In my opinion ive found it completely pointless for women to train bjj for self defense. Its one thing to train as sport but for self defense it is pointless. Ive seen countless times in the gym training females just not being able to compete with the men. Blue belts tapping brown or even black belt females.

Jiu Jitsu had a bad reputation in Brazil in the 90's because a lot of "bad boys" used to train just to bully people on the streets. So I was kinda scared to step in a Jiu Jitsu gym for the first time, but when I finally gathered courage to join, I found the most friendly and helpful people that I ever met. For me it was a life changing experience.

If anything, I actually feel like other women have been more rude to me in BJJ than the men have. One of them even says “oh I’ll roll with you, don’t worry I’ll go easy”. Meanwhile I’m submitting other people who have equal experience, so I don’t know why she feels the need to act that way. Men who are definitely better/stronger never make rude comments about my strength/skill like that. Anyways, just be respectful to everyone!
And great advice about the period, I’ve been struggling with that.

for people who only use pads (myself included) i really recommend getting a pair of tight compression shorts, and wearing like a long pad. The shorts really keep the pad in place and keep it from moving, and a long pad will make sure blood doesn’t seep to the back of your underwear

Great content. As a dad of young girls that train, I’m hopeful that they keep training and find solace in an online woman’s community of BJJ players so they have their own space.
And the other side of things is that BJJ experiences can vary radically from gym to gym because each place has its own culture. Some places are survival of the fittest and some are very welcoming. I think you should find a place that is very welcoming and watches out for you. Sometimes it makes sense for a coach to dictate who you train with early on since you might not have the confidence to speak up in such a hierarchical community.

I haven't rolled in about a decade due to a bad back, but I remember being way more nervous and awkward about rolling with a hot girl in class back in the day than she was about rolling with me even though I probably had 80 lbs on her.
To me, there is NOTHING worse than a girl thinking you are creepy or a girl getting bad vibes from you and having to give "the look" to a friend to come "save" her from you.
But here's the thing and I hope it helps to alleviate the stress of other guys afraid of offending women here, she didn't mind or think anything bad about my intensions or thoughts at all!
I remember I got her into Mount due to my strength advantage wish I also felt bad about by the way, and she immediately pulled both of my hands in onto her chest so I couldn't isolating the arm for an arm bar or a key lock/Americana, but I didn't want her to think I was creepy for having both of my hands on her chest! I've seen lots of Jiu Jutsu matches between different women here on YT, and there can certainly be issues with hair grabbing as well as ponytails getting in the way as a hazard. Also, I think a woman who is 120 lbs should train with guys who are below 180 lbs if another woman is unavailable as a training partner. I saw a video where a 130 lb woman trained with a 165 lb man, and she looked like she was the only female in her Jiu Jutsu gym, but she practised with practically every guy in the gym who brought something different, like another style or a different technique.
It's also a good way to form bonds and friendships with other members in the sport, whether it's during training sessions or live competitions. Like almost every sport, some rivalries do form and that's where the "we must kill each other" mentality can come in, but for most competitors, it's all about wanting to compete with other people outside of their Jiu Jutsu circle, and pick up some pointers wherever they can with whoever they can roll with.

Guys in our gym that start to “smash” women don’t last the session if they are not stopped right away. Yet, I know some women that just jump in and attack. Personally, I just go into defense mode. But mostly you speak truth. BJJ is NOT EASY.

