- Bob Ross was a prolific painter who created and starred in the popular PBS television show The Joy of Painting, where he taught viewers how to create landscapes using the wet-on-wet technique. While he was well-known as an optimistic, soft-spoken artist - the Mr. Rogers of painting, really - there is quite a bit of amazing Bob Ross information out there that the public may not know. For example, what did he do before he started painting? How many "happy trees" did he actually paint? And exactly how did he feel about his infamous perm?

My grandmother actually painted many of the works that he did on TV. I still have some to this day. Not Ross originals, but they have the spirit of him and my late grandmother.

my mom was into it for a while, too, both bob and the german guy, we still have dozens of vhs tapes filled with both their shows but she wasn't ever really that good. they make it look so easy!
I have things from both of my grandparents, and they raised me. Hold onto those, cherish them for as long as you can. Every time I look at mine, the memories they bring are priceless to me. They are some of the most valuable things I possess.

I worked with Bob for 13 years. He was an interesting man. He was more comfortable with an audience than one one conversations. When I told him a friend would put his show on to nap, he replied "I don't care why they put it on, as long as it's on". His calming voice was his magic. Hypnotic. After all my interactions with him, I have nothing negative to say about him. He always knew his paintings "would never hang in the Louvre" but it was never why he painted. He lived modestly, and his neighborhood friends would bring him any animals that they found injured. He took them all. I also met pea pod when he was tiny. But he bit so Bob wouldn't let me try to pat him. Pea pod loved Bob and he did live in his shirt pocket.. Bob was really a celebrity among his fans...painters or not, and he never hesitated to talk with them for as long as they wanted. He was very special in many ways...

These are really great memories you have of him. My Mom, for the first time in her life, at 73, has a hobby that she really enjoys. She loves Bob Ross. She watches his show and actually does paint while watching. She has ordered his DVDs, books and paint supplies. It makes me happy that he makes my Mom happy. His goal of making people happy has been accomplished many times over, even still.😊🥰

@@poprocks6576 hi, this margo, I don't think Bob was a saint...not even sure he would have liked being referred to as such. He was very human. I had occasion to be his vent release for my company if he was unhappy or had an issue with his products we made. He NEVER raised his voice in anger
@@poprocks6576 sent too soon...as I was saying, he never raised his voice to me in anger, or was inconsiderate to me. He was a gentleman at all times, and he did love his fans. Especially the young kids. He gave people time to talk to him after a demonstration. I liked that about him. He wasn't the type to act snobbish to his fans or try to get away from them as if he was "too important" to take time to listen and talk with him. I think they made him feel good. After retiring, I ran into my old Battalion Command Sergeant Major. He was my kid's Biology teacher.

I first watched him when I was. I was already into art. But watching his process and hearing him talk was motivating. It made me want to pick up painting and paint whatever I wanted from mind. As an adult I frequently watch him as I sleep 😅

I was in the Navy and I got tired of having to yell at people all the time. It wears on you, I feel what Bob was saying.
I'm asking out of curiosity, what's the exact purpose of the yelling? Is it meant to reinforce discipline? And are the people "in charge of yelling" taught any psychology-based methods before starting the job?
Yelling is important to be able to function under the unbelievable pressure of war. yelling also makes you quick to follow orders. If you were never in military, it probably doesn't make sense. If you were in combat with rounds flying over your head and mortars rounds blowing up all around you, the yelling makes sense. It just may save your life one day.
Military people have explained to me that they traiin behaviours into you to make them automatic, so that in a time of crisis you will do what you have to without pause, and get it right first time. That would include giving orders so they can be heard over lots of background noise. Perhaps shouting becomes the default？ I dont blame Bob for going the opposite route when he could.

When I first discovered him completely on accident, zapping through late night TV, I was immediately fascinated and hooked. I never was and still am not really interested in painting, but watching him paint actually made me cry. It was just so beautiful and you could tell right away "this guy is just great!".

I learned a number of painting techniques from Bob when I was a child. My cousin and I used to watch Bob Ross on public television like it was a soap opera! I thought his hair was "magical" because he was a white dude with hair like ours and I couldn't figure out HOW his hair grew like that! (Give me a break I was 9.) Haha!! I loved that show.

