Jake, I had the exact same mushrooms come up in my mulch. They are a parasol mushroom and there are a few types, some edible, some not. Put that cap gills down on a white plate and leave is for a few hours, if the spores that are deposited are greenish, DONT EAT, if they are white/grey they are edible. I prefer to leave them though because they look so impressive in the garden and there are better eating mushrooms. The most dangerous mushroom here in Australia is the death cap and it is also a white mushroom with white gills so i prefer to steer clear of white gilled mushrooms in the wild.
*easy way to inoculate your chips:* 1. get some mushrooms you like from the farmers market. 2. eat all but one. 3. put one in blender with non chlorinated water. 4. spread water on chips. 5. wait 6. eat 7. repeat
Indoor growing and wild growing/outdoor "wild" grown mushrooms are not that similar in approach i think. I have established lots of mushroom cultures by just throwing out bad mushrooms and the parts ive cleaned out. Think about how nature does it, no pressure cooker, no gloveboxes and no other human intervention.
Jake, I recommend you get the book : 100 eatable mushroom. Great book for beginners. Also, go to the store and purchase some fresh mushrooms and blend them in the blender with water to make a slurry. Pick an area in your garden that is with shade and spread the slurry around. The spores will grow with proper moisture, which you don't seem to have a problem with because of the layers of wood chips. Doing it this way can help you get some mushroom and be sure they are eatable until you can acquire some experience. Good luck.

I remember my mom told me which mushrooms I could eat. the brown and white ones I think. l try to comfirm that and try to see if I can get info for you. but I think it's edable. I'll be back.
Hi Jake, if you are interested in growing your own edible mushrooms I would encourage you to buy a seeded log or get log seeding plugs/spores and supply the log yourself. I have known some experts on wild food foraging and even they avoid harvesting mushrooms in the wild, just in case. The risk vs reward is discouraging with mushroom foraging.
You can grow your own strains in the woodchips instead. Adding a chopped up mushroom to your pond water when watering would even work, though starting a mycelium culture first, then "planting" it throughout the woodchips would be faster and more will take.
As you already said, unless you are absolutely certain, the rule of thumb is you don't eat them. Consider inoculating a few logs in shady areas near your pond.
fungal compost is supposed to be great but never eat a mushroom if you are not 100% sure exactly what it is because there are mushrooms that look almost identical to an edible variety but are deadly poisonous.
Well the spiritual ones I was aware of were very small, shot up in hours from cow pies after a rain in hawaii mid 70's. Stayed in church all day long :0)
If you are serious about identification you need to include a spore print on both black and white paper. Also another good rule is if the stem bruises blue and it has a purple brown spore print on white paper, then you know it will be 100% safe and potentially magic, regardless an any other features. The shape is the worst identifying feature because it can vary drastically between different stages of maturity as well as well as environment, shade/sun ect..
You seem like a friendly vegan with an inviting and warm personality, unlike some other vegans with horribly toxic personalities *cough*freelee&durianrider*cough*. You can't win hearts with hate, only love. Congrats on what you're doing and good luck. Oh, DanTheMan is also a great vegan with good info on plants. Rock on. lol
Your mushroom has a resemblance to the Shaggy Parasol mushroom but as mycologists say "when in doubt go without." Unless you can get a deeper analysis on it and find out what it contains. There is however, the King Stropharia mushroom as well as several Oyster mushrooms, gray oyster mushrooms to name one of them, as well as several other mushrooms proven to increase crop yields.
I guess you could bring the samples to your local biologist or should I say mushroom experts and they will tell you what to do. remember "LOOKS CAN BE DECEIVING"
Green-spored Parasol(most likely cause it grows in grass and in yards, Poisonous) or Shaggy Parasol(but they are kinda flat), maybe a Smooth Lepiota(but still should not eat) Umm... yeah just dont eat them.
