Yo it’s MC Knows Too Many Facts About Bees
How did you make that little book I would love to make something like that
This is a sketch book I would have loved as a kid! I didn't have a computer until I was 16 (and worked a whole summer for it), so for years I was "developing games" on paper. I had the map of an entire zelda-like GBC adventure game drawn on a school notebook, pixel art on graph paper, and I even learned and coded in C++ on paper for some time, not knowing whether what I was writing would even compile. Good time.
Woah, that's awesome! haha
I feel like this would do well on kickstarter
If enough people are interested, maybe I can do one?
For a really small game idk if he needs to Kickstart it maybe for the MORPG
@@lyca7016 I thought he was referring to the sketch books I made.
@@Goodgis Oh yeah that makes more sense lol
@@lyca7016 even if it is a tiny game you still get that money
The most fun part of this game will be figuring out ways to cheese Baxtin's bossfight.
LOL
Your game has everything to be a good metroidvania... have you ever thought about giving the Dash and the power to grab the wall after a while of gameplay? That way you release new paths that only pass with these new powers
I'm definitely going to do that! Thanks so much.
That's like Hollow Knight! Cool.
@@qqun all bugs boiiiii
That is literally the premise of a metroidvania
What if Poe actually lost his wings and needs to steal wings from the Wasp Queen or something? Final boss?
You're on to something. ;)
@@Goodgis yeah, they're onto something

