BYD will achieve global success. I spent 110,000 RMB (15,000 USD) in China to buy a 4.7-meter-long Hybrid SUV (BYD Song) that can drive 100 kilometers on electric power. When the electricity runs out, it switches to gasoline, with a fuel consumption of only 5 liters per 100 kilometers. This is incredible and a very economical choice for ordinary families.
can't wait. ready to throw a deposit at this one. perfect ute for a jack of all trades. great for the family, electric commute, and range for the camping trips. i think they are going to have huge success with this one, possibly their most important model to date in Australia.
it makes perfect sense for city offroader customer who wants a ute but not really towing a bucket load of things meanwhile getting decent fuel economy. It is actually a blank spot for in market.

I just ordered the byd sealion 6 on Tuesday and pick it up next week which I am very excited and very nervous due to it's going the be my first bran new car and first phev but love the brand and love the forum
Its a pretty awesome car my Dad picked up his new sealion a few weeks ago and loving it. its funny because he was all about Plug in hybrid but now hardly use the fuel and just charge once a week so its running as a EV all the time haha. Its got amazing features and fun vehicle!
This powertrain has been widely used and achieved great success in China, which has also made BYD quickly become the number one car company in the Chinese auto market (China's auto sales exceed one-third of the world), and the sales and prices of German and Japanese cars, which were originally the number one in China, have dropped significantly. The feature of this powertrain is that even if you never plug in the car and only run on gasoline, it is still the most fuel-efficient and powerful car in this type of car.
Can't wait. Tempted to wait 6 to 18 months. BYD tends to launch, then when the competition is hurting, sink the boots in and lower the price another $5k. Put that Shark in my driveway!

Traded a G20 330i for a Seal Performance and haven’t looked back. More power than an M3, yet half the cost. And nearly 10k kms and not a rattle or squeak. Nor any issues other than their subpar customer service, but hoping that will get better. Rides great. Great range. Quiet. Quick. And a huge rear seat. Usually a brand snob but the Seal Perf was worth the loss of a badge. If this is BYD in 2024, wait to see where they will be in 2030. Beyond the tech of the Germans, Japanese or Americans. Really amazed by Jaws as we call him. Will be ordering a Shark when they become available and a Sealion 7, if it makes it here. A much better looking SUV than the 6 and full BEV with mirrored powertrains to the Seal. If the Yangwang U8 comes, will def order that as well as thinking hard about the U9. Yeah, hook, line and sinker here. But genuinely impressed with them.
Toyota has a simple rugged ute called the tamaraw made and sold in the Philippines for less than 20k australian. If it came to Australia I would buy it in a heartbeat. so would a whole swathe of Australians who used to buy cheap Aussie utes. BYD will be over 3 times that price. The tamaraw is not a hybrid yet, but will probably be half this price when it inevitably gets there.
Whether you like this car or not (or let’s be honest, it’s country of origin), I welcome its entry to world markets because that raises the bar for the entire frikking industry to raise their quality and innovation game, service levels, value for money, etc, etc. The winner ? You and me. The car industry is just way too complacent, and ripping all car buyers a new one when it comes to pricing and cost of ownership. More competition FTW.

