the Canon P and getting to see the other rangefinder options from back in the day!
the loading of a leica is actually one of my favorite parts haha feels like im loading medium format
Awesome review, I HAVE to get one
I think you would be a pretty happy camper using one of these cameras!
I've heard someone said canon p may have shutter jam issue that may cause a bad damage to the shutter curtain. (like wrinkled curtain), do you think this is a problem in this camera ?
Most of these cameras have wrinkled curtains and it isn’t a problem

Hey so you mentioned that you love using the jupiter 12 with the p but I recently saw a video where the guy said it has some compatibility issues coz of the protruding rear element like it messes with the shutter or somethin!?
Yes so The information out there is a bit spotty but I believe the big issue is with some of the earlier silver copies of the Jupiter 12. I think they had a small metal ring around the rear element which made it not fit without modification

Your photos with this are bloody amazing. I’ve got the Leica bug (after inheriting a Leica iiif), but do I WANT to drop the cash for an m6 or m-p? Well sure, but why would I when I can achieve results just as awesome as what I’ve seen here?

I’ve been researching and hearing compatibility issues about the canon p and Jupiter 12 35mm. What has been your experience and does that lens harm the body?
There is a slight issue in my experience, the rear element of the lens touches the top light baffle in the camera body. This isn’t much of an issue. All I did to fix it was slightly bend that light baffle up so the lens wouldn’t run into it and it works great

ALL "Photography" is FILM photography!
