mainly the wheels, eventually new tires will remove that problem, but the wheels now need some work to get it off. Plus the tires, besides the sidewall much of the paint will come off as the tread wears away
BTW - for a 125, it totally turned a 500 beater into a 1500 beater! And that's bank right there. And yes - if you wait a week or more, you can sand/buff that paint. IF it's warm out! If it's getting chilly where you are, wait a month or more. Which puts us all into winter, so do it inside (don't try to do it to a cold/frozen surface).
Thanks! Yes its been chilly here. About 7 days later the paint isnt hard enough that id be comfortable cut/buff. Maybe in a few weeks if I find the motivation but its good enough.
Dude, this is as real as it gets. This is my kind of channel. I just found your channel and now I have to go back and watch all of your other videos. Good work, man.
I once painted a 1979 Mini in bright red farmsheen enamel, made for commercials, post boxes, machinery, tractors etc. got some practice in on a few old panels to work out the best approach,It came out much better than I ever imagined it would and was tough too😊.
In the late 1980s I painted my 1949 Chevy pickup with a bright red implement paint from a Farm n Home store... I used a reducer and hardener in my mix and threw 1 packet of a pearl additive in, and I did 3 coats... outside, early in the morning, about 40 feet from the house.... It was very still out, I got just a couple of runs, and there were no flash areas or fisheyes anywhere, and the paint actually laid down very smooth.... It actually looked great from 10 feet away, but 3 months later, when I wet sanded the imperfections and buffed the entire truck out (3 entire MY days), it wasn't a show quality, but all I ever got was compliments and people bragging on it... I'd never painted a vehicle before that, and haven't since either.... I remember the total for everything was like $120 at the time..... a buddy lent me his sprayer gun n compressor and sanders...... A guy at a bar sprayed a half dozen vehicles in the parking lot with gravel after he was thrown out, and MY truck was one of them...... That paint is some tough stuff, because you could see where the gravel hit as tiny puffs of dust were left behind.... Not a peck, scratch, chip, NOthin on my truck..... but there were factory paints that had damage and people were not happy....
Great job. Certainly boiled it down to getting paint on a car without all the many steps a lot of RUclipsrs go through. I’ve shot rattle cans instead of the prep to spray using a gun but your approach gave me confidence to go with tractor supply. A ten footer is ok for my project and not I don’t need to spend a fortune on rattle cans. The time savings alone will be with it. Thanks for a practical video that has motivated me and given me confidence to try.
I've painted two cars with that red and yes, you can cut and buff. It holds up well but you'll need to wax it the old fashioned way occasionally. After 5 years it's held up decently, though the price has doubled since I did it 😮
This is one of the best diy paint jobs I've seen here on RUclips. Drape a few large garbage bags over your tires, it's quick & easy. I hope you will get some painting masks, even though you were outside. Very good job!
Car looks nice! I have been looking heavily into this trying to decide if tractor paint or single stage solid for my 54 chevy truck (driver). ONE thing: You are young but soon you wont be - please wear a respirator. If you can smell it, it's doing damage. I take many fun risks in my life that could kill me, but I wear a bunny suit, gloves, and a full face breather when I paint. Surfing, race cars, mountain climbing, and many other risks: Whatever. But risks like this just arent worth it.
You are 100% right. I need to do better with PPE. For your 54 I think it would be a shame to use the tractor paint. While it looks fine now I expect it to fade out in the near future. Thats fine for this car which will be scrap soon. But for your chevy, its maybe only double the cost to use real automotive paint that will resist the UV.
@@spankranchgarage funny we talk about this, I am going to be taking a full face respirator and using a shop vac to force outside air into it, and the positive pressure will make it impossible for fumes to get in… Super safety conscious in the shop Part of me thinks that faded farm equipment looking paint is appropriate for an old truck… I’m certainly not looking for anything shiny, which is what turned me off from Automotive paint. 50s paint jobs weren’t nearly as shiny as modern paint jobs, which is wouldn’t let me to tractor paint… Maybe an Eastwood single stage solid color? But still I think it’s a bit too mirror like for a 50s vehicle. I’m so very much not sure what to do I wish the guy I got it from just left it all the uploading instead of restoring it
My last paint project was a thirty footer. Said never again but you’re inspiring me. Often wondered about those cheap guns and magic paint. Thanks for keeping it real !!!
This one came out okay, but when I go to paint something that's actually nice it comes out horrible. Im about 2 for 5 on paint jobs. Its very frustrating.
For the newbs trying this... those HF purple guns have a 2.0mm tip on them! Very easy to dump on too much paint, and you'll get vertical surface runs. They then don't atomize that great if you dial down the settings and you'll get a lot of orange peel. It IS possible to do it! But don't get frustrated at your skill set if you don't get the desired results. Try to find a gun with a 1.3 tip - you'll get to go slower and more careful, and have a better chance at a good job.