I was shocked to learn Bobs hair wasnt naturally like that. My dad has red hair and blue eyes and always had hair like that! In the 70s theres pictures of my dad with a pick comb in his hair lol. So it just seemed so natural to me and i think kinda drew me in watching as a kid because he reminded me of my dad in a way.
People who haven’t had perms, or straighteners, or read Haley, have no idea what a gift it was he kept it to be a stable, kind presence. Like character design 💙
My grandfather loved Bob Ross.
My grandfather was a painter in his own right but in his later years he painted landscapes similar to those Bob Ross demonstrated.
Only complaint he ever had was when Bob Ross would put that half seen giant tree in the forefront. My grandfather would groan and say....now he's ruined it. Sad both men were a huge part of my childhood and both are gone.

My great aunt actually took up painting because of watching Bob Ross and a few others on PBS. She was always creative and artistic, but had never painted. She said that one day after watching Bob, she decided she'd try painting. She always wanted to try it out. She bought a couple of books, bought some paint and brushes and started painting. She was in her 60's at the time.

I enjoyed Bob Ross because he was so soft spoken. I would imagine being taught how to paint by Bob. And his soft spoken voice would encourage me through whatever mistakes I made. The show was very relaxing and soothing.

bob ross actually taught a painting class at my great grandmothers craft store in the late 80s! just learned this the other day, and pretty darn cool.

I grew up watching this man. I'm not a painter, but a chef. His attitude towards art helped me to love creating happy little dishes that touch all the senses
He seems like one of those old family friends you can go to when you are stressed, and when you're done venting he says "come sit , paint with me" and then you forget why you were stressed in the first place.

Ever since I was little there wold be screaming and loudness either in my neighborhood or in my house. It kept me uo all night, til i found bob ross. He was my idol, I watched hii im everyday, sometimes to fall asleep, somtimes for entertainment, and even sometimes for painting along. He has always inspired me, to be happy. His quotes are so postive and heartwarming, "Everybody makes mistakes" "No mistakes, Just happy accidents". I quote him everyday now. I wish he were still alive to this day. And i wish everyone would have an attitude like him.
I remember watching this when I was a kid. It was on in the morning and sometimes in the evening. My grandmother and I would sit there and watch the show and everything was quiet and peaceful while the show was on.
I totally watched him for the soothing effect. I loved laughing at his descriptions of the happy little trees, and when he would give them friends..lol.

Yo I used to watch this guy on channel 8 here in Texas. He was always so calm an cool. Sporting the best Afro of any white man I ever seen.
He inspired me to want to paint.... Although I never did 🤣🤣 Yet almost 30 years later, I still feel a compulsion to paint a beautiful Alaskan landscape full of trees and calm rivers
Thanks to the uploader. I never knew that he was inspired by the beautiful State of Alaska. I was there in the summer of 2016. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. So beautiful and wild. If you ever get a chance to to go please do so.

When were kids my sister and I painted several of his paintings in real time back when his show was on. Our paintings didn’t really look like his but they did come out looking awesome! I miss Bob Ross! He definitely was a very cool dude!
As a comic book artist (and writer), i been watching him all my life, he was an amazing artist. Sadly, i suck at drawing backgrounds, but i learn drawing happy trees from him, and montains.
Went to hobby lobby to get art supplies. His whole section was sold out; paint brushes, tools and paints alike. He is a legend.

My dad absolutely adored bob ross.
My father is a bigoted, narcissistic, sociopath but for the longest time we had this painting on the table in the living room and one day I asked my mum who had been separated from him for at least 5 years, who made it and after I described it she said my dad did while watching bob ross.

He turned into a different person when he watched the joy of painting, this calm demeanor just blanketed over his personality and he became a better person..

I've loved watching Bob Ross as long as I can remember & I've even bought his products (they're actually high quality & affordable) but I never knew anything about him or his history.

I watch Bob Ross from the age of 9. Back at the beginning in the 80's. And still watch him on PBS to this day. Even on the days they don't air his show, I go to the RUclips channel and watch episodes. Helps me fall asleep. Watching Bob for almost 40 years now. Was so sadden when he passed in 94, I had just graduated highschool. And my television friend was gone. But he still lives on 20 years later, still making friends.

It makes me smile to have this pop up in my suggestions today. I knew Bob Ross because my Grandma Diana (the Diana referred to in this video) loaned him animals for the show. I just found out last night that she passed away a few days ago. Seeing a reference to her in this made my heart happy. They shared a love of caring for wildlife that has always inspired me.

Bob broke himself and turned into a painter. This similarly happens to a lot of military vets when they leave what they use to do behind and start reflecting.
It can take knowing you are powerful and formidable to be able to be comfortable being soft and kind without it being a weakness.