Look Delicious! But it looks like an "Amanita". Some of the Characteristics of an "Amanita" Poisonous Mushroom are: 1. Scales on the top; 2. parasol shaped cap; 3. Presence of a bulbous cup or sac around the base; 4. Will leave a spore print; 5. Presence of a ring around the top part of the stem; 6.Thin and white gills. You can produce your own by simply buying some raw edible mushrooms and collect the spore in the inner side, then inject the spore in an old log(s), or use your already own Wood Chips. One important thing that I've learn is that before you start the process you should disinfect or sterilized the medium in which you decide to grow your mushrooms, this is because you do not want any other bacteria or entity messing up with your spores. Not all "Amanita" Mushroom are Poisonous, but I have a lot to learn still. Congratulations for your channel! Your doing what I'm planning to do, having my own edible garden (I've already started!). This is my first RUclips Comment, ever! And I did it 'cause I love mushrooms, and I've done a lot of research in the subject. Your doing an excellent job, and thanks for sharing your day to day experiences. If you decide to open the mushroom, Can you share the experience? I want to know if it turn green or blue (bad); or if the ring around the stem moves easily(good).
if you are interested in culturing your own mushrooms to eat its really ez, u just need a mason jar, old mushroom stems the bottom part closest to the ground. like how these two are connected together... and throw it in old coffee you have used in the morning then wait basically....
Google a Mushroom expert in your town, barter with your knowledge and your awesome greens : )Never ever even consider eating one of those babies without knowing their class!! Good Luck ; )
wow so much fear in americans. mushroom hunting is my favorite hobbie. 7 years experience. looks like lepita or the parisol mushroom family. some of which are edible others poisonous. particularly the green spored parisols are poisonous. you want to do a spore print. side note most poisonous mushrooms arnt deadly but can mild to severe gastrointestinal distress which is survivabal. i recommend getting a few great books, mushrooms demystified, when it rains it spores . they are complementary written to used together . memorize all the deadlies first. you will learn there are far more edible and delectible species then poisonous. its fun for me. because so few utilize the abundant food.
Yeah, make damn sure you know exactly what it is. Even then, only try a small portion to begin with. There are a number of mushrooms that look quite similar to other varieties which are poisonous. Awesome mushroom though! I love it when they pop up in my yard and garden!
These are puff ball mushrooms and are edible! If they are white when cut they are Good! If they start turnning soft on The outside and when cut turn yellow on the inside they are No longer Good actually rotting at that Point. No worries! Eat them up!
For the first: I'am not a mushroom expert and I am not exactly sure which variety of mushroom you have!!!! I Think these are mushrooms you put in as mykorrhiza when planting your jabuticaba because they grow in a ring around your tree (in the former planthole) In Austria we have mushrooms very similar th your mushrooms called Parasol. You can check if they are right or not by moving the ring around the stem. If the ring can be moved freely (ring is not grown together with stem) you can eat them. Usually these kind of mushroom is crumbed like Wiener Schnitzel and eaten with potato mash. Very delicious
My guess is a parasol mushroom of some type, too. Some are edible, others are toxic and there are even more poisonous look-alikes. I would do a spore print to investigate further. You can innoculate fresh woodchips of certain types with a variety of mushrooms. You can order the spawn from several companies.
Hi there, you have a few mushrooms growing in half circles or a full circles haha that is Good! that means you have Fairies in your garden who are dancing over your mushrooms! Your garden is filled with a positive vibes 👍🦋🌱 let the Fairies Dance away. ✌️❤️🎶🌼🌻🌱
Jake all mushrooms you can eat at lest once. having said that, u could take a very small piece wait 24 hours if u feel good after that time your mushrooms are good to go, just make sure u have a specimen in a plastic bag so if you do have a reaction u can show the hospital what you eaten. good luck
Johnny Kay . Dear Johnny Kay : These are good instructions for eating mushrooms that have been identified as non - poisonous. ..and most toxic mushrooms just make you dog - sick, but there are some out there that would put you underground if you ate even that tiny smidgen you mentioned. Please do not ever do that! !! And certainly never, ever advise anyone else to do so. (unless you happen to be a psychopath )
Well, that's what all of the "experts" say. When I was young we ate the ones with the skirts all the time and never had a problem but I thought we may have had a special immunity to them because we were brought up on them. I really don't know but at the time, I was afraid Jake might get impatient and eat it so I chose the side of caution and told me not to eat it right away. From my understanding, certain mushrooms affect different people in different ways.
This is a regular parasol mushroom there is a green spored parasol wich is poisonus but not deadly. I have even try to grow a similar looking species. I failed so bad.
Not an expert, but I believe that's a green spored parasol. Inedible. If you ate it, you probably had a bad day but lived. In general, if I were you, if you haven't already done so, I would join some local mushroom foraging groups on Facebook who could help you out.