That is a great point regarding the tip size. Know anything about the new HF "black widow" gun? Id like to try a better gun to spray real auto paint on a couple of other cars I am working on. Its 170 bucks so its a gamble as ive seen real professional guns selling used for not much more.
@@spankranchgarage - If memory serves, that's the one that got tested on Paint Society and he gave it a thumbs up. Of course, he's a pro, and can probably use a cheap tray & roller and have it look great. :D
i been using 3.0 tip on a hvlp devilbis for 20 plus plus years for doing rustoleum on vehicles. Always works great for me.. btw i thin the rustolem with lacquar thinner and use the tractor supply store ..paint hardener n i only use 220 grit sandpaper only .. btw ..i will never spray actual automotive paint .. . i'm pure #oldskool
I ran an old C50 chevy dump for years with brush paint on it. Nobody complained about the stone I delivered with it. So I guess the brush paint worked fine
I have painted many old semis, trailers, tractors, equipment, and few cars. The majic stuff was usually my least favorite to work with, I dont know how to word it but its "sticky". Probably due to the fact it soybean oil based, using a strong thinner like xylol (instead of their expensive reducer) and painting on a hot sunny day helps. Used to just deal with it back when it used to be 35 a gal vs 50 rustoleum implement (not regular) when painting cheap stuff but with the recent price hike it just sucks. Ace/Krylon works pretty good too. I usually dump way more hardener too, keeps er shinny longer. Found an old binks spray gun with a good air filter set up at estate auction and it was night/day between the same exact spraygun you are using. Great video!
Awesome to hear. In hindsight I wish I used more hardner. I am hoping to put some good wax on this to hopefully slow down the UV fade. Ive painted equipment with this stuff and it seems to be holding up well but people are telling me this is going to be pink in a few months. We will see I guess.
I used this paint in spray can form to paint my engine block and was impressed. It really took a while to get out of the tacky stage but it really leveled out nice and dried hard seems really durable.
Thanks for doing this video. I've seen this paint at tractor supply for as low as $22 to $30 I was wondering if it was worth the money and time in your video says it definitely is. ❤
This wasn't bad at all. I'd imagine that a job like this in black would be overall better for hiding any imperfections. Rest assured, your job is better than what I would accomplish! 🎉🎉🎉
In the 80s we would paint our Nascar Late Model Ford Thunderbird with Implement paint. Ford Blue looked good from the stands. Once it was all lettered up it was one of the best looking cars on the track. But then in the early 90s everything was pre bent panels and came already painted. The old skinned cars looked better to me.
I've done similar paint jobs. Instead of the old color in the jams I mask and paint the jams and trunk area with cheap black spray paint cost is low but leaves a clean result
Great job! Thanks for sharing! You don't worry about breathing in those paint particles while sanding? As a teen, I once painted a men's bathroom where p1ss had caused massive rust in gray painted metal walls. When I got home that evening, blew my nose, lots of gray sludge came out of my nose - no idea how much made it all the way to my lungs! I didn't make that mistake again! I've lived another 40 years since, so maybe it didn't shorten my life much (hopefully) - Be careful out there. Thanks for taking the time to record and show this - very helpful.
Looks great for the year. Most of the Neons I've seen look like the before. And the color is fine, I've seen a few in bright red, in fact my ex had the 96 in red until she decided to repaint it Pepto bismal pink, and later wrecked it.
Bought one just like this new and it was a great car. Infero red 5 speed and was actually a little bit fun to drive just has a bad reputation. I had mine for 10 years put 38k miles on it and never needed anything but a set of tires and bushings in the shifter. If that one is squishy going into gear it is a simple fix
I like it my guy, that turned out nice. Yes you can cut n buff this paint. Should probably wait a good long time. Maybe just hit it with 3000 grit then a little hand buffing and call it good.
Yes u can cut and buff after about a month to fully cure, used the kubota orange and black on truck and turned out great after cut and buff and you can also 2k clear over it
Crazy how thin the paint was during this 92(ish)-05(thereabouts) era. I have a jdm vehicle from 89 that you could literally snag your finger on just the base coat layer of paint if you sanded a spot down to the primer next to a good spot.
That was the era of early water based products being used more,a lot of it was shit. We used to use an expensive water based texture for bumpers, if you finished in anything finer then 280# it would peel off the surface.
You have to use the hardener. I've used this paint many times. I used it without hardener while practicing and the scrap fender I sprayed stayed soft. I couldn't sand it down to use for practice anymore. Also the hardener works with rustoleum
I have used that paint twice on a car. Definitely use the hardener, and keep it waxed. It will sun fade (at least with some colors) I used yellow and black the yellow faded noticeably after sitting out one winter. The black dulled and greyed fairly noticeably after a couple years (garage kept all year long).
