    A7R3 is rated to twice as many lifetime shutter snaps - if true that alone makes up the value difference exactly! then there is reported better weather sealing, though it is still not good, much better EVF, much better rear display and two huge advantages of 42MP even if you never make large prints: the ability to find something cool you missed in the field and do a massive crop to isolate it (call it cheating, fine, the point for me is to have fun and increase appreciation of this planet) and the ability to shoot in 18MP APS-C mode and obtain a 1.6Xcrop factor field of view through the EVF without putting another focal length lens on! (then you can still shoot in 42MP/full res mode if you want knowing you can crop to isolate that area later )-incredible flexibility if you want to travel with minimal lenses or just a prime or two. Will you ever use all those AF points on the a7riii or at least the extra ones-likely not! I plan to still buy the A7Riii since I've always wanted a medium format camera to shoot landscapes and make huge prints even after cropping. Do I need it, of course not. Do you need a camera as good as the A7iii, of course not (unless this is your job, maybe, but so many M4/3 shooters who have FF cameras also note their sales are related to the composition and a skilled or lucky shot more than the gear used. Never mind the lens being more important. Also I want to display photos on my 120" home theater screen, and currently the 3rd from the top line Sony LCD projector displays 26MP. So with the A7R3 I can still see landscape shots cropped with no res loss on my >6 X 3' (approx ) movie screen - dramatic post travel pic viewing baby. Plus you get future proofed a little, soon projectors may be projecting 30-40MPs, who knows. Printers will only get better too. Plus pixel shift and no AA filter on the A7riii only makes sharper landscape images vs the A7iii. So for my needs this is a slam dunk for A7Riii. If I felt I was a great photographer and nailed the composition in the field every time I would be less inclined to go for 42MP, but I LOVE having this crop flexibility with no concern of image quality, and doing so in processing should improve my skills in the field. If your spending thousands of dollars on photo equipment, when 95% of the time a smart phone will suffice for what you need, and with so much poverty in the world and good charities, $2000 and $3000 are about equally insane, unless you do this for a living and think clients are really going to notice subtle gear details. I'm going all the way or nothing. Were I not mostly landscape I would get the A7iii though. So excited to get this on a tripod in some incredible landscapes and try the pixel shift and process some panoramas. (hope the clouds don't move too fast though, pixel shift eats up more time between than that of other brands.) Finally, to the A7riii owners who say they are mad about the a7iii, never ever be mad when you can burn even 100, let alone 1000, let alone 2000 on such luxuries! Not only can you afford food and shelter, be happy someone else got a great deal. But alas, we are inherently jealous mean creatures aren’t we? cheers

      A durable shutter unit incorporates a coreless motor and brake system that reduces vibrations to better control shutter shock as well as extend its rated lifespan to approximately 500,000 actuations. So yeah I think the A7R iii does have a extended life span. This was found on B&H.

      Great comment. I’ve been going back and forth between the two for weeks now. I shoot primarily landscape and would love the resolution. Even better, I’m coming from an A6000 😆

      Been looking at the used market for a good all around, full frame. Down to these two and keep going back and forth on which on. Used, there is only about a $100-$200 difference, thinking your points may have moved me to the R. I shoot kids sports, so I'm concerned about the AF, but I think the compromise will be in the ability to crop to the shot since I'm not a pro. thanks for adding the comment

    just bought the a7riii . Using it with zeiss 16-35 and the shots are very sharp. Love it! I shoot landscape and still life and print large. It also doesnt have the aa filter which I think the a7iii has, which softens the image compared to the a7riii. It was a bit of $, but I plan on using this one for some time.

    As an A7RIII owner I can tell you that the lock dial is just annoying, if you asked me I would love to have it without the lock.

    • @phillgriffith
      @phillgriffith 6 лет назад +1

      I am an A9 user, and I agree. The lock on the A9 and A7RIII are pointless. Exposure Comp. dial needs a lock - I keep hitting that - never understood why they never offer a lock. Best solution is what Fuji did with the XT-2 A lock that can be locked out or locked in. Nice. But then everything, design wise, Fuji does, is amazing. The port doors on the Sony are just nasty. But I love the A9 for image quality. Cannot decide on a second body - A7III or A7RIII.

    I sold my XT2 to get the A7III and I think the biggest thing I miss from the XT2 is the superior build quality. To me it felt like a very solid build where as I feel like sony is a little less sturdy. It isn't that big of a deal but I totally notice it. AND the EVF isn't anywhere near as good. Those two things aside, it's a beast of a camera and I love what I'm getting out of it.