    @michaelnurge1652 Год назад +3

Two kinds of people that have the hardest time finding partners to roll with: guys my size, and others (usually women) who are the other end of the spectrum.
I should do a video about being the big guy when you're starting BJJ, but most people aren't, so I don't know how relevant it would be.
A couple days ago after class when there was rolling, two leftovers were me and this one girl. We didn't spar, just worked technique a bit. I don't think I would be comfortable doing anything else with someone I'm twice the size of, and even then I got talked to or I guess minorly warned...like I'm going to try something??? I'm reluctant to try some of the basic arm-bar positions just in case I step or fall on someone's head by accident, male or female...I mean, I do it because I want to learn and get fit, but there's no way I'm going to roll full-out with someone like that, and I'm not good enough yet to not go full-out.
I don't think I'm being patronizing in this attitude because it's almost the same as when I was working with this really small guy. He's a blue belt but a lot smaller than me, and so after he did some positions with him on top, we got another person I could work with I wouldn't crush by accident just doing the same stuff.
    __
After no-gi last Saturday, I rolled three times, all with one guy. He's about 6'2" and a little bit over 250#. I'm 6'4" and down to 310#. He's younger then I am and in better shape, also been doing BJJ a bit longer. He's a good guy, but some sessions it's like he's the only one I get to go rounds with.
I don't roll with anyone except the over 200 pounders unless they're at least blue belts, sometimes not even then. Walking to someone looking for a partner and they're smaller makes me feel like a bully, but they're ALL smaller. Even the guys as tall or taller than me are usually a lot lighter / skinnier. It's nice to work with more people, but that's an option you don't get so much at either end of the spectrum I think. The girls in the class usually roll with each other or occasionally smaller guys; otherwise it'd probably be just technique drills.
    __
Anyways, it's nice to see women doing stuff like that, and I don't know every gym, but my experience in the one I'm in now is pretty positive. There are very few women there, but the ones who are there stay there, so I think others are friendly and supportive too. Frankly, despite some frustrations I experience with myself not being able to do some stuff I used to or think I should or having a limited set of people that will work with me, I'm pretty amazed sometimes by how open and friendly we are, and it seems like this isn't unique but is actually widespread in BJJ because you hear that kind of thing over and over from most other gyms too.

My daughter will be 12 in a couple of months and her father decided to put her in classes. I was afraid this would make her more tomboyish, at first she hated it but the praise she gets seems to be motivating her. She struggles with self esteem and I want her to be more feminine but her mental health is more important. If the exercise can help her mood and self confidence I’ll be happy. Maybe as she gets older it will get rougher and she can try something else.

Putting your daughter - especially at the age of 12 - into a class like Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu is an excellent way for her to learn how to defend herself on a realistic basis. I personally wouldn't say it changes anything other than your mindset; once starting BJJ, your mind is trained to think before acting. Don't worry about a lesser feminine approach, nothing about your personality changes, and BJJ is great to get into! 🥳

6:43 most of the time, if a guy doesn’t roll with a girl it’s either a) he thinks she will feel weird rolling with a guy she doesn’t know (hence the problem goes away once you get to know each other)
    b) he’s probably just naturally awkward around girls
    c) he has some personal beliefs around “beating” women
I think it’s very rare that it’s because they think little of you as a woman and for options a and b above (and this might be unfair since the girl is in the minority) the easy solution is for the girl to ask/initiate the roll so the guy knows it’s ok and knows that she feels comfortable. I think most guys will avoid a girl if they get the slightest hint of discomfort from her because in their mind they don’t want to be “creepy”

In my humble opinion (coming up on 2 years training) I don't think you have anything to worry about. The culture of jiu jitsu promotes everyone being a good training partner to help each other improve at jiu jitsu. Anyone serious about showing up to train is there for that reason, not to flirt or date. It would be SUPER weird for anyone to try to exploit the physical proximity that happens during training to try to 'make something happen' with their training partner and I can't see it being reciprocated. Most likely it would get reported.

Blue belt with some MMA xp here, ya know rolling is not just awkward for women, as a guy I have felt plenty of hardons where they shouldnt be. A lot of guys start quivering with how weird it is to wrestle, but that goes away. I have rolled with women plenty of times, i never had a problem not being "excited" often it just seems like rolling another guy unless you get some obvious north south objects in your face or something, but usually women are aware of and avoid it. Once I was rolling with this one girl, yea she was cute but I wasnt thinking about it, I was thinking about a move and i slowly moved my hand to the next point when I realized I had just completely grabbed her boob instead. I jerked my hand away, it was a little awkward, but damn I am glad she understood I didnt mean it. It's more awkward rolling with women cause these days you never know if women are gonna freak out even when you dont mean it, but women have to understand, in BJJ its gonna happen. Getting hurt happens too, you have to anticipate and prepare for it.

