Why MacBooks Don't Have Face ID

  • Apple replaced Touch ID on iPhones with Face ID back in 2017. But MacBooks never received the feature. Which is surprising, since their notch is even bigger than an iPhone’s. So why hasn’t Apple used that space to include Face ID?

The faceID module in iPhones is not 7.8mm thick (most of that thickness is camera / battery / board). The dot projector is like 3-4mm, and a camera is just a camera. The existing FaceID dot matrix on an iPhone 12, which is cubish-shaped, could probably be spread out a bit. Lasers are notoriously tricky tho.

I respectfully disagree. If we look at the Windows side, the facial recognition with Windows Hello is fantastic. By the time I've opened the lid fully, it's already logged me in. It works in bright light and in the pitch darkness since it uses infrared.
The Dell XPS 15/ 17 has an even smaller bezel than an MBP and no thicker of a lid, but still manages to fit the full infrared camera system. I know Apple can do better, they just don't want to apparently.

The crucial factor overlooked regarding the impracticality of Face ID on MacBooks is the inconsistent alignment of your face with the screen. This issue arises when individuals place their laptops on stands alongside their primary screens, requiring head-turning towards the MacBook. External screen users sometimes also closes the MacBook lid. Also, situations where one is standing up next to the laptop placed on a table result in the screen not being at eye level upon waking the computer.

Great video! I think it is very creditable that you always try to present many different viewpoints of a topic.
Surely the thin lid of a MacBook poses a technical challenge accommodating Face ID. But as said in the video, I also truly believe that Touch ID fits the MacBook or rather its usecase much better. Confirming important actions will always require a physical verification - that being the press of a button. A attention check (open eyes) is not enough. Therefore TouchID works just fine, since you will press the key anyway. In fact it is even better when taking into consideration that the viewing angle to your MacBook will vary more than to your iPhone - it sounds paradoxical but actually is that way. Also, I am using my MacBook in clamshell mode. And boy am I happy about a separate keyboard with TouchID on it. While it certainly is possible that Apple is working on integrating FaceID in a MacBook, I think that they like to use the notch more for brand recognition. Features like unlocking with nearby devices (Apple Watch) and TouchID are more convient on a MacBook. From a technical point of view I could see a dualism coming, where Apple implements both alongside each other. Although the reasoning and marketing would be a bit strange to sell... by the way windows hello is a camera based setup and there fore far less secure. Time will tell what happens next... surely the Apple Vision Pro with OpticID will bring a lot of know-how to the topic. Apple will bring it to the MacBook when they feel it is worth it (and cheap and good enough).

FaceID is definitely easier because it requires absolutely no action on the user's part to authenticate. It's completely seamless. There are rumours that there's a patent for implementing FaceID on a Mac, so we'll see how that goes. But imo, we either have FaceID, or no notch. Either way, the notch must go.

There's a lot of comments here adding software points on top of the physical limitations that prevent the implementation of Face ID, which are simply not true. Yes, you can't cram present-day Face ID hardware into either MacBook Air or Pro's monitor due to the shallow depth, but Microsoft has had Windows Hello - their camera-based facial recognition setup - figured out for nearly a decade at this point on a lot of their Surface hardware. My partner's 2015 Surface Book recognizes them and them alone each time they open the screen or lock the screen, walk away, and come back to make eye contact. Apple's Face ID would be a lot more secure than Microsoft's camera-based setup, so if given the physical ability to install it, I guarantee they already know how to implement the execution.

@@anthonyarcenas576 Actually windows hello uses the same depth sensors in laptops to achieve its facial recognition. If your laptop doesn't have an IR sensor in addition to its camera, you will not be able to use windows hello facial recognition. Although apple calls their IR camera a "true-depth" sensor which is purely a marketing term.

@@anthonyarcenas576 no, windows hello does not utilize the camera, it uses the 3d infared sensor to make 3d model of your face, you can cover up the camera or use it in pitch black and it will work perfectly each time.

One technical problem with implementing Face ID in the Mac is that there's not necessarily a clear signal to trigger it. For an iPhone, it's easy, as it can detect you picking up your phone, and then activate Face ID. Sure, if your MacBook has a closed lid, and you open it, that bit is fine

I just realized it actually makes sense that there’s no Face ID on the MacBook. Just remember the times when you install software or stuff runs that requires admin confirmation. When you get the Touch ID prompt, you actually have the chance to deny the action. Well, with Face ID, it would skip the confirmation box before you even have the chance to read it and auto confirm every action, even the unwanted ones. So Touch ID is safer and makes more sense on the MacBooks.

I guess that the main problem is: for a iPhone when you lift you phone, it's a trigger to FaceID starts to recognize, or when you touch the screen. But on a Mac, you don't have this kind of interaction, so you've to press a key to trigger to FaceID, so it would be redundant since if you need to press a key to unlock, why not just press the Touch ID key?
