Today I'm going to analyze an online Settlers of Catan Cash tournament match. Since there is money on the line, everyone takes these matches very seriously. This is my 3rd round in the online Catan Cash tournament where I play against a top 100 Catan player using the balanced strategy.
In this video, I provide 3 winning Settlers of Catan tips that you'll learn about.
Tip #1 is especially essential to do when there are multiple players buying development cards. It will be very difficult to win if you can't secure a win condition (largest army or longest road).
Tip #2 is something I say all the time. It's the difference between good and great players. It's the difference between winning and losing. If you want to be winning in Catan championships, then you must do this.
Tip #3 is more applicable to online Catan tournaments where you have a certain amount of time. In general, using this tip will save you a lot of time. Tip #3 also goes hand in hand with Tip #2, so make sure to use it together!

That 5-point play at the end was insane.
Thank you!
I was stupefied. I was like: what happened there?
that wood at the end=)
ye it was
Came to say that. Don't think your opponent saw it coming
13:42 "If I build on 9/11, that destroys 2 settlement blocks for black." Illumminati confirmed

o.O
Interesting content. Didn't really know there was such a competitive scene for Catan, but I guess it makes sense. It is a classic after all
Thanks! I hope you stay and subscribe! There really so much more interesting strategy to be learned. I promise you that!
Well this just popped up in my recommended.
I hope you enjoyed the video!
@@DyLightedCatan my house has Catan games ~2 a week and my roomates are actuary's. I needed this video lol
Same lol I didn't even watch anything about Catan ever
Hi Evert-Jan
I also love Catan strategy videos, so much so that I created my own channel. I'd love to show it to people who are passionate about Catan strategy and would love to know what you think.
ruclips.net/video/Y-A0F3sExA8/видео.html
Haha me too! I've now watched maybe 6 videos today
I am very excited that you're going full-time! I love your content. As a new player, I have learned enough to consistently win games against my friends and have branched out to colonist as well. Thank you, DylLighted, and good luck :)
Thank you!! I'm so glad to help the Catan scene grow and that you enjoy my videos!
The passion you have for the game really what’s makes you watching so awesome keep it up!
Thank you! I try my best!
I'm making a prediction that Catan is going to follow in the wake of the chess boom and become another uber-popular abstract game, it certainly deserves the cred
I am really hoping for this and am trying to push the game to something more mainstream!
I'm glad you finally started pursuing a more serious career on RUclips! I think you have a lot of potential. Didn't the teaching job work out after all?
Furthermore: I really liked this video, you were critical, it was fast, and very clear. Sometimes it was a bit messy because you made some mistakes and added quite a lot of comments, but overall it was still easy to follow. I also like your viewer interaction with the suggested pauses and let the viewers decide.
Now I have one suggestion (after viewing all of your videos at least once) which I think is missing or relatively absent, namely analyzing from a losing perspective. I think it might be interesting to show how you lost games rather than won them. Was it because of placement/trades/table talk/knights/unfortunate dice rolls/etc. Maybe analyzing the semi finals you shortly spoke about in the end of this video might be a good one ;).
Continue what you're doing DylLighted, you're doing great!
Thank you! The teaching job was a temporary summer internship, but it required like 50+ hours a week! I agree! I want to start posting the games where I lose - it's no fun if it's just me winning every match. Thank you again for your comment and critique. The feedback is noted.
Randomly got recommend these, I've never watched boardgame content on RUclips.
Subscribing immediately, i love this.
Thank you!! I’m so glad you’re enjoying this type of content! I’ll do my best to only make more and better content.
Oh my gosh that was such a rollercoaster from beginning to end!
It's interesting that even top tier players can make mistakes, makes be feel a bit better about myself 😅
Haha yep. This game had tons of mistakes. It just takes careful watching to see it!

Also, I thought about it and the best undercover name I could come up with was “LowLight”. I like it because it’s kinda a reference of your current name “DYI*light*ed”, and it kinda represents how you’re laying down *low* (being undercover). Plus lowlights is an actual term. Just my idea though.
@@iconx4167 No worries, you already do a lot by commenting and subscribing! That's enough for me. Whoa, I really like that undercover name. I'll consider using it for sure, but some people are really smart and can crack the code!