BYD starting taking deposits in NZ 2 months ago with promised delivery pre xmas. They took a LHD model around the country for people to appraise. Prices in NZD start at 60kish
Yea, I usually am not that interested in UTEs but the shark kind of has a classical look, especially at the front that I like. Don't think I personally would buy one because I have no need for a UTE but still.
I have no use for a ute but if I did the Shark would at the top of my shortlist. I really need a van with better range than what is currently on offer. Until then my EV needs are plenty filled by my Seal Performance.
Since BYD launched this type of powertrain system in China over four years ago, it has quickly become the best-selling brand in the market. The prices and sales of traditional German and Japanese car companies, which originally had the highest sales volume, have significantly declined, even the second-hand cars of these brands are not immune.
Utes are so profitable because they're so overvalued for what you're actually getting, it's absurd. great to see BYD bringing something actually interesting and innovative to the most boring vehicle segment.
The most boring goes to the SUV market. 4x4 Utes are a close 2nd most boring. I really want one of the EV makers to fill the old Commodore/Falcon Ute & Wagon segments.
100% agree. I work in the construction industry for 12 years and always have company supplied dual cab ute from triton, hilux, ranger, amarok and now currently is 2024 DMAX. They're so horrible to drive, very sluggish off the lights, uncomfortable, noisy, etc. I can't believe people actually pay $60K to $70K for this thing that has no intention to be used to carry loads or for towing.
I really wish one of these car companies would make a single cab but top of the range spec Ute. There are plenty of us that don't want the dual cab as a bigger tray is more important, but also want all the bells and whistles.
This is solely electric motor drive, the engine is a generator, it’s like the old volt. There’s no stress on the engine except turning the generator. You never have to plug it in if you don’t want to.
The battle of the light commercials looks exciting. For years the traditional manufacturers have rested on their laurels. I'm all for new entrants in the light commercial space and the private vehicle passenger space too.
I was looking at getting the Atto 3 in the first half of this year but then Tesla dropped nearly 10k on the RWD Model Y, so I got that instead. Couldn't be happier with the Tesla but I would definitely check out the Shark this time next year.
BYD electric technology and design is hands down the best in the world and already many Australians are researching and learning about this. Its just Time in the market. Their cars are insane. So are cars from xiaomi, huawei, Zeekr, my fav is the BYD YangWang U8 How much will that retail for in Oz? Americans are wishing they could afford chinese cars but with the 100% tarrifs well the US govt is intent on sinking their economy into inflation oblivion.
Look, if I didn't buy a Z71 diesel in 2018 I would seriously consider it top on the list. Plug in hybrid, plus use it to power your campsite.... Puts most of the canopy modder's nose out of joint there. Looks tidy and cheap enough for what you get.
I have been hanging out for the release of the Rivian R1T in Australia, which feels like it will never happen. I am already a fan of some of BYDs cars and if they release an all-EV version of the Shark before Rivian is here I would consider buying one.
This powertrain makes way more sense for a pickup/ute tbh. Going camping or doing some power tools work, using the v2l and then you can still have the range to get there and back. I think with a Rivian being full EV you'd never feel comfortable enough to do this for fear of being stuck with no juice. BYD were smart to give this a pretty sizeable battery for a hybrid.
@@injinerconevYou do have a point. However, I have been a member of a Rivian owners Facebook group for a couple of years now and the overwhelming opinions of those owners are extremely positive and contradict a lot of the nay-sayers. Quite a few of those Rivian owners do offroading and also tow boats and caravans. Rivian or an equivalent will be very suited to Australia and it's conditions judging by owners reports from the US.
TFL tests Shark in Texas and talks about how small it is. CarSauce discusses Shark coming to Oz and talks about how huge it is. Imagine what the Euros or Japanese would think of its size.
This thing will rip everything else apart and it's about time that the big boys stop taking the piss with their prices and get a bit of their own back.
This car honestly looks fantastic. I would however like to see a long range, long term test 4wdriving it in Australia, to kind of put to rest potential quality concerns. Proving itself to be better than a Ford Ranger shouldn't be the base mark, unless its only about price mark and vehicle sales, but not in terms of quality. Very few people swear by a Ranger for actual 4wdriving and overloading. If it's quality it need to prove itself as durable as the Isuzu d max or hilux. If that's the case, then I'm in. Hybrid tech is definitely the way to go as well for long ranges and overlanding, looking forward to seeing more of this
I cannot wait till BYD produces a king cab BEV 2.2 metre tray back with a carrying capacity of 1.5 tons, and a range compatible with the mid range Cybertruck.
For me a plug in hybrid is the way to go to go. Most of the time we can drive electric only with the freedom to tow and travel any distance you want. About time we started to get some plug in options for us they are the way to to go👍
I drive a Ranger everyday for work. It's the most overrated piece of 💩 I've ever driven, with constant electrical and mechanical issues. And that's before you even have to deal with Fords shocking after sale service.
@@Tommmmmmmmmmmm Totally. I have no choice over what work gives me but I'd never spend my own money on a Ranger or trust a Ford dealership to service a vehicle that I owned.
I had to drive a ranger on an iron ore mine for 5yrs. They look tough but aren’t. They aren’t good in harsh environments. The AC vent selector which is electrically operated would jam and get stuck on defrost… Not good in the brutal Pilbara summers. The whole dash needs to be removed to fix it. This happened about once a year! One of many issues. I wouldn’t spend my own money on one.
Here in 'The New South Africa'; the power to your house will be off for 4 to 8 hours a day, so the fact that it can double as a genset when you get home is a big selling point.
I think it's good for us, the UTE market has become so expensive over the last few years it's become ridiculous, especially Toyota, bring it on BYD and to a lesser degree KIA, the BYD is making the KIA already look old before it gets here if they offer a old school under powered 4cyl diesel.
