Funny thing, I've been getting tatted for about 25 years. I cannot remember anyone ever giving me any of this advice (eating a good meal, getting enough sleep, etc.). Through the years, I pretty much figured out some do's and don't's, just by trial and error. I appreciate the fact that you're advising people who may not know! What a great upload dude!!!
I had my first tattoo, which is the start of a sleeve, two weeks ago and I didn't really bring anything with me other than headphones and a chocolate bar. I ate a huge breakfast an hour before my appointment and really I was full for the entire tattoo. I went into the tattoo not knowing what my pain tolerance was and the tattoo was from my elbow to the top of my shoulder. Honestly it was no where near as bad as I thought it was going to be. The only painful part was close to the armpit. I never needed my chocolate bar or my headphones. I kinda just sat there, talked with the artist a few times and mostly watched the other artist that did three tattoos that day. The day just flew by even without any entertainment (I only checked my phone when we took a break). My artist ended up saying that was the best anyone has sat for their first tattoo in 10 years for her, so that was pretty cool.
that area of the body is one of the easiest places get tattooed, but even then it's hard to sit for an all day session. you'll prolly end up being heavily tattooed lol this is how it starts
I just got my first one 4/21/2024 and I was able to sit there and just listen to music and stayed relaxed and I actually kinda liked how it felt the artist and my mom thought I was fucking crazy and also thought it was pretty funny too and we only had to take 1 small break for me to go to the restroom and he got it done pretty fast and it goes from the beginning of my right shoulder and just before my elbow
@@JamesWithee well it's not even about how you look but rather about how you act. Those guys see how confident you are and how much you know about tattooing so they just start panicking and thinking they look lame just sitting around saying nothing.
I'm so glad I have a great tattoo artist. He knows I can't sit long due to my bone cancer that I fought for 3 years. I told him my story and he took me in like a long lost family member. He keeps my appt times small in 3 hr range. I also had to wait a year after my chemo treatments and other things. He also let's me get up because he knows my bones are still healing and I can't sit long. I can lay down for a longer period but be knows I've had a partial hip replacement from the cancer so I can only lay one way. He's the freaking best but I also pay him more because of the time. He of course never asked but anyone willing to give me my sleeve and jump through every hoop to make that dream come true will get as much over as I can afford.
Getting my first done at age 44/45 next Wednesday. Your videos have somewhat calmed my anxiety lol. I say somewhat because it is not easy at all to put me at ease lol. Thank you so much!
The entertainment factor is where I can struggle sometimes. Don't want to be rude to the artist by not talking or joking around with them but when getting work done I like to get my headphones in and get into my zone. It's nothing against the artist just my way of getting myself comfortable.
Ryan nothing wrong with that. Being able to listen to loud music in your headphones probably helps with the pain too. A couple of people have asked me if they can wear headphones. I don’t take it personally and mostly assume that they are either in pain and can’t talk at the same time or don’t like hip hop, which is mostly what I have playing when I work
this is the same for me! getting my first tomorrow and listening to music has always helped with feeling ill as I usually get very carsick without it, hopefully it helps me out a bit haha
Oh how I wish all clients were like you guys.. it's,so off off putting and distracting when clients keep talking, especially if they're someone who talks with their hands (hand movement expression alongside speach).. I had a guy the other day where I kept stating how important it was that he remain still, especially when I'm trying to execute straight clean lines.. he managed about a minute, at best.. Some people talk out of nervousness I find.. it doesn't matter how much you try to set a relaxing atmosphere.. it's a deeper issue than ambient music But.. all in all what a fantastic job we tattooists have hey.. I think talking to your client is an great way to keep there mind of the pain. The crazier the story seemed to work for me but your right bringing head phones and music plus an charger is good incase the artist is having an bad day and just dosen't want to talk much.