Hahaha thanks!! I was pretty excited about the clutch steal.
Started playing catan with friends at university casually but with your RUclips I’m hooked. Excited to see more uploads!!

Hey Dylan! Really nice video and i am super happy that you went full time on catan. Loved the game from which we can learn a lot from not so evident mistakes.
P.S: Your trading masterclass was so good, definetly improved my game a lot. Can't wait to see what else you have posted.
Thank you! I'm so glad to see that even a top 100 player can learn a lot from it. Now go beat me up in next time we play :). You did it last time!

Hi there, I just randomly came across your video in my recommended - was an interesting watch, I liked your speed of commentary and pauses to think 🙂 I play just for fun, but it reassured me I was doing the right things and learned mistakes to avoid. Had no idea about the competitive scene!
Of course! Thanks for being a new viewer! Glad I could bring show you a bit of the world of Competitive Catan! I hope you stick around :)

"TOMORROW" has finally arrived! WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVVEEEE. Merci merci.
Hahaha I'm so sorry. This video took me over 20 hours to finish and I pulled an all-nighter working to finish it. It was way longer than anticipated!
@@DyLightedCatan Great video man. Enjoyed the rewinds.
@@DyLightedCatan do you script what you want to say?
@@OkabexKurisu @Iroh I do! The script was about 14 pages long for this video.
To give you context, I first need to record the game, write a script, edit the script, read the script, edit my audio, then put the audio with the video, cut the video down (it was a 1 hour game edited into 30 minutes), make the animations, and finally render it. While it's rendering, I also write a description and then have to make a thumbnail. That's why it takes so long!
@@DyLightedCatan I dont know how long it takes for you to make that script, but 14 pages for 30minutes sounds rough. Like maybe 8 hours or so I would guess. I dont want to judge. Did you ever thought of watching the rec like a couple of times and make notes? If you are a good talker and I think you are you can handle 30 minutes with notes (I understand the first 5 to 10 minutes of the game are very important so maybe put more focus there) and at serious events maybe just pause the game and talk at about that specific point. Just some ideas.
I do appreciate all your time in editing, animations and so on and over time you'll sure get faster with that. I really laughed after that rewind thing.
So excited for more content! I love these videos!
Thank you! I will do my best to make more!

For Twitch? Oh wow! Thanks! I’ll be trying to setup my first stream soon!
Great commentary DyL! Thanks for your videos, they are always fun to watch. That ending was so epic, I guess your opponents did not expect you to be able to win at all. You are so good, but still have a lot to learn I see. I'm not really good at catan, but I'm pretty good at speed chess. So here are two more tips to add to your list, based on my experience of speed play: 1) think ahead. It is not always possible with incomplete information, but it can save precious time and decrease frustration. 2) attack people's clock. Play the game in such a way that your opponents have to think more, and thus are more likely to make suboptimal moves. This might involve fake trades and talk in chat - whatever is at your disposal. I'm not sure, but maybe that slow trade with black was intentional on their part?
Love it! I didn’t think about making harder decisions for opponents to run their clock. The stalling with trades is a common and annoying tactic. Totally agree with planning ahead! Something that I recommend to attack opponents’ clock is that when placing settlements and you have an easy decision, place it down now! Your opponents are thinking on your turn, and if you can make them place on suboptimal spots due to time that’s great!
@@DyLightedCatan Cool, glad you liked it. Thanks for the tip with settlement placement. At my level there is no such thing as easy settlement placement, but I look forwards to the time when it will be. Love your videos and puzzles, best of luck!
Of course! No problem!
Wow, that's a really cool video! Very well explained so it's easy to follow your thoughts.
I didn't see that you were perfectly set up to go from 5 points to victory with only 2 woods. That surprised me a lot!

