Long term Meraki user here. Heck I even have 4 years and 299 days left on my licenses, but recently I moved to Pfsense. Main reason for ditching the Meraki MX64 firewall is that we've outgrown it. Being limited at 250Mbit on the WAN side is a 50% reduction of my internet speed (the ISP does give use a "free" speed increase every year or so). After having tested Pfsense as a VM on a Synology DS1621+ for a week, I bought the Netgate 6100 box. So last Friday I received my Netgate (with 4 years hardware support contract). Man am I blown away by it. Yes Meraki has some nifty features, though I don't think I'll miss them that much on our home network. Im quite certain the Netgate box will serve me well for the next few years.
It would be great if you had a rackmount option for this

Looks like an awesome product gentlemen! I've already recommended purchasing 2 of these units. Couple of questions. When the day comes when the LTE & WiFI cards are available, how would external antennas be connected? Is there a future faceplate option that would host the M.2 card connectors to SMA / RP-SMA connectors? Will Netgate be offering 1G and 10G copper transceivers also?
Suggestion. I'm using SG-3100's at some sites which I'll be replacing soon with the 6100's. Is there a Netgate available "config converter" available I could push my existing config's thru to make the replacement easier? That would be SUPER handy!
Looking forward to receiving my 6100's and great job on, what looks to be, an awesome product!!!

Very keen on this model. Need a replacement for my veterinary hospitals two aging Netgate SG-4860 units and these may be the ticket, even if not in rack format. The higher IPSEC performance and fiber interfaces will be useful as we are building a larger hospital and will need to keep both in operation at the same time together.

can you use the lan interfaces as dedicated routed interfaces (assign IP addresses to each and every one of them?) can you aggregate those 4 LAN ports in a trunk and tagg vlans ?
Can you install freeradius on the 6100MAX?

I have question 🤔 is this can handle 50 user simultaneously have a traffic in and out, also in heat is this device can still work even if the device reach 45C temperature? like stress testing the device if can handle it like months not rebooting it or shutdown.

Very nice product. To check: would it be possible to use one of the Sfp+ cages for 10gbe wan, and the other one for 10gbe lan?

@@ImTheKaiser Hi Kai, Thank your for your extensive explanation! It helps a lot. I currently own a DIY box running pfCE with a i5-5250U for a 600Down/50Up connection. My current setup has my desktop/NAS/Servers in the same subnet and only IOT, GUEST in a VLAN. My switch has 4 SPF+ connections for the desktop/NAS/Servers, the rest is all 1gbit. Currently that is enough but were planning to move to a new house which has 1gbit/1gbit connection and will be upgraded to 5/5 and even 10/10 in the future. Do I need it? NO, but my current setup does saturate the 10gbe line when transferring large files to my NAS (I edit alot of 4k video). In the future I want to segregate the network further and not have the servers and desktops/laptops on the same subnet/VLAN. Thats were my current setup is lacking L3 and 10gbe routing. My unifi USW PRO does support L3 switching but its not known for being excellent at this. So my two options would be: pfSense router with 10Gbe connection, or adding a L3 switch for the routing. Would adding a small L3 switch, and trunking it to the bigger unifi switch work? I have alot of POE devices connected to it now.

@@ImTheKaiser Hi Kai, thank you for the testing! Bridging is indeed not preferred, and not necessary in my setup. My setup would consist of one trunk port or a LAGG of the two 10G ports (trunk as well). Good to know that it holds it speed enough to be a lot faster than a single 1gbit link.
The VPN part is a bit concerning, was that with OpenVPN? Currently my VPN connection is limited by my ISP provider's speed but the CPU doesn't reach above 25% load. A solution would be to use a OpenVPN server on my powerful home lab server instead of it running on the pfSense box, but that is less convenience.

We do not have the complete data to calculate MTBF estimates at this time.

Will the 6100 be updated to optimize for WiFi 7?
Yes, as soon as FreeBSD supports WiFi 7. I'm sure the FreeBSD team could use help with this, so please reach out to them directly if you can assist in any way.

I have a 6100 and would now like to add a SSD. Can you please let me know where I can source a B+M key NVMe SSD? I have contacted Netgate support for assistance and they have been hopeless. They are not even aware of what type of connectors/SSD are supported in the 6100 and are just recommending standard NVMe drives which will not fit in the device, very poor customer service...
Hi, Yes the SSD is hard to find. It was not our design choice. Your best option would be to look at KingSpec or similar brand. We have not been able to find them commercially in the USA.
On "AliExxxxxx" a 128Gb drive with the right connectic is in the $10-15 range (KingSpec ssd m2 sata 2280 128 go M2 NGFF SATA SSD M.2)... so $100 more for 128Gb is really exaggerated from Netgate
is the ram ecc?
No, for a couple of reasons: ECC is more expensive, and you really don't need ECC when using this as a router. The networking protocol is designed to take care of any errors.

Would it be hard to include a paper in the box with this info?
Totally agree. The documentation is online with a picture, but if your router is offline, you won't be able to see the picture.... We'll work on it.
sfp+ for wan ok , but why not sfp+ for lan ?
sfp+ for LAN would be ok as well. The ports can be configured however you like.
@@NetgateOfficial The name labeling is confusing since you can use any port for anything. Netgate should consider revising the naming scheme.

LOL, now these units cost 799 and respectively 899 and are using SATA M2 storage cards.

why not write something on the side what button does what? and add some hight to the plastic so we can simply push it?

I don't know for sure, but I can posit that the button control can be modified to do other things (reset, halt, etc.). I'll ask and point out your good feedback. Thanks!
So, why would anyone buy 5100 anymore?
The Netgate 5100 has reached EOL. Supply chain difficulties, ever increasing component prices, late shipments, etc. The Intel i210 (1GbE) is now impossible to get, so moving to the Intel i225 (2.5 GbE) was the right choice.
Are you serious?? $800 for the BASE version and you ensured it cannot take standard SSD? Thanks, you just lost a customer.
The non-standard SSD was not our call. We were surprised as well. The cost of goods and shipping in 2022 is just ... insanity.