those would bee some big wings to steal

level creator is brilliant! That's how original Super Mario's level design was done too :D. keep it up!
Haha thanks so much! :D I'm becoming Shigeru Miyamoto!
@@Goodgis an indie dev Shigeru lol
@@kartarva3556 Haha :p
Halfway through cutting veg listening to this in the background, had to wash my hands to drop a comment because I think this is really cool.
First of all, I think the 'lore' behind the game is brilliant. The art style is lovely too. But the level design notebook... What a fantastic idea. And yes, you spent way too much time on it because it looks really nice :D Good luck with the game, subbed.
Haha, thanks for taking the time to comment and sub! :D What were you cooking or cutting?
@@Goodgis I was making Stew 😁
@@JakeSmout Nice! :D Cooking stew is the best! I make a meeeaaaan chili, but that's about it. haha
Games looking awesome, Rat boss looks great and I still remember when you made him in the live stream a few weeks ago. Regarding the wall jump and dash the gun mechanics should be able to mimic these and maybe if there's limited ammo it will become more of a puzzle platformer.
That’s not a bad idea, thanks! :D
I think you could add items.
For example: After you complete a area 100% it unlocks THE HONEY which allows you to shoot infinite bullets on a short period of time.
Or maybe WAX which could allow to perform wall-jumps
Those are really fun ideas, i'll have to keep those in mind! Thanks!
First of all, love the game's art style, but what I wanna say is: this sketch book is an amazing idea! I need one for my game!
Thanks so much! :D It definitely is a huge help.
The empty level design sketchbooks are an awesome idea! Love your editing and devlogs. You've got a subscriber in me!
Thanks so much! :D
Great update! This has gone from a game I've followed just out of interest, to a game I would actually enjoy playing!
Great to hear it, thanks! :D
how have i just noticed this at 2:58. eggs are on his list 🥚
Hehehe ;)
I don't like bees, but I like chill bees that don't fly around you, and just go for the flowers asap.
Well, then you'll love this game!
this looks likes my kinda game!! from the visuals to the gameplay it looks like something I would play AND love, just found your channel and binged all your vids, keep up the great work!!
Hey dude, thanks so much! :D
I really love how this game looks. Only just discovered this channel - instant subscription
Best decision ever! :p Thanks so much.
Designing your own sketchbook may be one of the most simple yet awesomely creative things that I’ve seen in a long time! Being able to efficiently plot out ideas when they come to you while also having A PERSONAL SKETCHBOOK THAT YOU MADE is SO cool!!
Thanks so much! :D You should definitely try it yourself.
@@Goodgis Cool! I definitely will!
Better than the Godot tileset editor for sure :D
Oh boy, you can say that again. :p
I love the progress you're making with this, still. Can't wait to get my hands on it. I worry that if the Pits is meant to be an introductory stage, some of your jumps you're asking of the player might be a bit... Much. Balancing the opening section is of course incredibly hard, but I think as you go through playtesting (whenever you get there), it might be really helpful to get some specific feedback about the initial challenge of your Pits section.
That's why I wanted to create it first, so that we have plenty of time to test it. I've actually had the Firith team test it and they really love the difficulty of the game. Though I have a feeling some junior gamers out their might have some problems haha. I'll definitely get some feedback when I release a demo.
I have said this before but im gonna say it again... This looks awesome! :D
Thanks so much! :D
I'm very interested in updates. This looks like a great project.
I've had an interest in game dev since age 9, when I sketched out level designs on graph paper exactly as you describe here. However, also as pointed out in your origin story... I started as a graphic designer by trade and-personally-I've yet to finish a title.
Thanks for inspiring me to keep my dream alive!
Heck yeah! Best of luck to you!
4:22 add a lotttttt of secret optional collectibles (like celestes strawberries and hearts)
Ayyye, maybe I should!
Love to see the progression of the game and how you got to this point! Keep it up Goodgis!
Wooow, thanks Bread! :D
Your game is reminding me A LOT of Cave story(one of my favorite games) so I'm pretty excited to see how it grows
Thanks so much! :D It's definitely inspired by that.
I loved the custom level creation sketchbook! Keep up the good work! 👍 I think I'll do the same, it just feels so official and cleanly organized.
Thanks so much! :D
That snake part with a green screen explosion was hilarious!
Keep up with the conent too, gonna be here till the end haha,
I'm glad I made someone laugh! haha Thanks so much!
This project is giving me massive Cave Story vibes and I'm loving it.
I think the lack of many movement options isn't a bad thing. Infact, I believe you should try perfecting the simplicity of your current movement rather than adding more on top of it like a dash or a wall climb. Taking Cave Story as an example: For the majority of the game you only had a simple single jump.
I had an absolute blast just walking and jumping from place to place. Quote just felt amazing to move and platform with despite his base traversal options. I really like how this project is going and I can't wait to see how it evolves!
That's really great advice! :D Thanks so much for sharing.
I'm doing something kind of similar but directly on asperite! I basically made a large canvas and one of the layers is just a white rectangle the size of the screen (320x180, it'sa pixel game and this can be scaled to 1920x1080) with a + in the centre to represent the character. It's on a separate layer so I can move it around, and it allows me to design rooms which are juuuuust within the players visibility so I can tease them with things to come.
Designing your own sketchbook is just brilliant! Really looking forward to see your progress.😃
Thanks so much!
This is brilliant. I wish I had found this video sooner! I was having a hard time having a good way to visualize my level designs for my own metroidvania style game. This is a brilliant idea. Thanks
Hopefully that's helpful! :D
if you want to spice up the areas what would personly do is make bosses a nuisance to the area there in or give them a fleshed out reason they want to fight you. after overcoming a recurring enemy in the area it would change like killing the rat could get rat soldiers to leave opening a new path into a previously hard to reach area.
That's a great idea!
In the GDC talk Designing Shadow Complex the developers (of Shadow Complex) talk about using a very similar system to your notebook to quickly design the game. They used Illustrator and made a graphic that showed exactly what the players movement capabilities where so they could playtest a level and check if there designs worked before spending time implementing the level. You mention having to adjust designs for player movement though the level so maybe a movement guide like the Shadow Complex designers had could help you reduce your design time even more.
That’s super cool! I’ll have to check out the video. I actually failed to mention it but I ended up writing down how high and far I could jump, which definitely saved me more time!
The game looks great so far, keep up all the hard work!
Thanks so much! :D
It's good to see that not having a background in programming still makes it possible. I'm a motion designer. Definitely interested in working on a game soon. Trying to get all of my projects clear from my schedule.
You definitely should! :D
This reminds me of Portal's development. I dont know how they developed the test chambers and puzzles in that game during development, but they had most of the puzzles finalized fairly early on in the game's development, with minor changes to them through out the dev builds as well as in the final release. Your book idea is a really good idea for making your levels. Smart move.
Thanks so much! :D By the way, I love you profile picture and names. haha I'm a huge Earthbound fan.
It'be nice to have an ingame timer for people who wanna speedrun it (like in Gato Roboto)
I'm definitely going to add that! Great idea.
There's a lot I could say about this video, but I just wanna say I absolutely adore the art style of dewdrop. It reminds me of an nes game, which is a really good thing in my book. And don't feel too pressured to release videos all the time, we can wait :)
Thanks so much, that really means a lot. :D
Making a custom sketchbook is really inspiring. ^^ I think I'm going to try doing that.
Go for it! :D
More platforming moves could be cool. I could also see new guns that allow you to platform differently.
Shotgun for bigger jump boost, Machine gun for hover, or rocket launcher for wall jump
Your work is so inspiring and fun looking.
Thank you! Cheers!
Your video are always so QUALITY!! Can't wait to see your channel blow up :)
Thanks so much! :D
I do the exact same thing when developing my games. I avoid using internet, grab some papers and pens, and sketch a story out, it really does wonders
That's perfect!
Cheers! You should create a patreon if people want to support you, and you want people to support you... that'd be a pretty good idea... **Cheers!**
also, congrats on *2k*
Well you KNOW what?! Maybe I will. haha :p Thanks for the suggestion.
@@Goodgis :)
@@griffinbrooks6748 Also thanks for the congrats :D
The story part mentioned here was important, I feel. The success of Celeste was not only because of it's gameplay, music or cool graphics, all of them combined for sure but it had a great story plot underneath all of this.
Heck yeah!
I really think a level editor in game could had so much replayability!
(For me at least 😅)
Your game looks gorgeous so far!
Keep up the good work!
Thanks so much! I definitely agree!
If you want a reference, for me the best platformer (ever) is “Battleblock theater”… have a look! It’s really fun!
Classic!
the game looks beutiful and i love the artstyle keep up the good work
Hey, thanks so much!
Found you on accident... Now im hooked 😊 just subscribed! Keep up the good work.
Hey, so glad you found me! :D Hope to see you around.
So what if after falling into the pits the character finds illegal honey. throughout the game he can track down who took it from the bees. The gun itself can use the honey found in the process. Covering a wall with honey for wall climbing could also work along with putting it on the ground to slow enemies. Just some thoughts. Either way love the progress my guy!
Those are some pretty sweet ideas! I'll have to keep them in mind. Thanks so much! :D
a bow with bouncing arrows would be an interesting weapon.
That could be sweet!
I feel like you can add a sword weapon that would be his stinger, after another accident or after a certain part in the story his stinger breaks and his uses it like a sword, you can also add poison damage I guess? Idk. Also great stuff.
Thanks for sharing! :D
"And to be honest i really dont wanna stop any time soon"
Sometimes foreshadowing is very obvious.
XD
As a story idea which idk how exactly it would be. I saw when the character gets hit he looses its wings. Perhaps that could be vital to the story. And how he learns to do wall jumps. Since it may no longer be able to fly. It helps explains why it uses wall jumps or even dash could be a feature only when the character has its wings (growing wings/fixing its damaged wings) not to over complicate the mechanics just ideas as to how you may integrate story into its abilities.
Thanks for sharing!
This game looks so cool! Finally, the youtube algorithm recommended me a good channel xD
Ayeeee, glad to hear it! :D
I can't wait to try out this game once it drops!
:D
After u beat the game and he gets the wing, u can do a new game plus of sorts and he can fly around!
Maybe he does... ;)
Ok, this is actually great idea! Need to make my own :D
They are super helpful!
Yo love your work bud
Thanks! :D
i love the art style of this game
Thanks, dude!
Such a simple game.
*I love it*
Heck yeah!
Poe just found a gun and learn to use it himself feel weird to me, what's more weird is he know gun is used as a weapon
That's his gun, he loses in the beginning of the game.
@@Goodgis Wait what?? That bee is American?
I love your aesthetic!
Thanks so much! :D
Really enjoy your videos! Just wondering but would you mind throwing up maybe a word doc or a pdf sample page from your notebook on the detail section of this video? I normally just use graph paper but I really like how you've added a section for notes and area. Helps keep things more organized.
I probably won't release my dewdrop booklet, but maybe I can make a more general booklet?
@@Goodgis yeah i understand not wanting to release the dewdrop one but a general booklet would be awesome.