I've studied quite a bit on mushrooms and the rule of thumb is the only safe way to know is to have someone who really knows tell you! Forget the books and all that.
buyerofsorts : how are we supposed to know if our "someone who really knows " really DOES know? ?? Are they certified? Or are they someone like me who is familiar with quite a few mushrooms in some vicinities, but unfamiliar ones always show up and I don't know them. Do you know that there are some that are good in other countries but not here. ..and visa - versa? I'm talking about ones that are the same kind. So how does your good ol' buddy fit in here? Are you jealous of the books?? Or why are you so friggin against a learned education. If it bugs you that some people have educations, what's stopping you from getting one yourself? Then YOU can write a book.
Those look like Lepiota family mushrooms, some of which are edible but the family is also the most common mushrooms for causing poisoning in the US. If you haven't studied you're mushrooms well do not eat them. Mushrooms demystified is probably the best identifying book you can get and if you're interested in eating wild mushrooms research is a must.
It looks like agaricus campestris which are not poisonous but I don't think you should eat it because there are mushrooms that looks like that, that are poisonous
If you want to grow good edibles, shiitaces are the best tasting by far. grocery store button, crimini and portabella mushrooms are very easy to grow in soil; you can buy their mycelium plant it in compost, either outdoors or indoors. the species is "Agaricus bisporous." oyster mushrooms are very easy to grow but dont taste anywhere nearly as good as shiitaces. agaricus are bland but good for coocing and fruit prolifically. I am currently experiencing a huge fruiting of Agaricus subfescens, or "God's mushroom (almond agaricus)." This mushroom is lice a button mushroom or portabella depending on size with an almond flavor and it is extremely easy to grow under tomatoes, in dirt in general, really foolproof. I got my mycelium at field and forest, they have good shiitace strains as well.
I thought it was manure that produced methane, not wood chips. Either way, don't eat the mushroom unless you are sure. You have a book? There are beginner mushrooms for those just starting to forage. I suggest you buy one or you could cultivate your own mushrooms. Nice garden by the way.
Put them in water with a piece of garlic if the garlic turns black its no good.If you have squirrels around your house they usually eat mushrooms if they are not eating them they are poisonous.
Dear God !!!! Vegetta!!! The mountain ranges of California are practically littered with bodies of dead illegal Mexicans who identified mushrooms by your method !!! Also FYI. ..squirrels have a special enzyme that allows them to eat the deadliest mushroom out there. ..the beautiful Destroying Angel, or Death Angel. So they pig out on them. I've watched them. Please, darlin' learn from accurate textbooks, not some guy next door. I hate to think you might decide to go on a hunt, as innocent as you are. And I love you.
I see those all the time in my yard as well, but I leave them alone. I suggest to just ask a professional or take a spore count. (green/blue bad, white/grey good, I think but check with a professional!) Also, I love your gardening videos and I have a question of my own. I'm attempting to grow some mangoes from seed in a green house here in Georgia (Below Atlanta), and they're not doing too well. I have the small sprouts that are already there sticking out of the soil and I even have some worm castings mixed in. I also have a heating lamp in the greenhouse for when it gets too cold. I keep the soil slightly moist with some drainage. So, what am I doing wrong!?
LOL "If you eat me, you will die of massive organ failure" oh wow I just realized you are showing us your Jabuticaba update I posted my first comment before watching the video, what a coincidence.
Unless you bring in known spores and inoculate an area to grow yourself the safe answer is to avoid eating them. Even experts have difficulty identifying species without the context of time in their life cycle. Some toxic species look very much like the edible varieties at different stages of their life cycle. The most accurate form of identification is using a spore print which you most likely wont have access to. You could join a mushroom foraging club to get more information. I am not sure how common that kind of group is in your neck of the woods. Be safe.
Please be careful with the mushrooms. I've had toadstools that looked exactly like that grow in my backyard after a good rain. Try taking your mushroom sample to a local university or a garden shop in so that they can be identified as edible or poisonous.
i have no idea eat or not. i do know if take mushrooms from krogers or meijers or walmart. rub the bottom part on grass yard you get those mushrooms and if drops in compost because problem not eat after rub on ground the sprote edible mushroome in compost been. i also know some health people clam not eat mushrooms at all as spores will get air in nose. were other health experts say really good for you. I i know you use as vegitaren ell
if just kid you may ask parents fist as they might yard nut not want mushrooms pop up yard. i actually dug trench in parents yard because thought tree die because mushrooms pop up yard. what found out later was brother out there rub mushrooms on ground.