I honestly thought you will loose this, but then boom. Great Game!
Me too at the beginning of the game! Black was so far ahead while I was stuck at 2 points.
That play at the end was great!
Thanks!
What a steal of a win! Largest army and longest road when by your setup you should have been behind for both of them.
Why do you think blue and black waited so long to get to 5 roads/3 armies?
Thanks! Great questions. I think black wasn't aware I could steal army from them and I think the others didn't want to take road yet to look scary.
Hi DylLighted. Why would you start with brick grain sheep rather than ore wood sheep? wood>brick for you and ore>wheat. Disagree with settlement order, though totally agree with setup.
Great point! I think starting with ore wood sheep has its own advantages such as being able to sell the wood early for ores. I should have thought about this a bit more. Perhaps you are right.
I really appreciate your style of content! You have a talent of making it easy for viewers to learn the skills and strategies you are focusing on during the video. Thanks for posting and I'm looking forward to your future videos!

Go for it, happy youre taking the leap 😃
Thank you! It's scary for sure, but I'm ready for the challenge. Thank you for being here to support me.
I also think building a city first to 5910 is more valuable, cuz ore is more important for you and you are going to double up your wheat production by building to 3:1 and if you are building a city on 8411 you are too vulnerable to robber on 4 wheat. Also, as you mentioned in the video, black doesn't need to protect his 4 wheat which is shared with you. Smart play by black. Yeah evening up brick/wood ratio is good, but building 2nd city is more important here on key 11-point spot IMO. Thanks for posting videos, keep it up please. Very informative to watch.
Thanks for commenting and showing your thoughts! I appreciate it! I think both cities have their strengths in weaknesses. You pointed out the strengths of having the 5-9-10 upgrade very well! I appreciate the compliment! I will!
yo today I played Catan on a world map with 3 different players and half the time didn't know what I was doing. And suddenly I won with 12 points with a killer roll making possible a settlement AND a city. This was my FIRST game and the other guys seemed to have had quite some experience. I was rolling on the floor because it was so unexpected. :D longest road, 2 vps, 2 cities, 4 settlements. I was cracking up laughing :DDD Imagine a random dude with no gist of whats going on beating you at a game you frequently play. So stupid but brilliant xD Also had the lowest stats in all categories, didn't use knights properly etc... the irony and the guy with 11 points got 66 ressource cards MORE than me. :D I was asking them what the (9) next to the trophy symbol was and then realised these are my development card points which the other players cannot see - thus I even gave away my real score without noticing. HAha , also robbed someone who had no cards :D
Sounds like you had a bunch of fun! So glad to hear that!
If you captioned all your videos, you would have a large Hispanic following. You analyze very well and there are no Hispanics doing content. From Argentina
I’ve already started doing that!
damn bro good luck on making catan and yt your only source of income! Heavy step to take!
Thanks! It’s scary of course, but I’m ready to go all in.
Great video! I'm just curious at 8:54 and 11:07 why you are trying so hard in your trades to get 2 ore? Are you trying to build 2 dev cards, or are you going to risk holding out for a city, even though you would end your turns at 9 cards? I think someone might have accepted a 1:1 sheep or wheat for ore in the 8:54 turn, which let's you build a dev card and gets you to 6 cards. If I were in this game and someone with a lot of wheat was asking for 2 ore, I would assume they're building a city that turn and would never trade. Curious to hear your thoughts!
Hey Ashwin! Glad to see you here. I mentioned this before, but selling the wood and bricks early in the game is important as the road player. As the game progresses, wood and brick only lose value (generally). Here I am trying to do a "value trade." If I can take away ore from my opponents and gain it for myself, that's strong value in general. I would probably buy dev cards if those trades when through. Holding at 9 cards is too risky.
Vamos dylaaaan! Abrazo de argentina!
Gracias amigo! Go Argentina!
That last turn was INSANE
Thank you!
Having seen a lot of daylighted videos now, I've always noticed that your biggest weakness is Time.. lol
Thank you for always watching. I truly appreciate it. This video took me over 20 hours to make - going full time should allow more videos.
good luck my dude
Thank you! I will do my best.
The crazy thing about this game is that dyllighted score only increases on 3 turns. he settles twice to get to 4. then cities to get to 5. then takes road, army and settles to get to 10. ruthless!
Thank you! Didn’t notice that!
I might be first twitch follower which is cool :)

