  • Melatonin has become a popular dietary supplement most known for helping establish healthy sleep. Research over the last decade into cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, fertility, PCOS, and many other conditions, combined with the COVID-19 pandemic, has led to greater awareness of melatonin because of its ability to act as a potent antioxidant, immune-active agent, and mitochondrial regulator. There are distinct similarities between melatonin and vitamin D in the depth and breadth of their impact on health. Both act as hormones, affect multiple systems through their immune-modulating, anti-inflammatory functions, are found in the skin, and are responsive to sunlight and darkness.
In this webinar, Dr. Deanna Minich will evaluate recent data on melatonin’s mechanisms, its clinical uses beyond sleep, safety concerns surrounding melatonin dosage, and provide a summary of therapeutic considerations concerning dietary supplementation, including the different formats, dosing, timing, and nutrient combinations. She will also discuss how to determine melatonin insufficiency and darkness deficiency from a clinical perspective.

This was a great presentation and full of valuable up-to-date information. 👏
Most people take it for granted that melatonin is easily produced in the body. If melatonin levels are low, in most cases, we have a sleep problem and either take a melatonin supplement or reasonably seek out why melatonin is low in that particular individual. However, understanding the pivotal role of stomach acid in melatonin production is key to appreciating the complexities of our body's sleep regulation. This should be discussed more and definitely considered by all health practitioners. However, this is rarely the case.
Sufficient stomach acid (gastric acid) is critical in the initial breakdown of long-chained protein peptides into smaller peptides during digestion. This process is initiated in the stomach and continues in the small intestine, where these smaller bonded protein peptides are further broken down into individual amino acids. These amino acids are the essential building blocks to synthesize crucial molecules, including neurotransmitters and hormones. Of particular significance is the conversion of tryptophan, an amino acid derived from our diet, into serotonin and, ultimately, into melatonin.
The journey from stomach acid to the small intestine and bloodstream highlights the interconnectedness of our digestive system and the complex steps necessary to produce melatonin, the sleep-inducing hormone. Maintaining optimal stomach acid levels ensures melatonin's timely and efficient synthesis for a healthy sleep cycle. 👍

This was an amazing webinar, and I rarely would say that. Well done.

This presentation was amazing you covered every topic that I had questions with previously.
I’m on the autism spectrum and can confirm that I’m more alert in the mornings and my stemming and procrastination has reduced significantly since taking melatonin. Sleep is still a work in progress but my initial experience is going perfect so far. Week two of melatonin supplementation and so far so good.
    My full autism spectrum stack:
    Vitamin D
    Magnesium
    Melatonin
    Sulforaphane
    Probiotics
    Vitamin B6/P5P
    For insulin resistance:
    Dandelion root and Berberine

Melatonin is a hormone and is often misused. It should be taken an extremely small quantities, but the standard American attitude is "if a little is good more is better"🙄 so most people are taking way too much.
On the other hand, Vitamin D is largely safe, and all the hype and anxiety about "toxic levels" is largely based on one anecdote that almost no one is even aware of any more. In this situation an attorney took powdered vitamin D from a source who had mislabeled the product, and it turned out he was massively overdosing. Fortunately his doctor was familiar with vitamin D and was able to test his product.
Melatonin can also have some very unpleasant side effects for people, such as violent or vivid dreams. This is more common than many people realize.

I used to think like this too, but I've completly changed my mind on vit d after looking at all the research on how it effects the health (pretty much destroys it - supplement not sun derived, just to be clear)... I've also started to 180 on melatonin also, there's no negative feed back loop (indicating this is not something the body wants breaks on) and the concept of inhibiting sex hormones and causing testicular shrinkage is a litural hamster (garbage) study... The body actually produces huge amounts of melatonin (4x pineal releas just in GI track) from every mitochondria in the body, when! Exposed to correct light. This is what creats the spf effect and the cell healing. Anyway I'm not saying to believe me or change your mind, just don't get boxed into the social media dealings that usually only give 1/4 of the story.

That is not a very popular view on vitamin D but after much research...I've come to that conclusion, too. And like you, I am also happily taking a high dose melatonin and seeing good results.

I agree with you 💯 More is not better. After several tries I can only use 1mg melatonin for sleep. Works well. Higher doses actually give me insomnia. 2mg gives me restless sleep. 4mg kept me up all night.