My Dad, Many Years Ago, ate the Wrong Mushroom, and it made him Extremely Sick. He NEVER Ate Mushrooms again. Lived to be 91. I see the ones you showed all the time, but I Don't eat them. Would like to know myself.
Jake I'm not a fan of your MA and you know why. But I have a question, you like growing your own fruits etc. Why don't you start keeping bees for honey? You have plenty of space plus nothing beats organic honey.
Jake!! DO NOT eat any of your home grown mushrooms!! Don't listen to any of your other viewers! How well do you know them? Not very...you don't know me but at least I am trying to save your life. Think of Pam..would you let her try it first?? I think not!!!!
Hey Jake - you should reply to some of these posts unless you ate and have died - Hope not as want to see the Mangos that lady has grown - my Nam Doc Mai has been in flower all winter and we have a very cool spring so far
I wouldnt eat - we have similar mushrooms here that grow in Pine mulch that look like field mushrooms etc - if you scratch or peel top and it goes yellow dont eat - I recommend going to a Shitake Log class and drill oak logs and put in pegs that have shitake spores - I got about 4 to 5 crops over 2 years - dried the biggest crop for winter casseroles. We even have Orange Saffron Italian mushrooms (Google it) that grow wild in old pine plantations and are as good as Porcini from italy. PS magic mushrooms go blue if you bruise them. Those arnt them Jake - LOL
One sure way to tell if a plant be it berry, leaf, mushroom, etc is toxic is to crush it with your hand and then rub it on a part of your hand or arm. If you react with a rash, then you shouldn't eat it. If it doesn't react, you can try to eat a small amount and then monitor yourself if you have any reactions. This technique is a bit risky and usually only used in a survival situation. Better if an expert can verify.
make sure to wash your hands after handling these. I smoked a cigarette after pulling wild mushrooms from my garden and found myself at midnight violently vomiting in my front yard.
Just eat it.
Trust me, I'm a RUclips commenter.
ChickenYale 😆
Νo ur not there poisonous just look ij youtube top 12 poisonous mushrooms in the world, stop lying, ur welcome..
Demon the bat soft

4. spread water on chips.
5. wait
6. eat

Ive seen it work.
yes. it's hit or miss but for being free why not.
one mushroom has many millions of spors.
I thought certain mushroom species required certain substrate material? For woodchips, you can cultivate shiitaki, oyster, lions mane, etc.
Dylan T I think you've inspired a video

for one, your soil has mycelium. second, if it turns green or blue under those white tops, they are poisonous. full white are gudd to go

As you already said, unless you are absolutely certain, the rule of thumb is you don't eat them. Consider inoculating a few logs in shady areas near your pond.
you look gay
I'll take that as a compliment!
ReLaX is that a bad thing?
+ReLaX I think it's a very bad thing to deny your children their free will
Pro-methean no, just lower their expectations a bit. Marry for family not for temporary feelings.
cut the stalk into half (vertically)and leave it untouched for half an hour, if the color turns anything other than white, dump it :)
nah bro, if it goes blue stuff your face with them ;3
HOLY CRAP, ITS MARIO'S GARDEN AND HE'S PICKING HIS MUSHROOMS!!!!! 0,0 XD
fungal compost is supposed to be great but never eat a mushroom if you are not 100% sure exactly what it is because there are mushrooms that look almost identical to an edible variety but are deadly poisonous.

chlorophyllum molybdites
Without looking it up, I would guess it is not edible- that ring around the stem is found on some very poisonous varieties like the destroying angel.
How do piles of wood chips rotting at the landfill create problems vs rotting in your backyard?
tortaboy when they are buried at a landfill they are decomposed by anaerobic bacteria, that release methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.
That little skirt under the umbrella means its a bad one!
no its not always the case...
No sure is not, but if your not highly experienced with mushrooms and identification its a good rule of thumb to follow.
Veil
Completely false. Store bought mushrooms have the exact same ring, Agaricus bisprous. Are you telling me that button mushrooms are bad ones too? lol
Well, that's what all of the "experts" say. They appear to be part of the very bad amanitas mushroom family. Careful!