Black did a blunder not playing the knight. That 5 point bump was awesome
I wonder if Las Vegas and all of the major gambling places worldwide are going to make bets on board games next?
That would be super cool! I would love to play in some high-stakes Catan.
Great video. I especially like the tip about trading away brick for ore in the early game when you are a road player, to try to get an early city.
Dylighted: I wonder if you have any other tips for winning as the road player? Especially when playing against less experienced players. I feel like whenever I play the road strategy, I get robbed way more than when I play OWS. I could be on 5 pts and the OWS player has 4 pts and 3 dev cards but I will still be the one targeted.
Of course because of this I try to play OWS when possible. But on some boards there are just 1-2 good ore spots that get taken by the first 2 players, and then there is no option but to play the (ultimately doomed) longest road strategy.
Thanks for asking, if you haven't, watch my other videos where I go over how to play longest road. A huge mistake I see a lot of road players make is splitting their road network when they are too far apart to connect. It's essential to commit your roads to mainly a single side unless you can connect.
@@DyLightedCatan Thanks for the tip, that makes a lot of sense. I also watched your video from March about playing longest road and that was really helpful.
One thing that I should practice more is how to manage the table talk more effectively so that the robber is not always just targeted at me (because of being the road player). When playing OWS it is easier to just lay low and avoid the robber that way, but maybe a road player has to be more active in pointing out how the OWS player is the hidden threat (despite being behind on the point count).
Glad I could help you out! Thanks for responding!
20:00 I would have started to build down to the 5 and 6 so I can share it with blue and green so I can always get wood and trade it to black since he doesn't produce any
Great video again. it was very quick with a lot of input. I also agree with Giel: it would be very helpful to show the games you lost!
One question though:
Why did you place the robber one the 4 wheat at 28:50 ? Wouldn't it have been better to block the 6 ore since wheats just rolled?
Black just ported 8 wheat for 2 ores. He doesn’t have much wheat in hand now. I would rather block the wheat now.
Holy moly that 4 rolled so much.
It totally did! Unfortunately, most of the time my 4 was blocked. Black was the main benefactor of the 4 rolling a bunch!
Omg this game blew my mind. I didn’t even think he could win
When you start streaming, is there a chance you'd play with viewers/subscribers on a regular basis? That'd be fun.
Of course! I already do viewer games in my discord. Join my discord if you want some action. It’s in the description.
Actually, it's not too bad, pretty large for colonists... except for the miniature port symbols. Brilliant advice thank you.
Glad I could help!
jeez, i'm over here just thinking about why the 2 mountain isn't giving me any ore....
Hahaha we all start somewhere! Thanks for watching!
Let’s goooo! Hype it up
Indeed! I try and put my 110% into every video. I hope it shows.
Can you persuade Colonist to introduce a separate timer for initial placements vs. rest of game play? I suggested it on their site but it's not getting much traction
I've actually already suggested it to them myself. I'll bother them again and ask for this!
This just hit my feed, wow didn't know this was still going so strong. Haven't really played much catan since SM has put out such strong games. I found the game very dependent on the first 2-3 rolls hitting big or RIP. Played more sea catan than anything as it was a little more balanced, but where the dice wouldn't hit you were dealing with disinterested players for 90 min. Seems like gaming has moved on to light weight 45 min session games, your thoughts?
Thanks for the comment! I find that the base game is still going on very strong! The game can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours online. I think the game is overall pretty balanced. The game is a lot less luck than you think!
Bro! so many lessons in such a relatively short video. A question tho. How angry or just emotional do you really get when, say, your number is blocked and it keeps rolling (like the 4 wheat in this video)? Do you really keep your cool during game?