Wish you would have listed the items used to do this diy project I would gladly try it out on my truck never done this before but willing to try anything before paying a pro something about diy just saves money and the knowledge is priceless all in it's own. So I will try diy.
Its not about the paint quality or the painters skill level. It's all about the clear coat finish shot on top of it. And the motivation to buff if necessary.
I've used this paint and am not satisfied at all. It looks great at first, I used Massy Ferguson flint gray. After about a year, it looks like a flat gray primer, and I used everything from their products primer, thiner, and hardener. I don't recommend it. I'm very dissatisfied with this product. I'm repainting with quality automotive paint that I can trust. BTW I've been painting for many years, and it's not like I don't know what I'm doing. Best of luck to anyone using this product.
I used to own a delivery company and I just bought second hand cars and painted them with this, As long as the people knew the the Red. black and blue cars and trucks were mine that's all that mattered. I never fixed the dents or faded and cracked bumpers or anything because the worse they looked the better Painted them with a brush and roller and yes it looked like crap we had paint runs and bad lines and everyone pointed out how bad it looked and that was Great because any free advertising is good advertising , We had people call to order things just to see the paint jobs, All the cars were fit for the road I made sure they all passed a legal safety and had new tires and breaks '' safety first '' , I got to know the cops pretty well lol
Looks dang good from here, it was well worth it IMO. I've got a similar beater your idea might work for. Maybe the paint needed additional reducer to spray out better?
Oil base hummmmmmm. I would of went water base. But all and all i been painter 27yrs and i have used tractor supply paint on work trucks, mud trucks and hood on white car. Oil base is no fun cleaning and prepping for new paint. Oil likes to mold when it fails, plus it will spiderweb crack if to thick when drys or orange peel.. and white vinegar and water is really good for cleaning surfaces before painting or 70% or higher rubbing alcohol. And wet ground before you paint so wind or air coming out gun don't kick anything up on paint job..
OK I did this with Bright Yellow paint. Just after I got a stunningly beautiful wet look coat on the hood one of those giant 3 inch long moths did a three point landing in the geographical center of the hood. His feet stuck in the wet paint but he wanted freedom so he beat his wings rapidly which turned him around in circles in my wet paint. Between his feet and his wings it left an interesting design in the paint, but I had to let it dry and start all over. I knida wish I had covered him in paint and let dry and used him for a hood ornament.
I think it looks great aside from painting the tires
mainly the wheels, eventually new tires will remove that problem, but the wheels now need some work to get it off. Plus the tires, besides the sidewall much of the paint will come off as the tread wears away
That comes off with paint thinner
I mean like some garbage bags are cheap
...and the exhaust pipe.

I’m happy with a 50-50!
Good job on that TSC paint job
Looks really good.
Keep some tweezers on you when painting a lot of times you can catch debri right when it happens and the paint will settle back in.
Might want to add a Clear Coat for more protection. SHe looks NICE with that Fire Red.
I did something similar with handicapped blue parking lot stripe paint. It was decent for 4 years.
I painted my tractor with same paint. It turned pink pretty fast. Maybe a year or two.
Sun plays with your eyes. Direct sunlight reflecting off new paint makes it macco. Shine. Look at it under lights for reality √.
It looks pretty good.
Looks good for a cheap paint job and the time spent on the car !
It’s a Neon, getting a 6/10 when giving a 4/10 is a win. You are right not to push it, the value isn’t going up anytime soon.

As long as the people knew the the Red. black and blue cars and trucks were mine that's all that mattered. I never fixed the dents or faded and cracked bumpers or anything because the worse they looked the better
Painted them with a brush and roller and yes it looked like crap we had paint runs and bad lines and everyone pointed out how bad it looked and that was Great because any free advertising is good advertising , We had people call to order things just to see the paint jobs, All the cars were fit for the road I made sure they all passed a legal safety and had new tires and breaks '' safety first '' ,
I got to know the cops pretty well lol
Nice job!
Very nice!
Looks dang good from here, it was well worth it IMO. I've got a similar beater your idea might work for.
Maybe the paint needed additional reducer to spray out better?
I think more reducer and a better sized nozzle on the gun is the ticket. But all in all its fine for this 500 dollar car.
I bought a bunch of Hammerite blue on discount and plan to roller paint my car with it.
It looks very good! 😎
Red wheels and exhaust.....nice....😂
Good job..i liked it
Great job
Oil base hummmmmmm. I would of went water base. But all and all i been painter 27yrs and i have used tractor supply paint on work trucks, mud trucks and hood on white car. Oil base is no fun cleaning and prepping for new paint. Oil likes to mold when it fails, plus it will spiderweb crack if to thick when drys or orange peel.. and white vinegar and water is really good for cleaning surfaces before painting or 70% or higher rubbing alcohol. And wet ground before you paint so wind or air coming out gun don't kick anything up on paint job..
Looks good from here
OK I did this with Bright Yellow paint.
That's hilarious!