Red = GOOD white = bad
Amanitas bad?
One of tastiest mushrooms are Amanitas (Amanita Cesarea...).
wine cap stopharia is a great one I hear. haven't tried it but supposedly it's very easy to distinguish.
I read once that white gills are bad.
try to plant some eatable mushrooms under the trees. it could be great :)
I think lawn mushrooms are cute
Jake I have those mushrooms in my front yard as well and I was wondering if I can eat them?? 🤔 I love mushrooms!🍄😍
Mushrooms are a tricky bit, get a book, do a spore print, triple check
yes,you can eat this mushrooms... this is lat.(Macrolepiota procera) and its very tasty :)
P.S. your "someone who knows " most likely got most of that knowledge from legitimate field manuals anyway.
White mushroom is eatable but your mushroom is not totally white
I think those are bad
Put them in water with a piece of garlic if the garlic turns black its no good.If you have squirrels around your house they usually eat mushrooms if they are not eating them they are poisonous.
i would not trust in this method..
(green/blue bad, white/grey good, I think but check with a professional!)
Also, I love your gardening videos and I have a question of my own. So, what am I doing wrong!?
u got any friend that have mushroom farms. if not u could follow the guy that sells them to your local supermarket and ask him
I am from Romania and I know these mushrooms we call them calla and are good to eat u can make sandwich with fried eggs.
They smell like wallnuts.
Be safe.
Those mushrooms are called Calvatia booniana they are edible when young and white inside. Search it up if you don’t believe me
looks nothing at all like a giant puffball. you're dumb

Just watched a youtube video that said white on top and white gills are bad

Did you do a spore print - if you did, what color was it?
Peace~
My Dad, Many Years Ago, ate the Wrong Mushroom, and it made him Extremely Sick. He NEVER Ate Mushrooms again. Lived to be 91. I see the ones you showed all the time, but I Don't eat them. Would like to know myself.
You can always try it on someone you dislike...
Short films ABC and kill them right?
lmfao
Jake I'm not a fan of your MA and you know why. But I have a question, you like growing your own fruits etc. Why don't you start keeping bees for honey? You have plenty of space plus nothing beats organic honey.
PadMAD3k honey is a product taken from animals.
honeybees are usually more trouble than they are worth. I've never had a problem with pollination from wild insects locally
Ray V No you don't take everything you always need to let some for them so they will survive the winter.
If I had the space here I would keep bees.
PadMAD3k ok so if I rob you but leave a couple dollars so you can get the bus home, then it's not robbery, right?
it's how the bees earn rent money
Hi do you grow prickly pear ?
I've heard, you can eat any mushroom. once.. lol
Thats a deathcap mushroom lol
You play celtic heroes
I don’t know but they grow in my garden too similar ones
hi Jake can you plant a cactus fruit in new Jersey
Jake!! DO NOT eat any of your home grown mushrooms!! Don't listen to any of your other viewers! How well do you know them? Not very...you don't know me but at least I am trying to save your life. Think of Pam..would you let her try it first?? I think not!!!!
No it can cause burning and headaches
Camara lady please introduce her
oh and they get giant
One sure way to tell if a plant be it berry, leaf, mushroom, etc is toxic is to crush it with your hand and then rub it on a part of your hand or arm. If you react with a rash, then you shouldn't eat it. If it doesn't react, you can try to eat a small amount and then monitor yourself if you have any reactions. This technique is a bit risky and usually only used in a survival situation. Better if an expert can verify.
Trip
That variety is edible. ..
make sure to wash your hands after handling these. I smoked a cigarette after pulling wild mushrooms from my garden and found myself at midnight violently vomiting in my front yard.
Oh how cute but I don't think you shold eat it
You need to cut it in half for anyone to be 100% sure. some mushrooms look the same on t he outside but one will be poison nd the other delicious
not an expert yet but I think that was a portabella
My family knew a guy who would go hunting for mushrooms regularly and he accidentally eat a poisonous mushroom and ended up dying.
how about just ordering a kit and grow your own then you dont have to guess
did you eat them?
Mycologists are mushroom experts. I'd suggest to seek their consulting.
If we donate $1, will you eat it?
If you don't the mushrooms just don't eat it