Yeh reliability and brand perception is the biggest drawback. My wife has had a BYD Atto 3 for 2 years, trouble free, reliable, and given she;s a high mileage driver 60,000km per year, she's saved over $10,000 in petrol and servicing costs. I;m still struggling with the concept of Chinese made cars, but week by week, I'm slowly chnging my mind and might buy one in a couple of years?? Still undecided, if I had to buy a car today be either a Mitsubishi or an Isuzu.
It is the inability to compete with local carmakers, led by BYD, that has forced Mitsubishi and Isuzu to pull out of the world's largest car market (more than a third of global car sales are in China). In addition, due to the rapid decline in sales from 8% to 1%, South Korean automakers have also sold most of their production lines in China to Chinese automakers, and it is estimated that they will soon withdraw from the Chinese market.
You’re spot on with the “perceived” reliability. I know people that have paid top dollar for a hilux over a dmax or a triton. I’ll be watching this space
I'll be getting one as soon as it comes to market... Way better then all other utes.... Who cares about the 3% of the market that care about towing... Bla.. bla.. everything else killers everything else full stop.
Honestly I reckon the real elephant in the room is the Aus press carrying on about a towing capacity most buyers won't actually use. So a request. When you can, I'd love to see this tow a 2 ton trailer & get some fuel / perf stats when you do. That's plenty for a 17-19' single axle van & a sensible amount of weight behind any ute. Let's see it actually do it & I'm all in. Seriously waiting for this to be released. With the novated lease incentives for PHEV until EOFY this has got to have a lot of people interested
Agree, The reviewers drive the car for a week then return it. If the transmission blows up a year into ownership.. who cares? They don't seem to see the value in reporting on long term ownership for normal buyers.
Most Toyotas in the coming years are going to be rebadged BYDs and GACs cars (with a different front and back end), that are marked up heavily for the western markets. BYDs rise is not from nowhere go do a tour of their campus in China which is open to the public you will understand how diverse and large the company is. My first encounter was in 2009 when I realized almost every taxi, I got in to in Shenzhen was a BYD the tech of the car was good but the rest of it not so. Still, I knew this company is going somewhere and if u have a Nokia from the 90s and pull the battery of most likely it will say BYD. When BYD says something, they mean business.
I came across a news article that Toyota Corolla will have the new BYD engine with 2,000km range with a single tank. OMG, Japanese using Chinese engines and soon with CS35 (Chinese Standards 2035), Japanese might as well use Chinese AI for self-driven cars.😛
yet all the western media are still going on about Chinese stealing IP from others. All western brands and Japanese just send there repasentraive to trade fares in china put there logo on and sell for 40× the price in 2024. There is 0 r&d done in the west and Japan.
Many of us are guilty of hearing an unfamiliar company name, and assuming it is a new company. When Hyundai released its first cars to the western world, lots of people thought is was some little startup, with its quaint little cars, not the heavy engineering giant that it really was. (I am NOT comparing BYD to Hyundai... just pointing out that we should never assume anything, without first checking the facts.)
Seal Perf is our first EV and I’ll say I’d never, ever allow any vehicle I own to be a vehicle to grid help. They charge enough for electricity, they should have upgraded the grid many times over. Hence why I won’t have solar and “sell” back energy to them. I’m still a petrol head and have many petrol guzzling vehicles and will always have them. The Seal is just a fun, comfortable, fast little too for peanuts.
Expect Ford has been revising their Ranger PHEV planning since the Shark dropped, as by all accounts - apart from towing - the Shark is superior is all aspects. It’s unbelievable that it beats the Raptor on many levels. Looking forward to off-road tests and how it stacks up on reliability.
If it shares the hybrid unit with the Formula Leopard then the power is super good. I drove the Formula Leopard and it does 0-100 in less than 5s, and its 3 ton heavy, and it drinks 8L/100km. That thing is magic.
Competition is key and having more features in the BYD hopefully makes other manufacturers take note. The reality is this product will suit many city buyers, however with independent rear suspension and a dismal tow rating, many ute buyers wont give it a second look. BYD have also missed the mark with payload for commercial buyers, where the magical 1T payload makes for an easy purchase decision. Time will tell re reliability, however perhaps the equally detrimental issue of depreciation still plagues chinese brands and EVs alike.
Honestly, western automakers went from lookin down BYD straight to begging their respective governments to effectively "soft ban" BYD vehicles with tariffs within 5 years is so funny to me 😂😂😂😂
I have ordered a white color GWM cannon alpha hybrid and due to receive it next week. However I am in doubt of the towing capacity. After watching your video I might have to wait a bit and see how this ute performs
Does the motor have a direct connection to the wheels like a chev volt, or is it just a motor generator, and all the power is from the electric motors?
Is it feasible to upgrade the Shark to full BEV or Fuel Cell, or anything else the future brings. Though PHEV suit my present needs, a petrol motor may be awful in a few years.
Time will tell. The climate of Australia is the harshest test for vehicles; hot, wet, salty, windy, dusty, dry, cold snaps. You can really tell which vehicles are good quality based on what ends up staying on the road. For example; the old generation Ford Ranger was designed in Australia by Aussies, and built international. It has been unimpressive except for reliable. The new generation has already issues. It was designed in USA with similar international manufacturing. The old D-Max was heavily criticised for being unrefined and "too truck-like" but has topped the list for reliability. Meanwhile the Toyota Hilux has been okay, it has only stayed competitive due to excess parts availability and their vast support network. Same things apply for other vehicle categories. Especially Euro variants which make changes for the sake of changes, and add unnecessary complexity. The simpler a product, thr more reliable it is, and easier to keep it alive.
most EVs uses BYD batteries anyway. they are the worlds leading market for Batteries. Tesla uses them as well. Used to be Panasonic but too many problems with them.