Thank you! I do manage to keep my cool pretty well. I try to distance myself from emotions while I play and just think analytically. It does get annoying getting gang robbed or blocked but it's all part of the fun! I hope this helps.
29:04 "I use a combination of strong logic and brute-force memorization in order to track people's cards." You are a programmer, DylLighted. Aren't you?
Seriously, I thought that to say it like that was a joke :D To me as a non-native speaker it sounds like a highly exaggerated way of saying what one does.
I'm actually not, but I've always wanted to learn CS.
A programmer probably would have said “brute force calculation”. -from a CS major
Thanks for helping me destroy my friends in Catan every time:)
No problem! Thanks for watching my videos :)
People often call wool "sheep", very common
People usually call grain "wheat" as well
Same with lumber and "wood"
And even ore and "rock"
The only one people never mess up is brick, since it's clearly brick lol
I’ve heard brick called clay 🥴
Happy to help you make this your full time job. If you offer personal tutoring sessions I'd be happy to pay for some.
Go ahead and email me at DylLighted@Gmail.com. I do coaching on the side, but I don't actively advertise it.
Hey this is great gameplay but my question is why did you keep trading for ore when you just needed a brick to get a settlement on the 2:1 sheep port? I noticed you had so many sheep that you could have used efficiently if you built your port first than trading for ore.
Yep - I agree. I think I said in the video that was a mistake. If I didn't say that in the video, then thanks for pointing it out!
DylLighted - Catan oh I might have missed it so my mistake then. But this was a great video with commentary! 😊👍
7:30 I wouldhave just played an aggressive knight, either this turn or next turn. you would have had a good chance to steal a ore from gray and on top of that you could have blocked the much more valuable 6 ore spot again.
Great suggestion! I wish I thought about it a bit more. The biggest issue is that if I don't get the ore, I'm left defenseless and my hand will be stuck even more.
I love all your videos but disappointed it is in colonists when it's so hard to see with my device (or my eyesight hahahaah)
Feedback noted. I definitely understand how it's super tiny on the right side. Thank you for letting me know!
Is there a reason you chose to stream on twitch rather than RUclips?
Great question. On Twitch I feel as if there’s a lot more viewer interaction and I’m going to be streaming more. I wouldn’t want my channel to be littered with a lot of 6 hour live streams, so I decided to keep the live streams separate from my channel. Hope that makes sense!
That was sick at the end
Since when can you play a knight card before rolling the dice?
Always! Most people just don’t know that rule.
Hope doing this full time goes well for you!
Me too! Thank YOU for being a part of this journey and helping me out!
genius finish
I appreciate it!
What about the 8/10 with the 8/10/11? You can probably beat green to the wheat port
I love the idea, but I think that's a bit too low production. Thanks for commenting!
it would be really cool and helpful in the analysis vids if you add arrows or circle the object your talking about
Got it! I tried my best to add as many circles and arrows, but looks like I need to do more!
What I am interested in: How do you track accurately under time limit? I am pretty sure it takes like 10-30secs each turn at least and you also need to think about strategy as well.
Rocky712 - Let´s Plays I assume that’s the one of the most tricky things to get down. Probably just practice makes perfect
@@j.prt.979 I mean...yeah it is when even he struggles sometimes with that.
But I mean like which Tools and Methods do you use.
My first idea was to just make a small spreadsheet (probably virtual) with 5 cells for each three enemies.
When it comes to tracking, I think J. Prt. said it. Practice makes perfect. It's a lot more difficult to track under a timed setting, but being able to practice it beforehand helps a lot. I don't use pencil and paper or anything like that as you can't do that in a physical tournament.
Good job on the game, I think you got pretty luckly to snag the victory from behind. However, I think you had a pretty rough game, getting blocked and 7'd out really put you behind early.
I totally agree. There were some moments I thought I was so far behind I couldn't catch up, but getting both the titles at the minimum commitment was what sealed the deal!
Wait a minute, on the 2nd settlement laydown at start of game, you're allowed to place on a shore? And grab a trade-ratio port?
