I feel like what he means by having Kiryu and Nishki being a new portrayal is despite having Yakuza Zero to work with when they made Kiwami, basically the entirety of Yakuza 1's tone and plot was untouched, which made it clash hard with giving Nishki way more in-between backstory every now and then to flesh out his heel turn, but that's not as weird as the whole Majima Everywhere thing clashing with him being a one-note psycho who gleefully kidnaps children in the main story.
This version I feel like won't be so constrained about being 1000% faithful to literally every cutscene from the original to its detriment. It'll recreate what it needs to while I think going "yeah Majima always acts like this" or "Nishki expresses his turn to Kiryu more" or things like that.
...What I'm saying is this series is gonna be what Kiwami might've wanted to go for in being a remake that kinda forgot it was a remake and not a port with new mocap.
Basically Yakuza 2 Kiwami because its a remake with the added part of Kiryu being a member and Captain/Foreman of the Majima Family's Construction Business, Cabaret Club and Majima Saga

I dont know how i feel about the charecters being so different
If it's gonna be different then they have a big task of making it likeable and a solid acting. Very solid to the point people are okay with not comparing it anymore to the original character of the game.

Shit guys, I'm scared. I like the story but I always liked the characters more and I'm getting a feeling from what is said here that, characters will be fundamentally different but the story will remain the same and that doesn't seem like such a good thing...
I've felt similarly on other projects so trust me when I say that I understand how you feel, but to give you an opinion on the other side, I think the Prime Series might actually benefit from Kiryu's character being different.
I absolutely love Kiryu's character in the games, but the thing about him is that he's borders being a perfect character with no flaws. Other than some of the games trying to give him anger issues or depression (the former of which I think is out of character for the games, and the latter of which isn't shown well in my opinion, at least for Kiwami 2), Kiryu has nothing bad about him. He is literally the stand-up civilian model in terms of morals, strength and manners.
I believe this works in the games so well because you play as Kiryu. In a beat-em up, most players want to feel unstoppable, and morally speaking almost all players want to feel like they are in the right when they play a game. But for a show, since we aren't playing as Kiryu, I don't think he would work as well as he normally does because it could come off as boring. With him being unstoppable and always morally correct in the story's eyes, you basically have a character that the viewer feels like is going to win every battle and doesn't have much to learn.
So while I want the spirit of Kiryu to be there, I think changing his character and giving him actual character flaws will be better for the story of the show. But I'm not claiming to be right, it's just my opinion and maybe when I watch the Prime Series, I'll realize that I'd would have preferred the Kiryu that we got in the video games.
As for the other characters like Nishiki, I'm just putting my trust in RGG that it's more appealing for them in the show to be changed. Only time will tell if people like the changes, though.

Sem querer soar briguento, mas o próprio criador dos jogos disse que gostou das mudanças. É bem provável que o povo vá comparar e dizer que é ruim sem olhar a fundo, então tenta pensar "se os jogos não existissem, isso seria ruim?" e se a resposta for "não", aí você compara com os jogos.

Everyone's seriously blowing things out of proportion, things might be different but if still faithful enough, there's nothing that should be going super mad about. Call me blind and all but I'm absolutely looking forward to the series regardless of how it's going to be, I'm definitely on Yokoyama's side here.
my question is why use Kiryu and Nishkiyama as the main characters for the story if they are going to be portrayed differently than the games? why not make new characters and a new story if you're not going to be faithful to the games?
Yeah that's exactly it. Huge red flag. And doesn't sound like it's gonna make it resemble the combat at all either. Majima is probably just gonna be a regular guy who takes his construction business very seriously.

Well, you can't just directly make a show a one-to-one of a game. That's why it's important that they're called adaptations because what works in a game doesn't always work for a show. So to an extent, to make an appalling show based on a game, you always have to change at least some stuff.
Other than that, while I understand the fear that the characters won't be as appealing as they are in the games, I personally think it's probably for the best that they changed Kiryu's character. He's a borderline perfect character with almost no flaws in the video games, and while that works in the games because you play as him, I think watching a character like that in a TV show would be super boring for most people. So I think the Prime Series changing him and giving him actual character flaws will be much better for the story overall. But that's just my opinion.
@Chaogod1233 To be fair, how would the show make the combat resemble the games and not have it come off as ridiculous? Breaking someone's spine on a guardrail and watching them get back up or watching Kiryu dodge bullets works in a video game because it's just gameplay, but in a show, it would probably come across as very odd and too goofy for many viewers, especially for people who haven't played the games. And while the games are goofy, they are mostly only goofy in the substories. The games take their main stories very seriously, and since this is a show, the story will probably mostly, or entirely, be about the main story.
Also, just because the characters are changed doesn't mean the characters won't have the spirit of the originals. A great example of this (in my opinion) is the Resident Evil 4 Remake, where Capcom changed Leon Kennedy's character, but he still has the spirit of the original Leon Kennedy from the original game. And while fans can disagree with directors saying that an adaptation has the spirit of a game series (the Halo show comes to mind for me), it still should be a good sign in my opinion that RGG's Director says the Prime Series contains the spirit of the games.
Because Kiryu and Nishiki weren't even consistent themselves in the games.
Kiryu was completely different in Y0. A weird mixture of him in Kiwami where they used original script (that rely on original short film live adaptation as an intro) but added Y0 influence made his character somewhat inconsistent.
Same with Nishiki who turned into a wimp in Y0 that completely contradicted how his character was in the original Y1. Same applied with Kiwami where it's a weird mixture of old and new.
I was VERY happy until that last "No the ones you know from the game" comment about Kiryu and Nishiki...
Assuming this takes place BEFORE Kiryu goes to the slammer, it makes sense that they're different, but if it's POST-slammer, then they're messing with the core of Yakuza 1...