    I’m thinking about possibly upgrading from the A7iii to the A7Riii. The only thing keeping me is the difference between AF Points. In real world use, would you say it’s “noticeable” when using AF-C at the edges with the A7Riii?

    What would you recommend for wildlife. Especially birds in flight. The a7iii has better focus but is the a7riii perfectly capable of getting birds in flight? A lot of times for birds you need to crop too, so I was thinking the a7riii may still be better. Thoughts?

    If I can find either of them for the same price second hand, then which one to pick?
    I see the Riii as I get 2 cameras in one; a 42 mp FF and a 18 mpxl aps-c camera. And more pixels is awesome for details
    But I like the video quality and low light capability more with the a7iii.
    I am a photographer first, occasional videographer.
    I mostly do portrait, landscape and cityscapes.

    • @kokolecoco

      I just bought the R3 and I am waiting for it to arrive. I think you should go for it too. I looked at a lot of comparisons and the only aspects in which the a73 does a better job is in very low light situations and thanks to the 60 fps it provides in 4K. If you are more of a portrait/landscape and overall photography type of person the R3 will theoretically be a better camera for you. If you are more of a hybrid or strictly video shooter, the s3 will do a better job at it since its a really great all around camera.

    I'm considering the A7iii but I can't believe it doesn't have a built-in intervalometer. I'd have to drag around an external with me everywhere I go...then I'd have build the movie in my PC. My RX100V has it as an app...what a bummer.

    the better question is.. why not just get a GH5? its more comparable to the R3 and costs roughly $1750 now. Its insane! Only 2 downfalls are its Micro 4/3. which for video, isnt a huge deal, and its autofocus isnt the greatest, however with the newest firmware 2.3, they fix it pretty darn well, i havent had any issues. I just think the GH5 is a more complete package, bang for buck camera.

  • @MyMomSaysImSmart
    @MyMomSaysImSmart 6 лет назад +19

    a7iii doesn’t have even remotely the “same” autofocus system as the a9. Sony was misleading about this at the press event. What it has is the same phase detect autofocus point spread and processor. That’s it.
    Where it differs?
    -a7iii has the 425 contrast detect areas from the a7Riii, far more than the 25 in the a9. This seems to grant it better face/eye tracking.
    a7iii scans its focus sensors/sensor every 1/20s. The a9 polls its sensors every 1/60s. This results in better tracking of very fast action. Due to the stacked sensor of the a9, it’s the only one that can pull off the read speed necessary to do this.

    • @photojournalists
      @photojournalists 6 лет назад +3

      people who have tested the A9 and A7iii have said that A9 is different. You may have the same number of points, but as Wes explained the sampling rate makes the AF behave very differently. So the idea that you're getting an A9 for the price of A7iii is just ridiculous and reviews just need to more careful.

    • @MyMomSaysImSmart
      @MyMomSaysImSmart 6 лет назад +2

      All you have to do is read the specs and you can see that they're not the same. Anyone putting them both to the test side by side have also found the a9 is still faster. It really doesn't matter what some Sony rep says, the facts speak for themselves.

    Your frank, informative & well made video is much appreciated. I an asking you, and anyone else on this channel, for advice & information regarding the a7iii.
    Background information on my situation: I am an enthusiast photographer with no intention of being paid for my work. My photograph activities are travel, recording family events, street, and portraits. I only shoot RAW. I am upgrading from Lumix GM5. I would like to purchase the GM 24mm 1.4f lens along with the a7iii. I find the 24mm range too wide for most outdoor purposes but very good for indoor photos. The Sony crop feature addresses my focal l focal length ‘dilemma’ perfectly.
    Questions:
    1) Without doing a side by side comparison between these 2 Sony cameras, would you notice the reduced resolution using crop feature on the a7iii in printed pics (no larger than 8.5 x 11)?
    2) With latest firmware updates to both cameras, aside from the reduced AF coverage on the 7Riii, is there anything that is anything I would be missing to satisfy by photo activities by choosing the 7R over the 7?
    3) is there a noticeable degradation in the speed with which these larger RAW files are processed using Luminar?
    Thank you in advance for your answers.
    Morrie

    After a bunch of video and reading reviews research, going to shops and trying out the cameras and lens I would mostly be using, the total weight and cost just was not the value I expected. I ended up buying a GH5 with 12-35mm lens and this thing takes incredible photos and completely smokes these cameras with video, especially using IS.
    Sorry Sony, for me, I do not like the big heavy lenses.

    500K shutter life that’s 150% more shutter life in A7RIII which is a huge difference in life expectancy. This means A7RIII should last ALOT longer than A7III
    Also no low pass filter in A7RIII means higher quality image (sharper image)