It's so interesting to hear the experiences of tattoo artists. The artist who did my second tattoo has a hardcore "no friends/other people" policy due to some of the issues you mentioned. I completely get that - when I get a new piece, I want my artist to be as comfortable and happy as possible so we're both pleased with the result.
alleycatfire yah some artists are definitely more strict on it than others. There are a lot of reasons we don’t prefer a lot of company besides what I mentioned in the video. It can become a circus real quick if there are several friends accompanying the client
@@JamesWithee It's weird because my tattoo artist seems to enjoy having company while working - me on the other hand, I absolutely *hate* it when I'm expected to talk while being tattooed. its more important that the tattoo artist is more comfortable than the client in my opinion only for the reason that you are going to be uncomfortable anyways, but he is the one putting this on your skin, for him to do his job effectively, he needs to be in a good mindset as well if not more!
Those 31 minutes went by so quickly! I normally put RUclips videos on in the background while I'm doing something else but I was fixated the entire time. This is extremely helpful, especially for someone like myself who's never been through the process of getting tattooed before but is planning on it shortly. Appreciate the content!
Nothing more relieving and satisfying than watching this video and seeing you suggest, Dial Gold, Aquaphor, and unscented Lubriderm. All of which i've used during the healing of all my tattoos. They've all healed perfectly.
I brought a nalgene water bottle to my first tattoo session, but when I got there I realized I was gonna be tattooed laying down on my stomach. Luckily my friend who accompanied me had a water bottle ready for me that I could drink from while laying down (like a hamster...lol). It's good to bring a friend who is tattooed and can think of the little things that can make your experience better.
Lol nice, u brought the right friend that time. It’s easy to overlook that sort of detail as the client. Sometimes what u picture for positioning is different from what the tattooer decides to do
i literally just had my first tattoo on my back and I’m 18 I don’t regret it all but I just came from your other video of “things to think about before getting your first tattoo” I don’t regret it at all I love it sm,pain wise it didn’t hurt lmao but now I want another one your video’s always help me in so many ways
Homeostasis!! My Tattoo artist told me not to hold it when I had to pee it was making it hurt more. OMG that was the best advice, I didn't want to bother her when she might be almost done but totally ask for a potty break.
Oh man, thank you for mentioning the vasovagal response! I have vasovagal syncope that is primarily triggered by stress so I’ve been watching these videos to reduce any anxiety since I have my first tattoo in a few days on my bicep (it’s a larger piece). But these tips are great!
Glad you're back man! I like to do a lot of research so I already knew most of these things but it's nice to have them all compiled within one clean video. Keep up the great work
thank you! yeah i took a long haitus. got spread a little too thin with other shit i was doing and needed a break from doing yt. i think i'll be uploading regularly again tho. thx for sticking with me
Thank you for this! I have my first 8 hour session in a week. I want to be as prepared as possible. My goal going into an appointment is always to be the best client possible for my artist.
Rebecca Watson you’re welcome! That’s a good attitude to have. It goes both ways so hopefully your artist has the same mentality. Both parties should be prioritizing the quality of the piece above all else
I’m not sure how common it is but Im the past I’ve used a sports mouth piece to bite down on when I get my ribs tattooed. Never tired a stress ball or something similar, that sounds like a great idea. Thank you very very much for the content. Thank you.
love these tat videos, I personally have no need of them as i asked my first artist for tips before and he was great, i always make sure my artist is a "chatterbox" I hate watching movies or just listening to music, talking to your artist them 6-8 hours fly by!
I'm glad you brought up shaving beforehand. I had planned to do that, but now I'll definitely bring it up to my artist during our final pre-appointment consult.
Watching this, I just realized that I managed to get my first tattoo (basically my entire forearm) at a reputable, professional shop without showing any form of ID. I did go with my buddy that has gotten all of his work including two full sleeves there, so I'm guessing that's the only reason he was relaxed about it.