And it didn't take long. So imagine giving it another 5 years. The rest have no chance. Giving us more than what we want and cheaper/better than any competitor.. yeah you have my attention and money.
This is incredible and a very economical choice for ordinary families.
wrr
can't wait. ready to throw a deposit at this one. perfect ute for a jack of all trades. great for the family, electric commute, and range for the camping trips. i think they are going to have huge success with this one, possibly their most important model to date in Australia.
Trady can use the power on board on site.
@@jxmai7687 Definitely a plus. No need to bring a generator.
it makes perfect sense for city offroader customer who wants a ute but not really towing a bucket load of things meanwhile getting decent fuel economy.

It is a perfect car for camping.
the included V2L function is a very attractive proposition

I looked at a BYD and the finish was brilliant just so good
This powertrain has been widely used and achieved great success in China, which has also made BYD quickly become the number one car company in the Chinese auto market (China's auto sales exceed one-third of the world), and the sales and prices of German and Japanese cars, which were originally the number one in China, have dropped significantly.
Lol

Which means, thanks, China 😂

Yea, I usually am not that interested in UTEs but the shark kind of has a classical look, especially at the front that I like. Don't think I personally would buy one because I have no need for a UTE but still.
And the price gave me a boner
I hear some legacy manufacturers just hit the panic button.
Yeah when most of them make a proven, reliable twin cab ute at less than 100k I'd say their laughing at what "Burn Your Driveway" is offering
Yeah nah.
I don't think so. All they need is more lobbying. 100% tariff is not enough, make it 300%😂
100% tax,more like national panic
They don't have to worry. They have already lobby the US Government to keep BYD out.

100% agree. I work in the construction industry for 12 years and always have company supplied dual cab ute from triton, hilux, ranger, amarok and now currently is 2024 DMAX.

