    Hey there, I just wanted to expound more on your point on why it's more painful in certain areas (from a nursing/medical POV)! Pain tends to be worse around bony prominences (knees, elbows, shoulders, ribs, fingers, etc.) because the nerves tend to lay closer to the bones and joint areas and where there isn't a lot of muscle and fat tissues, the nerves are more exposed and therefore more sensitive to pain than say the calf area or the front of the thigh.

    • @JamesWithee
      @JamesWithee  6 лет назад +462

      wow that makes total sense. thanks for helping to clarify the reason for that phenomenon. i'm going to alter the way i explain it from now on

    • @sammanthat
      @sammanthat 6 лет назад +98

      yeah! no problem. I mean we have nerves everywhere, even in the layers of our skin, but the bigger more major nerves are deeper towards the bone. So when there's no "cushioning" it just hurts like a mother XD

    • @markgueren9633
      @markgueren9633 6 лет назад +40

      That's funny....my experience is opposite....fatty areas I've had done seemed worse....my elbows and collar bone we're not bad at all...

    • @sobersaber494
      @sobersaber494 6 лет назад +18

      can agree. I had a shoulder tattoo and everything was merely cat scratches until the artist went closer to my collarbone. Could feel the needle hammering the bone with newfound face-twisting pain mixed with cat scratches.

    • @sammanthat
      @sammanthat 6 лет назад +25

      How interesting! I personally don't know why that is, but pain for everyone is different. So if it's the opposite for you, then that's how your nerves perceive the pain. There is also something to be said that we have nerves of all sizes everywhere (up close to the skin where our hair follicles are all the way down to the bone), and that may also be between muscles. For example, there is a really big nerve the goes from the groin area down across the butt muscles and into the legs (sciatic nerve) that can make the butt a very painful area to be tattooed.

The one thing I'd add is that some kind of physical distraction - gum, or a stress ball - can be a huge help. If you're unsure about your first tattoo on account of the pain, don't sweat it, it's really not that bad. I'm a world-class wuss, so if I can do it anyone can.

      @Hugo Amezcua Some of it will be painful, some won't. I found my inner bicep to be the sorest tattoo I've had so far. For me it's less about the location and more about the design - tattoos that need areas to be reworked several times are much more uncomfortable than line work or script where it's done in one pass. But we're all different. Anyway, it's all manageable. Prep right and you'll be fine.

    If fear of the pain is the only thing keeping you from getting a tattoo, just go for it! I was terrified and put it off for like 10 years, but finally went and got it done, and I actually ended up ENJOYING the way the needle felt. It was like stress relief. When he said it feels like someone scratching you with a needle, that is 100% accurate. There is a tiny bit of a warm/burning sensation that goes along with it, but it's totally manageable. I got mine on the outside of my forearm down near my wrist, was in the chair for about an hour, and I'd say the pain level was about a 2/10. There was one spot where it jumped to about a 3.5, but that was when she was going over the same exact spot for about 30 seconds. The pain is addicting. I can't wait to get more!

    Just got my first tattoo last week (inner bicep), and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. My artist is so talented and so chill; we were talking throughout the first hour of my 2-hour session.
    I was shocked at how much less painful it was than I was expecting. I was super comfortable for the first hour and 40 minutes- of course there was some pain, but at the worst moments, I’d probably describe it as scratching a 3-day-old sunburn.
    The final 20 minutes or so, I started to get sleepy (I was lying down, I think my brain was just getting impatient) and thirsty, and I started to feel the pain a bit more as she went back to touch up a few spots with shading.
    But overall, seriously totally tolerable. Dare I say enjoyable. Don’t let worries about the pain deter you!
    Also, great advice about prepping for the big day. I made sure to sleep well, stay hydrated, and eat two good meals leading up to my evening appointment; I think that definitely helped!

    Getting a tattoo feels like a needle being dragged across a light sunburn along with vibration. But like he said it’s like you know in your mind that it doesn’t necessarily feel good but it doesn’t hurt enough to where it causes an actual reaction you just sit there and deal with it. In my opinion it’s so worth it after it’s done. I agree with everything he said he described getting a tattoo perfectly.

    I have 12 tattoos, 4 big pieces, and for me I will never take a break during my sessions I’ve found that if I take a break my skin/ body thinks the pain is over so it settles down then when the needles hit again the pain is amplified, that’s just for me though

      I plan my tats so I never sit longer than an hour a day. I have anxiety when sitting still in general.

    • @AM-gv9db
      @AM-gv9db 5 лет назад +61

      I agree about the breaks. I always try to avoid them as much as possible because coming back after a break is the worst part. But when I do a large piece I don't have much choice. If we're going to sit for 8 hours then I have to accept that the artist will want a lunch break about halfway through. It might be painful and hard for me as the client, but the artist has to concentrate and work for several hours straight and it takes a toll on them as well. So having a lunch break is necessary to keep their spirit up and make sure they can do the best job possible. I'd rather deal with the post-break pain than end up with a bad tattoo because the artist couldn't keep their concentration up.