I dont recommend carb heavy meals, you will crash and then get hungrier from the insulin spike rebound. (Btw, sugar is a carbohydrate). A better way to stay full would be something high in protein, fat, and fiber. So for example, a big steak, plenty of cooked vegetables, and maybe some whole grains like some quinoa or blue corn. Thanks for the video btw, good tips for getting tattooed
i think james has a very different personality irl than in his videos because he said he’s extroverted but he seems really quiet spoken and wanna stay to himself type thing on camera
Jared Hummel u are correct sir I’m kind of an obnoxious piece of shit irl. But in a good way. I think. I try to keep the videos about the information rather than my personality
This video reminded me I need to call my bank and have them increase my daily withdrawal limit. Tried to take out enough money for my session the day of but it would only let me do $300 per day. I drove so fast to the nearest Walmart and bought 3 candy bars one at a time to use the cash back option. I was stressed out lol
This may be to late, but I have heard of some people falling asleep during tattoos. I was just wondering if you have experienced this, and if so was it easier or harder to tattoo?
Just finished my first tattoo! 7 hours of ink to skin and being completely honest my artist said I sat amazing and I will say the pain wasn’t as bad as I thought. A couple areas will suck but if you manage and think about how awesome it’s gonna look you’ll be fine.
One thing I wish was more common was the transparency in prices and time for different tattoos. Instagram is great for finding artists, but I wish I knew how much each piece costs and/or how long it took. I hate reaching out to artists and not knowing the price ahead of time. Idk maybe it’s just me, but even if I have money I would like to know so I don’t waste my and the artist’s time.
i understand your frustration. to message an artist and have no idea if you can even afford to get tattooed by them is a waste of time for both of you if the rate isn't right. it's hard to say how much someone charges just from their ig cuz there are so many factors at play. i have a whole video about how an individual artist determines his/her price. check that one out and it'll prolly help, in combination with your experience after inquiring with several artists of differing skill levels in your area.
i know something i usually do when i go is ill buy a like 2 bottles of soda or something for the session ( i don't usually drink soda often) but it helps with blood sugar and stuff, anxiety and pain can drain blood sugar pretty quick leading to more anxiety and pain/ possibly passing out. it's just a simple think that can make a world of difference if you think you may have issues with pain or something.
My artist who I go to for all my black and gray tattoos brought me lunch on a few occasions. I thought that was pretty awesome of him. Took like a 30 min break to eat and right back at it. That’s customer service lol
This may also be a no-brainer, but I'd also recommend wearing breathable clothes depending on the area of your tattoo e.g. don't wear jeans if you're getting a one on your legs. Just clothing that won't irritate or suffocate the skin.
I just pop a benzo and crash out. Got a half sleeve done in two 7 hour sessions and the artist was saying he was going to wake me up but I didn't move an inch for 5 hours so he left me be.
I am getting a tattoo in a month and am so so glad I found this channel. All your videos are full of information and you offer it in a clear and concise manner. Thank you very much 😊!
At around the 23 minute mark: my most current artist free hands everything so we decide together what would look good while he sets his station up and I actually like it better that way. We have a dialogue about it and we must be on the same mind wavelength because our ideas always line up so perfectly. Then he pulls out some reference art books (I’m doing a nature “life comes from death” sleeve on my right arm and he is using native WA state plants / flowers for it) and goes to town with sharpies on my arm (he is like an insanely talented tattoo wizard). I’m pretty sure I’m going to be sticking with him for a while because I really do enjoy being involved in the design process and I’ve never had an artist free hand anything on me. He’s also the owner of the shop I go to so we have a private office away from the hustle and bustle of the shop so yeah. Very relaxing to be tattooed by him. I am sticking with him for a while.
I was supposed to get my first tattoo December 2nd, but my artist has rescheduled on me twice now. My new date is January 3rd , hoping he doesn't cancel again because if he does I want my deposit back so I can go somewhere else. That being said, I have had extra time to watch your videos to know what to expect before and after a tattoo and feel like I am well prepared, thanks!
Dirty Gig it’s actually black paper backdrop with a purple light shining on it. I built a home studio at my house during my 5 month hiatus. Filming here is much easier than at my shop
I'm happy I found this video. I have a full day session on Monday and it's been a few years since I've been tattooed. It's nice to have a refresher list for prep. Love your professional approach to the vid.
I've been watching all of your videos. Your channel is the only one I care to receive notifications from (for when you return). Great videos, they are very helpful! I'm starting my 4th and 5th tattoo this month.