Hybrid tech is definitely the way to go as well for long ranges and overlanding, looking forward to seeing more of this
If this car come to Australia,it will be kill all other ute brand😢

Totally.
I think it's good for us, the UTE market has become so expensive over the last few years it's become ridiculous, especially Toyota, bring it on BYD and to a lesser degree KIA, the BYD is making the KIA already look old before it gets here if they offer a old school under powered 4cyl diesel.
Dude, I'm in California and BYD is not available here! Otherwise, I'll buy one for sure!
Japanese product was at one time thought of as inferior too. It was called 'Jappy Crappy'.
Is there a wading depth with those batteries being so low?
About time the new Ute Market got a kick in the pants. Bye bye HILUX
BYD 👍
You’re spot on with the “perceived” reliability. I know people that have paid top dollar for a hilux over a dmax or a triton. I’ll be watching this space
For me it will be a BYD Shark or a GWM Tank 500
Ram and Ford sweating now.
I'll be getting one as soon as it comes to market... Way better then all other utes.... Who cares about the 3% of the market that care about towing... Bla.. bla.. everything else killers everything else full stop.
exactly. hopefully it won't feel as pathetically cheap as all the other utes as well.
I hate that we don't get these in the US. BYD makes great affordable electric/hybrid cars.
As well as coil springs all round,I hope it will have disc brakes on the rear
Honestly I reckon the real elephant in the room is the Aus press carrying on about a towing capacity most buyers won't actually use.
So a request. When you can, I'd love to see this tow a 2 ton trailer & get some fuel / perf stats when you do. That's plenty for a 17-19' single axle van & a sensible amount of weight behind any ute.
Let's see it actually do it & I'm all in.
Seriously waiting for this to be released. With the novated lease incentives for PHEV until EOFY this has got to have a lot of people interested
I gather some embargo has been released given another video has popped up on a competitor channel... And sure enough, 2.5t positioned as a negative
You never talk about the rangers faults and there’s many , all good when shiny new
Agree, The reviewers drive the car for a week then return it.
With so much protection for years Detroit 3 cars will be dinosaur.
Welcome to carsauce . Have a nice day. 😊
Vehicle to grid is really good for blackouts.
To me BYD shark is far more appealing than Tesla's cyber truck, but only time will tell which one outperforms the other.
My next truck.
If it shares the hybrid unit with the Formula Leopard then the power is super good. I drove the Formula Leopard and it does 0-100 in less than 5s, and its 3 ton heavy, and it drinks 8L/100km. That thing is magic.
All current car manufacturers around the world have no chance against the cars coming out of china
Looks awesome to be fair
Competition is key and having more features in the BYD hopefully makes other manufacturers take note.
The reality is this product will suit many city buyers, however with independent rear suspension and a dismal tow rating, many ute buyers wont give it a second look.
BYD have also missed the mark with payload for commercial buyers, where the magical 1T payload makes for an easy purchase decision.
Time will tell re reliability, however perhaps the equally detrimental issue of depreciation still plagues chinese brands and EVs alike.
Honestly, western automakers went from lookin down BYD straight to begging their respective governments to effectively "soft ban" BYD vehicles with tariffs within 5 years is so funny to me 😂😂😂😂
Love it ! When are they likely to be launched in Australia ?
I have ordered a white color GWM cannon alpha hybrid and due to receive it next week. However I am in doubt of the towing capacity. After watching your video I might have to wait a bit and see how this ute performs
Does the motor have a direct connection to the wheels like a chev volt, or is it just a motor generator, and all the power is from the electric motors?
Bring it on !!!
Is it feasible to upgrade the Shark to full BEV or Fuel Cell, or anything else the future brings. Though PHEV suit my present needs, a petrol motor may be awful in a few years.
Think Toyota and Ford have good reason to worry(HiLux in particular). I never wanted a Ute until I saw this one🎉
China also has harsh environments, very hot, very cold etc
Wasn't SsangYong (KGM) launching a EV Ute this year, teaming up with BYD for the battery .. ??
most EVs uses BYD batteries anyway. they are the worlds leading market for Batteries. Tesla uses them as well. Used to be Panasonic but too many problems with them.