Sounds like any of the games writers or people were not even involved in the writing. Thats also a red flag. Every video game show that has been successful (or movie) is due to someone who works on the games working closely with them.
I've poured 150 hours into Infinite Wealth. Been a blast but the amount of farming is insane Ryu Ga Gotoku ;( ... Not unfamiliar territory for me after doing a 267 hour 100% run for Persona 5 Vanilla. But it's back to the Big Swell for me for now.
It is regrettable that you have not released a patch with Brazilian Portuguese subtitles for the games from Yakuza 0 to 6 to date.

They have huge task in front of them, if by episode 2, we don't see a side story that completely derails the show but ties in nicely at the end, its kind of a failure. You have to intentionally derail all momentum and not piss off new viewers.

I started playing the games with Yakuza 3 and have played the whole series. I am really looking forward to the show and the teaser I saw looks promising.
Fr me out always was interesting to see the Japanese culture in the games. With all the real restaurants and brands in the game it always felt like a vacation in Japan. By now Kamurocho feels like a second home. I've experienced the evolution of Kamurocho over multiple decades through the different games. My favourite part in every game is to return to Kamurocho, walk through the streets and look what has changed since the last game.
Please never ditch Kamurocho in the game. For me Kamurocho is wedded to the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series. Games without Kamurocho just wouldn't hit the same. I like Ijincho and the other cities too. But they don't have the same history as Kamurocho. There are much more emotions tied to Kamurocho by now, than with Ijincho for example. For me it's fine if the games main focus is somewhere else, but I would wish for at least including a small portion in Kamurocho into the games.
Also I think Kamurocho still has potential to be increased in size. I haven't been to Kabukicho yet, but I think Kabukicho is bigger than Kamurocho. So maybe Kamurocho can be increased in size to make it feel more fresh while still keeping the roots.
But I am sure whatever you make in the future will be great. Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio and Rockstar Games are the only two studios for me, where I know I can buy all the games blindly and will have an awesome time with them.

Dude, they’re game characters. They weren’t meant to look like actual Japanese people. Christ, just look at PS2-era Kiryu. He looks like an anime protagonist. Nobody in Japan is gonna look like them naturally.

I hope Majima retains his character development from 0. The Mad Dog act feels to me to be a way to cope, I hope he is still good underneath. If he is as he was in the first original game he will be too lacking.

From what I can tell, Yokoyama has a habit of being cornered into things he doesn’t agree with (by NO fault of his own, mind you). It was shown it happened with the obligatory character cards in Ishin, and SEGA definitely showed corporate disinterest in providing English dub resources in 8 along with Persona 3 as they typically do with their infamously ignorant western release choices (cutting Brian Bloom and Roger Craig Smith for no reason was clearly SEGA dumping the same group onto 2 separate projects at the same time and not providing any assistance). It seems like Amazon and SEGA might have strong-armed Yokoyama and his crew into something again, and one thing is clearly evident : they didn’t want his or all of RGG’s involvement specifically.
The fact that people like Yokoyama, Ryosuke Horii, and Chihiro Aoki were not involved whatsoever despite being equivalent to RGG’s top brass as series veterans tells me that either Amazon or especially SEGA did some corporate finagling and made decisions outside the team’s control again. RGG Studios clearly gets pushed around a lot by the executives at SEGA being a small affiliate studio, and that doesn’t bode well for the series.
While I have full confidence that the acting, production, and direction will be at least fully serviceable, I doubt the actual Essence of Like A Dragon (pun intended) will be captured well. The series grew into itself by embracing the aspects of life wholeheartedly and including all the absurdities and tragedies that come with it, and making a purely gritty drama that ignores the light to the series’ darkness is gonna take away from that massively - but absolutely reeks of SEGA’s typical schtick of not understanding who they’re selling to. Considering they didn’t care to speak up about old Sonic from the first movie, they clearly have no comprehension of what they’re making, just as the SEGA executives always have.
All I know is, Yokoyama’s team has never done us wrong in its works, but SEGA definitely has, and it seems like they’ve got the team by the short and curlys, especially as of late with the team’s repeated success. I worry for the team at RGG and hope that I’m wrong about the series, but knowing SEGA’s track record when handling its properties, I expect to be disappointed. Nagoshi managed to get off Scot-free on account of his reputation, but considering he up and ditched the studio to start his own, it doesn’t seem like that respect was shared with his team. I really do hope Yokoyama can get more control over things if the show bombs and the executives finally back off, but I’m not holding my breath. Corporate stiffs rarely see their failures, even when things crash and burn.