Vanessa Esp-Isi thanks venessa. Glad the videos are helpful. I’ll get back on em soon. Honestly I think about it a lot and feel guilty for not keeping up with it as much as I should. It’s just really time consuming pumping them out every week without an editor. I’ll come back tho. I appreciate your support!
@@JamesWithee Oh absolutely! They are time consuming but we'll be waiting. You not only have a gift for tattoos (based on your portfolio) but you also make amazing educational content. I'm glad I found your videos. They have coached me throughout my tattoo appointments. Hands down you are SPOT ON when it comes to experiences! My personal favorite is prioritizing artists over a shop! If you just knew what happened to me LOL!!!
Good information. Especially with the identification, ive worked at a couple shops and u would be surprised at the amount of potential customers that came through and after going through the process and then they dont have i.d and hes right about licensed shops having to send business away because of that, i seen people put all cash on counter , like thousands, and still get denied over i.d
Great tips. Really resonated with my approach of last Friday. Ate a plate of fried rice in the morning and later some whole wheat pancakes and the tattoo session was a breeze 😁
Getting more ink on April 2, so it's good to have this fresh in my mind. If I ever have the money, I'm seeking you out, it's a dream of mine to get art by you!
I just got a new piece four days ago but I can't skip out on any video that you post! I always learn something new and just admire how smart and professional of a dude you are lol. Thanks for sharing! Hope to book with you one day when I take a trip to AZ.
KWEENOA thanks! Sounds good. Just email a few months before your trip if you’re ever heading out this way. I do a lot of conventions too so maybe at one of those
I'm getting a tattoo by the end of the year sometime so I'm super happy to have this advice lol I never would have considered quite a bit of this stuff
bassguitar1919 Unfortunately, my first session was postponed because of the quarantine that is happening right now so I am still waiting to get my tattoo. I decided to go big and get a sleeve on my right arm. The entire theme of my tattoo is The Day of Dead, in color and the style I chose was traditional. Since I haven’t gotten my tattoo yet all I can say is take your time and look at different artists and find someone that does your style. A tattoo is a piece of art so be willing to pay a little more for it. Good luck.
The new ink looks good man! Another solid video. I really enjoy watching these because of how true the info is. In general I believe people shouldn't overthink it too much, but it's always smart to be prepared.
Amazing tips brotha. Just had an appointment yesterday and went in on no food that day. Was only 3 hours but didn't think much of it. Also, cool point about shaving. I shaved for mine in consideration for the Artist but I used a buzzer so I pretty much just took a majority of the hair off so it's not so nasty for them lol
Great advice to review before any session. No matter how used to being tattooed one is, preparing appropriately is important. I appreciate your time and honesty. Wake care, be well, and many blessings. 👩🎨🎨🖌🌺🍀🦓🌈 Liz in CA
You're so right! Always good to get those reminders! I'm heavily tattooed and it's easy to get kinda lazy about preparing. I have had a few surprises though 😂 My thigh caught me all the way off guard. You just never really know when your soul will try to leave your body so it's best to be rested up and have a full stomach 😂
James, great job on this channel being a compass for tattoo fans/customers. Keep up the good work Holmes. If you ever get down to FL let me know so I can support with a tattoo. Apparently we are not a good place to be at the moment 😕
Can you put out a video on tipping price rages and price of tattoos for an example, bc of your tattoo was a good experience and you want to tip can you put out like how much you should or something like that.
Matt Kruze I think I might’ve covered that in my video about tipping. Most ppl do like 10-20%. Doing a video that shows tattoos and estimates their value might be a good one though
All the artists I've ever worked with have always said to shave beforehand, and even one of my artists said they charge shaving time as tattooing time. Im surprised to hear the opposite
Just got my first tattoo 2 days ago, it was in the chest (2 hour session) and hearing all this makes me realized I was not prepare at all. On my next one I will be prepare.
So I don’t have a whole lot of hair on my arms but what about using an electric shaver on my arm just to take down most of the long hair and letting the tattoo artist shave with the razor?