You really should make a big game of this! It looks awesome! :D
I don't think it's going to be that big, just for the sake of finishing it. :D
@@Goodgis Ah! Well, good luck!
I am here just for the funky background music.
Just kidding, I really like the devlog and hope to see more. (But the background music is really good)
Thanks so much! :D
Solid book creation! That's a really good idea for when your on the go to maximize your time, how did you manufacture them after you designed them?
Thanks! I just printed them out and saddle-stitched them. (Which is a technical term for putting staples in it. haha)
maybe the rat boss gives you the dash or a double jump
i am not sure if there will be a double jump but i think you might put the dash back from what i understand i think so yeah and i think his main attack is jumping or something so maybe defeating him gives you like the speeder's fur or something like that that enables the character to dash
maybe make the descreption something like "allows the bearer to accerelate to incredable speeds momentarly" or something
Oohhhh, I like it!
@@Goodgis thanks :D
This looks like it would be an amazing speed running game :)
That's the hope!
a bee with a gun? COUNT ME IN

dew lets you do special stuff like dash or stasis (get enemies stuck)
dew meter refills over time

I have a suggestion: the background for the levels currently feels a bit empty, so what I would suggest doing is adding some cave-like walls that have holes into a parallax background of a big cave. I think the game will feel much more alive that way
That's a good point. I've played around with it but it made the game feel a little busy. But I'll look into that! :D

What if theres a spider den area with a spider boss and webs that make you slow, a frozen area that you can slide on the ice, and a lush area that has enemys hideing in bush's and sort's?
Spooooooky!
I don't know if you're considering it, or you've already done it, but maybe offer journals like the one you made for Dewdrop Dynasty, or the template on how to fully make one on your own if you're a beginner. I use Godot and I really liked the concept of your journal, but probably would not have enough time to sit down and make my own journal. You might make an interesting profit on the journals, not sure. Good luck and cheers!
I would love to develop it more. :D
i have an idea for how to teach the player about the attack down thing
make some broken ground under the gun and the player might try to attack it and maybe like there is no other way out
and make that get the player in a couple of rooms that just start as only use the gun and done and then just be harder platforming (and maybe some secret areas and areas that need more power ups)
and make a place they can destroy which gets them out and in other room but they can only destroy it from the place they go to where the gun was out
That's a great idea!
@@Goodgis thank you :D