I love this guy! I used to watch him as a youngster, I would be enthralled by his ability to make happy little trees from vandike brown. I would sit a watch him for hours. And when he would flitter bang out the water from his brushes used to amuse the heck out of me. Like I said I love this guy. We miss you Mr. Ross!
I have always admired Bob Ross. I seriously tried to paint but I wasn’t very good. My family is full of amazing artists-from classical composers to sketches of my children and I over the years sitting in a local restaurant for dinner. All of us were classical musicians, and dancers. I love thinking of the adventures we took when we were a young family. and even though my father passed away in 2012, and my mom is not able to play her viola or dance anymore, I feel like the luckiest person because of the joy, love, and lessons I learned just through their examples. I wish more parents (and just people in general) could see how valuable creativity is and how it enhances every part of a child’s life, even when that child is 52, like me. Bob Ross exemplified the joy of the creative spirit. He taught millions of people to see the forest and the happy trees that make up that forest. Thanks for this video! I love learning through Weird History. Cuz We’re all a bit weird, right?

There was an episode I saw where he did a painting with a campfire scene in middle of the woods. It was dark yet full of bright glowing reds and oranges too. There was a silhouette of a man in it 🙂 That was the only episode I recall seeing a human being in, tho there could have been more. I’ve watched most episodes more than once ❤️

I once heard of a poll amongst surgeons whom specifically train in hand/arm surgery which finger they would least wouldn't mind losing, and by far it was the pinkie ... as for the most, that came out be both the thumb/fore-finger, as the combination of both is where most of your grip comes from, especially when holding surgical instruments.
So to lose 1/2 of his index finger must have taken a great deal to recover from, especially if it was his dominant hand.
The fact he bounced back from such a nasty accident, is just one more thing to admire about him ...
Bob Ross was the best man of our time.
My son's and I watched Bob faithfully for many many years and thanks to him they are all very fine artists. RIP Bob

Actually, his paintings are not up for sale. There was a video about the organization that owns them and they said that they have almost all of his paintings stored away in boxes with no plans to auction them off any time soon.
@@Hopeful_dreamer i heard this also. I think the Smithsonian Museum is getting some, the lady that "discovered" him had a copy of then in her house, and the rest are in boxes at the headquarters. I believe it was a Journal RUclips video?

I took a week long class from bob about 40 years ago I had to work hard to get there and loved every minute of it He came down to the Holiday Inn by where I lived in Long Island NY he drove down in a Volkswagen Bus with his son from Alaska it was one of the best things I did watching this video made me happy I wish I had one of my paintings I did a lot and gave a lot to friends family and church thankyou for this video❤

One day I was out with my 3 yr old & saw a dad with 3 kids (around my dad's age) my daughter says "mommy look bob Ross!" & I said to him "dude I love your bob ross t-shirt her father & I are fans". He was surprised my daughter & I even knew who bob ross was 😲 I could tell it made his day. That's how magical Bob Ross is. 🎨
I loved watching Bob Ross's show on PBS. As a child, it's curl up on the couch and watch him paint and would inevitably fall asleep. Bob Ross and Mr. Rogers, two saints. ❤

I used to get home from school, turn on his show and it would instantly put me to sleep. I took countless naps over the years while Bob's show played in the background. His voice was so soothing. RIP Mr. Ross and thanks for all those happy healthy naps!

My favorite show the weekends as kid was watching Bob Ross! I remember watching him in complete amazement of what he could do with an empty canvas. Adding reflections to the water here, a happy tree there. Decades later I still watch the reruns. I do on occasion try to listen while I sleep. But find myself waking up to how he completed his paintings even though I have seen all the episodes a thousand times lol. RIP Bob you are truly an inspiration!💕

Whenever I ditched school I would always watch The Price is Right, I Love Lucy, and The Joy of Painting while half asleep. It was the best.
I enjoyed watching this and had no idea about his mentor! I discovered Bob Ross in 1988 as a college freshman while flipping channels one afternoon. I was amazed by his paintings, his technique, and yes, his voice and manner of speaking. I loved his show. I also remember learning the color “Titanium White” too. 😊

I love Bob Ross. His show is just so relaxing. I bought the Bob Ross game and it is quite fun. Saw it in the store and just could not resist.

I remember watching Bob back in the day......on PBS? Not sure which channel....but the paintings that he made within minutes......phenomenal...!!! BTW who gave a thumbs down.....jackass...!!!

He was a great calming influence when my son was a kid...he loved Bob Ross and wouldn’t move till the show was over. A wonderful way to give the mom a time-out.
I've been avoiding videos like this in fear I'd learn something disappointing about my all time favorite person ever, but I'm very happy to learn he was always an amazing person.