Man in 2005 I got my first tattoo across my stomach. I basically walked into a tattoo shop no prep time or any eating and got it. I won’t lie I was miserable lol
Hey I was wondering if you could do a video on touching up tattoos. Like making aged tattoos new again. Since I know all tattoos get a little or a lot blurry over a long period of time, I wanted to know the different outcomes of going back and getting it touched up. If you have had experience with that or generally know of it. It doesn’t have to be an entire video on it because I don’t know how much you could possibly go over. I’m into really detailed and realistic tattoos and I wanna know for the long run is it worth it if there’s a chance to “make it new” again.
Funny thing, I've been getting tatted for about 25 years. I cannot remember anyone ever giving me any of this advice (eating a good meal, getting enough sleep, etc.). thank you! yeah i took a long haitus. got spread a little too thin with other shit i was doing and needed a break from doing yt. i think i'll be uploading regularly again tho. thx for sticking with me
Thank you for this!
I'm getting my first tattoo next week. This video definitely came in handy. Actually a lot of your videos have helped.
It's great to have all of this information in one video. Thank you so much!
I'm glad you brought up shaving beforehand. I had planned to do that, but now I'll definitely bring it up to my artist during our final pre-appointment consult.
I got my Tattoo bookbag with me always. Neck pillow, ear buds, water, snacks and movies downloaded on phone. I even bring my own Saniderm.
Watching this, I just realized that I managed to get my first tattoo (basically my entire forearm) at a reputable, professional shop without showing any form of ID. I did go with my buddy that has gotten all of his work including two full sleeves there, so I'm guessing that's the only reason he was relaxed about it.
Digitalizing yah that might be why. Some tattooers are lax about it but they’re few and far between. Prolly depends on your region too
Bananas and Gatorade are my go-to snacks while in the middle of a session 😂😂
Also a sleep eye cover helps alot since light sometimes can be bothering or relaxing is easier with the eye cover
That’s a really great tip sometimes the lights are bright af when getting tattooed
This is some perfect timing. I’m getting a tattoo on Friday
McGturtle3 lmao damn that’s unfortunate. 300 a day is super low, where I’m from I think it’s 500
James Withee true unless you’re Wells Fargo like I am and it took forever to up my daily limit!
This may be to late, but I have heard of some people falling asleep during tattoos. I was just wondering if you have experienced this, and if so was it easier or harder to tattoo?
Getting my first tattoo tomorrow 3-4 hour session can’t wait😁
Just finished my first tattoo! 7 hours of ink to skin and being completely honest my artist said I sat amazing and I will say the pain wasn’t as bad as I thought. A couple areas will suck but if you manage and think about how awesome it’s gonna look you’ll be fine.
got my first ever tattoo appointment scheduled in 2 days. really helpful video! wish me luck!
James Withee thanks for the reply James! I will go check that video out. Thanks for always putting out great content 👍🏽
Your videos are so informative and extremely helpful. Thank you!
i know something i usually do when i go is ill buy a like 2 bottles of soda or something for the session ( i don't usually drink soda often) but it helps with blood sugar and stuff, anxiety and pain can drain blood sugar pretty quick leading to more anxiety and pain/ possibly passing out. it's just a simple think that can make a world of difference if you think you may have issues with pain or something.
Extremely thorough video. Things I already knew that was good to hear as well as a couple new tips. Thank you sir
Tattoo in 2 days, cant wait! Been waiting since last April. I'm taking my asthma inhaler in. First tattoo so I might need it,tissues ,sweets, water.
I miss your videos because RUclips doesn't recommend them but I'm glad I remembered to check your channel today.
I do today my 2. Tattoo after 13 years. Thanks for the this video
Watching all these videos is making me feel far more comfortable for my upcoming tattoos
I am getting a tattoo in a month and am so so glad I found this channel. All your videos are full of information and you offer it in a clear and concise manner. Thank you very much 😊!
you're welcome, thanks for watching / subscribing!
I read this quickly as "I am getting a tattoo in my mouth" 😅😅 How did your tattoo go??