      I’ll never sit for longer than 4-5 hours. My pain tolerance can only go so far and I won’t push myself if I can’t handle it. Both myself and my tattooist are fine with booking another session to finish things off. My longest tattoo was 4.5 hours on my entire forearm from elbow to wrist. Almost gave up toward the end; felt like my arm was gonna fall off from the shading 😂

    Always hydrate!! Hydrate! Hydrate! Start hydrating days before, and during the session. Your body has better blood, and no caffeine or very little because it is dehydrating and can cause hypersensitivity. Finally you must breathe. If you need to put in headphones and listen to meditation tapes or something. Holding one’s breath decreases blood flow, so when you do breath blood rushes to the painful area and makes the whole thing hurt so much worse.

    With my tattoo artist he has a mini fridge full of free water and he suggests to get a bottle just to stay hydrated. He also asks if I'm ok and if we need to take breaks even though I don't move or flinch (I have half a sleeve and both hands done). But, artists are looking out for you and they understand if it hurts or if you need to take a breather.

    UPDATE!!: I got my first tattoo yesterday on my *rib cage* of a medium sized sun and moon face. It was not bad at all! Pain was literally 6 or 7/10 depending on the spot and if my artist was shading. The most annoying part was breathing because I had to control my breathing as she was on the ribs and the vibration! My tattoo artist was also very pleasant and gentle so I’m not sure if that helped. But I LOVE IT!

    I wasn’t there when my mom got her tattoo, and it wasn’t anything extreme (it was a couple of cursive lines on her wrist), but according to the artist, she sat stone still, and he was really impressed with how well she took it for a relatively older newbie.
    Considering she has given birth to two kids, you statement about “moms can take it” holds a lot of water!

    When I get into the 4 hr mark and I'm ready to pull my hair out I always try and think "okay chill out you're hurting like hell right now but it's going to be beautiful afterwards and so worth it" and that usually helps me calm down a little. Just thinking about how happy I will be once it's over with and I have a piece of art forever

    In my experience another big factor in tattoo pain is the technique of the artist. I've had some artists that were very heavy-handed and some are much more delicate naturally (no idea if this can have anything to do with certain machines or needles, would be interesting to know!). I've had an artist do shading on certain areas with a smooth gradient that required them to go over and over and over the same spot forever... and then there's tattoos with dot work shading that are a walk in the park. I've even had a tebori style tattoo done (traditional Japanese handpoke) which was ok in the beginning but because it takes so long to cover a small area it got reaaally sore towards the end. I've had numbing cream used once and wouldn't do it again tbh. He had to reapply during the process because the effects wear off over time, which means the pain comes back gradually. Every time the pain was coming back it felt worse - I'd rather just have normal pain levels in stead of a roller coaster of pain vs. less pain lol.

    For me it was more like a pinching feeling or a nip,
    It does get tender at some points but its not like that the entire tattoo.
    I got anxious about my first tattoo and turns out it barely hurt I was smiling the whole time just watching it.
    P.S. Careful when you stand up after the tattoo, no joke it was like I was walking on a slanted ship, drop in blood sugar so I'd recommend bringing something sugary or coke or something.
    The tattoo gets super itchy and aftercare is very important so take note to get some unscented healing ointment and moisturiser (also unscented), wash with unscented soap too, if your tattoo artist tells you to leave a wrap off of the tattoo after taking it off and let it air out do that, if another tells you to cover it do that, it can vary on size, position etc. Trust the artist, don't just go off what someone else did.

    My short answer for this: It feels pretty much how you think it would feel. It's not that bad, you're not gonna feel anything unexpected.. but of course it feels like it sounds.. a fucking needle being dragged across your skin. But you'll calm down after a few seconds and it will be pretty cool and exciting

    Actually the best moment in tattoo is when tattoo artist stops tattoing you for a couple of seconds. Such a relief! Especially when you're in real bad pain!
    It really hurts when needle touches any nerves. That's why my smallest tattoo on the inner arm, that took like 15 minutes, was yet the most painful one. Even almost 2 hour tattoo session on shoulder/biceps wasn't so bad

    I've never been scratched by a cat so I can't compare it to that. However, I personally think the tattoo needles create a sort of scratching, stinging and burning feeling. The pain was oddly calming, even though I made faces and got a really intense adrenaline kick.
    Also, I used to have a really bad needle/syringe phobia. It's better now, partly thanks to my tattoos and piercings. Syringes still make me very uncomfortable and panicky, but I don't react to tattoo needles at all. Piercings are a little more uncomfortable but I can still handle it just fine. So for anyone out there that has a needle phobia and considers getting a tattoo, but are afraid - don't worry. It's not at all the same. You can do it!

      One thing.
      Your point about the time line being a factor, and you mention the skin being irritated or agitated being a reason. Totally agree.
      But I would add that there is a difference in pain when being tattooed by a liner or a shader. When it's 5 hours in, and your skin is healing from its open wound, and your tattoo artist is adding shading for the 20th time on the same spot, my blood stopped dripping, rather it was oozing out....
      The pain 😱

    This video initially psyched me out before my first tattoo. But once my artist put the stencil on, I looked in the mirror and was so stoked about how it looked it didn't even bother me. I think that plays a big part. The piece was a steam train with my son's name on it. He has a passion for trains and just knowing how happy he would be to see it was well worth the slight discomfort. Honestly the itchiness during healing was worse than the actual tattoo. Good video, and thanks for the insight.