Just wondering why you chose Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu vs Muay Thai? I personally think BJJ is useless when facing multiple attackers on the street. 80lbs women trying to take down and roll with 200lbs men just doesn't make sense

When I started BJJ I was lifting, and was 6"1 225lbs. I was getting repeatedly owned by a 5"3 110lbs woman. Of course, striking wasn't part of the game, but still it's a very impressive indicator of how BJJ technique and strategy works.
As women are more likely to find themselves on the ground when assaulted, I always suggest BJJ instead of a striking system.
As for multiple attackers... Muay Thai can work as long as you have the space to keep retreating and drawing them out into a line. If you have the space and time to do that, you're better off just turning and running. If you don't have space/time to do this, Muay Thai won't help you. Only a gun will.

There is NO martial art that is good against multiple attackers *period*.
I don't care what you think. Objectively speaking, you can only hit one person at a time, and the multiple attackers aren't as stupid as you think they are. (Even if they are indeed quite stupid)
They won't just let you line them up.
And the guy you're using as space between yourself and the other guy? Yeah, he can still move, and hit you, and try to take you down.
Even if all of the attackers have never trained or have garbage takedowns, you're going down if they want you to go down.
Especially if they're willing to take some punches and kicks to take you down.
Do you have a weapon? Depending on what it is, what range you're using it, and how many there are, it's their weapon now.
Does one of them have a weapon? It's going to be their weapon until they don't want or need it anymore.
Do multiple, if not ALL of them have weapons? You're dead(er) than a doorknob.
And you better hope to GOD you don't trip on a comedically placed banana peel, or something that causes you to no longer have the ability to keep at least one of them away from you.
Even one tiny, miniscule mistake will end all hope of making it out just bruised and battered.
The only thing that is good against multiple attackers is running away, or having multiple friends.
And then if those multiple friends know legit martial arts then you have a death squad.

It's not true at all. It depends all on your kind of discomfort and what your goal is. If your goal is competing, you don't need of opposite sex to be successful. A great friend of mine, a guy who does muay thai and doesn't train with women, is a high level competitor.
At my gym there are also women only classes and there we have a female purple belt who doesn't train with men. She is a very good athlete who obtained great success at competitions.
But most people are not competitors they are only hobbists who want to do a combat sport just for fun. Some of these people don't want to face discomfort, they only look for a hobby to have fun and forget their troubles for few hours with.
Live and let live. If you want to train with everyone, great! If you are uncomfortable and you want to try and overcome your discomfort great! If you are uncomfortable and you want to do only what make you comfortable, great too! It's your journey, do what you make you feel happy. Nobody should feel forced to do something against their will.

    • @judosailor610
      @judosailor610 5 месяцев назад

@@robb00 so, first of all, it is absolutely true and without doubt that in order to learn how to fight you have to overcome a lot of things that make you feel uncomfortable or that you're scared to do. From the first time you spar, to the first time you get punched in the face, to the first time you get submitted, to the first time you feel that incredible pressure and pain of someone doing knee on belly and you just want to give up because it's so uncomfortable. You have to learn how to overcome those things and be comfortable in those situations that used to make you uncomfortable. That's indisputable.
Now that said, I guess you're right, you can overcome all those other things and probably learn how to fight without ever rolling, sparring or training with someone of the opposite sex. However, in my opinion, that's still problematic. It may be natural to have that fear or to feel uncomfortable when you're new. And of course if you have some past trauma, that may also contribute to it. But you're doing your training partners and yourself a disservice if you never work through that and get past it and overcome it. At least that's my opinion.