I appreciate your content and straight-forward delivery. Keep creating. Your videos are helpful.
I love your channel! I have a tattoo appointment on 12/1/2022 with my friend Colleen whose getting her 1st tattoo at 70!❤❤❤❤
At around the 23 minute mark: my most current artist free hands everything so we decide together what would look good while he sets his station up and I actually like it better that way.
That being said, I have had extra time to watch your videos to know what to expect before and after a tattoo and feel like I am well prepared, thanks!
the green screen~ excited for the future of this channel, thank you for all the knowledge you give!
I’m getting tattooed on the neck tomorrow so i’m just trying to limit the pain i feel tomorrow
I love your new tatt! I love your hair too! Random, but you're gorgeous! Lol I'm so happy my artist is able to work again! Yay!
This video came at the perfect time! It is very helpful, I have an 8 hour session today. 1st session of my sleeve✌
Mike C. Hell ya good luck buddy
Your videos are the best, im always lookin foward to these clips. Good stuff brother
So glad I found this video. Planning my first tattoo and gonna make it a half sleeve. This will really help. Thanks for making this man.
Perfect timing! Just made an appointment to get my first tattoo.
Hey Alan, how did it go? What did you get? Healing up well? Thanks! Considering getting my first tatt.
bassguitar1919 Unfortunately, my first session was postponed because of the quarantine that is happening right now so I am still waiting to get my tattoo. Good luck.
@@alanresendizdelacruz267 thanks for the reply. That sounds like a really cool design! Best of luck with it.
This was awesome advice, thank you very much for creating this video.
I’m getting my first tat tomorrow and this video helped so much! Thank you
Can you post a link or a vid of what a baso/faso (or whatever you said) response is plz bro?
The new ink looks good man! Another solid video. I really enjoy watching these because of how true the info is. In general I believe people shouldn't overthink it too much, but it's always smart to be prepared.
I'm getting my first tattoo on my birthday turning 18 years old wish me luck
Me too! I have it scheduled for the day after my birthday. One more month!!!
Jay Ali same here!! next month for me :)
Jay Ali Happpy Birthday bro where you getting it at
@@houseofmatrix6174 Thanks bro really appreciate it and I'm getting my grandma name on my forearm
Jay Ali that’s dope to pay Decidation to your Grandma , also respecting your elders
Thanks for these tips! Some helpful reminders. Good plan to get all the lotions beforehand!
Great advice to review before any session. No matter how used to being tattooed one is, preparing appropriately is important. I appreciate your time and honesty. Wake care, be well, and many blessings.

Same with az lol everybody thinks bodies are dropping like crazy over here even though it’s pretty normal as far as I can tell. Thanks for watching!
My go to is my sister on my person it definitely helps shes also a client of my artist
Just booked 2 tattoos @ SohoInk with Michela Bottin ! I'm very excited .
Booked in for my 4th on Friday, thanks for the tips. I will try these tips and see if it helps!
I've never heard of the tips for payment like the cash or the credit card issues for traveling. Thank you!
Extremely helpful, thanks brother.
All the artists I've ever worked with have always said to shave beforehand, and even one of my artists said they charge shaving time as tattooing time. Im surprised to hear the opposite
Great video. I appreciate how comprehensive it was. Thanks James.
Thanks for all the help!
this was a very informative video keep it up!!!!! i’m getting a sleeve tattoo for my second tattoo and this gave me a lot of great advice so thank you
Just got my first tattoo 2 days ago, it was in the chest (2 hour session) and hearing all this makes me realized I was not prepare at all. On my next one I will be prepare.
So I don’t have a whole lot of hair on my arms but what about using an electric shaver on my arm just to take down most of the long hair and letting the tattoo artist shave with the razor?
I have an appointment this week, thanks for putting this out!
MAKE SURE YOU EAT SOMETHING!
blazebaby89 most important thing imo
And drink, I had a guy pass out next to me 2 weeks ago, the tattoo place didn't even tell him to eat or drink before the tattoo
@@BRITdave-so1sl they shouldn't have to tell him, it's common sense. Research if you're unsure etc.
